Paradygm Shift

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Paradygm Shift, the first Robert Hood album to be released since 2012. A staggering record of techno dynamite sees the Detroit legend excelling at what he does best. The record serves as a milestone for the Dutch label Dekmantel, celebrating its tenth anniversary, with the label’s 50th release..Paradygm Shift is return to the distinguished style that defined Robert Hood’s music in the early 90s. It is the older, and more mature brother to Hood’s classic Minimal Nation, highlighting his more evolved, technical craftsmanship, It is an album of crisp, smooth and delicately orchestrated techno that is quintessentially minimal in focus, and grandiose in sound, juxtaposed with electronic funk, wrapped up in blisteringly urgent, and honest, pulsating techno. The LP is the culmination of a three EP series released on Dekmantel. “The idea behind it is just a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings. I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset." Robert says about the record’s concept. "I felt it necessary to reiterate Robert Hood as an electronic music artist who is bringing minimalism back in the forefront, and not to get lost in the melody. I want to get back to the simple repetitive programming that I'm known for, and to me it was returning to that, and shifting the listeners' focus.”Like his DJ sets, Paradygm Shift gradually warms up into a rolling hypnotic, succession of pious rhythms that make up ‘Idea’. The orthodox template never brakes, but evolves as the album proceeds. It is beholden of a man born of playful discipline. ‘Solid Thought’ points to a heightened sense of purity, ‘Magnet’ is unabashed and unflinching in its ruthlessness, while ‘Pneuma’ is the record’s only soulful link to Hood’s recent Floorplan past. As the record draws to a close, penultimate track ‘Pattern 8’ plays out as a beautifully synthesized, hymn that points towards to an earlier period of machine-driven, soul music.Paradygm Shift is the perfect marriage, cementing the Detroit-Dutch relationship further. Although this will be Robert Hood’s first LP release with Dekmantel, the marraige between the two stretches back over seven years. Since DJing at Paradiso for the Dekmantel crew back in 2010, Robert Hood has been a regular fixture for the clubnights and festivals ever since, while also contributing remixes to Juju & Jordash’s Deep Blue Meanies EP. “I could tell these guys were hungry for electronic music. Dekmantel is about making things happen, and so like minds think alike,” Hood says about their history,Speaking about the record project and signing, the team behind Dekmantel stated: "Just like a lot of Robert Hood fans, we’re most enthusiastic about his older, minimal material. After all, it’s what made him famous in the first place and was an important ingredient in the early Dekmantel days. His Paradygm Shift music appeals to this period but has a modern feel too it, which makes it very exciting.”

Matrixxman has been a Dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. The San Francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for Dekmantel Records. Over the course of three EP’s (Rhythm, Acid, Polyphony), Charles McCloud Duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. The concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation. This second EP "Sector II: Acid" shows an exercise in acid. Similarly, the TB-303 may conjure certain knee-jerk reactions at a glance, but acid has the potential to cover a broader palette of emotion than one might initially expect. Sector II holds three squirming 303 sequences and the classic rhythmic drum programming of ‘Arrival’, ‘Bad Acid’ and ‘I Am Matrix’. ‘Rites’ on the other hand is more subtle and fluent, swinging with hazy acid flourishes and dynamic syncopation.

Slick 3 tracker from Bas Bron under his popular Fatima Yamaha alias. The synths sing on this one! Another beautifully produced 12" from the Dutch veteran. TIP!.Dutch producer Bas Bron aka Fatima Yamaha has been hammering out quality releases under numerous aliases for more than a decade now. Nevertheless it wasn’t until the 2015 re-Vissuing of his fourteen-year-old track ‘What’s A Girl To Do’ on Dekmantel Records, that his gush into the underground forefront has now exhilarated his unique talent. Fatima Yamaha starts of the 2017 year of Dekmantel Records with his second EP for the Amsterdam label and ‘Araya’ promises to be a worthy successor of his 2015 success. The title track ‘Araya’ is the absolute eye catcher of this EP. Already tested in Fatima Yamaha’s highly anticipated live-sets in the last months, with great response, ‘Araya’ is a dramatic curtain raiser that only he can make. Next to that, Bron effectively spills his keen ear for melody on the A-side with his typical electro-funk with ‘Piayes Beach Bar And Grill’. On the flip crystalline synth drops, a classic piano and skipping drums are the main ingredients for ‘Romantic Bureaucracy’.

