On Skepta's long-awaited new album, the grime pioneer is full of sneering contempt for popular culture’s industry of image, the press, the police, and the government at large.Skepta produced eight of the twelve tracks himself, and they have the same roughly hewn power of his early instrumentals, measured but fiery stews of dancehall, jungle, UK funky, and garage. When it works, it's bone-rattling stuff. Elsewhere, it's a mixed bag, sonically and qualitatively: He caricatures Noah “40” Shebib’s rose-quartz soul on “Ladies Hit Squad;” “Crime Riddim,” produced by Blaikie and Skepta’s brother Jason, has the wild flair of a Death Grips track; and “Numbers” (featuring and co-produced by Pharrell) fails to shoehorn Skepta into Pharrell's bubbly funk universe. As for his lyrics, there is nothing coded about them, or their meaning: He raps exclusively about distrust and independence. He’s very much aware that London, and the world, will continue to exploit him and erase his individuality. This awareness is why he refuses to appear in pictures with fans or answer press emails in “Man.” It’s why he pulls way back, and samples Wiley’s call for peace in the middle of a battle (“Lyrics for lyrics, calm”) in “Lyrics.” He finds peace, if he finds it at all, in his roots: by remaining loyal to family and friends, by being appreciative of the past, and by incubating a future for his genre. Konnichiwa is as nakedly vulnerable Skepta has ever been, and it represents a tantalizingly wide-open door for grime. It’ll be our job as listeners to step through and discover what we’ve been missing. - Pitchfork.

Ltd. 400 copies This one shouts for itself: OG grime producer/engineer Boylan runs amok with a Devil mix of Logos’ Glass.Given a side to itself ‘cos basically nothing else can withstand its heat, Boylan reduces and amplifies Glass’ original shards of jungle breaks and scything mentasms with pensile application of drop forge bass and super wide, vaulted sound design, in the process turning it into some kind of petrified rave fulgurite. It’s quite possibly the most ferocious turn-up from the grime X hardcore X weightless nexus which has emerged in recent years, largely due to the efforts of Different Circles. One might call it a Different Circles anthem, but whatever you want to call it; this one’s massive.

Trends & Boylan wrote an anthem with Norman Bates. Easily the biggest Grime instrumental this year, Norman Bates has been played and rewoundtime and time again at all of the years biggest UK shows and clubs. On the flip we have individual tunes from the two producers. Boylan goes on anorchestral workout with clarinets and strings providing the catchy riffs alongside classic square waves on Shimmy, another heavyweight Boylantrack. Trends uses his signature robotic bass sounds matched with a dark moody choir on Octopus, a permanent freature in Slimzees sets this year.

Our 14th release takes us to the darker side of the sound. Boylan has been the unsung hero of our label over the years- engineering and mixing down the majority of our releases and becoming a real architect of the foundations of our sound. Following his work with Edgem and general ubiquity on London's stations over the last year or so, it was only natural that he and Spooky found themselves in the studio together. Earlier this year they brought "Peckham To Hackney" to the second Boxed 12" and we thought they needed a release of their own. This 10" is the product of it. Low Rider starts the process. A malevolent take on the West Coast walking bassline style, we signed it before it was even a track - just a 4am 8-bar loop, haze and sub. After listening to that sparse 20 seconds on repeat for a while, they brought muscle to the skeleton - DJ Quik in Peckham. All Black Winter, meanwhile, takes their sound in a much harsher direction. Growling saws, gutteral strings and a brief morse code arpeggio meet violent gunshot snares and Boylan's bass science. One for the 2am rideouts, the double drop at 2:40. Support from Slackk, Slimzee, Murlo, Soloman, Logos, Grandmixxer, Mr. Mitch, Trends.

Remixes by SHED / KOWTON / DREDD / BWANAUK production duo Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman aka Dusky drop 4 of the finest remixes from their Outer album campaign of last year on heavyweight white label vinyl.T. Williams’ cult grime alias Dread D alias and Livity Sound mainstay Kowton lend their hand to 2 heavyweight remixes for the Wiley collaboration ‘Sort it Out Sharon’ whilst the talents of Bwana and techno don shed take to the buttons on ‘Ingrid is a Hybrid’A legendary figure for his formative work on Jon E Cash’s Black Ops label around 2002 - 2006, Dread D has been bubbling back into focus over recent years through a string of strong releases on Local Action. On his remix, the versatile veteran gives Wiley’s freestyle a bashy, classic London grime refix.Having released his critically acclaimed ‘Utility’ LP on Livity Sound earlier this year, Bristol’s Kowton has been bringing together cutting-edge electronics and heavy club dynamics with a distinctly UK sensibility - and felt a perfect choice for the second remix.Rising Berlin-via-Toronto producer Bwana aka Nathan Micay has built up an impressive run of releases over the past couple of years for labels including Aus Music, Infinite Machine and somethinksounds. Most recently he released an acclaimed "retro-futuristic reimagining" of the Akira OST with LuckyMe via a special website. His ‘We’re All In This Together’ remix of ‘Ingrid Is A Hybrid’ – which sees him reunite with Dusky, having previously played alongside the London duo in Chicago last autumn – builds from subtle percussion to new levels of computerized bliss.Shed is Ostgut Ton and Modeselektor/50 Weapons affiliate René Pawlowitz, also known by his Head High and WK7 aliases and for his time behind the counter at Berlin’s legendary Hard Wax record store. With his version the techno maestro welds a dark sense of foreboding into ‘Ingrid’ while managing to retain the rave euphoria of the original.

