Only one per customer!Heavy debut release by Melbourne based music agency/record store Crown Ruler. This is a three track EP by South African studio outfit Focus. BIG tipComprised of Sello Mmutung and Keith Hutchinson, the original six track album 'Zulu Disco' was laid down in Johannesburg circa 1983. The original release has almost mystical qualities, no-one actually knows if it had a vinyl release or not. The only known media that exists is the cassette this was mastered from. A super strong EP that doesn't have a weak moment, side A for the full dancefloor, side B for deep afrocentric, mid-tempo chuggers. Including the original version of Picnic, later covered by Starlight and Kumasi..

Soundway Records present a new compilation of twenty rare and mostly unavailable tracks from the slick and sassy world of Nigerian pop music and club culture of the early 1980s.Buoyed by an explosive oil boom and a return to democracy after a series of military dictatorships, Nigeria’s economy in the years of the early ‘80’s was mirrored by its recording industry as countless young artists and groups hit the airwaves and dancefloors of the capital and beyond. It was a glossy, brash new form of pop music born out of ashes of late 1970s disco and funk and, just as in America, was the soundtrack to a new generation for whom money, style and flirtation trumped the overblown psychedelia of the previous decade. Eager to sound as American as possible with no hint of the fervor for afro-beat, afro-rock and afrocentric thinking that the 1970s had thrown up, a new generation of young artists and performers turned their backs on their cultural roots in music and sought a new kind of stardom and fame firmly connected to the glossy, snazzy world of the 1980s that was erupting in the USA and Europe.

Musik ohne Halbwertzeit. Hören macht glücklich.

“Lovin’ Mighty Fire” is Howard Williams’ third Japanese music compilation for the Ace Records house of labels - this time, for BGP International. Assembled in between his job as a record distributor and his monthly Japan Blues show for NTS radio, the first two have taken a look at the late 50s for a blast of Japanese rockabilly (“Nippon Rock’n’Roll” CDWIKD 313), then the 60s and 70s for a romp in Japanese surf music (“Nippon Guitars” CDWIKD 297). Following his retrospective of jazz singer Maki Asakawa for Honest Jon’s, this new outing searches for the soul music of Japan, from the early 70s to the early 80s. Japan has long been known as the final destination for many a collectible soul record. Yet, who suspected that some fine soul grooves were recorded for the domestic market, from ballads, to funk and disco? Strangely enough, some of the busiest writers and producers in this field came from a late 60s rock band, Happy End, but on listening to their collaborations, their rhythmic, soulful feel is immediately apparent. The bluesy funk of Lily; the soul-diva brilliance of Minako Yoshida – represented here in both slow-grind mode and epic disco; the maverick genius of Haruomi Hosono; the lively songstress Yasuko Agawa; and the sultry steaminess of Mari Natsuki, and more. This album finally plants a Japanese flag firmly on the global map of soul.

Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official single reissue of I Believe! by Calvin B. Rhone: A very rare Gospel/Disco masterpiece, originally released at only 1000 private-press copies, and surprisingly unknown and underrated until today.Calvin Bernard Rhone, a native of Los Angeles, has been ministering in word and song for more than 40 years throughout the US and abroad. He acknowledges that he is passionate about music; yet purposed for ministry. Beginning his professional singing career at age eight, he has shared the stage with possibly every major Gospel artist from the 60’s to present. In 1983, he released the album Intimate Friends on his own label, C.B.R. Records. Recently discovered by DJ and collector Charles Maurice, the LP has never received the attention and fame it deserves. It was anyway obvious for the DJ and Favorite Recordings, that some of the tracks it includes would for sure become real classics for all Disco and Funk music lovers and deejays.Officially licensed to Calvin B. Pashlo Records was based in Oakland and owned by producer and musician Leroy Smith, who is also known for his Ocampo Records’ imprint, where he produced and recorded the very first songs from Darondo. The label had quite a short life between the middle 70s and early 80s, producing only singles from mostly unknown and forgotten artists. Amongst them was this brilliant and obscure release by Karriem, very hard to find in its original version. Unearthed again in Charles Maurice’s collection, it’s today reissued on vinyl for the first time, presented in a deluxe version, housed in a classic tip-on jacket.

Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice proudly present the 3rd edition of their acclaimed AOR Global Sounds compilations series. Another brilliant selection of 14 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1976 and 1985 in various parts of the world. On AOR Global Sounds Vol.3, DJ and producer Charles Maurice delivers again a fine overview of the AOR and WestCoast influences for many artists in the late 70s and early 80s. Even more than on previous volumes, he selected highly forgotten productions, deeply infused with Disco and Soul flavors. Many of these great gems were naturally produced through all the USA, often made by artists with a very short career and as private press. For example, Jeff Silna only recorded this amazing song after winning the competition of a long gone Miami radio station, the Stratus project started around 1974 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and was a band led by Bob Ackley who only released this 7” single in 1976 after recording a full album and doing a few gigs around Michigan, John Kontol (Jon Konteau), however having credits for a few productions and appearances and still acting as a musician, never released another LP after his heartbreaking experience with Erect Records, that never rewarded him for his work and even change his name against his consent, as for “Dirt (In The Sky” by 7 Days Unlimited, whose both members were from Pittsburgh area, where a lot of dirt was literally flying in the air, the song was released in 1980 on a very limited 500 copies 7” single. But this kind of stories and waste of talent is not solely and American privilege, from Willy Santana (member of Placa Luminosa) in Brazil, and Funky Team in Sweden, to Stacey and Out Of The Fog in Canada, this 3rd edition proves again if necessary the international scope and fervor of this music scene, and the surprising amount of great music that go unnoticed at that time.Fully remastered from originals, with great attention to sound quality as always, AOR Global Sounds Vol.3 (1976-1985, selected by Charles Maurice) is presented by Favorite Recordings in a gatefold vinyl double LP.

Steve Monite's album, Only You, is a prime slab of Nigerian boogie. It's sinewy, compact and sexy, a little bit of disco mixed with a big dose of funk. Loose and groovy, it's a sonic seduction from another dimension. With legendary producer Tony Okoroji at the desk, and influential musician and sound engineer, Nkono Teles, creating magic on the synth, the title track is raw and melodic, dark and sweet at the same time. Steve sings about putting out a fire, but the music, and Stella Monye's sultry backing vocals, stoke it with aural gasoline. You've never heard a song less likely to lower the temperature and let cooler heads prevail. While never quite reaching the heights of 'Only You', 'Welcome My Love' and 'Things Fall Apart' keep the groove going, the later with a distinctly Latin swing. A couple of extended 'Disco Jams' and an obligatory, romantic ballad ('I Had A Dream') round out the record. In all honesty, however, it is 'Only You' that you'll keep going back to. It's a killer track, an Afro Boogie classic that would hold its own on any dance floor in the world, whether in the 80s or today. - Peter Moore

Another rare nugget culled from West Ends incredibly influential back catalog. "There's Never Been Someone Like You" is a smoothed out soulful Disco jam and a Paradise Garage classic! Produced by the mighty Kenton Nix whose credits include working on records for Taana Gardner, Gwen McCrae and The Treacherous Three among many others and featuring the exceptional vocal talents of underground Soul singer Bobby Youngblood. Kenton Nix was something of a prodigious production talent who worked on numerous independent and major label projects and was a good friend of Larry Levan and had the honor of hearing his rough mixes and versions through the Paradise Garage sound-system which helped shape the end result of the records he was involved in. "There's Never Been Someone Like You" has always been a popular and sought after 12" among Disco / Boogie / Funk collecting aficionados since it's release nearly 34 years ago in 1980 and continues to be an influential record now in contemporary dance music. An utterly essential Disco-groove! This is the very first time this record has been re-issued and this pressing features both the long "dance" version and shorter 7" mixes of the track just like the original pressing from 1980. It has been re-mastered and re-pressed with the permission of and in conjunction with West End Records, New York City.

