Curtis & Dondi, brothers by name & nature, epitomise the strength of musical talent that Chicago was nurturing during the late 70’s & throughout 80’s. The boys started singing in their early youth, growing up in a musical environment with their Mother, a Jazz singer and their Father, her manager and also key booking agent for local acts and touring talents such as The O’Jays, Dells, Isaac Hayes, Earth, Wind & Fire to name but a few.Their breakthrough came via a bet, The Jacksons were playing at the Guys & Gals Club in the South Side of Chicago, around the corner at the Pacesetters Lounge, Curtis & Dondi’s Father struck a bet that his two boys could give a better show. Two kids aged less than 10 took to the stage to perform a James Brown cover, the first song that they learnt, and their voices & moves earned them the credit due. From then on in, the two Bullard brothers would begin to perform around the Chicago circuit, playing the clubs of their time such as The High Chaparral, Burning Spear, Budland and also of course the Guys & Gals and open up for acts like The Sylvers Band, Barry White, B.B. King. Curtis & Dondi’s Father was also a police officer and, as well as the boys playing with musicians previously mentioned, enlisted the county jail back to be their backing band on a few occasions. The aptly named Capri Taurus release (it’s name given by their Mother relating to their star signs) was recorded in 1982 at the P.S. Recording Studios, owned and operated by Paul Serrano. This prolific studio gave a voice to recordings by Terry Callier, Luther Vandross, Natalie Cole, Ramsey Lewis amongst a wealth of others. Curtis, at the tender age of 12, was the main songwriter of the group and alongside their cousin & guitarist, Carlos Showers, they came up with the tracks ‘Magic From Your Love’ & ‘Don’t Be Afraid’. Both tracks recorded in one take were then pursued by Thomas Washington a.k.a Tom Tom 84 an innovative writer, arranger and producer in Chicago to turn their tracks into a local hits.Curtis & Dondi would then hit the road on & off for the next 5 or so years, travelling around in their Fathers RV and performing in several different states at various clubs, airforce & naval bases.

New label Smiling C starts off with a compilation LP of released and unreleased works by the Arabic rapper, Shams Dinn. For their first ever reissue, Smiling C connects with the Arabic rapper Shams Dinn to release a compilation his best songs, including the hit "Hedi Bled Noum". The compilation covers his entire career of with songs made between 1985-1990, most of which went unreleased at the time. One of the few Moroccan rappers to ever be recorded on vinyl back in the 80s, Shams Dinn was a pioneer of Arabic flow. Starting his career because he wanted to be a positive light for the Arabic immigrants living in France. He earned his status participating in freestyle competitions, and performing in small clubs around Europe. His career came to a turning point when he was asked by a major label to record a full LP. Unfortunately, the label decided they didn't want to promote Arabic music (largely because of the Gulf War) - and asked Shams to translate the Arabic to French. Shams Dinn wouldn't stand for that, and he was dropped from the label. The following years he worked at a school, teaching kids how to rap and express themselves through words. The reissue comes with newly imagined art, and an inner sleeve with interview and photos.

Big Crown is proud to present this reissue 7 inch from Texas’s own Kool & Together. The A side, “Sittin’ On a Red Hot Stove” is an infectious, medium-paced funk movement that chugs along with the help of some sharp drums from Joe and a rolling bass line that never quits. Originally edited by Texas record mogul Huey Meaux, the 45 version clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, and gave the band its strongest single. It’s an anecdotal tale of a woman who is lusted after but so mean-spirited, she could melt the romance away.Side B is an unreleased demo version from Kool & Together working up the monster “Funky Nassau”. Clearly something they never finished, the raw recording and lo fidelity of it is what give what they call “Nassau Beat” it’s charm.

Originally released on the Harlem label, and later licensed to Falcon only to oddly appear on their Kris Bravo LP. Ramos stays close to the original, but adds enough to the tune to make it a must have for funk collectors. The B side “Funky Resurgence” comes by way of vibes player/bandleader Ulysses Crockett who was a stalwart on the Bay Area scene of the 1960's first with his Latin Jazz group Afro Blue Persuasion and later Ulysses Crockett Magic. He also played in The Skins w/ the legendary Bill Graham. "Funky Resurgence" was one of several compositions he wrote for the 1971 play "Resurgence." During this period, Ulysses was also going through law school and he remains a legal voice, writer and activist in the Bay Area.

Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming oneof the year’s big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, ‘Haze,’ solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz. When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistrylies at the heart of ‘Haze,’ a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band’s debut. Produced together byShrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who’s played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, andcountless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager’s basement and Michels’ Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed “theShangri La of Soul.”

Philadelphian Jazz legend Benny Golson has had a long and storied career, he's played with luminaries such as John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey just to mention a small handful. Obviously his credentials are rock solid and his skills as a tenor sax legend are undisputed.'I'm always dancin' to the music' from 1978 is taken from Benny's LP of the same name. Released on the mighty Columbia imprint as a mono & stereo promo-only white label it's status among underground soul, funk & jazz aficionados is heavyweight, a true 'rare groove' indeed. Produced by George Butler (whose credentials are no less than impressive!) this one has been a hugely popular dance record that has never been easy to track down in 12" form, often topping 'most expensive' record lists it's a record that certainly won't appear in your local second hand spot anytime soon.Due to it's scarcity and the fact that 'I'm always dancin' to the music' is such a stellar, uplifting piece of jazz-funk-disco goodness it's no surprise that the bootleggers have tried their hand at replicating this masterful release, often resulting in some fairly shoddy facsimiles. Fear not, this beautiful, legit repress comes to you via the combined forces of Above Board distribution and Sony Music, utilising their superior and original master sources and lovingly remastered and repressed just as the 1978 promo 12" was released. No messing around here.Essential, rare and beautiful - Another amazing nugget from the vaults!

The original, the inspirational, the bombastic, the never bettered, the one.'Don't make me wait' is all of the above and so much more. Classic to the core. Huge earth shattering record right here.OK, so the scoop, for the uninitiated is this - the Peech Boys were Larry Levan's group, we're talking early 80's NYC here, 1982 to be precise, around the height of the Paradise Garage as Larry was making the transition from superstar DJ to producer. He brought a sparse, dubbed out, narcotic late night feel to the overall sound of this record. This was a short-lived project, but the influence is still felt today, the Peech Boys DNA is inside the veins of modern dance music, as is Larry's. There is no underestimating what an impact this record had. 7+ minutes of electronic bliss, trailblazing stuff, and don't get us started on the dub. Do yourself a favour, BUY this classic if you don't own it already, you'll keep coming back to it time and time again. Guaranteed. This essential 12" is repressed here in it's original 1979 glory, an essential classic that has stood the test of time for the last 30+ years & is now available again, remastered & repressed for 2017 in conjunction with West End Records, NYC.

Zach Cooper and Vic DiMotsis return as King Garbage with their debut album, Make It Sweat. Following their 2013 debut on our Bangers & Ash 12 series (BASH003) and solo releases in 2016 - Coopers reflective, harrowing The Sentence (SUS011) and DiMotsis blistering, soulful beat tape, Mine Eyes Dazzle (SUS017) - the duo double down on soul and funk traditions to share new ways of communicating soul across eight rippers to the dome. Make It Sweat follows the sunny and smoked rhythm and blues mode of BASH003 with a greater glow (mix care of Rachel Alina, Styles ace in the hole, get to know) and peerless compositional prowess. Check the wandering, hallucinatory desert dirge Devil, the Sufjan peaks and troughs of a castaways song, Sharks, or the lover's inebriated lament for one last jam before heading home, Lost In The Sauce. Imagining the rhythm sections of Pino Palladino and Questlove amongst the vocals of Beth Gibbons or Sam Cooke will put you in the right headspace for King Garbage. Vic and Zach melt influence and experience with sheer joy, good humor and hearts full of friendship to burnish gems of dusted pop. Vics vocals interplay with Zachs guitars like a spell on Merry Go Round, their respective contributions bending under and over each other with endearing coordination. Forbidden Lovers, an ode to a friend who stays home with records instead of DJing out, ups the funky ante to the records catchiest heights. The flexibility on display is maddening - from croon to four-top harmonization, from breaks full of grit to heavenly horn sections, Vic and Zach push themselves into new territory with each track, grinning and improvising their way from one corner of the country to the next. Make It Sweat refers to Vic and Zachs personal manifesto to smile in the face of looming obstacles. A turn of phrase called out by either friend to encourage the other to play up, crank it, and go big - words of encouragement when the pressure is on and the spotlight shines its hottest. The title might taste of vice, but the sentiment couldnt be further placed. After twelve years of friendship and collaboration, the duo have learned to lean on each other and encourage forward motion no matter the outcome. Make it sweat is their rallying cry, a playful and in-the-moment call to arms. Styles have had the pleasure to grow with these two friends over the years. Though both have left the city for greener pastures in Asheville and Black Mountain, NC, they remain integral to our NY experience. Zachs smile greeted us upon landing back in the city when Styles' was only just beginning, leading us down some life-changing sonic roads to eye-opening discoveries; Vics vocals on BASH003 changed our perspective on the range of music Styles should support. It is our distinct honor to share a snapshot of King Garbages vibe, one already called upon to support the greats - Ghostface, Raekwon, and Talib Kweli, to name a few - at their North Carolina stops. King Garbage are the new crop of American soul players, the Muscle Shoals Swampers of the file-sharing generation. Zach Cooper and Vic DiMotsis compose freewheeling and heartbreakingly endearing soul, embracing the roots of American music with Cheshire grins and a sound that's all their own. King Garbage will release Make It Sweat on September 22, 2017 in digital, CD and vinyl formats.