Jammz came up studying grime, and in 2016 finds himself at the forefront of it. Born and bred in East London, Jammz started to make a name for himself on London’s radio circuit in 2014 and 2015, appearing regularly on Rinse FM, Radar Radio, NTS, Mode FM and BBC 1xtra and teaming up with both established DJs like Slimzee, Spooky, Bok Bok and Spyro and newcomers like Moleskin. His Hit Then Run EP became a cult classic: the title track was played regularly on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Noisey’s #3 grime track of 2015, and the remix was Sian Anderson’s #1 remix of the week six weeks on the spin. Subsequent singles ‘Final Warning’ and ‘London Living’ further established Jammz as one of grime’s best new hit-makers, while his live reputation is also quickly on the rise: he’s played Glastonbury, Eskimo Dance, Outlook, Night Slugs and Bestival, has headlined FWD>> and in March 2016 was the support act on Kano’s UK tour. Jammz has been supported heavily by Fader, Noisey, FACT, GQ, Mixmag, SBTV, MTV and more, and featured on the front cover of the Observer Music’s British MCs special. Following an instrumental 12” which sold out in four days, Warrior is the second EP on Jammz’s I Am Grime label. Intense and frustrated, it encapsulates life in London in 2016 and marks Jammz’s most complete and considered release to date. All tracks are also produced by Jammz, apart from ‘What’s Man Saying?’, produced by grime legend Ironsoul and featuring a guest verse by P Money.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
It’s been five years since his acclaimed debut ‘Severant’ and time has proved it prescient; its futuristic trap influence is now ubiquitous. ‘Slow Knife‘ seems to return to where ‘Severant’ left off, but with the intricate sound design of last year’s haunting EP ‘Assertion Of A Surrounding Presence’ subsumed into the compositions, making them more exacting and beautifully crafted. Between albums Kuedo has been working as a sound designer and composer for hire and the application of intent and widescreen rigour that commercial work requires has definitely found its way into the new album. ‘Slow Knife’ has the subtlety, ambition and pacing of a brilliant soundtrack - a sense of an album of scenes, that easily lends itself to an impressionistic narrative. But, as with ‘Severant’, the title suggests relationship unease, with the slow knife being a metaphor for the building resentment in any close relationship. ‘Slow Knife’ is almost two albums; the first half, according to Kuedo, invokes the seduction of the city, taking the music of Michael Mann’s ‘Manhunter’ as a cue, with the latter half being inspired by the bloody starscapes and voodoo wilderness of films such as ‘Angel Heart’, ‘Night Of The Hunter’ and more recently the ‘True Detective’ series. Both halves of the album are also in thrall to Mica Levi’s inspiring ‘Under The Skin’ soundtrack, especially in the turbulence of the mid-section. The songs of the albums first half are synthetic and seductive, a gelatinous veil with shades of the pseudo-sophisticated trance of Enigma, of all things, underpinned with dusky unsettling shadows and atmosphere. ‘In Your Sleep’, perhaps surprisingly, features the vocals of Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, who settles his dark, whispered vocals into the moonlit shadowy atmosphere. ‘Floating Forest’ is the first track to allow back some of Kuedo’s experimentation with the Southern rap template, which he explored before it became commonplace, with echoed drum splashes and a sinister repetitive motif, ending with a haunting growl. The second half of the album enters wilderness territory with ‘Approaching’s slow descending notes, before ‘Broken Fox - Black Hole’ throws the record into the cathartic darkness, as undulating chords play hide and seek with riotous reeds and scratchy strings grown from challenging collaborations with cello player Koenraad Ecker (from Lumisokea). ‘Breaking The Surface’ shivers and coils, before metal and strings dominate while ‘In Your Skin’ feels like being lost in a vast hinterland before ‘Warmer Light’ introduces some memories of sunshine, with its plucked bassline and spiralling dub. ‘Halogen Light’ opens with the sound of crickets and a clear piano, cleansing the soul before ‘Lathe’ brings things down to earth with a short, yet powerful coda.

