With the ever-growing demand for Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod productions it is our profound pleasure to present his latest masterpiece - Whatcha Doing (To Me) b/w Strike Three. Originally a stand-out album track from Charles Bradley's "Changes" long player - then titled "You Think I Don't Know (But I Know)" - Axelrod and Co. artfully transform the Soul groover into an early reggae stroller, ala 1970 Bunny Lee. Charles' signature plaintive vocals provide a beautiful juxtaposition to the lighthearted bounce of the Inversion's Island beat. On the flip you'll find the Dub version titled Strike Three, that's sure to make our beloved DJ demographic select the number 2 in the ol' order box. Thankfully CB was able to hear this version before he passed, to which he said "Ooooooo! I Love It!" We think you will too!

After repeatedly being visited by a strange messenger in his dreams while on tour in the islands of Greece, Toby Pazner became consumed with a vision to tell the stories of The Olympians through music. Chosen by the gods as a messenger for not only his musical gifts, but for his unique position at the center of the Daptone family, Toby built a home studio from scratch and employed some of the top soul musicians in the world to help him breath life into this album. The result is a dramatic and cinematic journey to the outer limits of instrumental soul music, built on a foundation laid by the same craftsmen who’s bricks built the legacies of Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, The Budos Band, and Menahan Street Band, and painted with lush strings, harpsichord, harp and horns. The Olympians is destined to be the instr umental gem of the year.Black Vinyl

Since the LP release of James Hunter's jaw-dropping 'Minute By Minute' we've been flooded with requests from DJ's across the nation for a 45 rpm pairing. It takes a special kind of record to warrant a 45 two years after street date but this, ladies and gentlemen, is a long player of such quality. Due to the suffocating frequency of passionate emails, inquiries and suggestions, we had to outsource the gargantuan, albeit monotonous, task of compiling these queries into an easy-to-read pie chart. The results were staggeringly close so after some counsel via our local watering hole, we picked what is surely a two-sider of unparalleled character. It is our distinct privilege to present to you: Heartbreak b/w If I Only Knew, by The James Hunter Six. If you don't like this, you don't have good taste in music. LOOK OUT for James and Co.'s new album early next year on DAPTONE RECORDS!

When Dunham Records/Daptone producer and musician Thomas Brenneck first heard the close family harmonies of the Sha La Das he had a revelation, he knew he had to get it on tape. Direct from Staten Island, the four Schaldas, father Bill and sons Will aka Swivs, who also toured the world playing keyboard for Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, Paul of Paul and the Tall Trees and Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, and Carmine had come into the studio in Brooklyn to record background vocals on Charles Bradley’s Victim of Love. It was a passion that drove Brenneck from the very beginning.“Hearing them sing together in the studio was incredible”, says Brenneck. He collaborated with Bill Schalda writing songs and applying harmonic sensibilities rooted in doo wop, blues and soul. It wasn’t a stretch for Bill, after all he’d been second tenor when still a teen in Brooklyn vocal group, The Montereys in the 1960s (their 45, Face In The Crowd/Step Right Up on Blast records sells for $500 these days) who would play venues from neighborhood bars to the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens.“Bill is the genuine article, just like Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, he came directly from the source,” says Brenneck. Indeed, Bill Schalda was right there amongst doo wop and r&b groups of the era, singing Moonglows and Flamingos tunes.“You’d go out on the street and constantly hear a bunch of guys singing on the corner, they’d finish playing handball in the schoolyard during the day and then they’d start singing at night,” says Bill. “We were all just guys in the neighborhood in Brooklyn, who gradually found each other.”After their children were born, Bill and wife Linda moved the family across the Verrazano-Narrows bridge to Staten Island. Growing up, sons Will, Paul and Carmine remember summer nights singing group harmonies on the stoop of their home with their father Bill guiding them. “He would bring us out on the stoop on Staten Island and he would teach us each parts of say, the sesame street song – we were his backing group very early on – that was fun,” says eldest son, Will.On this, their debut, the talent is harnessed in 11 songs, each tender-voiced delight delivered with absolute conviction combined with musicians that have help define the Daptone/Dunham Records sound including Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, Dave Guy, Leon Michels, Nick Movshon and Victor Axelrod. “I wanted to take the Sha La Das outside of the doo wop genre,” says Brenneck. “To take the whole vocabulary of doo wop harmony and reapply it to soul - so you get super soulful harmonies along the lines of The Manhattans & The Moments.”From the opening atmospheric guitar strum of Open My Eyes via a walk along the Coney Island boardwalk catching the last glimpse of sunlight at dusk of Carnival to the sublime crescendo of harmonies of the winsome Love in the Wind, each song evokes a deeply personal yet universal yearning that none of us can escape. Quite simply every song yields magic. There’s something special when a family can meld voices in close harmony. The Everly Brothers had it, The Beach Boys had it, the Schalda's have it.

