With 16 J-Funk tracks ranging from 1977 to 1988, this compilation is aiming to bring the finest City Pop experience to the listener.City Pop is basically the Japanese answer to the US disco/funk wave, with a subtle mix between boogie, funk, jazz and soul, very popular in the 80's and on the verge of a full revival these days, especially being heavily sampled in Hip-Hop with producers like Alchemist or in Vaporwave.City Pop is a predominantly Japanese genre which originally became popular with the blooming economy of the country during the 70s-80s, mostly having a relation with the everyday urban and luxury life of Japanese metropolitan areas. It often aimed a more adult audience than J-Pop and had a more contemporary and Western sound than Kayōkyoku and Enka.Adding to that was the presence of urban and romantic lyrical themes, clean production, longer structures, and more specifically, the upbeat grooves from Funk and Disco. This is when city pop began to develop itself, being diverse in nature by changing between upbeat and mellow styles. By the late-70s there was also an increased influence of Jazz Fusion, Lounge and Exotica, with some tracks taking the form of instrumentals. All tracks re-mastered for this special release. Featuring artists like Aru Takamara , Hitomi ''Penny'' Tohyama , Junko Ohashi , Junko Yagami ,Kaoru Akimoto , Masaki Ueda ,Makato Matsushita , Seaside Lovers and many others. TIP!!

Pioneer DJ, Guy Cuevas made his name by being one of the first resident in the famous Parisian club “Le Palace”, shortly after it opened in 1978. Attracting some of the biggest names in the entertainment business like Prince, Madonna, Kenzo, Serge Gainsbourg, the location was a must-go for anyone wanting to party over the Paris adopted Cuban expat's amazing selection.Released in 1983, Guy Cuevas’ 12” Single "Obsession" is probably one of the best French Disco-Boogie records, enriched by Jean-Paul Goude's artwork for the cover. The A-side's Nassau mix by François K is a sensual and airy journey, while the B-side's London mix offers a more realistic approach that will please the more classic-listening disco enthusiasts.

Don’t be fooled by Spellacey’s lower profile: amongst those who know, the Melbourne-based New Zealander is widely regarded as a seriously dustyfingered digger, capable of unearthing and championing ridiculously good records from all four corners of the globe. He sells some of these exceptional finds through his Crown Ruler online store, though there are many more that he keeps hidden from the public. From synth-laden Zambian reggae and sumptuous orchestral Afro-soul, to humid Trinidadian boogie and horizontal Italian jazz-funk, Spellacey offers a whirlwind trip through the most kaleidoscopic and exotic parts of his epic collection. As you’d expect from a man who has traveled the world hunting down records, the majority of the 15 tracks will be unknown to all but a handful of similarly minded crate diggers. In fact, some are so obscure that you’ll struggle to find any mention of them at all online. This could be your only chance to own the boogie-era reggae-disco brilliance of Le Banda De Martin’s “Mi Dueno” and the tear-jerking Afro-soul shuffle of Kosmik 3’s “I’m Gonna Pack” (here featured in exclusive Jeremy Spellacey re-edit form).Highlights come thick and fast, from the first note to the last. Check, for example, the wild P-funk of Acayouman’s “Funk Around”, the dancing marimbas and undulating grooves of Feladey’s “Forest Music” and the impeccable South African jazz-funk of Stimela’s sought-after 1983 debut single, “I Love You”. Other notable highlights include Ezy & Isaac’s spellbinding 1977 cut “Let Your Body Move (Oba Balu Balu)”, seemingly the missing link between Rotary Connection, Fela Kuta and soundscape disco, Devon Russell’s inspired reggaesoul cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up”, and Mike Fabulous’ “Wang East”, a sublime chunk of summery electro-reggae from Spellacey’s native New Zealand. We could go on, but we don’t want to spoil all the surprises. Suffice to say, Crown Ruler Sound will surprise and entertain you in equal measure.

