Born in a cave in Bordeaux, Radiante Pourpre is one of the many children of Simple Music Experience, a collective and label floating somewherebetween Marseille, Paris and Bordeaux and which inexorably attracted to itself many outsider experimentalists from the French electronic scene for the past few years. Antinote is now reissuing a long out-of-print tape that the duo recorded in 2014 in Brussels’ art space Komplot..Alex & Léopold, the two halves of Radiante Pourpre, learned in some smoky basement how to give life to their own desolated mental landscapes - only populated by the ghostly figures of the likes of Muslimgauze and Genesis P-Orridge - and to merrily loose themselves into them during long sessions surrounded by Korg synths and cassette players. Ghostly, their music is indeed: by suffering the many manipulations that the two are applying to their huge collection of samples, these fragments of sonic material, little by little, loose their consistency to become nothing more than a faint reminder of their previous life, a dilapidated version of their past-self.Manipulating the very essence of the sounds sampled, the duo is lurking on dub as well as industrial or musique concrète. By their multiple tape manipulations the two musicians reshape our world’s map, as the whim takes them, fostering the most improbable meetings: faint synths crash themselves against a solid wall of Irakian percussions while Brazilian voices melt into field recordings of fearsome machineries.

Heinali And Matt Finney are a transcontinental avant-garde electronic music project consisting of Ukranian composer Oleg Shpudeiko (Heinali) and Alabama-based spoken word poet Matt Finney. Their new album (their first for The Flenser) sees the duo return with their first release since 2011. Like their prior collaborations, Heinali provides a lush, foreboding soundtrack to Matt Finney’s bleak narrations, but How We Lived demonstrates a more considered approach. The result is four long tracks which are denser and more cogent than anything they’ve released in the past. Finney provides his most intimate and harrowing words to date, evoking the type of anguish and enmity that only someone who has probed the depths of despair can. The duo first met in 2010 and immediately began collaborating, establishing a prolific working relationship and releasing a series of albums and EPs over the next two years. After the release of 2011’s Ain’t No Night, Finney, after a series of personal tragedies, gave up writing and human contact entirely, withdrawing for two years as far away from society as he could get. Eventually, his head cleared and he realized how much his work with Heinali had helped him deal with life’s seemingly endless disappointments, and he emerged from his self-imposed exile eager to feel that catharsis again. The duo reconnected and began collaborating on new material. This album is the result of those missing years.

Multi Culti's lucid-lifestyle dreamer Peter Power takes us on a free-wheeling trip to the motherland on AFRO DAMBA.The Irish-born Voodoohop resident has returned from the jungles of Bahia with a fresh ep of primal party tracks sampling voices and rhythms from across Africa and it's neighbouring islands, producing what is easily his most club-oriented work to date.Whereas his tracks for Voodoohop were spiritual flute-heart-openers, these are neo-pagan mating-ritual floor-fillers. The rhythm is set to tribal chug, with rollicking percussion, reverb-soaked vocals, and all the fun jangly bells & bits you expect to be hanging off such a well-traveled producer. If that weren't enough, we enlisted Romanian-dance-duo Khidja to rework Adama Waro Resident mix-lord Dreems also weighs in with a subtle remix of Dansakoni, gently upping the tempo and tweaking the knobs in selfless service of the original groove.

Jean-Jacques Perrey has long been recognized as a pioneer of electronic music. Along with his musical partner at the time, Gershon Kingsley, the duo recorded a landmark album: The In Sound From Way Out, which was released by Vanguard Records in 1966. Perrey went on to record over 24 more albums of electronic music during his lifetime. But prior to this seminal electronic album Perrey already had an impressive career as an electronic music pioneer, having been the demo man for Georges Jenny's Ondioline, one of the very first proto-synthesizers.Musique Electronic du Cosmos actually predates The In Sound From Way Out. The exact date is unknown, but it was probably recorded around 1962-3. Only 500 copies of Musique Electronique du Cosmos were produced. Some of the songs from this album later turned up on television commercials, most notably the song “Chicken On The Rocks”, which was used in a television commercial by the Ideal Toy Company in the ‘60s.The tracks on side 2 of this reissue are from a very rare demonstration disc. Only one copy of this record is known to exist. It was purchased in an eBay auction by Spanish record collector and DJ, Raül G. Pratginestós (a.k.a. DJ Zero). As the hand-typed record label shows, the songs were originally transferred from tape to disc at A&R Recording, a studio owned and operated by New Yorkers Jack Arnold and Phil Ramone. (Ramone went on to become one of the most successful record producers of all time.) It is difficult to place a date as to when this acetate record was cut, but Perrey left New York in early 1971, so it would certainly have been from before that.Comes in a nice three backflapped sleeve with original artwork with a colour insert including photos and liner notes written by Dana Countryman in a limited edition of 500 copies only.

