Release:2012 / EU – Reissue

Long-awaited second pressing of Erkki Kurenniemi's key recordings and sonic experiments made between 1963-1975. One of the great unsung pioneers of the electronic age, Erkki Kurenniemi (1941-2017) played a central role in the development of electronic music in Finland. In the early 1960s he founded The University of Helsinki Electronic Music Studio, where the most well known of his electroacoustic recordings were realized. "Erkki Kurenniemi, a brilliant, eccentric figure - imagine a Finnish hybrid of Stockhausen, Buckminster Fuller and Steve Jobs." ~Simon Reynolds: 'Retromania - Pop Culture's Addiction To Its Own Past' (2011).

Pharaoh Overlord steer an exceedingly singular course on this album. Augmented by Antti Boman (Demilich) and Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust), the psychedelic supergroup (consisting of members from Circle) have taken their oeuvre to a whole new psychiatric plateau on their ninth studio album. Libido-driven arithmetics do not apply on these aberrant tracks. 'Zero' provides an offbeat rock and roll implosion, with its sonic realm contorting inwards like a sapient voice muffled by the gentle void of cyberspace. What the album has to offer is exposure to genuine ingenuity.

Sakset is a collaboration of Finnish sound artists Läjä Äijälä (Terveet Kädet, Death Trip, The Kolmas, The Sultans...), Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle) and Tomi Leppänen (Circle). The group's avant-electro debut 'Lahja' is a haunting album driven by distorted arpeggios, subliminal harmonics and echo chamber melodies. The band's chaotic appeal is extracted in equal parts from Kraftwerk and Rancid Hell Spawn, nailed down by Läjä Äijälä's guttural charm. This music equals sex.

Curated primarily from high-quality studio sessions engineered by the late Tom Mallon, the double-LP compilation amasses 24 tracks never before pressed on vinyl. These songs span the wiry charge of a 1980 demo to a charred feedback orgy consummated in 2011. As time marches on, the sound evolves and intensifies but stays true to Craig Gray's basic template, drawn when he founded the group as the predominantly instrumental successor to his classic Bay Area punk quartet, Negative Trend. Detours along the way include a pair of outtakes featuring American Music Club vocalist Mark Eitzel, as well as five haunted collaborations with ex-Sleepers frontman Ricky Williams, whose 1992 passing truncated his second and final tenure with the Midgets. As distinctive as they are, however, these singers don't matter too much. The band's undeniable core is the friction generated by guitarists Gray and Paul Hood, in which concise, circular chord progressions fornicate with expressionistic smears. Set against the weighty, shifting rhythms of Mallon and original drummer Tim Mooney (also RIP), the elemental riffs transform into a thing of searing majesty and bruising beauty.