A few years ago, Melodies family members Floating Points and DJ Red Greg got their hands on a couple of original 70s obscurities. While these standout records shone brightly in their own right, the two DJs saw the potential to create their own edits behind the scenes, finely attuning the original versions to modern-day dancefloor standards. Of these new recordings, they cut only five copies for themselves and a few DJ friends of theirs. Today, Melodies International is very proud to bring you MEL006 and MEL007. Fully licensed, lovingly mastered to the highest possible standards and carefully edited to dial up that dancefloor enjoyment, these two ‘You’re A Melody’ classics weren’t originally meant to get official releases. But due to popular request, they are now available to play and share in very special moments at parties around the world.MEL6 arrives as a 7-inch, with the original version and the edit on the flip. First released in 1979 as a three-minute up-tempo library recording, “Disco Baby”, one of 10 tracks off a record available to license for film, radio, television and other media, held some hidden magic that would only get uncovered almost four decades later. Informed by years of combined dancefloor experience, Floating Points and Red Greg have slightly tweaked the original material, realising that played in the right context, it can become a true disco anthem.

Kalita Records are extremely excited to announce their second release, Okyerema Asante's Ghanaian disco monster, 'Sabi (Get Down)'. After touring the world and recording with both Hugh Masekela and Oneness of Juju, 'Sabi (Get Down)' was Okyerema's first solo record, released privately in limited numbers on his label Atumpan Records in 1980/1. Recorded and manufactured in the USA, but only ever released on the African continent, this self-funded, scarce, and brilliant afro-disco LP regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. This is the first time that 'Sabi (Get Down)' has ever been officially reissued, and we are happy to reproduce it in its original, 14 minute long form (check out Lady Eke Ete's amazing vocals at the 13 minute mark!), backed by the equally impressive 'That's My Girl' on the B side. In addition, we are glad to accompany it with extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before-seen photos, detailing Okyerema's career from his membership of Ghana's legendary band Hedzolleh to performing with Paul Simon and Fleetwood Mac twenty years later. We hope that you love both tracks as much as we do, and invite you to join us in celebrating the musical world of Okyerema Asante! Check out www.kalitarecords.co.uk closer to the release date for a video interview with Okyerema, and for extra photos!

Almost four decades after its original release in 1979, the record has become a favourite with the Glitterbox crowds, creating a seminal moment at Ministry of Sound when David Morales dropped it at the party in March 2017. An absolute must! US Pressing, 500 only pressed. While the landscape of popular music recordings from 1970s SouthAfrica is dominated by tightly produced nuggets of township soul and jive, there is a notable seam of Afrocentric outsiders that runs through the decade. Their roots lie in Malombo’s angular juxtaposition of guitar and percussion, an avant-garde channeling of raw African soul that announced the arrival of tribal jazz. Taking the mantle in 1974, Xoliso expanded and electrified the Malombo sound and brought it into the domain of ethnic rock. As the decade wore on, Harari translated Xoliso’s fire into an evocative performance art with less terrestrial grit but more cosmic swing to suit the tastes of the disco era. Former Harari collaborators, Oupa Segwai and Doc Mthalane later collided with bass wizard Tata Sibeko at the start of the 80s to form the core of Kabasa. Straddling two decades, Kabasa carved a niche at the intersection of Afro-rock and funky disco jive with a trio of outstanding releases during their brief trajectory from 1980 to 1982.Their debut was an evocation of ancestral spirit and a call for cultural unity wrapped in the infectious veneer of boisterous bass pops, thick power chords and dreamy Roland synthesizers. The album channeled the great musical movements of the decade that preceded it and opened the door to the bubblegum era that followed. Kabasa’s self-titled first album marks the beginning of an archival reissue series from South African label SHARP-FLAT.

Multi-instrumentalist and Music Producer Jordan Chini armed with an array of guitars, basses, drum machines, and vintage synths has fused the spirit of lo-fi songwriting and psychedelia with the aesthetics of experimental funk and soul under his brand-new guise “BOY DUDE”. Sculpted using peculiar studio techniques, “Cassette For You” garnished its title, and was ultimately mixed and rendered through a Tascam Portastudio 4 track recorder, granting the album a warm and classic tape compression vibe. As a result, there is a distinct mood and atmosphere to his music, which traverses seamlessly through many eras and styles of music, without any specific destination in mind. The LP was initially influenced by Jordan digging out some of his Fathers’ (Robert Chini – former Songwriter for Motown Records) recordings from the late 70’s, which inspired Chini to begin writing and experimenting in a similar vein. The result was a stunning marriage of vintage moods with modern songwriting sonics, which transformed into the “BOY DUDE” project. Additionally, this LP is a result of Chini reaching a turning point in his own musical development: experimenting with blending his songwriting background with his “funky” side and his increasing love and understanding of vintage synthesizers. Each tune on the LP delves deep into the world of BOY DUDE, which can be fuzzy, emotional, trippy, dreamy, and well, let’s leave the rest up for you to decide

