Phase Fatale - Redeemer
Phase Fatale
Redeemer
LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Hospital Productions)
20,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Redeemer is the brutally seductive debut album by Phase Fatale, a key player in the recent charge of EBM and post punk-informed industrial techno infecting ‘floors from his home city, NYC to his DJ residency at Berghain, Berlin. In Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions, Phase Fatale finds a fitting home for his personalised brand of clinical, rictus rhythm programming and searing synth and guitar lines, adding a vital streak of black and blue electric energy to the legendary label in its 20th year of cultish operation. In seven parts (and a trio of extended Silent Servant mixes due to come), Redeemer follows the direct, jagged lines of his 12”s for Jealous God and Unterton to a deeply personal realisation of weaponised sonics, upholding a strong tradition of techno as a prophetic exercise or ritual to gird dancers and listeners for the onset of future war. It presents Phase Fatale as an ultimate emissary of electronic violence and domination in the process, steeling the limbic system and muscle memory thru a fine-tuned disciplinarian approach to pharmacokinetics and biomechanics. Picking from the leather-bound cadaver of industrial dance music past, Phase Fatale reanimates his influences with pointillist precision and unapologetic force. Alloying muscular bass and metallic percussion with wire-combed 16th note synthlines and a barbed perimeter of guitar distortion, his sound can be heard as a metaphorical representation of holding your line against the attrition of a degenerated present. Each track dances concisely around the 5 minute mark, unfolding a series of densely packed and subtly rendered minimalist/maximalist structures. The shuddering tension of Spoken Ashes opens with banks of rotted chorales against a coalface of hacking stabs, establishing a pent vibe that vacillates precariously thru the adrenalised battery of Operate Within, to the clenched funk of Human Shield and the bombed-out, Alberich-alike Interference, seeming to resolve slightly with the supple roll of Order of Severity, before Beastbottoms out into immolating synth distortion, and Redeemer brings up the rear with a coolly-tempered, stoic form of industrial ecstasy.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
First ever vinyl edition of Justin Broadrick’s crushing industrial turns as JK Flesh for Hospital Productions, combining the Suicide Estate and Antibiotic Armageddon releases for a greyscale spectrum of brutalist techno / abyssal acid dub / tramadol tribalism / noxious noise textures that’s highly recommended if you’re intoRegis, Birmingham at night, Kareem...It’s an unflinchingly bleak representation of the world described in hard edged techno and shot thru with moments of affective, synthy pathos. In sonic and literal tone, the record forms a stark reflection on Justin K Broadrick Brummie stomping grounds, using demolished tower blocks as cues for some of the album’s most affective moments, such as the wrecking ball assault of Bayley Tower [New Mix], the rubbled rolige of Stoneycroft Tower, or the ‘marish zumby techno lurch of Bromford Bridge Estate, and all in a way that surely dovetails with the perceptions of anyone who has lived in a built up British area, or anywhere else with lots of concrete and little sunlight. The other half of the tracks are taken from and titled in reference to Antibiotic Armageddon - the inevitable point when pill-gobbling citizens of the world are no longer protected against old viruses, and new ones. The tone of these cuts is understandably bleak af, too. Tamiflu dry-wretches a windswept passage of bummed-out dub techno breaks, where Squalene [New Mix] glumly follows suit with the clammy synth malaise of Ethylene Glycol and the knee-buckled crawler Thimerosal, which sounds like one of his Godflesh tracks in the process of terrifying itself to death.

