Industrial Folklore Tapes Volume III - Film as Fabric
10" | 2018 | UK | Original (Folklore Tapes)
17,99 €*
Release:2018 / UK – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
The third Industrial Folklore Tapes release is constructed from live recordings of a performance tilted ‘Film as Fabric’ by Mary Stark, which examines relationships between textile practice and filmmaking. The performance repeatedly involves sound in physical formats through optical sound, work song and recordings of weaving machinery on vinyl records, the amplified mechanisms of the film projector and sewing machine, and Mary’s voice. The performance highlights the now obsolete industrial practice of linear film editing and shows photochemical film as a sculptural reflective fabric, measured and worn on the body, cut with scissors and stitched on the sewing machine. Through the filmmaking technology of optical sound, fabric and stitch patterns are transformed into noise, referring to a lesser-known sonic world associated with textile production.

The project approaches the tool as an extension of ourselves; our contact, relationship to and being in the world. This first release through Industrial Folklore Tapes features the original exhibition recording, it features each tool spoken and then played in turn.

This second edition in the new Industrial Folklore series from Folklore Tapes is a sub-series exploring the hidden industries and workshops of clog makers, saddlers, quarrymen, dry-stone wallers, cotton mills and spring makers. This record commemorates the veiled labour and voice of the spring. The first side reveals the workshop of B.P.S Springs, featuring the men and the machines that have inhabited the space for thirty eight years. The second side is a soundscape of tones from over ninety collected helical springs, handmade at B.P.S workshop and mounted in a circular arrangement atop a piece of wood, amplified and either plucked or oscillated with a motor.

Rituals and Practices was originally released on cassette in Autumn, 2012 and features a grimoire of sonic spells exploring symbolic customs and activities from the county of Devon. Paper Dollhouse responds to the general idea and definition of the term ritual, by conducting a ceremony in the rural landscape within a circle of trees and stone. Magpahi weaves together a rich tapestry encompassing six different forms of ritual from the West Country, largely informed by the work of the late folklorist Theo Brown. Alison presents a sonic vitrine of tales and customs.