Our 13th release marks a real return to Oil Gang roots. 2010 marked our _rst release, the dancehall-_ecked Spooky EP, "Murderer". Spooky has remained a close ally of the label over the years- we released another EP with him after that - 2013's Coolie Joyride- put out some remixes of it on a white label, and played nights with him all over London. We've saw him navigating the globe, 1Xtra residencies, US tours, Asia tours. It's 2016 now though, and that deserves another Spooky record on Oil Gang. Or two. Fiesta opens this double A sided 10" release - the raucous carnival side to Spooky's sound. Bashment air-horns, loads of sub, syncopated soca pressure. The B side takes a more languid approach- lilting reggae guitars and horns, Spooky's signature ‘Heys'. The EP encapsulates Spooky's soundsystem approach and heritage in one 10" release - There's been a real history of these Jamaican leaning Spooky tunes on Oil Gang over the years and long may they continue!. The EP is accompanied by a remix from girl of the moment Flava D for the biggest track from his album last year 'Peace, Love & Music'. Swindle is a multi instrumentalist, producer and DJ from London. He has self released his music as far back as 2006, and featured in many projects between then and his debut album that came via Mala’s Deep Medi in 2013. ‘Long Live The Jazz’ established Swindle on the global circuit as a DJ and Live Act. The follow up 'Peace Love & Music' in 2015 documented his global travel from London to LA, Cape Town to Tokyo and Shanghai to Glasgow. Featuring TC, Flowdan, Terri Walker and more, it landed with rave reviews, and the breakout track 'Mad Ting' feat JME became his most successful song to date. The spirit of this continues with Swindle's next project 'A Trilogy In Funk'. Three EPs, showing three sides to his tastes and talents. Part One is three tracks recorded while in Sao Paolo, Brazil with local musicians while on tour in September. Part Two is inspired by his roots in the London Grime scene, collaborating with veteran MCs D Double E and Ghetts. Part Three is something that his followers have long waited for, a straight up P-Funk project, recorded in LA. Across the three projects, they encompass styles that you normally couldn't pin to one artist, but Swindle's unmistakable energy powers through all of them. As always, he backs his musical depth with strong visuals, documenting the process of how these records came together, giving an insight into his process from the studio to the release. 2016 has seen him continue touring his live band across festivals like Glastonbury, Love Supreme, Boomtown and Shambala, while DJing alongside his Butterz label mates at their fabric residency in London and beyond.

Trying not to be confined and limited by genres. Something that is retraceable in the development of their productions.Influenced by the Los Angeles beats scene as well as the ever changing UK sound.Their own music can be described as spacious, with strong percussive details constantly contrasting the sluggish low-endClusters - Producer duo Know V.A. returns to Lowriders Recordings for their second release Clusters. Since their first EP O Horizon the guys have been growing in their production to a more mature and daring sound.Kicking off the new Dazzle vinyl only series, the duo set out to create tracks that would fit the exclusivity of a limited printed vinyl. After several studio sessions in November 2015 the producer duo presents Clusters.Determined to push their own boundaries musically, they used a different approach in comparison to their prior releases. The three tracks originated from a sample/synth pack, specially designed for this EP. The Clusters EP should be seen as one track, solely divided by the track names. The release implies a dark and gritty experience, but excluding any aggressiveness.Clusters EP already got some early support from Mssngno, Ryan Hemsworth, Mumdance, Ivy Lab, DJ Shadow, Noisia, Om Unit, Desto and others. This release contains dancefloor orientated bass music.1. Caves: A dark hollow track clouded by its own reverb and delay. The thunderous kicks and lightning infused snares give Caves an electric feel to energize the dancefloor.2. Echoes: Is the echo of Caves. The track is stripped from its dynamics. Leaving behind the bare bones on which the synths are put to a new use. Taking the listener into a wormhole filled with bass and eerie sounding synths.3. Clusters: All the previously mentioned elements are put together in the title-track Clusters. Creating an entire new entity. For those who like to diversify their sets with half-tempo rhythms filled with a lot of bass and hypnotising melodies, Clusters is the absolute winner.

Leibniz takes no prisoners for his return to shtum. His new EP sees the Leipziger by choice in best form. Harsh but fair. ''Grind'' is a masterpiece in the matter of building up tension with only few but proper elements. Amen to that drumming and when the strings come in the dance floor is probably already burning. ''Foolish'' is no less effective with its ultimate kick drum action and the way the pads are manipulated. Romantic Leibniz. On the flipside you get the vibrant ''This Is'' in two versions. The ''Brecht Mix'' screams RAVE in capital letters with the bleepy synths and hard snare drum while the ''Scuff Mix'' trawls through dark and unearthy Techno territories. No-nonsense music. Keysound Recordings begin 2016 with a grimey addition to the family: an EP from grime don JT the Goon. Fresh from his critically acclaimed debut album on Oil Gang, he unleashes four versions of the “Oil on Ice” riddim. How the tracks came very near to being forever “lost dubs” is a tale of crossed wires and aural infections that thankfully has a happy ending. The track made its debut on the Keysound Rinse FM show in November 2013 when the then emerging producer Rabit, passed through the show to make his debut. Re-listening to the set over and over again, Blackdown made enquiries about signing “Oil on Ice,” only to hear it might already have a home. Two years passed and periodically, often in far flung locations with epic vistas, Blackdown could not help but notice that this most infectious aural ear-worm, “Oil on Ice”, would wiggle its way into his mind’s ear. Again and again its curvaceous melody would appear on the edge of his consciousness. Enquiries were made again and turns out, the dub had remained unreleased. Three VIP versions of the riddim were commissioned for the label, so that “Oil…” could be played in the camps’ rolling 130 bpm sets and a catalog number was duly assigned. JT the Goon was an early member of Slew Dem Crew (Chronik, Waifer, Rage etc). He co-produced ‘Gunman Riddim’, not only a classic grime instrumental but a track that popularised the Korg Triton’s “amsfeedbacklead” preset – the sound that has since become a grime staple, almost as recognisable as Wiley’s eski click and Musical Mob’s ‘Pulse X’ bass hits. His debut album “King Triton” dropped autumn 2015 on Oil Gang.

