If there was one band whose appearance at and support for the Bill Graham Memorial Concert - held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on November 3rd 1991, just 8 days after Bill and his girlfriend, Melissa Gold, plus pilot Steve Kahn, were killed in a fatal helicopter accident - was not just assured but all but mandatory, it was The Grateful Dead. The Dead’s set concluded with ‘Sunshine Daydream’ but two encores followed - a deeply affecting version of ‘Forever Young’ with Neil Young fronting the group, and then a bittersweet ‘Touch of Grey’. The actual finale of the afternoon featured many of the artists who had performed getting onto the stage for a rousing and spirited ‘Amazing Grace’, ending a sad day during which emotions were clearly mixed, but one that had ultimately proven joyous and – as it had been tagged – one full of laughter, love and music.

This is a recording of a cult event, The Grateful Dead live at the Filmore Auditorium on November 19th 1966. Recorded before their first album came out, this record features three primeval versions of tunes from their debut record and eight goodies, standards and originals, that were not featured on any official studio and live recording up to 1970’s “Working man’s dead”. We are right there, on this magic night in November 1966 when psychedelic rock was still something fresh and exciting and the emerging hippie movement had not exploded yet. That came half a year later with the invasion of Haight-Ashbury. But these recordings are not only of historical importance, their musical value lies on an amazing level. The band smokes on stage throughout the performance. The sound is muggy for sure but each instrument comes through as it should and the simmering duels of guitar and organ make your head swirl. This album will certainly make the young generation of 60s music aficionados go crazy. A new beautiful cover artwork and some good work on the overall sound quality restoration make this album a joyful experience. And be sure, something like this 17 + minutes version of “In the midnight hour” will have rarely hit your turntable. The overall atmosphere is just haunting. Even their official “Live / Dead” album will never reach this intensity. The release reminds of the early Doors or Iron Butterfly live recordings released in the last few years. A band at it's prime with the world to gain and nothing to lose.

The natural gravitation to 1977 as the year of choice for many ‘deadheads’ often leaves 1976 looking like the younger brother of the high school quarterback. But 1976 might just be the best kept secret in the world of Grateful Dead ‘alternative’ recordings, as heard on this live 1976 live FM broadcast recorded at the Orpheum Theatre, San Francisco.

Presented here across the three installments of this release and for the first time on vinyl, this legendary gig is now available for all to enjoy, some 45 years since that winter night in northern California when the Grateful Dead were the most inventive and creative act on the US touring circuit. Keith Godchaux joined Grateful Dead in mid October 1971 as a replacement on keyboards for the ailing Pigpen who was unable to undertake the rigors of touring in the late ‘71 season. The group were re-energised by this new intake of talent, and the brace of home-turf shows performed at Frisco’s Harding Theater across the 6th and 7th November weekend were rarely bettered at this juncture in the Dead’s career. The 500 seater Old Harding was a tiny venue for the group at a time when most local shows were either at Winterland or, occasionally, at the Berkeley Community Theater.

A Grateful Dead broadcast on KSAN for the final time as they play on home turf for a worthy cause. The Benefit Concert for Cambodian Refugees, held at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on January 13th, 1980. Although the Dead were the headliners by 1980, they still played just 76 minutes - a very limited time in comparison to the three-plus hours the group would usually play around this era. The finale - Sugar Magnolia, features the guitar playing of Carlos Santana.