Hotly tipped by everyone from Jackmaster to Jamie Jones, Elliot is a superstar in the making, and relishes the opportunity to flex his more esoteric muscles with a slice of deconstructed electro that hints at the startling musical breadth, which the young producer is only beginning to reveal.Coming Round is remixed by none other the legendary Rex The Dog, who is not only an artist who Man Power has huge admiration for, but also someone he is pleased to call a good friend. The trust between the two artists shines through, as “Rex” provides possibly one of the most unfettered dancefloor tracks of his career.

Dust
LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Hyperdub)

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Laurel Halo returns to Hyperdub for her third LP with a fresh approach and a new sound. Routed out of the electronic abstraction of 2015’s In Situ - but with clear reference to 2012's sleeper-hit Quarantine - Dust is an album revolving around loose and languid songs; warped, sun-filled, melted and at times, heavy-hearted and obscure. Recorded over a period of two years, the writing process began at EMPAC in upstate New York in January 2015. With access to microphones, percussion, keys and a wide range of routings, Laurel spent days alone in the cavernous space, later inviting musicians Eli Keszler and Lafawndah to join her there. Those sessions would eventually become this album: a collection of breezy, broken songs, based on woody instrumentation, sub bass and restless, intricate electronics. Earnest songwriting meets with modal cut-up strategies, improvisational playing with higrade digital dust. Tactile and fibrous throughout the record, the vocals and percussion coalesce and breathe life into each other. Swung grooves eddy and collapse; acoustic drums are warped into sensual, febrile melodies. The lyrics are themselves bricolage, without a specific narrator or place in time. They slip in and out of view, something that is visualised in the album’s inner panel. Extending the influence, the album opener ‘Sun To Solar’ is an adaptation of 'Servidão de Passagem' by Brazilian concrete poet Haroldo de Campos. In line with the album’s sound, Dust is 'Laurel Halo' as a flexible cast of characters. Filled with dialogue, the album helms an interchangeable ensemble of vocalists and musicians, featuring vocals from Klein, Lafawndah, and Michael Salu, as well as musicians such as Eli Keszler, Craig Clouse ($hit and $hine), Julia Holter, Max D, Michael Beharie and Diamond Terrifier. Laurel’s omnivorous influences play out in mutated fashion - coalesced, unfettered and inclusive - a broad musical palette free from entrenched modes, catalysed by digital production that could only happen in 2017.

Maggi Payne's challenging electronic album 'Crystal' was first released in 1986 by Lovely Music, home to experimental musicians such as Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Lucier. On this work flute, spoken voice, sonifications and synthesizers are processed to create dense and massive structures. Silent sections gently evolve into flowing drones of complex resonances. Oozing drones evolve into dense and powerful peaks of short duration. The compositions and sounds on 'Crystal' have incredible depth, a profound logic and, though not "pretty", an irresistible beauty.

The new material is characterised by simplicity and a mixture of slightly perceptible sense of humour and musical eloquence. This minimalistic set-up consisting of a few selected synthesizers allows for a complete portrayal of both musicians' personalities. They perform vital, full of unexpected twists pieces based on simple riffs, always open to interpretation. Economical use of sounds in punk rock, raw minimalism of the street sounds and flexible riffs constitute the formula of the material of Mapa's album "No Automatu".

Last Scene Two years on from the release of his debut album called ‘Natureboy’, Dario Rojo Guerra, aka Natureboy Flako, is back with a new six-song EP on Five Easy Pieces. ‘Natureboy Flako’ is a self-titled collection of music culled from over 200 recording sessions since Guerra moved from London to Berlin in late 2015. It’s the first work that unites the artistic identity of Flako with that of the Natureboy persona at the heart of his debut album, and is the debut for a new artist name: Natureboy Flako. Moving away from the live instrumentation of his debut LP, ‘Natureboy Flako’ is the most electronic-sounding record he’s made, using old analogue equipment such as Korg’s MS-20, ARP Odyssey and Roland’s SH-2000 synthesisers, as well as new instruments such as Arturia’s MiniBrute. Where previous songs relied on overdubs, most of these songs were recorded in one take, with little overdubbing, making it his most live record to date. As with 2015’s album ‘Natureboy’, the six-song EP sees Guerra searching for musical balance. Both sides of the record offer contrasting energies, with the A-side featuring some of the heaviest tracks he’s made and the cinematic B-side made up of more reflective compositions. However, both sides are equally propulsive, with driving arpeggios forming the backbone of much of the EP.