A year in the making, Lionheart is the fearless new record from Crazylegs’ smiling assassin Ziro – the first artist to release on our label way back in 2012, a meticulous producer revered among his peers, now confidently pushing forward with a sound like nobody else. Pooling an array of influences ranging from early days selling drum & bass in a record store in his hometown, formative production forays into dubstep and finding his groove in techno, a growing interest in rap and grime have pulled his beatmaking into an alien place in the last couple of years. Coupled with a longstanding knack for intense atmospherics and ice-cold synth lines, you end up with perhaps the most striking record we’ve ever put out. This is where Ziro embodies the essence of Crazylegs – a drive to experiment and an ambition to deliver the unexpected. Title track Lionheart sets out the mission statement in no uncertain terms – a breathless six and a half minutes of thunderous, fractured drums and shimmering trance riffs. Strafe brings Belfast madman Bloom into the fray, trademark hydraulic percussion creating a wonderful hybrid. London City Warlord Riko Dan spits a bag of violence on Dun Talk, a move into more straightforward rap beat territory. Distance provides a moment of blissful calm before Rapture closes the record with its grimiest workout. Lionheart is the sound of an incredibly talented producer marking out his territory – cinematic but still primed to pummel dancefloors. It arrives October 30th on digital and a 12” picture sleeve vinyl edition shortly after.

Rabit should need little introduction by this stage, having captured imaginations worldwide with his deconstructed, otherworldly take on instrumental grime. The four track EP works with a palette of chopped vocals, icy fragments of eski synths, rude squarewave bass and jagged percussion, contorting each component into brilliantly original, sparse and hard- hitting compositions. The release is due to land on a hand-stamped 12"white label this November.

Slackk first came to the attention of most with an EP of roughneck UK house on Numbers, before a series of more emotive, melody-driven records on Local Action and Unknown to the Unknown saw him emerge as one of the most unique and influential artists working in the peripheries of grime - taking the genre's hallmarks and audio tattoos but placing them in a context that owed as much to Eastern mood pieces and the complex melodies of classic jazz records, hinting at other key influences on Slackk's music. His debut album Palm Tree Fire was a particular success: Resident Advisor calling it a "beautiful glimpse into the mind of an under-appreciated producer”.Slackk has since expanded the breath and honed the details of his music through a pair of EPs on R&S - first Backwards Light, a record that expanded on the themes of his previous releases while taking in the label's legacy of groundbreaking acid and techno, and then on the more abrasive Aviary. A Little Light, his first album for the label, is his most idiosyncratic and personal release yet. Partially inspired by the upcoming birth of his first child, this album sees Slackk drop the tempo to an r&b 90bpm crawl on tracks like ‘Spring Mist' and ‘Zip Me Up', with the newfound space between his drums allowing his delicate melodies to grow and spiral like never before. Although the LP looks forward, it's also nostalgic: ‘Old Petchy Shows' is a reference to the last embers of UK Funky, arguably the final chapter of UK dance music to rely on traditional physical hubs like pirate radio and record stores, while ‘Paper Santos' and ‘Reasons' nod to early 2000s grime and house, both influences on Slackk in different ways. Elsewhere, 'So Far, The Sea' and ‘And The Sun' are two of the most outright emotional songs that Slackk has written to date. Although there are clear reference points dotted throughout A Little Light, more than anything - following several years of honing and developing a trademark sound - it simply sounds like Slackk; equal parts nostalgic and optimistic, delicate and clumsy, with an atmosphere that could either be sunset or sunrise depending on your vantage point. It's an album filled with uncertainty and individuality, utterly unconcerned with what's happening outside of its own world, and there's only one artist around who could have written it.

Mumdance & Logos cut deep into the uncanny valley between grime, noise and ambient musics with theshockingly diverse Weightless Volume. 2, volleying five tracks from label fammo FiS, Shapednoise, Inkke, Sharp Veins and Yamaneko, plus the duo’s own, frankly massive Cafe Del Mar zinger. With the label still hot from the Mumdance & Logos Presents Different Circles mix CD, this EP touches base with five new artists whose individual sounds have been crucial to the make-up of Different Circles’ club sets and on Mumdance and Logos’ respective Rinse FM shows ever since their label’s inception. You couldn’t ask for a stronger indictment of where Mumdance and Logos are right now than Cafe Del Mar; an outstanding piece of work stacking lush modular synth pads to the rafters and socked with cavernous, inverted kicks, forming the closest you’ll ever get to a weightless sunset anthem from these two original nuttahs.Trust their bandmate in The Sprawl, Shapednoise, to twyst hard away from that sound with the invasivecontortion of Deep Core Consciousness, which feels like the first efforts of communication from a neural network of heavy machinery, and is proceeded by the impeccably smooth contours and thizzing glassy licks of Yamaneko’s Shadow Temple. On the B-side, Kiwi producer FiS follows his exclusive contribution to Mumdance’s Fabriclive 80 mix with a deviant diffusion of the elements in Angels Of The Water Table, while Glasgow’s Inkke shoots from the hip with the blinding hi-wire hooks of Pioneer on a boisterous, beatless grime flex, and Alabama, USA’s Sharp Veins holds a bittersweet suspense to the edge with his dizzying mini string symphony,Already Bones.