We can think of fewer things more Spanish than the works of Alfonso Carlos Santisteban. He was an anarchic genius, he was scorned on, or worst, ignored. Talent and necessity as well as geniality and the most prosaic worldliness collided in his persona. If we can blame Santisteban for anything it would be for the way he lived and breathed music. A tireless Spanish music workaholic, he made no differences between copla, rumba, pop or soul and didn’t mind if it was for Bambino, La Polaca, Mara Lasso, Calibre 38, Ellas or Mila. A sincere devotee of jazz and immediately seduced by bossa and by cinematographic music, his full works, full of inevitable flaunts as well as moments of geniality, can be critiqued for negligence and an unfinished sense of accomplishment but at the same time his panoramic view and daring musical vision, sometimes just as reckless as accurate, was evident and has made his work endurable several decades later.Spanish Moog, an album Adarce Records has the pleasure to present, is one of those strange and almost invisible musical milestones that our man portrayed in Italy.Just as he wrote in his autobiography, in 1973 and thanks to the help of José Antonio de La Loma, he met two of the capos of the most important film music publishing empire in Italy, Giuseppe Campi and Giuseppe Giachi. They were about to open a C.A.M. (Creazione Artistiche Musicale) delegation in Madrid so they could start building their business in the most exciting times for Spanish film industry. The company started by signing two Spanish composers: our man, and Waldo de Los Ríos.Deception and frustration would come soon. Apart from a large number of small (or more like embarrassing) film scores, Santisteban published five library albums - catalogues of fragments and music pieces offered on a menu and sold afterwards to both co-producers as well as film producers - up until 1975 for C.A.M.: Ambiente e Folklore, Rinascimenti, Night Club, Situazione per Orchestra and this one, Spanish Moog.Five of the songs included (Jugando al toro, Nuestro Ayer, Gitanos, Torremolinos Soul and Todo ha sido un sueño) were originally recorded by Santisteban and Rafael Ferro for the album Flamenco Pop (Sintonía, 1969), and three more (Zorongo, Nuestro ayer and Tierra mojada) were originally meant for “Sabor a fresa” (Belter, 1971) by La Nueva Banda de Santisteban.Beyond the supposed editorial filibusterism what is left is a wonderful festival of grooves and beats; an omnipresent Moog, Wah Wah and ‘cañi’ soul blend in “Torremolinos soul”.Dreamy melancholy, fuzz and southern tocuh in “Tierra mojada”, impeccable arabesque beats in the steadfast “Zorongo”, funk and folklore sown tight in “Noche en Marbella” and pure space Blaxploitation in “Tute de Reyes”…As like other pioneers and talented adventurers in our country, Alfonso Carlos Santisteban would collide inevitably with a time already lost in the annals of history. We cannot think of a better way to resume his works and his person than the sentence he used to open his autobiography: …I speak with the authority given to me by failure…Text by Don Sicalíptico

Warm on the heels of their recent Soul covers 7" on Wah Dubplate, here on the brand new Soul Flip imprint are the first results. Marvin Gaye's rare take on the Tom Jones classic "It's Not Unusual" gets lifted further with fresh beats, brass & percussion. Sam & Dave's "Soul Sister, Brown Sugar" is stripped right down, then reconstructed into something much, much heavier. TIP!!