A permanent fixture in the world of Rhythm and Soul, James Hunter follows up five critically acclaimed albums with his latest recording, Whatever It Takes, for New York City’s renowned label, Daptone Records. At the height of his famed recording career, Hunter and Daptone co-founder and producer Bosco Mann recorded an elegantly crafted collection of 10 originals that are evermore poignant and compelling than the singer’s previous works. The James Hunter Six and Mann recorded Whatever It Takes straight to tape at Daptone's Penrose Studios in Riverside, California. The first Brit to sign to Daptone Records, Hunter is revered by critics both in his native UK and stateside, with MOJO touting Hunter as “The UK’s greatest soul singer” and the Los Angeles Times praising his “extraordinary soul voice.” Of his prior recordings, Rolling Stone called his U.S. debut People Gonna Talk, “a treat not to miss” and his second album “unbelievably awesome,” while The New York Times noted of The Hard Way, Hunter’s “tight, slithery groove” and “sweet growl.” Hunter’s accolades include milestones of reaching #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, a GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best Traditional Blues Album”, years as a singer touring and recording with Van Morrison, and many TV appearances on Conan, Later…with Jools Holland, and other late night TV shows. Subsequent to his acclaim as one of today’s renowned soul singers, Hunter’s restless genius penning emotive and captivating works results in his best written compositions to date on Whatever It Takes.

Direct from Havana, Cuba - Daptone Records is proud to present the debut single by Orquesta Akokán. Featuring some of Havana's most formidable musicians playing with a groove, a tumbao, that hasn't been heard for decades, Orquesta Akokán is a classic Mambo-inspired force of nature. “Mambo Rapidito”, a lively up-tempo one-chord vamp in the vein of Prado or Moré, boasts an undeniable energy - ripe for a freshly polished dancefloor! On the flip, "Un Tabaco para Elegua", describes a tambor (an afro-cuban religious ceremony) over a slow, bubbling groove - a perfect compliment to sipping distilled sugar cane. The two massive sides offered up were recorded at the pre-revolutionary 1940s era Areito studios in Centro Havana where the spirit of Aragón, Tata Güines and Elena Burke still reverberate through the walls.

Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning “from the heart,” and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album (March 30/Daptone Records) by Orquesta Akokán feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. Assembled and led by Cuban vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, Orquesta Akokán is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. It features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at Havana’s hallowed state-run Estudios Areito. Areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important Cuban records have been made. The album was produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth. ‘Orquesta Akokán’ flexes its blazing hot mambo from the first downbeat, with lead-off track “Mambo Rapidito”: a breakneck pace, deft big band orchestrations that dart and weave, rich cascades of piano, all led by Pepito’s soaring, joyful proclamations.José “Pepito” Gómez sang for legendary groups in Cuba before moving to the NYC area in 2008, where he’s continued to perform over the past decade. Intersecting pathways in the music scene led Pepito to Jacob Plasse and Mike Eckroth. Plasse founded Chulo Records (he produced and released the Latin GRAMMY-winning Flor de Toloache album) and met Pepito through his band Los Hacheros. Mike Eckroth is an accomplished pianist, composer and arranger with a deep knowledge of Cuban music. Together they yearned to rediscover the sounds that Pepito knew from his childhood.Pepito assembled the band, with help from Cuban musicians he worked with long ago. It boasts an all-star cast, including pianist César “Pupy” Pedroso from Los Van Van, a saxophone section featuring members of Irakere, and a percussion section featuring members of NG La Banda. Then Pepito, Jacob and Mike flew to Havana for the session that began Nov 7, 2016 (straddling the U.S. election). The Areito sessions were electrifying, a magic energy not only from the historic room, but the musicians all gathered together. ‘Orquesta Akokán’ celebrates the Cuban kingpins of mambo: Pérez Prado, Arsenio Rodríguez, and Cachao. In fusing their distinct styles, the album evokes a sound straight from 1950s Cuba, and shot through with Daptone's distinct sense of soul, attention to sonic detail and songcraft. This is a fascinating next step for Daptone, which released the final album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and mourned the loss of Charles Bradley in 2017. ‘Orquesta Akokán’ finds the label branching outside its own studios to release its first Spanish language album.