P Jam has had production/features from Grime A listers such as, Wretch 32, Jme, Kano, D Double E and former label mates Big Narstie and Skepta to name a few. Now he’s back with his third instalment on Hardrive. Pepper Pot is a Grime Dancehall infused track. It has a feel like P Jam took himself to King Jammy’s studio and turned out this absolute banger. Already getting a lot of pirate and underground club rotation. P jam called upon Champion for this combination for track entitled Chalice, which leans more towards the studio one sound, and also reminiscent of the early days of DMZ & FWD. Dublin born A/V duo CLU release four track ‘Mood' EP, set for release through Gobstopper Records on 18th November 2016. Dublin born musician Sean Cooley and visual artist Kevin Freeney formed CLU in 2011 as a way to play music and showcase artwork simultaneously to their friends in venues and galleries across the city. Growing up in the 1990s, they witnessed the birth of mass produced 3D computer animations and the conceptual god complexes that came with the Internet. These two very apparent influences made them immerse themselves in the ever intertwining mediums of sound and vision, giving CLU a very unique approach to their live AV shows. Influences of trance, R&B, videogame and film scores, grime and industrial permeate Cooley's productions, which bubble with multitudes of synths and maintain a focus on bass driven twists. Visually, Freeney engages in a surrealist depth that skips on the brink between digital film and generative animations. This connection between the two forms a symbiotic chemistry that aims to bridge the gap between the white cubed galleries of visual art and the dark basements of electronic music to create soaring galactic oddities.

Yamaneko follows the critically-acclaimed Pixel Wave Embrace with a new album of bleak compositions inspired by keygen music and the deep sea. One of electronic music's most individual voices, Yamaneko operates on the peripheries of instrumental grime, but is equally inspired by new age, video game soundtracks and Drexciya's aquatic techno. His debut album Pixel Wave Embrace has already proved influential and is considered a cult classic, praised highly by Dummy, Dazed, Resident Advisor, FACT, Tiny Mixtapes and Fader, and played in sets by Mumdance, Objekt, Kassem Mosse, Peverelist and more. Project Nautilus is bleaker, darker and more inward-looking than Pixel Wave Embrace, heavily inspired by the simple, often melancholic music made by keygen composers. It's not an easy or inviting album, but it's filled with as much subtle detail as it is blank space, resulting in one of the most haunting electronic records of the year. The first edition of Project Nautilus comes packaged in a card inner sleeve and screen-printed PVC outer sleeve.

For the A2, the debut vinyl appearance of AS.IF KID. Mashman Riddim Pt.2 recalls the technical ruffige of prime Plasticman or Mark One whilst pushing his sound in to new hi-definition territory. OG grime don JT The Goon unleashes his long awaited slate Flux Capacitor, a staple of Oil Gang's DJ sets. Fairlight-era flutes orbit a classic JT bassline for pure emotional, end-of-night vibes. Silk Road Assassins release two of their most long sought-after tracks — ‘Deadcell’ and ‘3M Kunai’. ‘Deadcell’ — a bittersweet five minutes of abstract, trap euphoria — first emerged at the back end of 2014 and has since taken on mythical status online, with entire forum threads dedicated to rumours of its prospective release, while ‘3M Kunai’ was the beat chosen by Chicago rapper Mikey Dollaz on early 2016 collaborative single, ‘Commas’. Comprised of three producers; long-time Coyote signees Chemist and Tom E. Vercetti, and close friend Lovedr0id, Silk Road Assassins have taken cues from a shared appreciation of hip-hop beat-makers, Chicago drill and UK grime to create their own shadowy, cloaked, dystopian take on the music. Functional enough to work in or away from the club, their music has made Silk Road Assassins the defining artists in their field, with support from Kuedo, Om Unit, Commodo, Plastician and countless others suggesting that they are very much producers of the future.

Cellar, the second solo EP from NA (Daniel Pineda of Nguzunguzu) on Fade to Mind, is a kinetic and brooding journey through the ominous side of club music, a personal vision of dystopia and angst. With 5 tracks that showcase NA’s wide-ranging musical influences, the record provides a personal manifesto for Pineda’s vision of club music for darker times. His previous releases as NA and Nguzunguzu have received support from Pitchfork, FACT Mag, Resident Advisor, Fader, Dummy Mag, Red Bull Music Academy, Pigeons & Planes as well as radio play from Benji B, Diplo and B Traits on Radio 1, as well as Tom Ravenscroft and Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music. Texturally, all tracks on Cellar Theme are drawn together by aggressive metallic manipulations, crisp percussion and devastating low-end. Highlighting NA’s technical skills as a producer, there is a careful balance between distortion and direct sound, resulting in highly atmospheric yet club-ready experiments. Thematically, each track is imagined as a different room in a dungeon complex with it’s own distinct challenges and dangers to dismantle. Evoking both pain and pleasure, each discovery may lead to a new wonder, or descends into a fresh horror. Though not his first solo project, Cellar Theme has allowed NA to follow certain individual impulses, hone in and craft his own brooding sound. “The Claw spawned me to make the drum kit and the MPC sequences that formed the basis for Cellar Theme, which was the jump off for this whole record concept,” says Pineda, referring to the collaborative live act featuring himself, Asma Maroof (½ of Nguzunguzu), Ezra Rubin (Kingdom) and Ashland Mines (Total Freedom). A summation of his influences and an insight into his personal sonic environment, Cellar Theme sets the tone for Fade to Mind’s 2016 releases and a follow up to his previous Xtreme Tremble EP.