Growing up in Jamaica, young Rowland Abrahams loved dancing to James Brown so much that he earnt himself the nickname 'Papas' Got'. He later moved to Paris and in 1979 more or less single-handedly recorded the 'I Wanna Love' LP on the RGR label. Admittedly not an album with a heavy yield, the only pearl being the title track which Rocafort Records are releasing as a 12" with an exclusive Al Kent edit on the B side.No rocket science involved here, just pure killer afro-disco-funk groove from start to finish.Urgent funky guitar riffs, thumping drums and a strong hint of late 70s euro-disco fueled by the slightly unintelligible lyrics delivered with a Frenchie patois twist

We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we couldplay latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being thatit had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ’d across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn’talways been easy. Recently DJ’s such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record,Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J andYoung Marco – to name a few – have opened things up with very diverse sets toyounger audiences; Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond. We’re seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude oflegendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latinback to back. At the same time it isn't a nostalgic or retro movement, peoplehave a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant andexciting time – we are proud to be a part of it.

Considering the incredibly wide range of styles adopted by Piero Umiliani during his career, it will come as no surprise for you to know that he also produced disco. At that time in Italy disco had still an exotic appeal and was considered apt to accompany a genre of movies that was at once erotic and comic. “Discomusic” is some sort of a white version of a sound that is inherently black, a unique record within Umiliani‘s discography. The track “Discomania” became popular as the closing theme of 90° Minuto, a famous Italian football TV show.

For the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions, Inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious South Side Chicago singer/song writer Larry Dixon.Larry's raw songs capture the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. They also perfectly illustrate Larry’s ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, transcended by his determination to write and produce music. With the support of his faithful musicians, Larry's success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through. This is the story of Larry Dixon, his label LAD Productions, Inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.Jerome Derradji is proud to reactivate Past Due Records - the boogie funk division of Still Music to release this fantastic archive – what many consider to be the Holy Grail - of Chicago Funk, Boogie and Soul.

First ever reissue of the only solo album from Indian percussionist Ramasandiran Somusundaram, a former member of BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE (post-GARYBALDY band of Bambi Fossati), MAYA and NEW TROLLS ATOMIC SYSTEM, pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies with digital download. Produced and played along with a large portion of New Trolls (the De Scalzi brothers, Gianni Belleno, and Giorgio Usai) SKINNY WOMAN is an absolute anomaly of an album, one that mixes hard-funk and rock with the incisive and extraordinarily rhythmic side of Indian music, all wrapped in an exploito feel. The A side is a funky party starting with the disco-funk-rock title track; but by the second track, "I Am Afraid of Loosing You", all takes a more experimental turn, with Clavinet, Hammond organ, lo-fi brass and a bizarre use of voices incredibly similar to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention; the Zappa references continue in the next song, "Everybody", which starts with a distorted bass riff in a GEORGE CLINTON style. Then you get to "Electronic Heart", a rhythmic bomb with a long insane flute solo (by the unmistakable Vittorio De Scalzi) in ROLAND KIRK / IAN ANDERSON style. The B side is more psychedelic and meditative, mixing Oriental tinges and American west coast in a very peaceful hindu atmosphere (in the extraordinary "Shanghai”). At the end is the bonus track “Contrabbando di fagioli” (Smuggling of beans) previously released only in a very rare single in 1973; a percussive orgy with flute.