Claude Speeed returns to Planet Mu with his second album 'Infinity Ultra'. He describes the record he's been creating since he started making computer music as one "conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age; and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response - a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future." 'Infinity Ultra' takes inspiration from sleep paralysis, monumental artworks, children's anime, abandoned places, ghostly rave pasts and terrifying silicon valley futures, and the limitless anger of the digital present. These influences have been channelled into an impressionistic burst of varied creativity: Shimmering VSTs; monolithic noise; euphoric blocks of colourful sound; trance stabs and the citrus rush of hardcore; towering drones, and skynet math rock - all rendered against cold, sinister space and nostalgic synth melodies. The album reveals the artist's Scottish roots, viewed at a hazy distance from his Berlin home - a series of memories of Glasgow's experimental psychedelic underground, its DIY rock scene and defiant club hedonism. These genre relationships are blurred and at times they contrast with audible brutality; the result is a hybrid, sculptured way of rendering music - minimal specifics, maximum emotions.

A foray through abandoned ruins and a reflection on the passing of time and the impermanence of all things physical. Outstanding in quality and production skills, this mesmerizing and foreboding journey is at times tranquil and melodic and also dives into more martial like percussive elements and industrial atmospheres. “Merzbow is erotic like a car crash can be related to genital intercourse.” (from an interview with Masami Akita). Somewhere in between dadaism and surrealism, Merzbow’s work is a sum of all his influences and also a sublimation of his life experiences, all which pervade the different layers of his tracks. Improvisation and composition lose their meaning, as Masami’s work goes beyond and finds its meaning in accidents, disruptions and experimentation. His music gives freedom to the listener and to a certain extent, invites to meditation. Whenever I think of Merzbow’s catalogue, I see it as this complex collage of singular moments across time when he got influenced by a particular object or person or idea, and transposed those into noise. And Torus EP is that particular instance, the encounter between Japan and Serbia, between Masami Akita and Jezgro, with the result being 4 sinister and unsettling tracks, visceral and at the same time heart-rending.

For its fourth release under its main series, Quanta Records welcomes Panorama Island, Zwei Kreise’s new album, mixing ambient, IDM and sonic experimentations. With Panorama Island, Zwei Kreise delivers one of his most accomplished work so far, inspired by memory and more precisely its flaws: hidden corners, lost knowledge or elliptic recollections. Melancholic ambient tracks and deconstructed breaks come one after the other and set the mood of the person who dives in. Melodies play a very important role in these introspections: meticulously planned, sharp or languishing, they guide the listener through his wandering. In this record, Zwei Kreise shows his obsession for detail and micro-variations under a new light, more ethereal and contemplative, renewing our perceptions with every listening.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Space, Energy and Light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla D-I-Y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. All of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world. From computer software and hardware experimentalists and sound pioneers such as Laurie Spiegel and Kevin Braheny, as well as Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company – the first synthesizer ensemble created in collaboration with Robert Moog – through to the earliest musique concrète experimentation of Tod Dockstader, the album shows how technological advancements and creative artistic expression went hand in hand. In the mid-1970s artists Steven Halpern and Iaxos were instrumental in creating proto-new age music, experimenting in both the healing properties of sound and its relationship with the natural world. These artists also pioneered a new self-contained and underground D-I-Y approach to music, creating their own record labels, forming new distribution networks (with albums sold in meditation centres, health food stores and ashrams) far away from the commercialism of the mainstream music industry. In the early 1980s after the revolution of punk, these D-I-Y attitudes and ideas appeared once more in the growth of the distinctly anti-commercial and underground cassette-only careers of artists such as Germany’s Stratis and Carl Matthews in Britain.

Different Circles ringleaders, Mumdance & Logos, load up their first joint plate since the seminal Proto [2015] LP with two super wide, grittily spacious and HD hybrids of grime, techno and sci-fi sound design for their highly collectible series. Proceeding the label’s sought-after shots from Rabit, Airhead, and two volumes of the Weightless compilation featuring Inkke, Dark0, Murlo, and the pair's own gem, Café Del Mar; this new 12" catches them carving out a quintessentially UK rave sound for 2017 from a bank of modular kit and software plugins. On the A-side, FFS they feel to warp the club with head-compressing subbass hits and pinched claps wrapped in a slow-strobing, stop-start derangement punctuated by nutty vocals and convulsive modem noise. It’s as close as they’ve come to turning the club into a faulty anti-gravity chamber and sends dancers reeling every time. The B-side’s BMT explores a skizzier, belligerent sound. Rolling from elusive location recordings to stuttering flashcore kicks and a flush of plasmic bell tones shredded up with combustible digital distortion, they toe a fine line between panic and dread, and a more stush, shark-eyed sort of resolution, preferring to re-calibrate and translate their influences from classic tech-step, grime and cinematic sound design, rather than merely imitate them. The result is a proper rave girder that stands out miles from the crowd.