‘Island Wave’ opens the release and uses a sonic palette reminiscent of vintage era Joker production. Simultaneously tough and breezy, the riddim undulates as the titles suggests and displays the duo’s ability to evoke emotions, of childlike hope and wonder as they explore a genre dominated by a macho aesthetic. The following cuts are crafted more pointedly to serve as dance floor weapons. With 'Barbaric' serving as a screw face engager and the title track ‘Knights of Ren’ coming straight out of Plasticman set before Richie Hawtin had him change his name to Plastician. Lemz and Hi5 Ghost jump on the remix to anchor the release pulling the riddim into a proud grime banger. This is the second Kapsize release from Asa & Sorrow who were last seen flying the flag with the 'Legendary EP'. An unforeseen nod to the past, present and future of grime music, Rinse's latest EP brings together three artists each operating within completely different spheres across six tracks of abstract, future-facing grime. It sees Maniac, one of the genre's early kingpin beatmakers, make his long-awaited return to releasing proper by joining forces with Maxsta - himself an MC with plenty to prove following his breakthrough anthem 'East London Is Back' in 2011 - and mystery element, Tri-Angle Records producer Boothroyd, on the '100 Problems' EP.Although an unlikely combination on the surface, their time in the studio has bore more than just impressive results - this is an EP that challenges as much as it dazzles. On opener '100 Problems', Maniac's influence is felt first as sci-fi zaps and pulses fizz around a grizzly, low-end beat while Maxsta attacks every bar, the bit firmly back between his teeth. Second track 'No Retreat' sees Boothroyd come to the fore with his wildly off-beat, atmospheric haze and staggered, cosmic FX allowing Maxsta's lyricism the space needed to take centre stage, while 'Green Light' seems to bridge the gap between the two producers' vividly disparate styles. The colloquially themed 'Mare Street Dick Head' - a reference to the street in Hackney, East London - is effectively beat-less, working a minimalist template to the extreme that again allows Maxsta to impress with deeper, sorrowful lyricism, while 'Hood Pharmacist' sees the MC up the tempo over jittery and fractured weightlessness. Final track 'Local Spitter' sees the trio flip the script for a final time, with Maxsta's words cutting through swirling, HD melodies, glossy textures and a thick-edged bass lean.

The launch of his label, Today, Tomorrow continues the evolution of London based musician T.Williams. Over his 10 years as a DJ, producer, remixer and radio presenter T has proven to be an eclectic and exceptional curator of new and established talent from around the globe, across all manner of styles. Emerging as one of grime's seminal producers at a young age, T turned to house music in the late 00s, incorporating his influences of jungle, grime and garage and stitching them into his own 4x4 template. The Today, Tomorrow label venture continues where T's own journey began: with a limited edition vinyl release that contains 4 previously unreleased tracks from the vaults of West London grime legend Jon E Cash - T's former cohort in the renowned Black Ops grime crew. Jon E Cash is one of the key members and founding fathers on the Black Ops crew, focused on making sublow music, a particular pocket of the overarching grime movement, specific to West London; taking in influences from UK Garage, Jungle, Reggae and Hip Hop. Alongside, Charmzy, D-2Real, Chaps, Sly and Copone; as well as T.Williams under his former moniker, Dread.D; Black Ops was responsible for some of the genre anthems of the early 00s; and although he never really went away, Jon E Cashsteps firmly back into the limelight with 4 previously unreleased smashers from circa 2002, the prime time of the grime and sublow movement, featuring "Gangster", "War Bashie", "Cash Combo" and "Sen U Rita". This is the concept Today, Tomorrow revolves around seeking out innovation and new movements, bridging and bending genre, history and territorial boundaries. At a time when the worlds of urban and electronic music swirl ever closer, T and his label Today, Tomorrow is primed to deliver an organic point of intersection.