This time again, he perfectly browse and defines the great energy and quality of this specific Disco/Funk scene at that time, both in the underground market, or through bigger labels. On one hand, tracks by Crystal, Jackie Esam, Ideku Dynasty or Marc Ashy, were produced by small artists and labels from the French Caribbean and African community and also filled with a raw spirit and some Tropical influences. On the other hand, tracks by Claude Morgan, Greg Smaha, Roots, or Black Bells Group, were released by major labels such as Phonogram, RCA, Derby, or Carrere, thanks to confirmed independent producers, acting not only in France, but also in Canada and the US.Today, Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice are very proud to unearth these 12 gems, with amongst them some very hard to find and almost unknown titles.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Nigeria Soul Fever is their first release to explore the vast wealth of Nigerian music recorded in the 1970s. The new album comes with introductory sleeve-notes by Bill Brewster (author of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life).Packed-full with Afro-Funk, Disco and Boogie all from Nigeria, this triple album/double CD set brings together a stunning collection of diverse West African sounds. Whilst a small handful of the artists featured (Joni Haastrup, Tee Mac, Christy Essien) have seen the light of day outside Africa, this is essentially a collection of killer tracks by an array of artists completely unknown outside of Nigeria. Artists such as Don Bruce & The Angels, Akin Richards & The Executives, Angela Starr, Jimmy Sherry & The Music Agents. It’s no surprise that these records are extremely rare and expensive to buy individually so this album will save you going broke trying to find them. These recordings were made at a time when Nigeria’s trade restrictions banned imported records. Whilst new musical trends (such as American soul, funk, disco etc) entered and influenced the country, the local music scene remained just that – local. Consequently, these recordings remain practically unknown to anyone outside of the country.

Peter Hunnigale aka Mr Honeyvibes was born in South London on December 12th, 1960. Peter Hunnigale was to develop into one of Britain's most formidable reggae ‘Lovers Rock’ artist of our time. It was clear at a tender age Peter's main interest was in music and being born of Jamaican parentage, he was exposed and influenced by music of West Indian culture. Untamed Love is an UFO in Peter Hunnigale’s career, recorded at Omega studio (London) and originally released on the Cosmic label in 1986. Some people have no words to describe it. You can call it brit-boogie, rare funk, sick jam, musical bomb, or god jam, whatever it’s a typical mid 80's tune with a rhythmic background sound that is captivating and memorable, thanks to heavyweight synth and awesome vocals. The original 12’’ vinyl record is still very hard to find and expensive nowadays. If you are about to discover this song, make sure you are sit down when you listen to it because this song will blow you down “hey girl I like the way you smile”. Growing up in Britain meant that Peter Hunnigale was also open to other genres of music and with seeing the popular acts of the day perform on television and hearing the songs on the radio Peter knew what he wanted to be. Peter is also a great musician and did live work with reggae legends such as The Chosen Few, The Pioneers, B.B. Seaton and many others, while earning the respect of their peers as a competent bassist and qualified engineer. He won a Best Newcomer award at the Celebrity Awards in 1987, and won Best British Reggae Album at the British Reggae Industry Awards the same year.

While being a rare Patrick Adams and Billy Nichols production, Mary Clark’s “Take Me I’m Yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated Disco tracks by contemporary Deejays. This borderline Gospel-Disco Gem has all the elements of a timeless Disco Cut; a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by Mary Clark.

Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from EgyptIn the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn’t heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s.Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band’s versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like “Sah” to psych rock like “Horreya” or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as “Edba Mn Gded”. I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn’t a strong compilation of the group’s songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Another stone cold NY club jam from the archives of the legendary SAM records label.'Feel alright' does exactly as the title suggests! Pure early 80's electronic Disco joy for packed, sweaty dance-floors. Not much is known about Komiko, an undercover studio outfit that featured guest vocals from Carol Williams, Tracey Weber & Vicky D and was produced by the criminally underrated Darryl Payne (who manned the boards for Sinnamon, Sharon Redd, Carol Williams, NV & many more) but it's okay, as this - their sole release, more than makes up for it! A true Boogie classic indeed 'Feel alright' was a huge club record that got spin from the Garage to the streets of London. If you're into that sparse, electronic and funky early 80's Boogie / electro Disco sound then you won't be disappointed with this one. A guaranteed floor-filler of the highest calibre! Reissued in conjunction with SAM records, New York City. Fully remastered with all original 1981 label artwork intact. File under - *Essential Disco*