She died nearly a year ago, but only now can we hear her final creation. Soul of a Woman captures a singer and a band at the peak of their power. Cutting one last time to eight-track tape at Daptone’s House of Soul studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the band endeavored to create a record that stretches the limits of their soulful sound in all directions, giving us both their rawest and most sophisticated recordings to date. A final statement by one of the most influential rhythm and blues voices of the 21st century.

Antibalas’ new studio album, Where The Gods Are In Peace, is an epic Afro-Western Trilogy searching for solace from American political opportunism, greed and vengeance. Through its battle cry of resistance against exploitation and displacement, ANTIBALAS’ long-form compositions investigate oppression in 1800s America that eerily mirror the current state of the country. Three explosive original arrangements cultivate an urgent call to heal a broken system. Ultimately, the sonic excursion lands on an island where love is our first instinct. A new ideology is born opening our hearts to the possibilities of living as one unified people, where all gods are equal and together we prevail.True to traditional form, Where The Gods Are In Peace pays respect to the forefathers of Afrobeat with compositions spanning nine to 15 minutes in length. With a blessing from the Fela Kuti legacy early in the band’s career, ANTIBALAS has long been revered for re-popularizing the classic Afrobeat sound while adding their distinct New York City grit to the mix. Influences of punk rock, free jazz, and hip-hop seep into their expansive works to define a truly 21st century translation of the Afrobeat genre and beyond.

Billboard charts, Grammy nominations, and Van Morrison collaborations aside, he has earned an international reputation as a Rhythm and Blues troubadour for his command of the microphone both on stage and in studio. This album, however, is something far deeper than just another notch in his belt. It is truly an ar tist’s vision come to fruition.

Rev. Gean West had been leading Gospel groups for almost 20 years when he formed The Relatives in 1970. While dedicated to spreading The Word, the new band would have what West called a "street sound" as a response to the increasingly funky music of black America. Two younger members of The Relatives, Rev. West's brother, Tommie, and guitarist Charles Ray Mitchell, we're very much under the influence of Eddie Hazel and Funkadelic when they cut the unparalleled Psychedelic Gospel burner, "Don't Let Me Fall." "Don't let me fall, I've been as far as I can go,"explains Rev. West of the the song's plea. Self-released as a tiny batch of 45's in the early 1970's -- and nearly impossible to find today -- this is the first time "Don't Let Me Fall" has been reissued on 7-inch.In 1975, The Relatives went into the studio of legendar y Texas engineer Phil York with a reinvigorated line-up and a new set of songs. From this inspired recording session came "Leave Something Worthwhile." Featuring a powerful group vocal soaring over Earnest Tarkington's funky drums and Zebbie Thomas' guitar licks, it's hard to believe this track sat unreleased for over 30 years. After years of requests that "Wor thwhile" be pressed as a 45, Ever-Soul is proud to release it here for the first time on 7-inch.

Dark, triumphant and mysterious, the new Menahan Street band 45 single "Light's Out" conjures images of hard-fighting pugilists battling it out under a bare bulb, of a matador's graceful execution of a lumbering bull, of sweat, romance and victory. Brought in by a rollicking, almost tipsy, Hammond melody and backed by a smoky smooth guitar line, “Keep Coming Back” eventually erupts into a swanky nightlife anthem, complete with red velvet curtains and a garnished highball. Both songs are featured on their upcoming full-length titled, The Crossing.

Ten years ago we were excited to release an archival collection of the sweetest soul from upstate New York in the 1960s, BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE.... The beautifully packaged LP sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul.So to respond to the demand of soul fans worldwide we’re releasing a remastered pressing of IF THIS WORLD WAS MINE... for all of those who missed out on this sensational album the first time around, this time with TWO bonus cuts.In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, NY label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do play back with unconventional humanity and anomalous presence.William’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realised in his lifetime, but in February 2007 we jumped at the chance to pull together these sweet and soulful recordings into an album that’s remained a Daptone favorite ever since.A decade later and we’re thrilled that it’s back in the racks at your favorite purveyor of soulful platters.Remastered with two new songs not previously available on the original version, “I Really Love You” and “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know).”