Release:2016 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Joey LaBeija has earned himself the reputation of an underground club music deity in his native town of New York City. The Bronx-bred producer/DJ is revered for his rhythmic assaults on sound systems: combining a celebration of his Puerto Rican heritage (i.e. Big Pun and Wisin Y Yandel) with his love for the more extreme/experimental corners of electronic music (from Bjork to friends, Rabit and Lotic). As a fourth generation House of LaBeija emissary, Joey is less interested in plainly referencing the traditional sound of ballroom and vogue, but instead seeks out new pathways to further immerse listeners into his personal experience. Shattered Dreams, Joey's first proper body of work, marks a bold step forward in this artistic inquiry. On Shattered Dreams, we hear Joey pouring his darkest time as an adult into the music: a single year full of life losses amidst the walls of an unforgiving metropolis. From start to finish, it is a story told through the sprawl of daydreamt melodies, amorphous noise resembling the multi-appendage clatter of insects, and tattered beds of abrasive percussion. Much like his style of playing live, there is no single set genre as Shattered Dreams winds forward, instead he mines various stylistic cues - the upbeat stutter step of either Timbaland or that of grime (“Over” and “Joey's Inferno”), for instance - until revealing the tender, reverberating echoes of sounds unfound beneath the breaking sediment. This album is a hard barrel roll left, away from his well-secured club stature. It is, instead, an intrepid dive into the pain of mind. While Shattered Dreams was debuted by The Fader as a stream-only mix last August (making FACT's “Best of the Year” list and receiving high praise in Mixmag's November issue), Purple Tape Pedigree is proud to be assigned the responsibility of officially releasing the album with tracks split and re-touched to utmost dynamic clarity by the masterful Rashad Becker. This is a new beginning, as well as the most ideal way for PTP to start a new year.

With our first release of 2016, we welcome one of South London's _nest, Dullah Beatz, with his EP "Ballys On". Known to the label for a while, Dullah has been around since Grime started but the availability of a lot of his beats has been sparse. So after a guest appearance on our first album, JT The Goon's "King Triton," we're proud to present Dullah's most substantial release yet. On the A side for the 12th release on Oil Gang, the orchestral minimalism of the title track gives way to the Indian scales of "Time," both of them full of sub and menace. Then on the B side, there's a track called... "Oil Gang". This was Dullah's choice, we're not just going on an ego trip. The echoes of the label's recent styles are there though, a JT style flute riding gunshot hats and amsfeedback. The last track, Floating, rounds up the EP with a bit of tribal space and steel drums riding Dullah's inimitable style. This is the first time theres been a proper Dullah Beatz statement on vinyl and we're really happy it gets to be us at Oil Gang that got to do it.

Tom E. Vercetti is the kind of talent that gets signed immediately, no hesitation or questions asked; such was the strength of his original demos sent to Coyote Records this time last year. The young producer’s biggest waves to date have been made remixing Last Japan’s Harca for Coyote, and his Silk Road Assassins project with Chemist and Lovedr0id that has borne releases on Gobstopper Records’ piece edit series and the mighty Planet Mu. Now Vercetti’s time to fully announce himself on the solo front comes with his debut 12”, the Future Perfect EP, featuring a couple of those stunning original demos alongside some work fresh out of the studio. The record is awash with widescreen celestial melodies; not least on the anthemic lead track Future Perfect, where synths dazzle like star systems above the broad physicality of his basslines. Experimenting with melody forms such a integral part of Vercetti’s production process, and they continue to take centre stage on Fugitive and Infinite Plane, harnessing MssingNo or Mr. Mitch levels of emotiveness. Where his synths forge fantastical soundscapes, the beats keep you moving, with structures that coalesce elements of grime and hiphop in the heaviest possible way.

JT The Goon is a grime legend, but you might not know that. An early member of Slew Dem crew, he produced 'Gunman Riddim', one of grime's all-time classics and the genre's first popular use of the Korg Triton's amsfeedbacklead preset, which became one of its trademark sounds. After some time in the wilderness, JT returned in 2012 with a newfound hunger, releasing free EPs, sending music to DJs that orbited London's Boxed clubnight like Oil Gang and Slackk, and finding fans in contemporary producers like Murlo and Rabit (both of whom have collaborated with JT.) JT's music combines grime's raw power with the rich melodies that he's mastered in his 10+ years developing as a producer. It evokes classic Westerns and martial arts movies without ever losing sight of the fact that it's first and foremost a grime record, and as well as the amsfeedbacklead that JT helped popularise, draws from a range of Korg Triton sounds that are at the genre's heart. Equally respected by grime veterans and its new breed, this is one of the genre's best operating with authority.

Taking a walk on the modern side of Grime Street, La Vie C'est Facile crosses over and fuses different styles with electro, instrumental hip-hop, bass music, techno and jungle into a brooding masterpiece of disjointed and distorted beats. Coming with a 5-track EP, the DJ/producer duo of La Vie C'est Facile drapes a futuristic industrial atmosphere within their music, taking plenty of the elements of Grime and pushing those boundaries to bring something that defies categorization, all through their own inspirit filter. Their composition approach sounds like streetwise music for the year 3000, creating a hugely interesting and singular piece of work. The ironically titled Fun Zone EP starts with ‘Racer Z' which drops metallic and ghetto ambiences, breathing in an anxious and claustrophobic spirit with a wooden, chunky bass —the result is a contemporary hard-edged feeling of the Biel/Bienne lifestyle. ‘Casino' elevates the mood with a graceful twinkling melody, gently melded with grimey beat patterns and snapping claps and snares on a heavy sub bass. On the flip side, ‘Adrenaline' pushes its way across terror and horror soundscapes all with a menacing bass prowl, while ‘White Cobra' injects twisted experimental sounds on incredible beats. ‘Europium' finishes the EP, mixing asian and cold melodies with criss-crossing drums deservedly head-pleasing and emotionally stirring. With Fun Zone EP, La Vie C'est Facile showcases a forward-thinking and fearless debut!

