For his latest project, drummer Julian Sartorius hiked for ten days through Switzerland. In his luggage: two drumsticks and a curiosity about the sounds they might produce along the way. Out of the beats collected en route he made the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève», an experimental sound collage that maps Switzerland far from the usual stereotypes. In the distribution of the record Sartorius is also charting new territory: It will not only be sold as a vinyl record but also as a hiking map with a download code. For his last major solo project – «Beat Diary» (2012 / Everest Records) – Julian Sartorius left the studio; each day for one year he played a track in his immediate surroundings. For the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» Sartorius progresses a thousand steps further: In October 2016 he donned his backpack and hiked for ten days from Basel to Geneva via the Jura Ridgeway Trail (270 kilometres). For sound sources he used what he found en route: tree trunks, hiker turnstiles, empty silos, dry corn stalks – each object evoking its own voice. As an explorer of the quotidian, Sartorius evoked with his drumsticks a universe of sound that’s hidden to the regular hiker. With a backpack full of recorded rhythmic patterns and sound sources Julian Sartorius returned to the studio to create the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève». Sartorius edited the different audio files, layering and combining them together. The result is an experimental sound collage in which every track represents one day of hiking and where the familiar meets the previously unheard. The album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» will be released in June 2017 by Bernese label Everest Records. It will be available in two formats – as a hiking map with a download code and as a regular 12” vinyl. The map, designed by Silvio Brügger, charts and retraces the paths that Sartorius walked, inviting people to follow in the footsteps of the artist. In addition, one track of the album will be released as an artwork postcard that can be played as a vinyl on a record deck. The album release tour will see Sartorius guide an audience along a short hike circuit during which Sartorius will improvise with objects he finds along the way. The audience participants will follow while listening using headphones that receive audio from a microphone Sartorius trains on the objects. These hikes will start and end at selected music venues.
Okra - Okra

Pianist Oli Kuster (Menschmaschine / Oli Kuster Kombo / Astronauten / Züri West) and musician and sound artist Robert Aeberhard (dadaad. an open tuning / Fitzgerald & Rimini / Trummer) met for a special kind of cooperation: «Okra» is a duo for piano and sounds. The grand piano as a sophisticated and well-established instrument meets raw soundscapes, made of field-recordings collected from all kinds of places in the world.Sounds and noises are distinguished from tones by their origin of irregular oscillations of arbitrary frequencies and amplitudes, whereas tones show periodic oscillations. The combination of sounds, noises and tones when played by «Okra» results in organic and interwoven creations, reduced and fragile moments. An enchanting, yet disturbing kind of “Traummusik” emerges, a film of acoustic pictures, inevitably taking the listener on a journey. The spaciousness of their music led the duo to play their concerts in surround sound, by placing loudspeakers also in the back of the audience. With this setup, the spatial richness of their music can be perceived as a physical experience. Consequentially, the album «Okra» is mixed in surround sound.

The new Album “Earthbound” from Nadja Stoller is a journey through the night. It takes you over open fields and through dense undergrowth to an inescapable and inevitable place of introspection. That which is grounded takes off into dizzying heights, what is light weighs heavily, whilst delicacy is paired with a distorted roughness. It is grand and beautiful, disconcerting and painful, leaving you with the feeling that things will never be the same again. The solo artist Nadja Stoller seeks out discomfort, difficulty and challenge. After her Parisian hedonistic phase which resulted in the album ‘Alchemy’ (2011) the singer and multi-instrumentalist withdrew in the winter of 2012 to an isolated place far from human civilization, the kind of place that could be located equally in the volcanic deserts of Iceland, the wide open prairies of Alabama, or in an abandoned backwater in the French Alps. During her hermit-like seclusion she encountered all kinds of creatures. But above all she faced own depths and heights, and ultimately, the eternal question of human existence.Nadja Stoller let the words she acquired there mature over two years, gradually assembling them together with fragments of banjo, piano, keytar and autoharp, before finally recording her songs in collaboration with Samuel Baur in his studio in Bern. What has emerged is a creation of ten very different sounding fragile songs which draw an arc from the bittersweet “A Heart” over the unfathomable “Vertigo” to the flirty “Strawberry Passion”.These unconventional odes are enhanced in concert by Nadja Stoller’s at once elfin, then Amazonian presence. She layers sounds piece by piece on the looper in front of the audience, only in the next minute to bring everything crashing together. It is magical and surreal, yet at the same time down to earth and natural. You are left with the sense that, not far from Stoller’s isolated cabin you could meet a Björk, an Emmylou Harris or a Camille.

After a variety of shows in considerable clubs and smelly basements, Rotkeller released their critically acclaimed debut «Lofbo.b» in 2011. Now they are ready to hit the listener with the second long player called «Herr Vodmar», which consists of beautifully assorted soulful balsam and productions made for the dancefloor.Their writing remains: the cushy manageable amount of fiddly sounds, adept drum works and playful melodies, the building and sometimes dissolving compositions, which Rotkeller properly transport on stage. «Herr Vodmar» will, be it the record or the live performance, do more than just appeal to the listeners, it will do more on many levels.