With their first two Daptone albums – Get an Understanding, and as featured singers on Como Now – The Como Mamas established themselves as three of the strongest voices in gospel music today. In December of 2015, they cemented that reputation by taking their first trip from their home in Como, MS up to Harlem, NY to crush the Apollo Theater as part of the Daptone Super Soul Revue. Taking full advantage of their presence in town, the Daptone crew brought Ester Mae Wilbourn, Della Daniels, and Angelia Taylor into the House of Soul the week after the show to join forces for the first time with the musicians and studio that has defined their label’s sound. Jimmy Hill, Thomas Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, and Bosco Mann, all stalwarts of the Daptone stable, came together as “The Glorifiers Band,” to put down a churning musical foundation for these amazing singers. The results are some of the heaviest tracks that Daptone has cut to date. If you don’t like raw, soulful gospel music, you’re really gonna hate this one. Move Upstairs is a real mother!

Though the postmodern lyrical tilt of this soulful romp into yuletide carols by Daptone heavyweights won't be lost on our more discerning listener, the sincerity of the band's delivery is unquestionably without irony. Somehow Jones is able to acknowledge the clichéd din of shopping mall chrismas Muzac, and at the same time transcend it to tug gently upon that lone innocent heartstring which still clings to the magic of St. Nick's Snowy Festivities. Perhaps it is "just another christmas song," but with a groove like this it's hard to say we don't need it.On the flip, Saundra Williams (of rising Saun & Starr fame) has penned a playful little diddy. She shoulders up with her old friends Sharon and Starr to knock it out Andrews Sister style in an impromptu holiday session at the House of Soul. It's a great holiday record for the whole family! (Saundra has sworm up and down repeatedly that any entendre in Big Bulbs was completely unintended.)

Ever wonder what it would have sounded like if Black Sabbath took holiday in Ethiopia ... and jammed with magicians? FEAR NOT! The time is right for the darker corners of the Daptone Universe to bring for th a waxen treasure of said for titude and doom. We called upon the Budos Band, whose history, etched in forgotten stone slabs buried far beneath the bedrock which Staten Island reigns upon, answered with a fuzz-induced rite! BEHOLD! After four years, the Budos have come down from the mountain and something is not quite the same. The music echoes a call that is both ancient and familiar, pulling the listener into a wilderness of stinging distor tion, melody and unbridled dissonance, forming a sound that has harnessed a primal energy, cloaked in a shroud of shimmering psychedelia. Daptone Records humbly presents: Burnt Offering b/w Seizure. Dig it, or become the offering!

Led by Ester Mae Smith’ s unmistakeable voice, the Como Mama’ s have found their place at the gospel end of the Daptone table alongside a legend ar y stable of soulful musicians. However , as stirring as their music is, up to now , all of their recordings have been a capella. With this record they join for ces with the boys of the Menahan Street Band (billed pseudonymously here as The Radi ant Rhythm Band) to lay bare the funkier side of gospel music. “The rhyth ms we all play were already right there in their vocals,” explains dr ummer Homer Steinweiss, “so it felt natural to lay down the grooves behind them.” Thomas “T-N-T” Brenneck, the up-and-coming producer who brought us both Menahan Street Band and Charles Bradley, presided over the collaboration, which took place in the old Dunham Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Christmas? Soul? Christmas Soul! Here you go, kids: Sharon Jones' debut holiday song! In this self-penned little jingle-jangler, Sharon takes us back to her childhood, where as a young girl in the projects of Brooklyn she wondered how Santa was ever going to bring her any toys when clearly, “There Ain't No Chimneys in the Projects.” As she soon finds out, the true miracle of Christmas was no fat man shimmying down heating ducts, but rather the love with which her own mother had been secretly tucking those presents under that tree. Awww. With a little help from Sharon's backup singers and some tasty violin runs offered up by the Bushwick Philharmonic, the Dap-Kings lock into their usual nasty little pocket and the groove blossoms like a soulful red pointsettia beneath Sharon's story. The flip gives Daptone mouth-man Binky Griptite an instrumental taste overwhich he lays down a heartfelt holiday message of tolerance and togetherness. Right on, Santa!

Before Daptone, there was Desco. Before Desco, there were The Poets of Rhythm.Back in the ‘90s, a time when most of our ears were filled with the alternating din of angsty grunge and synthesizedpseudo-soul, a couple of German kids unearthed a raw sound from our own backyard that we hadn’t evenremembered bur ying. Though for a time they reveled in the borrowed nostalgia of bell-bottoms and fur coats, their style was always in spite of fashion, not because of it. They drew from the sound of old funk records, notas a mold, but as inspiration, understanding that sound would always be an origin of their music, but unlike many‘soul revivalists’ to follow, they never settled for it as a destination. As homage to the undeniably funky frontrunners of the modern soul movement, we are proud to present thedefinitive collection of Poets tunes, respectfully curated by Daptone staff and the band themselves. It’s beentwenty years since their first recording session, and this anthology celebrates their decade-long journey from theraw exuberant rebellion of ‘Funky Train’, to the moody hypnotic explorations of Discern/Define, and for the firsttime EVER on wax, the eerie, relaxed groover ‘Path of Life’ – A journey that tr uly earns them their name: The Poetsof Rhythm.