Makam returns to Dekmantel Records with his first full-length album for the Amsterdam based label. Guy Blanken’s ongoing search for fresh sounds, textures and rhythms has lead him to “Than Sadet”, a gorgeous piece of work that takes his sound into new directions. “Than Sadet” displays a refinement of Makam’s sound. The music is highly tactile, with an emphasis on the surroundings of the environment in which it was created. Blanken: ‘‘Than Sadet is a secluded beach on an island in Thailand. A mysterious atmosphere haunts it. It’s windy and the weather is always a bit worse compared to the rest of the isle. There are many cliffs and you can’t swim because the waves are too high. Four years ago I visited Than Sadet for the first time and I’ve been coming back ever since. At one point I decided to bring my studio equipment. For a week, I dedicated my days to making music. Those sketches formed the basis of the album.’’ The inspiration on Than Sadet is obvious. From billowing percussion thru windswept strings to passages of strange bird calls, and across desolate tracts of calving synthesizers to a climax with a finale of petrifying thunder drums. The levels of dramatic suspense are ski-high, and mostly downbeat and mid-tempo grooves operate beyond the dancefloor.

The fourth release in Dekmantel Record's tenth-anniversary, celebratory release series is a collection of new material from some of the label's favourite artists. A blend of the old and new, brought together through a shared love of electro, and wave influenced grooves by the likes of Palms Trax, The Egyptian lover, Interstellar Funk, and Syracuse & Epsilove. .On the EP, The Egyptian Lover tees things off with his trademark electro vibes. Making his Dekmantel inauguration, the electro pioneer sets the precedent with his 808, retro-futurist aesthetic. It's classes Egypt through and through. No stranger to Dekmantel however, UK producer Palms Trax adds a hallmark slab of classic-analogue, summertime house, a track that will inevitably find its way into his festival set later this summer. French synth-pop act Syracuse & Epsilove -whose 2015 Antinote LP Liquid Silver Dream is essential listening for those who haven't heard it- contribute a dreamlike, electro vocal pop number to the record. Also marking their debut to the label. Amsterdam based Interstellar Funk, the Red Light Radio and Rush Hour analogue adventurist, delivers a track full of playful, yet murky synthetic grooves, with a machine-heart and lively, fanciful melody. 2017 sees Dekmantel celebrating its 10th anniversary. A decade ago, the Amsterdam crew threw their first party in the Dutch capital; two years later Dekmantel Records followed. And for their decennial anniversary, Dekmantel Records are releasing ten, very special EPs over the course of 2017. For this series, Dekmantel invited producers who are close to their hearts, have been with them since day one, or made a big musical impact on the crew. Artists including the likes of Gigi Masin, Levon Vincent, and Call Super, who all graced the first three EPs released earlier this year. Along with seasoned names, the series will see the indoctrination of newcomers to the label including Burnt Friedman, Ectomorph, and Donato Dozzy. It will also feature the addition of a couple of stone cold geniuses, including Motor City Drum Ensemble, Ricardo Villalobos, Joy Orbison, and Tony Allen.

Following celebrated compilations from Motor City Drum Ensemble and Young Marco – and with the second edition of its limited-capacity festival in Croatia right around the corner – Dekmantel’s Selectors series now continues with an edition curated by Marcel Dettmann.Although he’s now known as one of the world’s most celebrated techno artists, even Marcel Dettmann had to start somewhere. Long before he ever held court at Berghain (or its predecessor, Ostgut), he was just another young boy in Eastern Germany, one whose earliest encounters with capitalism involved spending every penny he could scrape together down at the local record shop. In those days, it wasn’t techno that got him excited, but new wave, post-punk, industrial and EBM acts like Front 242 and Depeche Mode“It’s music from my childhood,” says Dettmann. “It’s still relevant and still inspires me.” That inspiration can be heard across this edition of the Selectors series, as Dettmann has put together what he describes as a “pre-techno compilation.” Much like the previous Selectors editions, the compilation is not a mix CD, but a collection of tracks hand picked by Dettmann from his own vinyl archives. Freshly remastered – and occasionally reworked or re-edited by Dettmann himself – the songs here are undoubtedly vintage gems, but they also represent a very personal journey into Dettmann’s past.“It was a great opportunity to dig deeper into my own musical outlook,” he explains. “The tracks come from a time before Marcel Dettmann became a DJ.” Simply put, the songs here are some of the building blocks upon which he’s built an incredibly storied career, and now he’d like to entrust them to future generations.

Their relentless work ethos makes you wonder if these guys sleep at all. Maybe that’s what Tuesdays are for? DKMNTL 043 is a three-tracker and a fine display of Gal Aner’s and Jordan Czamanski’s next-level, improv based way of painting records. “Monday Mellow” is a dubbed out, twisted and subtly emerging house groover, while “Wednesday Something” continues the journey with a dense electronic jazz-tinged stomper. “Thursday, Heavy” demonstrates their full range, combining eerie melodic synth excursions with a jagged bassline – an out of this world, destructive yet classy house bomb. As always their intergalactic excursions are superbly executed. Let’s give them some rest on those Tuesdays.