The extended mixes single of Phase Fatale’s debut full-length album on Hospital Productions takes three of the most dancefloor-ready songs from Redeemer into abstracted, surreal and uncharted territory aimed for unlit, claustrophobic chambers. Aided by Silent Servant with additional production, together Hayden Payne and Juan Mendez transform “Order Of Severity,” “Operate Within,” and “Spoken Ashes” further down the machine. With more percussion and editing, they tear apart and lengthen the tracks through temporal space. The Redeemer (Extended Mixes) 12” will be released simultaneously alongside the full-length album, adding yet another dimension into Payne’s own universe of the degenerated present.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Utterly destructive and heart-wrenching power noise and catharsis from the don gorgon of Hospital Productions, making his first album confession since the release of the stunning Frozen Niagara Falls.Taking almost 40 minutes to spell out a litany of ills that mark up as classic, pain-saturated Prurient in contrast with the more layered, nuanced narrative and more complex production values of his last album, the set boots off with the infernal backdraft and flagellating vox of the album’s most succinct piece, Let Your Mind Free (Whip The Corpse). Sharp blasts of noise distortion conceal a forlorn Fernow vocal, like that classic Lynchian conceit of obscuring dialogue at the most crucial moment, perversely enhancing narrative through obstruction. It’s a brilliant, disturbing, opener.Sore chord progressions and those same distanced vox crushed by needling distortion fill the nine minutes of Before Rain Becomes Snow with much emotional impact; revealing a sort of disturbed and buried Shoegaze appeal that sounds like a Grouper x Prurient recording session from another dimension. However, the album’s most captivating tract comes with the gaping black holer, In The Ruins of My Brother - where the distortion dissipates to the edges, allowing vast blooming bass flares and slithering high registers to wrap around the neck with a spacious, full spectrum dominance that recalls Prurient’s Pleasure Ground classic, before Red Poppy Laughter slips back into an opiated sort of naval-gazing noise bliss.

The maxi single counter part to the first official full length album from Silent Servant and features three extended, twisted, functional mutilations of tracks from the Negative Fascination full length. Juan Mendez has achieved international acclaim as a DJ and is one of the founding producers of the infamous and highly influential Sandwell District label. Long-time followers will feel the effects of a die cast over a decade of precision and dedication to underground minimalist electronic music. Mendez blends his previously stated interpretations of early post-punk, filtered through the monolithic works of Basic Channel with his own progressively nihilistic vision of Industrial. He utilizes a relentless and uncompromising mastery of hard-as-nails sequencer techno at the forefront with dystopian atmospherics filling the void. Negative Fascination bridges disparate factions on ideological grounds, regardless of sound in the age of mutation.

Marking six years of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement’s cultish, elemental output, Dominick Fernow (Prurient) gives the project’s first ever release a vinyl pressing for the first time, coiling up two extended tracts of impure, unnatural gloom ranking amongst his most cherished works. When RSE was first conceived with Fallen Leaves Camouflaged Behind Tropical Flowers in 2011, the project was shrouded in a veil of mystery which left many fiends guessing to its provenance - it seemed too far reduced to be identified as Fernow’s work, but also didn’t easily resonate with anyone of Hospital Productions’ usual suspects, instead holding a unique line of stygian slow techno that sounded like some our bleakest, febrile fantasies come to life.Soon enough RSE’s creator and navigator was indeed revealed to be Fernow, and the project became regarded among his most prized golems by those in the know, not least because it was starkly defined in contrast to his myriad other pseudonyms - Vatican Shadow, Prurient, Christian Cosmos, Force Publique Congo, and so on - by dint of its perceived restraint and glowering minimalism.Perhaps because of that stringent, meditative asceticism, the hypnotic grip of RSE has remained undiminished and perhaps as strong as ever on this new vinyl edition, where the Predator heartbeat and keening tonal groans of Life Would Transform sound more pensive and narcotically effective than ever, and the the borderland industrial chug and clag of Skull Covered In Moss seems to be seated deeper into its dank gloom, emulating a location recording of a burial-by-mud in some godforsaken no-man’s-land, with lurking parakeets and mechanical birds awaiting their turn on your soon-to-be carrion.

Following on from that hugely sought-after Green Graves issue by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, Hospital Productions re-examine a longstanding tradition of industrial ambient music on this exceptional collaboration between two of the label’s most consistently innovative, highly absorbing producers.Originally released in a private press run of handmade tapes, the collaboration was made in person with both Alberich and Lussuria making use of Digital synths in homage to that distinctly European scene of the mid 90’s that combined hardcore Industrial textures with Ambient pulses. It’s a sound you’ll be familiar with if you’ve immersed yourself in the most unnervingly quiet sections of the last few Prurient albums, building a kind of futuristic soundscape situated somewhere between David Lynch, Kevin Drumm and a more dystopian variant of Brad Fiedel’s distinctive soundtrack to The Terminator.Alberich’s instinct for harsh propulsive rhythms is here tempered by Lussuria’s weird topography, the digital rendering adding a kind of artificial foundation quite removed from the throbbing earthiness you’d find on a hardware session. Instead, the more linear trajectory of so many dark Ambient excursions is replaced with a constantly shifting landscape, veering from an oddly displaced vocal narrative into pounded, crumbling rhythms at some points, while those sinking subbass sands keep things resolutely atmospheric for the duration. There are no concessions to that blackened aesthetic here, if you were into Green Graves or want to immerse yourself in one of the most brutally atmospheric albums you’ll hear this year, we urge you to check it out.