Starting off on his 62nd birthday, Charles Bradley: Soul of America follows the extraordinary journey of singer Charles Bradley during the electrifying and transformative months leading up to the release of his debut album "No Time for Dreaming." The 74-minute documentary feature premiered at South By Southwest in Austin and went on to play top film festivals around the world including Hot Docs, Best of Hot Docs (Vancouver), Silverdocs, Munich International Film Festival, Montreal International Documentary Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Milwaukee Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival and Bonnaroo. The film won a Special Jury Award at Chicago International Music and Movies Festival and continues its festival run at IDFA, CPH:DOX, Leeds and Vienna this fall. Despite being abandoned as a child, a period of homelessness, the devastating loss of his brother and constant poverty, Charles never gave up on his life long dream to be a professional singer. With the help of producer and Grammy-winner Gabriel Roth (Daptone Records) and musician and label owner Tommy Brenneck (Dunham Records), Charles moved away from the James Brown covers he'd been performing for nearly half a century and focused on finding his own unique voice.Earning himself an opening spot on tour for Sharon Jones, the biggest artist in the Daptone stable, Charles delivered the most impassioned performances of his life. Coming up during one of the worst economic downturns in history, Charles' heartfelt songs about tragedy, the downfall of the American dream, and hope for a better world resonated with audiences and the impossible dream he chased for 48 years started to become a reality. But, while experiencing his first taste of success, Charles couldn't escape the adversity that had followed him since birth. When the oppressive mortgage on his 87-year-old mother's house threatened to cost him everything, Charles hit a new low.And then, following his sold out album release show, Charles' life changed completely. Championed by critics and fans alike, "No Time For Dreaming" became one of the most incredible success stories of the year, landing on Rolling Stone magazine's top 50 albums of 2011 and catapulting Charles to over 110 performances in 17 countries on 3 continents over the next year alone. In addition, Bradley picked up coveted gigs at top festivals like ACL and Bonnaroo and lit up television via spots on Jay Leno and Carson Daly. while his music video scored over 2 million hits online and played in rotation on VH1. Following this unprecedented success, Charles' star has continued to rise. He tours the world year-round to growing crowds, pouring his soul out at each show as if it's his last and stepping off stage to give out teary-eyed hugs and acknowledge the miracle of the journey that Spin calls "...utterly amazing."

In 2005, Michael Reilly embarked on a journey down south with the intention to film a documentar y about local musicians. Through a series of unexpected yet fortunate events Reilly was led to Como Mississippi, and ultimately to the table of Angela Taylor – where she, her sister Della Daniels, and long time friend Ester Mae Smith performed an a cappella rendition of “Peace of Mind”. It was this moment that inspired Michael to return to Como with proper recording equipment, and much like what Alan Lomax had done decades before, document some of the most honest, soulful music to ever be tracked to tape. The first volume of recordings, 2008’s ComoNow featured the Como Mamas, as well as several other local groups delivering heart stopping a cappella renditions of songs they cherished. And though the Como Mama’s remained skeptical that anyone would want to hear them singing an entire record of acappella gospel, we at Daptone Records are proud to present Get an Understanding, 13 songs of unadulterated gospel greatness.

Shortly before the demise of Daptone's predecessor, Desco Records, at the close of the twentieth century, a 10" test pressing was cut from a session with Gospel-Soul belter Naomi Shelton (then appearing under her married name, Naomi Davis). It featured Cliff Driver on organ backed by the rhythm section of Daptone's house band, The Soul Providers, and was considered by many in the family to contain the two heaviest sides they'd ever cut. Though a handful of these tests survive, traded or auctioned off by Desco insiders and tucked into the boxes of a few lucky collectors, the label's doors had shut before the pressing orders could be sent to the plant and the record never dropped. Now, ten years later, on the heels of Naomi's first full length LP, 'what Have You Done, My Brother?', Wind Your Clock, the coveted lost ark of every Desco fanatic, has been pressed to 7" and is slated to be issued to the public for the first time. Both sides are packed HEAVY with soul and promise to fill every nook and cranny of the whole they left in our hearts and record boxes when they disappeared and were left for lost a decade ago.