Soundway Records present a new compilation of twenty rare and mostly unavailable tracks from the slick and sassy world of Nigerian pop music and club culture of the early 1980s.Buoyed by an explosive oil boom and a return to democracy after a series of military dictatorships, Nigeria’s economy in the years of the early ‘80’s was mirrored by its recording industry as countless young artists and groups hit the airwaves and dancefloors of the capital and beyond. It was a glossy, brash new form of pop music born out of ashes of late 1970s disco and funk and, just as in America, was the soundtrack to a new generation for whom money, style and flirtation trumped the overblown psychedelia of the previous decade. Eager to sound as American as possible with no hint of the fervor for afro-beat, afro-rock and afrocentric thinking that the 1970s had thrown up, a new generation of young artists and performers turned their backs on their cultural roots in music and sought a new kind of stardom and fame firmly connected to the glossy, snazzy world of the 1980s that was erupting in the USA and Europe.

Black Pearl Records is very proud to present a real 80´s futuristic proto club banger from the STRÖER Brothers, with lots of clubby remixes by buddies & friends. The original track "Night Falls" was only released on a very limited hand-spread promo 12inch, which was especially pressed for the Kunstdisko art-project for the 24th Olympic games in 1988 in Seoul / South-Korea. Together with the Goethe Institut, they created the "Kunstdisco" project for germany, which was located at the Yoido Ankara Square and took part for the german Seoul Olympic Art Festival. The Ströer Brothers, who were responsible for the video & music sector, invided and encouraged 25 young german composers and producers (among of them was the young DJ West Bam) to produce new music for the Kunstdisco between Rap and new electronic club music from the end of the 80´s. The Ströer Brothers, together with Howard Fine & Nadeen Holloway, were introduced by many DJs who played their music, that they espacially created for this event. Next to the in-house project Mudegg, the single audio tracks of "Night Falls" were givin to musical buddies like First Touch, Enzo Elia, DJ Rocca, Siggatunes and Manelet to remix them and Black Pearl is more than proud to present a great variety of remixes, styles and visons on the original track.

Featuring the iciest synths, the slickest basslines, and other '80s-sounding vibes from the Caribbean islands, all of the tracks are fully licensed. First up in the series is the killer Junior Byron track "Trying To Hold On," written and produced by Wild Fire's Oliver Chapman and originally released on the Wild Fire label back in 1985. The A-side includes the original mix as well as the Version. On the B-side we've got the epic "Megamix." The track was reworked by Gerd Janson, who created the mix old-school style with two copies of the record, a mixer, and an EFX box. Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from EgyptIn the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn’t heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s.Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band’s versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like “Sah” to psych rock like “Horreya” or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as “Edba Mn Gded”. I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn’t a strong compilation of the group’s songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Late 80s South African dance floor winners only! Selected by DJ Okapi and Antal, the compilation holds tracks by Jivaro, The Hard Workers, Ayobayo Band, S.Y.B. & many more. This is the sharp electronic music that fuelled the local Pantsula dances during the 80s and 90s . A must have for fans of Bubblegum and Kwaito music. TOP TIP!The 12 tracks selected for Pantsula! come from a very unique, very different time and place. They represent the birth of electronic dance music in South Africa, through the songs of one particular independent label from the time: Music Team. The sound represents the culmination of the bubblegum era, when South Africa’s disco artists outgrew their American influences and forged an increasingly electronic and ‘local’ pop sound.Evolving over time since long before the 80s, the distinctly South African subculture of Pantsula is more closely associated with an attitude, a style and a signature dance, rather than any specific sound. In the late 1980s and early 90s, Pantsula was also the name given to a new type of dance music taking over the streets of South Africa, influenced by earlier bubblegum and the rise of Shangaan Disco, but with a far broader appeal and a harder, purely electronic sound.