Lee Gamble’s UIQ welcomes Sim Hutchins to the hyperprism with Vantablank Stare, an insightful A/V project born from a personal discontent with the vacuous repetition of 24 hour rolling news coverage, and presenting a critical response to, in his own words; “the daily bombardment of news items on corruption and our societal inclination to be ‘in the know’ about current affairs”. Aesthetically, the EP’s three tracks of roiling post-junglism and fractured dub techno tessellations most acutely recall the tumbling designs of N1L and Lanark Artefax 12”s but, its conceptual drive is closer to Sam Kidel’s Disruptive Muzak in the way it extracts from current socio-political issues ubiquitous to nearly all our lives, and especially for anyone living in the UK right now. The dissection of its subject is most literal in the accompanying video, presenting stark, stock CGI representations of those coldly contemporary news studios that we’ve all seen too much of in recent times, with accompanying banners ribboning fake “statements” and “breaking news” that, on first glance, are almost indistinguishable from the ‘real’ thing, yet coolly subvert the text to their own end, exposing its function as a tool for public control. However, the music is less literal and more elusive, abstract and metaphorical, using samples of radio waves, covert signals and intercepted E-Comms as the raw material for an impressionistic tussle of invisible forces, translating as head-stretching recursive phase shifts and disembodied jungle structures in Some Men (you) Just Want to Watch the World Burn and as an allegory for passive, anxious textural attrition in Nescience Is Not Ignorance on the A-side, whilst the B-side unfurls a knottier tract of warped, quicksilver dub techno with Some Men (me) Just Want to Let the World Burn, which, you’ll notice, contrasts with the title of the A-side, and lays bare the artist’s paradoxical dilemma; highlighting the difference between disrupting the system and sitting back and waiting for its inevitable demise.

Stephen O’Malley deploys the 2nd in a trio of documents of his improvisational prowess following his crushing Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs, which was brought forward in tribute to the Paris attacks and released in late 2015.The minimalist electric guitar mantra Dread Live was performed at Studio Helmbreker in Haarlem, Netherlands, September 2013, and recorded by Mathijs Ton on a hypercardiod ribbon mic with immaculate 70’s valve amp back line and technical support by the great Tos Nieuwenhuisen. The set was programmed as part of the opening of the Dread - Fear in the age of technological Acceleration exhibition at De Hallen Haarlem, curated by Juha Van’t Zelfde. It renders 40 minutes of Sunn 0)))’s O’Malley at his most depressive and heavy and is something akin to a slow-motion baptism by waves of tarry, blackened harmonic distortion, holding us under ’til we nearly pass-out from its sinking pressure. Needless to say - it’s insanely good. How low can you go? O’Malley knows.

Swedish noise agitator Dan Johannsson bothers his good pals at iDEAL with a brilliant new LP following his Aska split album with Puce Mary in 2013. Malign by nature and intent, his overdue return to Joachim Nordwall’s label is a sorely strung out and decayed thing, a dank space hankering to be inhabited by listeners who want or need to be pushed into uncomfortable headspaces. If you're into anything from Jandek to Wolf Eyes to The Caretaker - this one's for you.Malign trades in a sense of depression and negativity that draws strength from the vacuum behind hope, vacillating forlorn, Loren Connors-like guitar melodies and rubbled shellac samples that recall The Caretaker with passages of fierce distortion and slurried atmospheric textures that project hellish images of waterboarding and abject terror on the mind. The guitar pieces are almost Jandek-like in their awkwardness, often morphing mid sentence into the kind of shuddering knots that Aaron Dilloway would be proud of, steadily toeing away hope in favour of full depressive immersion and feelings from the brink.Ultimately, though, the record wouldn’t be so convincing without its severe sense of sincerity, honestly conveying that pall of darkness without any ironic distance. It’s a proper downer in the best way.