Having recently partnered with Bill Kouligas to relaunch his Lost Codes imprint as Codes, Visionist takes a defining step forward with the release of his PAN debut album, ‘Safe’.The South London artist born Louis Carnell broke during a period of experimentation in UK music when, with the disintegration of the dubstep scene, emerging producers began looking to juke and Chicago house for inspiration. A pair of EPs on Lit City Trax (and a collaboration with Fatima Al Qadiri) in 2013 and ‘14 introduced Visionist’s minimalist take on fractured R&B and liquid grime, establishing him as a leading voice in new-wave UK soundsystem culture. On ‘Safe’, Visionist sculpts and extends that signature into new terrain and makes his most personal statement yet. Distilling his influences down to a sparse palette of manipulated folk, pop and R&B acapellas, icy synths, and metallic drum samples, he plays off ever-present anxiety and his own battle not to let it overwhelm him. “Comfort, protection, salvation—this is what we search for,” he says. “We are taught that a life of no worries is better for us, and therefore we try to create one that is ‘Safe.’”But while safe as a musical concept implies conformity, ‘Safe’ as an artistic statement is anything but. At a moment when the UK scene, once known for innovation, has settled into rehashing old tropes, Visionist continues to propel his sound into more experimental territory. The album traces the arc of an anxiety attack, from its onset through to recovery. Following the stately discord of brief opener “You Stayed,” the grimy, ballistic assault of “Victim” sends its targets diving into mirrored corners. “I’ve Said” is a brutal, almost militant advance, its sound cutting in and out as though transmitted via shortwave radio. “Too Careful To Care” trades in skittering paranoia, with the soporific “Sleep Luxury” closing out affairs.

Rinse are proud to present the debut full-length album by London producer Faze Miyake. Four years since the firey swagger of his debut single ‘Take Off’ and its follow-up Second Six exploded onto dancefloors, Faze Miyake is a definitive and thrilling realisation of his signature sound. A sharp, vividly rendered club record, it casts his characteristic sonic traits in shocking hi-def, with disorienting hi-hat whirls and string stabs steeped in ever-present, body-shuddering sub-bass - a dazzling, dreamlike vision of 21st century sound system music.

Dark0, an artist well-versed in the art of producing grand and cinematic, melody-laced beats, debuts for Rinse with both acclaim and crucially, momentum. First fully recognised by his self-released “ZERO” mixtape and a sparkling debut for Visionist’s vital Lost Codes imprint back in 2014, his work is a testament to focused, self-fulfilling vision and the contexts within which he hopes it be judged. Although the music still fits best within the blurry, ever-changing world of instrumental grime, his approach to sampling, melody, texture and composition set him apart from his contemporaries. In short, he’s an artist operating firmly in his own space. ‘Solace’ itself, a five track ode to a multitude of themes - beauty, heartbreak, love, anguish - is a gorgeous introduction to his producer mindset. Melodies shimmer, pitched-up vocals glisten and 808 licks add power and bite in a shiny, picture-book world of an EP. The dreamy, thugged-out heartache on lush opener ‘Abrasion’ is a nod to tracks like the cult ‘Sweet Boy Pose, while the thinly-veiled bounce and playful melodies on ‘Fuchsia’ are attune to richer, more measured sound design - the sort that could comfortably provide a foil for the next generation of US rappers. The markedly robust ‘Spiral’ sees Dark0 make a fleeting return to his grime-centric roots with gritty kicks and razor sharp claps offset by a succession of sweet, swirling melodies in a marriage of rough and smooth, while the stunning, buoyant calm of ‘The Past’ draws Solace to a close in a fitting, self-reflective mood. There is also room for US rap producer starlet Suicideyear to turn a dark, sorcerous hand to ‘Abrasion’, reversing the melodies and flipping the bassline to prove just how fluid and multi-contextual Dark0’s sound really is.

Visionist resets his Lost Codes imprint as a new PAN sublabel, Codes, with a killer, collaborative grime/techno collage by Acre and Filter Dread.Marking the first time either producer has collaborated properly, they prove a vital pairing in equilibrium between industrial techno engines, body-scanning UK bass tones and gritty, diffuse urban-gothic atmosphere.Upfront, ‘Drumz34’ burrows in with viral 8-bit squiggle and squashed subs before ‘Flash Speed’ arches up a skeletal, mutant 8-bar onslaught and ‘Trashed’ bruks out the toms on a swooping halfstep techno flex.Down below, they come with a fiercely darkside droog raver called ‘Life’, whipping reversed drums, bass and mentasms with very canny Wendy Carlos vibe, whilst ‘Unknown’ deals in guttural, monotone functions, and ‘Blood Artist’ pulls coarse lo-fi drums and electronics into sharp focus on an elegantly wasted sino-garage skip.