Soon after music trends shifted to (electronic) disco and James' music became out of fashion, leaving 'Rhythm Of Life' to be the only album he released to date. The early early 80′s saw him have a few studio sessions from which more electronic output like Wuf Ticket’s ‘The Key (Prelude Records) resulted. After releasing their sizzling underground dancefloor EP “Enjoy The Ride” in 2015, Social Lovers are back with a double sided powerhouse. Combining subtle and withdrawn, melodic and low key structures, always punctuated by a driving funky drum machine beat, Matty P. and Meg Doherty are an unstoppable sultry synth duo, making 80s inspired modern funk music, with “Drop Me A Line” fitting right in with their past catalog, but bringing a newly inspired NYC basement flavor to the play. Meg pushes her lotion butter voice forward over the beat, and calls for you to give her a “buzz” if you need a lift. The flip side slows it down to a dim candle in a small room, while Meg aches about trust and devotion, and before you know it, a saxophone whisks you in the dampness, and catches your heart off guard. Social Lovers have done it again here, and this 7” single makes us yearn for more.

Only 1 per customer! In 1981, Bermudian band Paradise recorded ‘Sizzlin’ Hot’, a flawless album of original material in the disco, boogie and AOR style. The album is set for a re-issue on Frederiksberg Records in Summer 2017. Producer, writer and pianist Grant Williams formed several bands before becoming the fourth member of Paradise, alongside bassist Wincy Woolridge, drummer Ronnie Lopes and singer June Ventzos - whose voice commands the album. For five years, the group regularly performed in hotels before hitting the local Z.B.M. Studios to record their sole album. ‘Sizzlin Hot’ is inspired by the sound of Earth, Wind & Fire. The album delivers several blisteringtracks that could have been huge club anthems if the record had been promoted outside of Bermuda.Since Bermuda is a fairly remote island, it’s no wonder that Paradise remains virtually unknown to this day. It is all the more reason why this album stands-out and has universal appeal… though it was only ever intended as a “local thing”, as Grant Williams says. That will change in 2017.

These two tracks really showcase the sounds of South Africa around the early to late 80’s, the influences from American synth pop and House that would then lead later into many of these records being played at the wrong speed which ultimately became the original Kwaito sound from South Africa."

Amazing collection of Disco Music released in the 80s (1980-84) on the Nigerian label Duomo Music Ltd. and reissued here for the first time..The late 70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Mr Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young monied businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black’s “Someone to love” (DSL 001) which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, “Honey, Honey” (DSL 002) was the label’s second release and his most successful album. Also produced the labels 19th release, Bindiga’s, “No More Starvation” (DSL 019), an afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and djs and changes hands for huge sums. Its been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah´s disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time.

Brazilian mid tempo boogie double header. We’ve been playing these two out for the last couple of years and they are firm favourites. ‘E Novamente Mas Que Nada’ is the opening track from Reseda’s 1979 album on Som Livre. An ultra catchy vocal hook, boogie guitars and synths lead into a piano and cuica breakdown and horns to finish. One of the finest in the genre in our opinion.‘Ginga’ is taken from Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti’s self-titled masterpiece, reissued on Mr Bongo. Arguably the most immediate and club friendly track from the album, it always turns heads. Another premium example of Brazilian boogie from the masters of the sound and producers for the likes of Rita Lee, Erasmo Carlos, Don Beto, Marcos Valle, Tim Maia, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Sandra Sa, Painel de Controle and many more.

XL Middleton returns with his new album “Things Are Happening”.XL Middleton is a musician from California whose format falls into the funk-laden style the region has traditionally been known for. The Pasadena-based artist/producer has been hard at work for years crafting melodic, chord-heavy tunes and which have earned him accolades on major platforms, as well as national print coverage in the Washington Post and major local print coverage in LA Weekly, where his album “Tap Water” made it to a Best of 2015 list. XL has toured internationally in Japan, Canada, and throughout Europe, catering to fans of the funked-out West Coast sound.XL has released volumes of work, the sound of which embodies the party feel, bringing music back to where it was before it found its way into upscale clubs, while at the same time mixing it with a futuristic brand of funk inspired by legends such as George Clinton, Roger Troutman, & Cameo, not to mention hip hop funksters like Battlecat & DJ Quik. He evolved from his beginnings as a hip hop artist to a full-fledged modern funk musician, educated by the music he once sampled in the course of creating rap beats. In addition, he founded another imprint, MoFunk Records, with Funkmosphere resident DJ and fellow LA native Eddy Funkster. XL has also released music in conjunction with noteworthy labels such as Bastard Jazz, Omega Supreme, and Voltaire, effectively bridging the gap between fans of modern funk/80's boogie and 90's g-funk, all of which has been tremendously influential to the XL Middleton sound.