Finders Keepers and Demdike Stare’s treasure trove side imprint returns with its first vinyl death rattle of 2017; a staggering side of ‘entrances to hell’ -like atonal wormholes and pure sonic panic from Bruce Ditmas. If you copped the two Ditmas reissues on Finders Keepers a few years ago, then good for you. But this one sounds eff all like them, and uncannily much closer to, say, Reinhold Friedl's electro-acoustic terrors or even the deconstructed club music and dissonant vocabulary of Chino Amobi or Helm. Trust this one is a proper rotten peach! With roots in the early developments of modular synthesis and free jazz and revered amongst the most discerning collectors of electronic music and American avant-garde, experimental drummer Bruce Ditmas occupies a firm branch on contemporary experimental music’s family tree. As the one time romantic partner (and artistic collaborator) of sound poet Joan La Barbara (later to be Miss Morton Subotnik) and the stand out session drummer for both Robert Mason’s mutant synth Stardrive project and Gil Evan’s legendary Jimi Hendrix tribute band, Ditmas is best savoured as the first recorded solo artist to utilise Robert Moog’s lesser-known Moog Drum controller – an instrument which over the course of two 1977 independent LPs (Aeray Dust and Yellow) would become synonymous with his blooming reputation.Raised in Miami, nurtured in New York City and willingly exploited internationally, Bruce’s public life as a child prodigy-cum-world jazz crusader (drawing similarities with the likes of France’s Jacques Thollot) has seen him spread his select discography over many imprints, including Joan La Barbara’s own Wizard Label, Enja and ECM – socialising with sound designers like Suzanne Ciani and collaborating on projects penned by Annette Peacock, Paul Bley and his long running collaborator Enrico Rava. Spending the last thirty years travelling between America and Italy as a full-time jazz musician whilst working with inter-communal music initiatives, film directors and theatre groups, Bruce has retained the same maverick passion and macabre creative influences channeling brutalism, futurism, science fiction and psychological horror through his percussive mantra and avant-garde approach to instrument manipulation and recontextualisation. These selected archival pieces are extracted from various recordings made over the last three decades comprising field recording techniques and percussive manipulation resulting in gritty tonal soundscapes and angular sonic sculptures while drawing theoretical comparisons with European proto-industrial units like Germany’s Faust, Swiss electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri, Czech sonic illustrator Milan Grygar and sprawling generation of Parisian musique concrète informed anti-melodic luminaries. Reflecting a lifelong career in active melodic drum exploration and vivid existential sound design, this record provides an alternative, darker, meditative, glimpse into the work of a proactive composer at his non-conformist best in the uninhibited confides of his own home analog studio.

For the first time since 2009, the third and final part of Leyland Kirby’s hauntological masterpiece Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was is available on vinyl again. The synthetic lustre of Memories Live Longer Than Dreams already appeared deliciously cracked and damaged the first time around, and in 2017 its phosphorescent glow remains a beacon of shelter for contemplation and secluded mind-drift, offering a surreal, nostalgic night-light to the gloomy and confused world it diagnosed and predicted nearly ten years ago. Written during James Leyland Kirby’s forlorn purgatorial years spent in Berlin during the period which shaped the modern world as we know it - a time when global financial institutions collapsed, YouTube’s all-encompassing archive was beginning to spill over, and Facebook and Twitter were starting to enmesh the entire planet - this final instalment finds Kirby channelling osmotically absorbed visions of the future, as spelt out by Vangelis, Lynch & Badalamenti, Eno and Kirby’s own The Caretekar alter ego, into a waking dream sequence of quietly anguished sound poems for the contemporary echo chamber, relinquishing a traversal of the hive mind’s private fears and shared nightmares rendered in ghostly scrolls of synth noise and sweepingly emotive cinematic gestures. It effectively diagnoses a sort of cultural malaise that was perhaps embryonic in 2009, as the golden age of dance/pop form and optimism which resulted in radical acts such as V/Vm and the Ccru was now left shimmering in the rearview, with the momentous energy of its accumulated, independent scenes being diffused into institutions or calcifying into hyper commercialism;- leaving little or no room for ambiguity, irony or subversively socialist thought within its increasingly binary wake; a wake which has now bifurcated into extreme left and right-leaning politics with a gulf of misunderstanding in between.Keening and reeling away his own thoughts on the matter in that interzone of negative space, Kirby draws on ever tightening coils of cultural feedback loops and the infidelity of memory to parse, process and secrete a slow, plasmic ooze of melancholic musical form that perhaps best represents the feelings of our age; of our shared future occluded by an inglorious or illusive past that promised much, yet never paid up.

