Out now for the first time on vinyl! The world first heard Pill on their self-titled cassette release on Dull Tools. And the world took note. Evan Minsker, writing for Pitchfork, says “they are loose with form, they pack in a lot of ideas, and they successfully deliver an emotionally complex narrative where joy is accompanied by an impossible-to-ignore undercurrent of danger. The band's debut outing is enigmatic—a Dull Tools record through and through—but it's also well crafted, full of stellar performances and unflinching lyrics.”

Little was said about New York (via Texas) band PARQUET FLOORS' debut effort, American Specialties. Released exclusively on cassette tape, the quasi-album was an odd collection of 4 track recordings that left those who were paying attention wanting more. A year of woodshedding live sets passed before the Courts committed another song to tape. The band's first proper LP, Light Up Gold, is a dynamic and diverse foray into the back alleys of the American DIY underground. Bright guitars swirl serpentine over looping, groovy post-punk bass lines and drums that border on robotic precision. While the initial rawness of the band's early output remains, the songwriting has gracefully evolved. Primary wordsmiths A. SAVAGE and AUSTIN BROWN combine for a dynamic lyrical experience, one part an erudite overflow of ideas, the other an exercise in laid-back observation. Lyrically dense, the poetry is in how it flows along with the melody, often times as locked-in as the rhythm section. Recorded over a few days in a ice-box practice space, Light Up Gold is equally indebted to Krautrock, The Fall, and a slew of contemporaries like Tyvek and Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

The self-titled album by NYC's art-rock project Eaters marries rich pulsing electronics, driving beats and guitar pyrotechnics. This music is an exploration of light, shadow, expansion, and transformation. It speaks to the vulnerability and resilience of the human spirit in the modern age.

Two albums in, with the link between each moment of slurring spoken word, piano ballad, and discordant “fuck you” song becoming less and less clear, we all ought to be asking how, in 2016, Dunedin is still spewing out bands as strange as Opposite Sex. Is it all the native psilocybin? The isolation? The musical ‘legacy’? Strange feelings come out in strange ways, as tends to happen in a city of miserable winter, depression, and a uni populace crawling with the sorts of fucking jocks about whom the songs basically write themselves. That’s because, in spite of the patented ‘sound’ of their city, the real Dunedin influence on Opposite Sex is an ideology. There’s punk, of course, as usual, but the bizarro lens of Xpressway—“the Dunedin label”—what with its Marxist dues and DIY purism, is the band’s heftiest inheritance thanks to how many of their peers come from this older, noisy school. It only helped their underground reputation that certain big-name ex-members of the Fall and the Pastels wound up being big fans of this obscure New Zealand band. Whichever way you have ‘em Opposite Sex have already left a permanent impression within today’s younger underground generation. Besides that one fact, there aren’t many unifying features of a band so scattered, but so brilliantly chaotic, and by no means confused. But that’s just what you get from a band with so much uncontrollable inspiration, with imagination that’s like not unlike mashing one’s hands against the keyboard of existence and expecting Shakespeare to come out. Judging by Hamlet, it’s just funny when it sort of does.

Somewhere between the afterparties of Art Basel and the cloud of exhaust from the Daytona 500 comes Soda, a raw and ugly mutation of punk that is as American as its name. 'Blonde On Blonde' is a panorama of the Sunshine State's seedy underbelly set at night. The back and forth vocals of Lara Lookabaugh and Arlington Garret remind one a bit of Royal Trux at their heaviest, or perhaps a more sinister B52's. Coming from the same tight-knit DIY scene that brought the world Merchandise, Cult Ritual, Neon Blood, St. Dad and American Snakeskin (the latter two which featured Mr. Garret), Soda carry with them a history of American punk that thrives outside of the usual culture centers of New York, LA and Austin. Edition of 500 copies.

The latest offering from Brooklyn's preeminent post wave ensemble FUTURE PUNX. “Dull Tools is the record label run by Andrew Savage, of Parquet Courts, and Chris Pickering, of Future Punx. Next month the label will put out the first Future Punx EP, I’m So Inspired. This follows two 7-inches from the synth-centered 5-piece, one of which was a split with Parquet Courts. Sonically, the two bands draw from different corners of the post-punk spectrum, but their attention to intricate lyrics and sprawled-out deadpan deliveries are points of common ground. Along with the announcement of their new release, Future Punx also have a new video for ‘Spike Train,’ a meditation on dreams, perception, and positive thinking. The video is dark and shadowy, with quick-moving bursts of light and color, much like the song itself.”