Perhaps the greatest crossover artist that ever was, it is impossible to overstate the impact that Ray Charles had on the evolution of both R&B and rock 'n' roll. Charles' distinctive style transcended genres and influenced musicians from every musical background and from every corner of the globe, but it was during the mid-fifties that Charles really began to rule the R&B charts. His legendary debut LP - originally released in 1957 (and later renamed Hallelujah! I Love Her So) for Atlantic - was essentially a collection of those hit singles. In 1955 Ray had his first number one hit, 'I've Got A Woman,' followed by his second and third number one hits, 'A Fool For You,' and 'Drown in My Own Tears,' over just the next few months. Almost all of the remaining tracks on the album were also top ten hits from that same period, including 'Greenbacks,' 'Hallelujah I Love Her So,' and 'This Little Girl of Mine.' This was undoubtedly the era that defined the legend."

Seine Krönung fanddiese fulminante Entwicklung mit dem Grammy Award 2016 in der Kategorie "Best Roots Performance" fürden Mavis-Staples-Song "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean". Auf seinem zweiten Album setzt Son Little denbislang eingeschlagenen Weg umstandslos fort. Little doesn't strive to reproduce his influences;he recombines them into something new."

Conforming to the usual high standards we've come to expect, Rocafort Records have got their hands on another sublime soul 7inch. Originally released in 1970 on the amusingly named Kack label, soulman Bobby Jones assures us that there's nothing but the smell of sweet soul music happening here.Written and produced by well-known Chicago music veteran, Maurice Lee Simpkins, "Welcome Back A Foolish Man" does everything an early 70s mid-tempo two-stepper should. Urgent, pleading lyrics telling of unspeakable heartache, sweeping strings, twangy guitars, heavenly backing vocals that lift everything towards the Gods. All solidly crowned by the raw, expressive vocal talent of Bobby Jones – a consistantly worthy bluesy/soul singer who never really got the recognition he deserved.Interesting to note that both "Welcome Back A Foolish Man" and the similarly veined B side, "Lovin' Hard, Livin' Good" were sung by soul siren Ruby Andrews a few years prior but with different lyrics, different composers and label. A mystery worth solving for any of you musos out there !

Kalita Records are extremely proud to announce the first ever official reissue of Darryl Douglas' 1981 gospel disco monster 'Holding On'. Born out of a tight-knit friendship group based in Queens, New York, the gospel collective Darryl Douglas Inc. existed for a brief period of just two years. Yet their single 'Holding On' is as contemporary-sounding today as it was when it was first released in 1981. Originally pressed in a quantity of just one thousand, original copies have long been sought-after by both DJs and collectors alike, acknowledged as one of the best dancefloor-focused gospel tracks to have ever been pressed to wax. Here we offer the 12" in its original form, accompanied by interview-based liner notes and a never-before-seen photo of the band, helping to tell the story and truly celebrate such a great track. We hope that you love the record as much as us!

Narrowing down Mildlife's style into a genre is almost impossible, as they bond over the desire to push musical boundaries. No strangers to the Melbourne band scene, the four old friends have been drawing crowds through an epic journey at intimate venues and festivals for the best part of the past 4 years. Developing a tight live show bolstered by wild improvisation, the group have left punters itching for their first full length studio album "Phase" that mines jazz, psych and disco for its irresistible groove.Capturing the spirit of the band, the 6 track debut LP of kaleidoscope jams is the interplanetary path between jazz, funk and disco with the perfect amalgamation of cosmic electronics and soulful acoustic instrumentation."A melting pot of musical sensations, the group combine progressive 1970s sounds with electronic krautrock, backed by a mixture of rhythmic funk, house, and dream-pop, to create an addictive atmosphere that's illustrated perfectly by their first single 'The Magnificent Moon'. An introduction to their highly anticipated debut LP due out early next year on Research Records, the nine minute masterpiece is a colossal adventure throughout the group's psyche." - Dummy Mag