L.A. Nights, their new EP on Hi & Fly is a new milestone in the band discography, setting it to a next level. The title track is a cover of the famous Yasuko Agawa’s track (itself based on Light of the world’s “London Town”) inspired by strong Zapp and West-Coast influences. Fat basslines, tight horn riffs and funky talkbox parts galore!“Break Droppin’” and “The Battle” are infectious medleys played by the band with an extended line-up including extra brass, strings and percussions. In “Breaks Droppin’”, you’ll find a carefully selected mix of cuts, ranging from the Hawaiian Hal Bradbury’s “You win, I Lose”, to Julius Brockington’s “This Feeling (Freedom)”, passing through CTI and other sampler friendly tracks.“The Battle” is a b-boy style up-tempo selection, mixing Latin influences with some classic battle cuts and evolving to a Disco finish, with a cover of the great Brothers’ break “Under the Skin”. It is 10’ long, the beats & percussions are heavy and the extended band is in top condition. It won’t let some rest to your feet for sure!Last but not least, it's also the comeback of Hi & Fly, a French diggers' reference since 2000. So, one reason more to have a listen… Enjoy!

Recorded in the USA, E Je Ka Jo is the only record released by Nigerian brother and sister act, Xtasy. It is also a stone cold, boogie classic and remains one of the most sought-after records of its type in the world. E Je Ka Jo means ‘Let’s Dance’ and in 1983, Roy and Stella Bruce were whisked away to LA to record their certifiable dancefloor classic. Their brother, entertainment mogul Ben Murray Bruce, owned the label and called in favours with the America’s finest session players, including songwriter Greg Wright and bass player Keni Burke. Wright produced the album and wrote all the songs. He’d worked with Diana Ross, Thelma Houston and Bobby Womack and added a slick international sheen to each track. The sound is smooth, sophisticated and sexy and one that would be welcomed on dance floors anywhere in the world. Strangely, E Je Ka Jo was only ever released in Nigeria. An international release was stymied, but that only served to cement the albums status as a modern soul boogie classic. Thirty years later, that injustice has finally been rectified. - Peter Moore, www.africanrevolutions.com

Second hand piss-takery aside, this late 70s slice of groove heavy Afro-funk regularly changes hands for a monkey, so your bank manager should be thanking those fine folk in Austria. Drawing on reggae, disco and funk, Mr Pino gets up, down and all the way around across six party starting, largely instrumental offerings. Any record which starts with a buoyant reggae-disco ode to Barry's favourite plant life ("Ganja") is gonna be dope (ahem!), but when we're then taken through a bordering on ludicrous Afro-funk rendition of Beethoven's 5th, you know we're in safely wasted hands. You could easily assume this discoid arrangement would be whack, but you'd be better served throwing some shapes to the buzzing Moogs, chiming keys and wild wah guitar which make this beast purr. Things straighten out for the full steam ahead funk of title track "Boogie Fever" before "Dance For Love" opens the flip with a weirdo reggae lilt. If you're looking for the best party of your life condensed into five and a half minutes, then you should probably cast an ear over "African Hustle", crack your knuckles and dive into air piano ecstasy. After that Moog-led madness, there's just enough time to spark one up to the Afrobeat-meets-reggae of "Shake Shake Shake" before the run out groove reminds you it's time to pick the kids up from school. Killer!