Peter Hunnigale aka Mr Honeyvibes was born in South London on December 12th, 1960. Peter Hunnigale was to develop into one of Britain's most formidable reggae ‘Lovers Rock’ artist of our time. It was clear at a tender age Peter's main interest was in music and being born of Jamaican parentage, he was exposed and influenced by music of West Indian culture. Untamed Love is an UFO in Peter Hunnigale’s career, recorded at Omega studio (London) and originally released on the Cosmic label in 1986. Some people have no words to describe it. You can call it brit-boogie, rare funk, sick jam, musical bomb, or god jam, whatever it’s a typical mid 80's tune with a rhythmic background sound that is captivating and memorable, thanks to heavyweight synth and awesome vocals. The original 12’’ vinyl record is still very hard to find and expensive nowadays. If you are about to discover this song, make sure you are sit down when you listen to it because this song will blow you down “hey girl I like the way you smile”. Growing up in Britain meant that Peter Hunnigale was also open to other genres of music and with seeing the popular acts of the day perform on television and hearing the songs on the radio Peter knew what he wanted to be. Peter is also a great musician and did live work with reggae legends such as The Chosen Few, The Pioneers, B.B. Seaton and many others, while earning the respect of their peers as a competent bassist and qualified engineer. He won a Best Newcomer award at the Celebrity Awards in 1987, and won Best British Reggae Album at the British Reggae Industry Awards the same year.

Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official reissue of ARIAN: A rare and underrated Disco album originally released in 1981 by PGP RTB label and fully recorded in New-York.Arian Kerliu was born in the small town of Macedonia, Dibra or Debar. Arian’s first recordings for a local radio stations were at the age of 14, appearing in almost every music festival in Ex-Yugoslavia. When he was 19, Arian came to New York City, working different jobs and studying music. His first music engagements were in various clubs throughout the city, playing guitar and singing. He then met with James Benjamin-Fish, well known bass-guitar player, with whom he formed the band ARIAN & FUNKY FAMILY, mainly performing in the best clubs of NYC at that time.Together, they came to an idea to record an album of their own. After travelling throughout the US, they got to know each other very well, and had connected with probably some of the best musicians you could find at that time. Thus they had Sinclair Acey arranging three songs and Hubert Eaves, as a writer of "Still Together", a beautiful ballad written in honor of his wife. By that time Hubert had gained two Grammy awards for Stephanie Mills’ albums. Kornelius Cambell also wrote and composed two songs of the album, which Sinclair Acey arranged. The album also contains a great cover of “Can’t Say Goodbye” by Bobby Caldwell, a song that Arian and James had interpreted almost every night when touring. And all of this completed with the background vocals of Tawatha Agee (Mtume), Shevill Alexander and Sybil Thomas (Raw Silk).Arian & Funky Family band was then invited in Yugoslavia for a European tour, including James, Kornelius and Stacey, but also others great musicians such as William "Spaceman" Patterson, Zane Mark, Steve Kroon, Trevor Gale, Alex Foster, or Reggie Marks, not forgetting Flame Braithwaite and Meli'sa Morgan on background vocals. Having the material of the 4 songs ready and finalized, the PGP RTB label from Belgrade offered them to release an album, with the idea to also adapt the songs with lyrics from the famous Croatian musician and writer Mario Mihaljevic.Today, Favorite Recordings is deeply honored to bring this brilliant LP back to life. In order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all DJs and music collectors.

Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice proudly present the 3rd edition of their acclaimed AOR Global Sounds compilations series. Another brilliant selection of 14 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1976 and 1985 in various parts of the world. On AOR Global Sounds Vol.3, DJ and producer Charles Maurice delivers again a fine overview of the AOR and WestCoast influences for many artists in the late 70s and early 80s. Even more than on previous volumes, he selected highly forgotten productions, deeply infused with Disco and Soul flavors. Many of these great gems were naturally produced through all the USA, often made by artists with a very short career and as private press. For example, Jeff Silna only recorded this amazing song after winning the competition of a long gone Miami radio station, the Stratus project started around 1974 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and was a band led by Bob Ackley who only released this 7” single in 1976 after recording a full album and doing a few gigs around Michigan, John Kontol (Jon Konteau), however having credits for a few productions and appearances and still acting as a musician, never released another LP after his heartbreaking experience with Erect Records, that never rewarded him for his work and even change his name against his consent, as for “Dirt (In The Sky” by 7 Days Unlimited, whose both members were from Pittsburgh area, where a lot of dirt was literally flying in the air, the song was released in 1980 on a very limited 500 copies 7” single. But this kind of stories and waste of talent is not solely and American privilege, from Willy Santana (member of Placa Luminosa) in Brazil, and Funky Team in Sweden, to Stacey and Out Of The Fog in Canada, this 3rd edition proves again if necessary the international scope and fervor of this music scene, and the surprising amount of great music that go unnoticed at that time.Fully remastered from originals, with great attention to sound quality as always, AOR Global Sounds Vol.3 (1976-1985, selected by Charles Maurice) is presented by Favorite Recordings in a gatefold vinyl double LP.

Pure early 80's electronic Disco joy for packed, sweaty dance-floors. Not much is known about Komiko, an undercover studio outfit that featured guest vocals from Carol Williams, Tracey Weber & Vicky D and was produced by the criminally underrated Darryl Payne (who manned the boards for Sinnamon, Sharon Redd, Carol Williams, NV & many more) but it's okay, as this - their sole release, more than makes up for it! Strut present a new reissue of Walter Gibbons’ ‘Jungle Music’ compilation LP,the definitive collection of Gibbons’ groundbreaking remixes during theheyday of New York’s disco era.Starting out as a DJ and known for his skilful manipulation of percussive disco breaks at his Galaxy 21 residency in Manhattan, Gibbons brought this ethic to his remixes from the start with his first outing for Salsoul, a re-work of Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ which completely disassembled the track for the dancefloor. He developed a knack for drawing the rhythmic essence out ofboth the brilliant and the mediocre as tracks like Jakki’s ‘Sun… Sun… Sun’were transformed into unique abstract dancefloor beat edits. The tracks spawned a series of groundbreaking remixes, with many versionsonly appearing on acetate for his own personal use as a DJ including Gladys Knight’s ‘It’s A Better Than Good Time’. He continued to work with Salsoul(Loleatta Holloway) and West End Records (Bettye Lavette) before branchingout to include more leftfield material in his work – collaborations with LooseJoints’ Steve D’Acquisto (Sandy Mercer), Steve Standard (Strafe) and ArthurRussell would all follow, a natural fit for Gibbons’ uncompromising remix style. After a short time based in Seattle during the late ‘70s, where he played atthe Sanctuary nightclub, he returned to New York and, in his later years, he discovered God and refused to play records with a negative message.Tragically, he died of an AIDS related illness during the ‘90s, a largelyforgotten figure. Now revered as a true pioneer of the art of the remix, Gibbons’ key releasesare brought together on this essential celebration. Package includes sleevenotes by Tim Lawrence, author of the acclaimed ‘Love Saves The Day’,along with rare photos from across Gibbons’ career as a DJ and producer.

18 years on from the release of the very first ‘Disco Spectrum’ LP, Joey Negro and Sean P revisit the project, selecting the finest cuts from this much-loved album series. Three volumes of Disco Spectrum were released on BBE between 1999 and 2002, heralding a disco revival that, almost two decades later, just keeps gaining momentum.Known by a plethora of aliases including Jakatta and Akabu as well as Joey Negro, Isle of White native Dave Lee has been at the epicenter of UK dance music since the late 1980s. One of the first British producers to incorporate disco samples into dance music, he took his favourite genre all the way to the top of the charts in the early 90s when he masterminded Take That’s cover version of ‘Relight My Fire’ by Dan Hartman. Never an artist to rest on his laurels, Dave has remained at the top of his game ever since; producing chart hits and underground club tracks alike, touring the world with live disco act The Sunburst Band and running his own label Z Records. The Best Of Disco Spectrum features a wide-ranging collection of floor-fillers including: Rare Pleasure – ‘Let Me Down Easy’ (infamously sampled by David Morales for 90s club smash ‘Needin U’), Ramona Brooks – ‘I Don’t Want You Back’ (revived by Patrick Forge andSean P on pirate radio in the late 80s), Bunny Mack - 'Let Me Love You' (an early forerunner of today’s popular afro/house sound) and Syreeta - 'Can't Shake Your Love' (snappy, bass-led funk from the former Mrs Stevie Wonder, mixed by Larry Levan).