Magic in Threes release their second release on KingUnderground with a double sided funk 45 inspired by 70s soundtracks. The band Magic in Threes, consisting of 3 members are from Nashville, Tennessee. On Friday 9th February 2018 we are releasing two songs of theirs that sound like they could be on an old KPM library record or a 1970's soundtrack. The band have a full length in the making coming out on KingUndeground in the near future. In 2016, the band were writing and recording a new track every week. They spent so much time in the studio that year that the song ideas just kept coming, one after another. They have always been rooted in library music and over the years they've dug deeper and deeper into that sphere of inspiration. "Finnish Funk" and "Shot Thru The Grease" are both loving homages to that genre. Heavy beats with diabolical melodies are the name of the game for The A-side, "Finnish Funk". On the flip side "Shot Thru The Grease" has more of a loping feel to it with ample portions of moody thematic elements. Like a score to a lost 1970s Italian action film, these tracks hit like a hard nosed detective closing in on his next collar.

What started out as a simple email exchange between a young, hungry beatmaker and a seasoned player in the worlds of jazz and midwestern indie hip-hop, has resulted in a vibrant record nearly a decade in the making. On one side of Let It Out sits Miles Bonny, a long time musical collaborator who spent his youth soaking in powerful musical moments in NYC under the tutelage of his trumpet-slinging father, Francis Bonny, and later as a teen immersed in New York’s busy indie-hip-hop scene. As he grew up Miles cemented himself a niche in the Midwest, most notably in Lawrence, Kansas where tireless forays into beatmaking led to the founding of the much-loved INnatesounds Crew and record label, as well as a series of solo releases and collaborative projects. Eventually shifting his focus to his own vocal stylings, it wasn’t long before Miles caught the attention of the international music community, including the young, curious ears of the at time unknown, soon-to-be future R&B sensation Ta-Ku. Through a series of emails and conversations, Ta-Ku asked to send Miles beats and the two planned to work on a series of tracks. From there the pair developed a friendship that was built upon mutual encouragement and a creative admiration between two artists both navigating their own personal and professional responsibilities. The Let It Out EP, released on Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings, acts as the culmination of such an intimate and organic journey. Recorded by Miles in Kansas City during a time he was experiencing the oft-turbulent tasks of true adulthood, the record focus on the life of a young father, underpinned by how we often bottle up difficult emotions and creativity when the pressures of today’s complicated world reach fever pitch. Brimming with emotive, intimate lyrics from Miles spread amidst Ta-Ku’s soul-drenched beat work and syrupy future grooves, the EP will hit close to home for anyone whose daily lives calls for a much needed dose of personal reflection and chilled-out decompression

The A side “I Explained It All” is an early Paul & The Tall Trees recording done in between recording sessions for Our Love In The Light. A haunting number equal parts floaty vocal and crushing drums co-produced by Paul & Leon Michels. From Paul on the session: “The new year approaching. Saturday we’d have a P&TTT family get together. Write music. It was dark and damp down there. Smokey. Windows the size of shoe boxes. The old 64 Rocket was hot. Pop bought a Rickenbacker.” The B side “Watch Out” is actually the tune that started the whole thing between Big Crown and 79.5. Years ago Kate Mattison who was then performing as Mattison came to Soul Fire studios to record some of her demos, this is how her music got on our radar. Some years after that Danny Akalepse picked up the “Watch Out” 45 she had pressed independently in a record shop and fell in love with the tune. When we started Big Crown she was one of the first people we called up to see what she was up to. Her answer was 79.5. “Watch Out” is a warning to a man who is with the wrong woman set over lush keys and a spacious arrangement.

Since the release of their self titled EP in 2016 The Shacks have been collecting fans that are fast becoming as hypnotized as we've been since first hearing Shannon’s ethereal voice on top of “Strange Boy"". Highlights of the year have been opening tours for Chicano Batman, and Khruangbin, as well as ""This Strange Effect"" becoming world famous via the Apple iPhone 8 ad campaign. The A side, “Follow Me”, was one of the first songs recorded for Haze almost two years ago. With “black mirror” esque lyrics over a hypnotic mid tempo groove, Follow Me leaves you feeling joyful, calmed, and queasy, all at the same time. The B side “Texas” is an another song from their upcoming album. Recorded in Max Shrager's home studio in Princeton and then finished with Leon Michels at the Diamond Mine in Queens. Texas is a perfect representation of The Shacks signature sound with Shannon’s voice balancing out the gritty yet smooth production.