Robo Arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from Nigeria's Ogun State. A founding member of Pogo Ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on Sexy Thing too. One listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart lay. Especially when he gets to slap it. The slapping starts early on 'Konastone Ponk', a dippy, funky track where Robo implores that if his music 'touches your soul, get up and dance.' The interplay between bass and guitar is magic – it's clear that Eno Louis is Nile Rodgers to Robo's Rick James, with a bit of Prince and Parliament thrown in for good measure. The funk feels dark and dangerous on 'Girls Reservation' and gets seriously slinky on 'Sexy Thing'. I can't over emphasis what a truly great album this is. The sound is clean and the production is stripped back and funky, a sound Robo would finesse as a producer with his Robbosoneex Music Company in Benin. Listen to the audacious cover of 'Get Up, Stand Up', and tell me that you're not convinced that very Bob Marley songs needs a slap bass break in the middle. You need this record in your life. - Peter Moore

Love to unearth Disco's more soulful jewels but don't have the time or money to dedicate yourself to the mouse-clickbattles between pasty-faced collectors on e-bay Disco-nut producer Joey Negro and fellow crafty crate-digger Sean P came to the rescue in 2005 with the first of their great value Soul of Disco albums that was rammed to the rafters with classic, rare, hard to find gems from the era that brought us fantastic music and sparkly platforms. Now, more than 10 years later the album finally sees a gatefold double vinyl release featuring 10 of the best tracks from Vol.1 of the series. So rare and highly sought after are many of these tracks by Disco connoisseurs that the original 12's of this album would likely cost you several thousand pounds, if you were lucky enough to find them in the first place. This collection spans the years 1976-'82, with an R&B slant and more song-based material; and is intended to show that there were a few more sides (many more to come, of course) to one of the last century's biggest musical phenomena. Some of the tracks included appear in Exclusive DJ Friendly Re-edits courtesy of Joey Negro himself. In a compilation brimming over with accessible earthiness, rawness and downright soulfulness, Joey and Sean continue their mission to help us understand how disco's influence is still shaping music 30 years after it broke into the mainstream.

The cover tells you everything you need to know about this stomping double-sider. It’s as white as Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever suit with the band’s name emblazoned in gold across the front. We’re talking early 80’s sophistication here, with a killer groove designed to let you show off all your moves and still look as classy as hell. By the late 70s and early 80s, disco was king in Nigeria and BLO were under pressure to follow the trend. Typically, they did it their own way, with slinky bass lines, Nile Rodgers guitar licks and a beat guaranteed to make you move. The Afrobeat and psyche rock stylings were gone, but the tightness and funkiness that comes from laying down rock hard grooves for over a decade remains. Long out of circulation, with copies going for silly money on Discogs, this killer 12” is back through PMG. You know what to do. Soul Jazz Records’ are releasing Tee Mac’s ‘Night Illusion’, a lost classic Nigerian Afro soul meets disco boogie funk album originally released in Nigeria in 1980 as a private-press release of 1000 copies on the enigmatic artists’ own label.Impossibly hard to find, the record remains practically unknown outside of Nigeria. Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger and features on Soul Jazz Records’ recent collection Nigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk Disco and Boogie alongside Joni Haastrup, Christy Essien and others, as well as on a recent compilation ‘Nepa Oh Nepa’ (released on Hot Casa earlier this year). The timelessness of this soulful, ground-breaking funk jazz lost masterpiece ‘Night Illusion’ leads to comparisons with James Mason’s legendary lost classic album Rhythm of Life, with his unique individualism and intensity hinting at the boogie funk of groups such as Mass Production and Slave so loved by artists such as Moodyman and Theo Parrish. While Fela Kuti isnow a cultural icon of Nigerian music throughout the world, the recent crossover success of William Onyeabor shows just how much undiscovered Nigerian music remains waiting to be explored outside of the country.Tee Mac was born in Lagos, the son of a Nigerian princess and a Swiss diplomat. He picked up the flute at age 7 and ten years later was studying classical musical in Switzerland under his uncle the composer J.J. Direndirger. Returning to Lagos, Nigeria in 1970 heformed the heavyweight afro rock group Tee Mac and Afro Collection (which included Johnny Haastrup on keyboards and The Lijadu Sisters on vocals). This band was famously joined by the legendary Cream drummer GingerBaker who came to Nigeria to play with them in 1971 (captured in the film Ginger Baker in Africa). At age 24, Tee Mac moved to Germany where he co-wrote and recorded the European disco group Silver Convention (whose ‘Fly Robin Fly’ became number one in the USA charts). This enabled him to return to Nigeria where he formed his own label SKJRecords to release his self-financed album Night Illusion, as well as buying two nightclubs and also investing in a number of mineral mining companies!Tee Mac continues to live in Lagos today and travels the world as a composer – one of whose pieces is The City of Mer Kailash (2009), a two-hour ballet featuring over 60 dancers and a 100+ piece orchestra.