Bosq’s new 45 rpm single sees him diving deeper into funky disco, creating songs that are more musical but maintain the rawness that translates to a feeling on the dancefloor. The A-side features a collaboration between Bosq and vocalist Megan Doherty from Social Lovers which has already garnered a “tune of the month” feature and a 10/10 rating from Mixmag. Mark Usher’s funk-laden rhythm guitar attack punctuates the song while Megan’s silky smooth vocal delivery glide on top of the Bosq-crafted groove with an understated cool and sexiness that permeate the entire track. The featured vocalist on the flip of this double A-side disco burner is none other than soul-highness herself Nicole Willis, who was featured on Bosq’s previous single “Bad For Me”. Her powerful vocal style reminiscent of disco divas past along with Mark channeling his inner “Nile Rodgers” delivers yet another future dancefloor classic. Calling Medellin, Colombia home for the time being, these 2 tracks were the last songs Bosq made in his US studio. Seeking inspiration and surrounded by a new landscape literally and musically while finding new partners to collaborate with on projects such as Body Music with The Rapture’s drummer Vito Roccoforte he continues to hone his craft. Along with dropping the Tumbala EP on Soul Clap, the full-length album San Jose 51 recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela All-Stars and his various remix work for Fania, and Cultures Of Soul to name a few, Bosq’s relentless work ethic, output and openness to further develop his sound can only mean good things for Latin, Afro, Disco, Funk, and Soul aficionados alike.

For the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions, Inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious South Side Chicago singer/song writer Larry Dixon.Larry's raw songs capture the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. They also perfectly illustrate Larry’s ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, transcended by his determination to write and produce music. With the support of his faithful musicians, Larry's success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through. This is the story of Larry Dixon, his label LAD Productions, Inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.Jerome Derradji is proud to reactivate Past Due Records - the boogie funk division of Still Music to release this fantastic archive – what many consider to be the Holy Grail - of Chicago Funk, Boogie and Soul.

The label had quite a short life between the middle 70s and early 80s, producing only singles from mostly unknown and forgotten artists. Amongst them was this brilliant and obscure release by Karriem, very hard to find in its original version. Unearthed again in Charles Maurice’s collection, it’s today reissued on vinyl for the first time, presented in a deluxe version, housed in a classic tip-on jacket.

The entire record minus two tracks of 10 total are all upbeat with afro-latin breaks, dope choral vocal arrangements and chunky bass and conga lines, but don t sleep, the lower bpm songs are great mellow gems. Gilles Peterson says: "If a Cuban record had come out on Sleeping Bag Records in 1982, I think it would ve sounded a bit like this. It s an eccentric middle ground between Latin-styled pop and disco".

Tenderness - A short-lived Disco project helmed by James Purdie and Skip Mahoney only released one 45 and one 12" single during their brief existence. Known for their work with Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers & Frank Hooker & Positive People and many more, this duo were undoubtedly a highly talented producer, songwriter and keyboardist combination. Originally released on RCA in 1978 'Keep On Trying' was an underground club hit. The record still packs an immense punch today, it's a mixture of tough streetwise drums and percussion and swooping dramatic strings and brass will surely hit the spot for Disco aficionados. The kind of record you can imagine causing all out pandemonium at the Garage while the scents of amyl and sweat fill your nostrils. The kind of record that would make everyone on the raised stages and podiums at the Powerhouse whoop and holler in collective joy as Frankie stylishly segues it into a punishing percussion break-down. Yep. It's THAT kind of Disco record, so rare and so coveted that even the infamous DJ Harvey put it over his knee and gave it a good editing way back when. There's been a shedload of poor imitations knocking around, dodgy Euro bootlegs etc, but this 2017 repress is from the MASTER TAPES (Yes, we can prove it) and is fully, 100% LEGIT in every way. 'Keep On Trying' - now available again, released in conjunction with RCA. Back on the streets. Same as it ever was! Essential Disco heat here, buy on sight!