In the early 1970s, the collective known as The California Playboys was the backing band for R&B singer Lester Young (not to be confused with the jazz saxophonist of same name) on a series of singles, before recording their sole album under their own name, „Trying To Become A Millionaire“.The instrumental precision of „Trying To Become A Millionaire“ is immediately evident; clearly the product of a group of seasoned session musicians. Incorporating Latin music elements, pre-disco rhythms, bouncy funk bass lines and seamlessly clean guitar, the album calls to mind the music of Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Bobbi Humphrey. Depending on the track, the vocal delivery is at times reminiscent of Bobby Womack, Donny Hathaway or even Marvin Gaye, but all provide a complimentary gravity and substance to the flawless instrumentals. The album was never repressed or reissued since its initial run on the San Francisco-based label Loadstone in 1976. As a result, it has become incredibly sought-after in the ensuing years. Original vinyl copies, when they even appear, have been known to sell for $1,000 or more among collectors. For the first time in nearly 40 years, Manufactured Recordings presents this highly coveted soul treasure on LP to a new audience of fans.

Stating it softly..... Irish music of the 1970's was simply not synonymous with groove music in any way. Avid music aficionado's were totally 'rockist' then (to use an old tag from the same time!) That thread tends to follow with record collecting of vintage Irish music of that time, down to this day. We'll throw a little change into that narrative here - the groove is very rare, and not a little quare! We've looked at the entire recorded music picture of what happened here on this little island into the 1980's, and we're bringing back this....We can't tell you that this music comes from a strange place - it comes from a steadily steep and VERY strange place! A small place that was not a little conflicted societally and politically back then - and in every way too, public and private. However it was also a time of great change. Living through it seemed like a rite of passage that moved off from some manner of dark age, and then over forward into a brighter light. Modernity beckoned, and not just with the technology! So what can you hear here? It's no coincidence that this music also makes a similar coming of age. Recording techniques were wholly embraced here, in this era. Late 1970's Irish music saw sound engineering and music production artistry advance from previous, and in a very big way. As studio's moved away from simple and straight audio captures, the music really benefitted. So what can you hear here? We're bringing you two sides of this story on two big black twelve inch slates. The first slate has an abundantly sweet clubbier sound of past-funk groove music. The second slate gives you an edgier angle of what the post-punkers got up to, after they too got their hands on the same danceflooring. This is really but only the beginning: There's so much more to come!

The debut album for singer/songwriter/producer, Charlotte Dos Santos. Born in Norway, Charlotte combines soul, jazz, rare groove and Afrolatin influences, with a warm sense of storytelling & an angelic voice that seems to float over any track it’s on. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY – Charlotte has been making waves as of late with her sentimentally-timeless singles “Red Clay” and “Good Sign,” and keen visual aesthetic (best seen in her music videos, which she co-directs). Now Charlotte makes good on all of the potential she’s shown thus far with the release of her debut project, Cleo. The project compiles a few lost Soundcloud and compilation fan-favorites (“Move On,” “Take It Slow,” and “Watching You”) with stand-out pieces (including “Good Sign,” “Cleo,” “King Of Hearts”) – all coming together to paint a singular, yet universal, coming-of-age love story. On the album title’s significance, Charlotte explains “’Cleo’ is a woman who represents power, femininity, courage and independence. She is ambitious and fearless, yet humble. She is the woman I feel I am becoming, and the woman I feel all girls could be.” Charlotte wrote & produced the project herself, with Oslo beatmaker Fredfades (of the Mutual Intentions crew) contributing on four songs as well.