Claude Rodap's “Syn-Ka” sums it all up. The LP comes with an insert in French, English and Japanese.

Sun, Skyy, Earth Wind & Fire...; Brooklyn-based IGBO (Indigo Green Brown Orange) reflect an elemental foundation of classic '70s and '80s funk and soul through a prism of hip arrangements and decidedly modern production befitting the diverse set of talented stage performers and composers they are. A sun-drenched celebration of life and musical positivity, their sonic palette evokes the same brilliant and playful colors as their name, the two songs presented here (on 45 for the first time) bursting with irresistible charm. It's a breath of uplifting fresh air in today's hyper-serious club landscape.

Music From Memory hit it just right yet again- this time it's Richenel from the Netherlands who's lost tracks get the dusting off. 6 tracks of funkified lo fi bliss.. TIP!MFM is proud to announce the first Dutch artist on Music From Memory and our first release of 2017. MFM017 will be a six track EP from Richenel. Richenel’s first album ‘La Diferencia’ was released on the obscure Dutch cassette label Fetisj in 1982. Recorded amongst the turmoiled punk and squatter scene of Amsterdam by musicians who had all connected through the Rietveld art academy, the ‘La Diferencia’ sessions reflect a unique mix of punk aesthetics with a synthesized ‘bedroom’ funkiness. Following on from this obscure release, Richenel would go on to record a number of successful albums and hit singles in the Netherlands and beyond. The six track EP holds a selection of tracks from the original cassette as well as alternative versions and two previously unreleased songs. More Fetisj news to follow.

In May 1976 a record was released that would have an unforeseen and lasting impact on the music industry “Ten Percent” by Double Exposure was an early release on the New York independent label Salsoul Records. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like “Salsoul Hustle,” “Tangerine” and “You’re Just The Right Size” by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International Records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved. So what was so special about this particular single then? Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, “Ten Percent” just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public – the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets.In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before.Or so we thought…The Men In The Glass Booth compiled by Al Kent tells the full story. Featuring ground breaking re-edits and remixes by some of the Disco era’s most influential DJs including Walter Gibbons, Bobby DJ Guttadaro, Tom Savarese, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott and John Luongo.Includes a 40 page booklet.

A seventh release on the Sunshine Sound label arrives and is likely to prove as irresistible as the previous tracks from acetates of some of disco's finest acts. Three previously unreleased gems from the source, only ever pressed to limited acetate during the early 70s to mid-80s and never released as these versions. This time Mr Mendel, Rob Manga & Illco from I Love Vinyl Amsterdam had the honour to rework these previously unreleased jewels.Side A starts with an edit by Rob Manga which will drive you onto the dance floor in 5th gear, with an infectious repetitive groove. “What about love!?”Followed by “Peace of Mind”, an edit of “After Hours”. Though there's no information to be found about the group, the song itself is a mixture between modern soul, funk and disco. Slightly re-arranged and spiced up by Illco.Side B is a slowly evolving disco epos with big instrumentation and a pinch of glamour. Edited by Mr Mendel and fittingly titled “Dr DJ”.The amazing artwork was created by SIT from Amsterdam. SIT demonstrates artificial characters, human beings and animals that remind us of the banality of everyday life, of our obsession with appearance, look and materialism. These characters are the victims of our visual and fast society, the technology of the visible – where human vanity stands in the way of a truly ethical life.