Riccardo Sinigaglia, with Gabin Dabiré and Walter Maioli, made up one third of Futuro Antico - one of the most important collaborations to emerge from the 1970’s and 80’s Italian avant-garde. The project, whose name literally translates to ancient future, joined traditional sounds and instrumental from around world, with electronic music - the sonic past, present, and future as one. Recorded shortly after the collective’s most prolific period and released in 1986, while more singular and more idiosyncratic, Sinigaglia’s Riflessi caries these very concerns at its core. Built from field recording, collaged samples, synthesis, and instrumentation - shifting from hypnotic rhythm to radical and displacing structures, it establishes a remarkable link between ancient and non-western musics and efforts emerging from studios like Groupe de Recherches Musicales. A work of staggering rhythm, texture, beauty, Riflessi builds a world with almost no parallel - imbuing electronic music with touch, tactility, and humanity, while sacrificing none its challenges and intellectual heights. Rattling sonorous wonder, emerging for the first time on any format since its original pressing, before us is a historic moment - a lost piece of the puzzle of the wondrous Italian avant-garde.

"The Loa of Music" is the debut recording project of Milanese composer and musician Roberto Musci inspired by Voodoo Religion; Vever (the magical voodoo paintings) and Loas, the dark and magic spirits. The deep charm of non-Western music has led him to travel for many years across Africa, India and Asia, studying rhythms, scales, performance and interpretation of the most varied traditional and indigenous music, as well he make many field recordings and collected ethnic instruments that would then be combined with synthesizers and electronics in The Loa of Music.Recorded in 1983, the project originally had 80 minutes of music but only half was released on original LP. SOAVE has pressed for the first time the Complete Recording Session from original tapes of this phenomenally ambitious masterpiece that entirely refuses the well trod path - distilling a remarkable range of sonic reference and reality. A work of field recording, musique concrète, electronics, synthesis, and instrumentation, pulling from countless musics from across the globe, the result is nothing short of brilliant and stunningly beautiful. A near perfect work - an egoless gesture, which rather than attempting to find consensus, offers every voice equity and cohabitation - harnessing the history music, with all of its cultural diversity, as a vision for a more ideal future. Geographies and their sounds intertwine, while Musci’s interventions and instrumentation thread a path. Ambiences ripple, sounds and voices converse in a vision of unity that may only exist within sonic realms. Unquestionably seminal, and one of the most important works to emerge from Italy in the last 50 years. Never before issued on vinyl since it’s original release, and surely not to be around for long, this is one not to miss.

Transgressive Records release Bruise Blood: Reimagining Steve Reich's ‘Music for Pieces of Wood’, a collaboration between Polica, an electronic pop band based in Minneapolis, and s t a r g a z e, a Berlin-based chamber orchestra interested in pop and electronics. The release sees them reinterpret Steve Reich’s 1973 composition Music For Pieces Of Wood. The first of a pair of records from this collaboration, this release sees them take minimalist pioneer Steve Reich’s Music For Pieces of Wood corrupting its polyrhythms across a continuous twenty minutes of music, pushing the boundaries of both artists in a truly engrossing and transportative collaboration. The second release in the series, to follow in September on Transgressive Records, is a more song-based album, containing new material and inspired versions of unexpected pop songs, turned inside out to expose their essence. s t a r g a z e is an ever-evolving project, marrying modern composition with alternative attitudes and sounds. Transgressive Records started working with André de Ridder, co-founder of s t a r g a z e, on his arrangement of Terry Riley’s In C Mali with Africa Express – a project that sets the precedent for this new release with its radical, yet perhaps definitive, performance of a minimalist classic. The first official s t a r g a z e release on Transgressive was a pioneering re-interpretation of the music of the alternative experimentalists Deerhoof Deerhoof Chamber Variations which led to the fulsome, and controversial takeover of the BBC Proms for the David Bowie night, which saw s t a r g a z e collaborate with artists as diverse of John Cale, Elf Kid, Mark Almond and Anna Calvi amongst others to celebrate the astounding, at times contradictory, music of this soulful, inspirational polymath. Poliça have themselves blazed a trail across the modern musical landscape – across their three albums of dark, personally political pop they have distorted the conventions of production and form to create deeply affecting songs that claw into your consciousness.