Strictly limited 7inch!We should have come out before with this but time is always tight and we wanted to put the necessary attention and care on the second number on our label from this incredible artist. It took a while also because we have put together a family job, asking Willie's daughter Lisa, who is an amazing creative self on her own, if we could use one of her creations as artwork on the pressed labels, plus Fabio had to sleep and think on how to craft the best possible graphic package, and me and Max remastered it 2 or 3 times, as usual lookin after a perfection that never lands. Green Coil guys scraped Willie's memory barrel allowing a comprehensive sleeve note that helps to frame the recording in the right athmosphere of the time. As Mr. Wright recalls, “Real Thing” was recorded "around the same time as the 'Telling The Truth” album. Though there’s no certainty on the exact year, 1976 is the best guess as to when. The track was done at a proper recording studio, but Willie deliberately staged it to sound like it was recorded live in a club, including calling out hellos to waitresses and restaurant staff, who weren't actually there. The impetus for making this recording, and for writing and playing it during those days, was the fact that disco was literally wiping out all other forms of pop music, and even big acts were having to make concessions and put out disco-like concoctions to stay "current." Some of his fellow singers and musicians occasionally teased him saying he was too much of a "folkie" to do a decent modern dance tune. At the time, Willie's club performance lists were very genre-bending, and while on the surface he appeared to make concessions to popular musical trends by including covers of many current songs, his method was to slyly transform the covers and play against type. He was a performance artist who would show up at a soul club in a tuxedo and freak them out by playing mostly Dylan, Richie Havens, obscure folk and white rock, then go to a white venue and bang out a spectacular classic soul set. “Real Thing” is an upbeat dance song with a street-rough yet groovy feeling that perfectly expresses the essence of Willie Wright.

Keep in mind the release year, January 1972, before approaching the matter covered in this precious jewel: the black rhythm of the incredible Africa-To-Day, the “fourth world” Jon Hassell-style of Green Dawn, the “exotic” touch à la Martin Denny (Lonely Village, Echos), the Sortilège’s reference to the electronic new wave (really!), the folk influence (Rite, Folk-tune). With many years in advance, Umiliani synthesizes in Africa sounds and styles that will make then the fortune of well-celebrated and famous artists.

Amazing collection of Disco Music released in the 80s (1980-84) on the Nigerian label Duomo Music Ltd. and reissued here for the first time..The late 70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Mr Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young monied businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black’s “Someone to love” (DSL 001) which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, “Honey, Honey” (DSL 002) was the label’s second release and his most successful album. Also produced the labels 19th release, Bindiga’s, “No More Starvation” (DSL 019), an afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and djs and changes hands for huge sums. Its been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah´s disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time.

Though Spencer Wiggins did not make the R&B charts until his Fame 45 ‘Double Lovin’’ in 1970, it is his eight Goldwax singles, released in the latter half of the 60s, for which he is rightly famous among soul fans. They epitomise Memphis soul, veering from deep melancholic ballads to raucous uptempo groovers.Wiggins’ fans dig every aspect of his music; his voice is ideal for the southern soul sound. That genre is close to the blues and ‘Lover’s Crime’, his first 45 on the Bandstand subsidiary, was an early Isaac Hayes composition of that ilk. ‘Sweet Sixteen’, which was unreleased until 1977, is a full-on blues, but presumably not issued by Goldwax as they wanted to keep Spencer known as a soul singer, even though he excels on the number. Goldwax’s strong country influence is apparent on ‘I Never Loved A Woman (The Way I Love You)’ which certainly rivals Aretha’s breakthrough single from a couple of years previously. ‘Once In A While (Is Better Than Never At All)’, written by ex-country singer and Goldwax boss Quinton Claunch and George Jackson’s ‘Old Friend’ are also in the country bag. The dramatic ballad ‘Uptight Good Woman’ was penned by Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson and is probably Wiggins’ best-known recording; it is a highlight of his live performances. Penn and Oldham also provided ‘Take Me Just As I Am’, another stand-out track. ‘He’s Too Old’ and ‘I’m A Poor Man’s Son’ are vibrant, warm-hearted numbers taken at a jaunty pace, still very much southern soul; ‘Lonely Man’ is the only song which hints at Detroit’s influence and has consequently cost Wiggins’ 45 collectors appreciably more than the norm. Wiggins’ career suffered by being in the shadows of James Carr at Goldwax and that may have been the reason why Claunch, a very fair-minded man, let this superb singer move to nearby Fame, along with some Goldwax tracks they had already cut on him in those studios. He also had artistic success at Sounds of Memphis in 1973; unissued tracks from there as well as Goldwax have strengthened his reputation. He is primarily a preacher now but his 2010 appearance at the Cleethorpes rare soul weekender demonstrated he is still a great performer and he recently completed a successful two-date visit to London and Manchester with his brother, manager and fellow singer Percy.