Otherworldly Caribbean electronic dance floor cuts! Arousing Prog-Zouk and abstract futurism from the French West Indies by synthesist Claude Rodap, released on vinyl for the first time. In the early eighties, a time where French Caribbean musicians were searching for their own sound, Claude Rodap mixed traditional Gwo-Ka, Bel Air, Biguine with synthetic sounds, resulting in magical, adventurous outcome. Recorded in the nineties and in 2000, the dreamy, sensuous three tracks on “Beletronic” are the deliberate result of more than a decade of his experimentation.

There's a new (or old?) family of funk in town and their history is kind of a mystery. Rumor has it The Le'Trells came close, but never were able to secure a record deal in their time. Curious and unable to locate any master tapes, it took a younger generation of Le'Trell boys to breath life back into the grooves and deliver an modern update to that which never was. “ON THE ONE” is sure to be a “Modern Funk Anthem”, certified floor filler already making the rounds in Chicago, NYC, Detroit and LA with a moody sax filled B Side that hits just as hard in the club as it does in the whip! Here's to hoping the Le'Trell boys prayers are finally answered! Out late October on STAR CREATURE.

Fulgeance & DJ Scientist are back with more dope material from their beat laboratory. Last year's debut album 'The Soviet Tape' featured their beat-fuelled take on funk, soul and jazz grooves. For the first release on the newly-established Excursions imprint, 'A Soviet Disco Excursion' follows up with three amazing edits strictly for the dancefloor.Fulgeance takes on CharaunÑ?tsy (Sorceress), a relatively unknown female band from Belorussia transforming it into a low slung, pure soulful disco flute funk groove that is a guaranteed DJ sureshot. Latvian singer Mirdza Zivere is next with an edit of her classic cosmic disco track "Vienmer but" - a track made famous by the group Modo.On side B, Scientist edited/remixed Tatyana Kochergina's "Igray, Skripka, Igray (Play Violin Play)" which delivers some Philly and Italo disco flavours - belying it's Soviet-era Ukraine roots to devastating dancefloor effect! This vinyl only release is the first in a series of edits from the London based label.

Few years before the international hit “Uptown Top Ranking”, made with his friend Donna, Althea Forrest recorded “Hey Mister” for famous producer (and singer) Derrick Harriott. Mid 1970's, Derrick Harriott is the best reggae-soul producer in Jamaica. He's made tons of US soul cover with Jamaican artists. “Hey Mister” was recorded at Federal studios (Tuff Gong nowadays) and didn't get an international audience, not even in Jamaica, probably because it was not a cover! For the first time since 1976, “Hey Mister” is now available on a Maxi vinyl 12'' to offer the best sound quality. Thanks to Derrick Harriott's master tapes and to the original artwork, now you can play this tune in the perfect condition.

One of the most powerful Disco Cuts in the P&P Affiliate “Land of Hits” Label, New York’s Movin’ is faithful to the name. A seven-plus minute Disco Gem of percussive breakdowns, a solid bass groove, classic strings, and enough guitar licks to make Nile Rodgers a little jealous. Released in 1981, Ahzz was a studio project by Osborne Hunter and Steve Boston who's better known for his work with Kenny Lehman on Roundtree and Lemon. Despite the Backlash of Comiskey Park’s Disco Demolition in 1979 and the commercialization of Disco, it was clear New York City was Still Movin’ in '81. Underground hits like these were just undeniable. Like a lot of the titles on Peter Brown’s labels, today New York’ Movin’ is a rare and highly sought after record. A holy grail for many. Go Ahead, check Discogs then thank the Disco Gods for this re-issue. Let’s Keep on Movin’.