Berlin based Adam Marshall and Christian Andersen collaborate as Graze. In the latest installment of the UFO series, the Dekmantel Records offshoot dedicated to experimental and futuristic electronic music, the Canadian veteran producers serve up a 50/50 lethal/dreamy drum trax package. Many have applauded the versatility of Graze, and their “Xup EP” is yet more proof of their original minds. “Xup” is an abstract 4/4 jugular, beating out devious percussive patterns and rattling hi-hats over a grizzled and arpeggiated synth mortar-fire. “Vast” on the other hand is an esoteric slow-burner, a hallucinatory trip to the depths of analog synth paradise and a perfect intro, outro or home listening gem. On the flip, the hyper-lean gearshift of “Tryptch” pumps energy through off-kilter and plunderphonic basslines, while “Shadow Play” is a classic piece of breakbeat bliss including a celestial synth arrangement that makes a perfect soundtrack for slow-speed sci-fi rides.

Vakula has been a Dekmantel label member ever since the very early days. The Ukraine based producer now drops his album “Cyclicality Between Procyon And Gomeisa” on the label. “This album is about cycles, repetition and interaction”, says Vakula, whose “Cyclicality between Procyon and Gomeisa” is the third of a series of albums and reflects a dashing experimental record that evokes the endless and captivating potential of electronic music. It creates a mesmerizing journey through various music genres, exhibiting a singular sonic experience, whilst he works through a process of improvisation and refinement. Once again the mastermind proves to be capable of creating complex, yet diverse musical pieces beyond genres and trends. The result: an audio adaptation of his fascinating mind. “There are two parallel processes that come together in my work: me writing music and working on the sound I want to achieve, and the energy from outside that flows and transforms into thoughts, correlations, and actions.” The track titles relate to the source of Vakula’s inspiration and connect the dots between his obsession for the vastness of our universe and electronic music. ‘‘To wonder about the universe and to dig into mythology and scientific research discovering at least some of its secrets is what keeps me endlessly motivated as a producer.’’ That’s his approach to music and exactly what he does on “Cyclicality Between Procyon And Gomeisa”.

Amsterdam’s cult producer and DJ Steven van Hulle a.k.a. Awanto 3 likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly and his synths sweaty as a Detroit summer breeze. The MPC wizard returns to Dekmantel delivering his second, full-length album. Gargamel is arguably his most compelling piece of work. Spread over the course of nine tracks, van Hulle shows he’s capable of serving up many different styles and genres in his ever-expanding arsenal..The Rednose Distrikt affiliate kicks things off with his friend and co-producer Darling. 'Azrael' builds over shuffling, infectious rhythms, a cluster of vocal stabs and heartfelt keys. 'This Is When We Met', 'Why Don’t You' and 'Gargamelancholia' on the other hand, are aggressive, batty-jackin peak-time tracks embracing classic acid aesthetics, while 'Positive Negative' is a stretched-out house jam incorporating the tussle of wonky boogie and tribal bumps.Van Hulle drops the tempo on 'Hooli Goose', taking slow release hypnosis turns while making a marching band sound cool. The dry drum machines, melted bass and schizo sounds of 'Ride The Dragon' will appeal to the freaks, and the dreamy 'Happy Bird' is a tripped-out set of ambient and lo-fi themes. Last but not least, Dexter enters the stage to do what he does best with 'Thick': showing who's boss of the 808 with a straight-up electro essential.

Parasole's music fits the bill for cutting-edge electronic music. Infrared Vision is a display of his love for polyrhythmic drum patterns, post-club sketches, twisted dance floor gems and classy, big room-ready tunes.Few words of the artist:‘‘When I started to conceptualize my album I had a few end goals’’, explains Parasole. ‘‘I wanted to string my own style through Infrared Vision, so it would be familiar to the people who like my music. In tandem, I strived to produce a fresh voice sonically and experimented with a few new production techniques. I also grabbed ideas outside of techno and house, because I didn't want to be influenced by anything new. I was listening to a lot of jazz, hip-hop, Nine Inch Nails and Prince for example.’’ Parasole took his time to write, produce and record Infrared Vision, dividing the process into three steps. ‘‘First I wrote the album in words, pinning down ideas and track concepts on a notepad. Subsequently I transferred my ideas to my gear. Due to a heavy tour schedule I sometimes brought gear with me on the road, to continue my sketch process on the hardware. I then recorded it at home and at Phil Moffa’s studio in New York. When the music was fully finished the album morphed to its final version. Phil Moffa laid down the final mixdown at Butcha Sound Studios, while Marco Spaventi handled the mastering.’’

The Detroit but now Alabama based legend presents “Paradygm Shift”. Hood: "The idea behind “Paradygm Shift” is similar to a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings, I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset.” Volume two serves up two more killer Techno floor bombs by the never disappointing originator. “Master Jack” is a classy and deadly effective cut that gets its strength from a simple, yet biting stack of funky chords, while pulsating bass lines and rattling hats are holding it together. More fast-paced action can be found on “Magnet”, a no-nonsense, minimalist stomper you can store in your peak-time section. Refined Techno action times two, but what did you expect?