Welcome to the parallel musical universe of Miss Maria Teresa Luciani, a landscape of sonic architecture and theoretical composition constructed by a family of engineers that reinvented the wheel before the vehicle even began the journey. Imagine, if you will, the musical equivalent of Peter Cook’s Archigram group or the soundtrack to Charles and Ray Eames’ private sketchbooks, hinting at a new municipal, utopian metropolis just hours before the blueprints are suspiciously misplaced by the courier and mainstream pop building regulations piss on our asbestos bonfire. These 1972 constructions of progressive, cyclic, proto-industrial colour music were never intended for public habitation. These are the Sounds Of The City in a galaxy far, far beneath our radar and above your expectations that was never built. Pseudo-futurist pop music? Cubic folk? Tape-op-art? Sì, grazie! Before the needle hits the first groove, the story of Maria Teresa Luciani reads like an Alphaville caper full of foreign intrigue, low intensity identification fraud, secret codes, family bonds, mistrust and wanderlust... Naturally, you are holding a genuineFinders Keepers article. To say this rare Italian concept album is “unbelievable” is justified on multiple levels. This multi-storey storage facility of found sounds, radiophonic samples, tape loops, early electronic music experiments, mechanicalfolk, cinematic vision, sound design, educated music theory, political pop and high concept art-as-noise successfully layers more musical ideas within its unique structure than one would think possible for a solo artist within any musical genre. This is why Sounds Of The City presents us with a brand new genre defying compositional framework, pre-dating sampling culture, cut ‘n’ paste plunderism and industrial music in the process. Pre-digital, indefinable and genuinelyunbelievable. But who is Maria Teresa Luciani? On hearing this record respected collectors and enthusiasts have suggested “the female answer to Basil Kirchin,” or “the Italian Daphne Oram”. Both with justified cause. Mystery, myth, legend, teacher, artist, inventor, author, musician, psychologist, daughter, and (possibly most importantly) sister.

Isolation Diaries is Argentinian producer Alejandro Mosso's 2nd album. It comes more than ten years after his debut, Hiperborea in 2005. He says "I think the album is warm, emotive and nostalgic but not dark nor sad. It is percussive and melodic but not laid back and Balearic. It is tribal and organic but still very precise", as only electronic music can be. The grooves are strong and infectious and the sounds are rich and satisfying, resulting in music that sounds very organic and unpremeditated. The album is accompanied by a Burnt Freidman remix of the track Isolation Diaries, and a Ricardo Villalobos remix of Deardrum.

Before coming back in September for a new year of new releases, LDDLM gives you their current mood and state of affairs in the form of a sampler 12" GRIEVE NOT, BUT TRY AGAIN.Luke Abbot's mix of EASTER's "Champagne" has been in our drawers since the very early days of the label but still shines as new. No dust gathered. Easter's "synth pop" is turned into a slow, yet nor chugging, futuristic r n'b number. This is our conception of sunrise music.TOM OF ENGLAND grasps the metallic fury of Mutado Pintado's classic "Lazy boy" and chops it in a grinder. Decomposition / re-composition with of high industrial standard.A SCENE FROM A FUTURE, a from-a-lost-tape edit by our underbuy MANFREDAS has been one of our biggest club tracks for the last year. Check his recent Boiler Room ending to know how warped yet strangely hit-like it is.Finally, COWBOY RHYTHMBOX decided of their own accord to do a club edit of GOLDEN BUG's "Physical Disco". We liked it, we release it. Simple and effective. Jugular attack.

Nyako' is our 7th vinyl release here at OtC and it's a big one. South African producer 'Behr' created 'Nyako' together with Makadem during a Santuri Safari session at Sondeka Festival in Kenya. The E.P is 4 cuts that build in brilliance from the original which has extremely broad appeal. Indian producer 'Daisho' delivers a straight ahead 4 x 4 house groover, south-London production duo Modified Man swing their analogue machines into action for a heady synth adventure, which is just a bit broken. Berlin-based duo of Dirk Leyers and DJ Nomad (Hans Reuschl) are the ideal pairing to merge technology and tradition together as AFRICAINE808 bring up the rear with a balearic sensation to round off the EP. Makadem is a talented musician and vibrant performing artist from Kenya. He's a figurehead of the Benga scene in Nairobi. His stage presence and powerful vocal delivery, had him likened to the legendary Fela Kuti. Makadem innovates by bringing traditional African instrumentation, story telling and contemporary production methods together.

Acclaimed US DJ and producer Maceo Plex has announced the release of his long awaited studio album ‘Solar’. The climax to a lead up that included last year’s 7-track ‘Journey to Solar’, and 2015’s 2 track ‘Solar Sampler’, ‘Solar’ is due for release on his brand new label Lone Romantic on the 16th June. Lone Romantic is a new electronica based label; it will focus on albums and will also open its doors to releasing more avant guard and leftfield singles.Meanwhile, the ‘Solar’ album allows Maceo to utilise the long format to explore and expose his less explicitly club leaning and more reflective side, taking the listener on a journey through shades of electronica, techno, breakbeats, dub and more. Named after his son Solar, the album also chronicles his new found fatherhood; “the ups and downs in the first few years and its effects on life, marriage and more”. There’s still dancefloor suitable music within the album; opener ‘Sparks of Light’’s propulsive drums make for an attention grabbing first track, just as the driving 4/4 bassline of closing track ‘The Tesseract’ is a memorable climax. ’Polygon Pulse’ also features the hefty low end that Maceo has become known for, yet underneath breakbeat style drums and sighing vocal snippets.Vocals are a prominent defining feature of ‘Solar’ that mark it out as a departure towards more of a home listening, experimental album. ‘Indigo’ marries Maceo’s characteristic signature sounds with a slower tempo and gritty male vocals for a stirring, downbeat piece of indie electronica, whilst following track ‘Separation’s breathy vocals and subtle DnB cymbals feel more relaxed. ‘Kepler’s Journey’ marks a stylistic break midway through the album, before the vocoded vocals of ‘Solar Wind’ and ‘Wash Away My Tears’ (the 12” mix of which was included in the Solar Sampler) bring to mind a forward thinking, indie take on French touch. Elsewhere, the lilting, dub techno influenced ‘Swan Dive’ sees this effect take on a more eery, thoughtful tone. The release of ‘Solar’ sees Maceo Plex enter a new, more developed chapter of his long career - taking the sounds that have made him so popular and building upon them to push himself forward artistically, the album is a very personal use of the long format and an education in the producer’s musical influences.

Last track is also source material for Madteo's Cositas Ricas featured on Sex Tags Amfibia's AMFIBIA 15 LP compilation.

Goldie has always been larger than life, and his giant ambition took jungle from an underground concern to music that could sketch out cityscapes in epic widescreen. That ambition is undimmed on this 100-minute-plus solo album, his first in nine years. As well as sleek and well-heeled junglism, there’s trip-hop, piano-led lounge jazz, restless, Pharrell-ish funk on Castaway, and even, on Tu Viens Avec Moi?, pleasantly noodly Balearic soft rock.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Ekoplekz returns with his fourth album for Planet Mu, in the shape of 10-tracker "Bioprodukt". The unique lo-fi, woozy sound of Bristol's Nick Edwards stays intact while he veers towards the nineties for inspiration: the bleep and bass sound of the north of England is one touchpoint and the acid gurgles of the 303 are another. While the murky lo-fi production levels and evocative melodies remain, they are now bolstered by a more muscular rhythmic chassis. Snappier kicks and snares mingle with dense layers of percussion and deep undulating sub-basslines adding a funkier edge, as typified by opening track "Elevation" where playful beats interlock with breezy keyboard flourishes to create something uncharacteristically upbeat. Similarly, the gentle, fluid motion of "Slipstream" and "Calypzoid" represent some of the most appealingly chilled grooves in the Ekoplekz canon to date. But the darker-edged material remains. "Expedition" has a pensive, percussion-heavy feel whilst "Acrid Acid" is a dirt-encrusted slow-mo techno meltdown. "Transcience" displays the Ekoplekz trademark dub-fx in full flight over a driving lo-end, before "Descent" leads down to the final section, where the beats fade out, replaced by rippling layers of spectral ferric ambience on the epic "Low-X Over", before finishing with the radiant looped stasis of "Denier Daze". The albums shifting, imperfect patterns and muted colours are visually mirrored in the beautifully realised sleeve by the Print Project.

From Scratch was an innovative and highly influential New Zealand- based sound-performance group, making extensive use of found and re-purposed objects as well as custom-made instruments in their intricately interlocking percussion music. One of their signature instruments consisted of carefully tuned PVC pipes, played with foam rubber mallets, arrays of these feature prominently, along with drums and tuned percussion, in Gung Ho 1,2,3D, an extended composition which sumptuously investigates polyrhythmic relationships indicated by the number sequences which title each section of the piece. Featured here is the original 1982 recording of the "8, 9, 10" and "9, 10, 11" sections of the piece, previously issued in 1988 by Flying Nun. Rounding out this 2LP release are three 2016 translations of the piece, based on the original score. Japanese group goat provides a driving rhythmic and mathematical analogue, which From Scratch's Phil Dadson, who provides liner notes, describes as "a fast-moving shadow, familiar in outline but from another world". German producer Don't DJ imbibes the tribal spirit of Gung Ho and its sense of ritual to deliver a hypnotic immersion, and Utena Kobayashi Group adds wordless voice-worlds and distorted blasts to the ever-onward mix, before a final tropical down-shift.