One of Prurient’s most captivating raids on the borderlands of power noise and symphonic doom rears its furious head once again for this epic gatefold reissue on Hospital Productions, 10 years on from its original release on double tape and then as a single vinyl pressing for the legendary Load Records in 2007.Pleasure Ground stands as a key part of Prurient’s golden quadrant alongside The History Of Aids (2002), Black Vase (2005) and Cocaine Death (2008), its immolating rage renders Fernow at an early crest of his energies, consolidating the hi-pitch intensity and bile of his idols, Whitehouse, with the majestic, meditative inspirations of Black Metal and a more personalised bloodlust for unheimlich synth tones and pulsating electronic undercurrents. Its four long tracks are riven with the paradoxes that make Prurient’s music so compelling and practically a genre unto itself, meting out a sound in Earthworks / Buried in Secret that’s simultaneously nerve-gnawing yet bleakly tender, or weighing up caustic harshness with a melodic vulnerability in Apple Tree Victim that appeals far beyond the bombed-out no mans land of pure noise to intersect with the entrails of EBM in the raging but poised thunder of Military Road - one of his finest moments, bar none - and coldwave pop and fetishistic synth themes in Outdoorsman/Indestructible.If you’re willing to bite down you will find a depth of bittersweet flavour submerged beneath the tidal waves of white noise filled with nuance and vulnerability, slowly dragging you into the abyss.Ultimately though, there’s no mistaking that in the end this album is just unflinchingly fucking heavy...

Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions hail the obscure, transfixing poetry and exquisite gothic pall of Vilains Bonshommes; a Rimbaud-inspired duo including members of Canada’s Contrepoison and Norwegian group, Mare.Éternité Retrouvée was first released as a cassette edition on Norway’s Fossbrenna Creations and remains the duo’s only available output. Apparently a further album was promised, yet never manifested, which only serves to heighten the mystery of this one; their lone, exceptional iteration. Stripped to the bare essentials of drum machine, analog synth and vocals rendered in acres of sepulchral space, the 3-track EP draws listeners into a flawlessly realised sphere of dark influence where minimalist, desiccated harmonies and bony rhythms are embedded against unfathomably bombed out, maximalist backdrops - what most would define as unmistakably gothic.Poised, arch and evoking a sense of clutching power from the jaws of despair, the EP speaks to life’s loneliest but formative experiences both literally, through the use of Rimbaud’s tortured poetry in the sagging heave of L’Éternité, and metaphorically, through economically authentic sound design in the dirges of Death Shines On Triumphant Days and The Ages Anew which both suspend the listener by icy hooks at the core of it all.

NYC’s Adam X regains his ‘floor traction as Traversable Wormhole with a contrasting slab of pounding and rolling techno truckers for Hospital Productions.Offering his first new Traversable Wormhole productions in well over four years, it’s a far more amped X than we last heard on his sluggish, sewer-dwelling ADMX-1 album, Coherent Abstractions for L.I.E.S. in 2015.Sublight Velocities aims for the jugular up top, squaring off a bruising tattoo of militant kicks packing elephantine recoil while plasmic black drones stoically deplete the spirit, leaving us feeling like a gurning nub and the last person standing in the warehouse. The coldly hypnotic Semiclassical Gravity rolls off the bone on the B-side, accentuating the groove’s elliptical, rolling chassis with acidic subbass rubs and stepping hi-hat patterns seemingly dispersing the other side’s lactic build up and steeling the dancer for what’s to come.Proper, black-heart techno for the fiends.

Clay Rendering, the tortured pop project of former Wolf Eyes member Mike Connelly and his wife Tara, pledge three diverse but unmistakably gothic sacrifices to Hospital Productions in the wake of two outstanding albums and some of the most addictive EPs we’ve heard from North America’s erstwhile noise quarters.Soused in the spirits of black metal, coldwave pop and shoegaze, their new cuts reflect a black indigo spectrum of tastes with an inflamed desire for proper song structures and the kind of hooks that hearken back to teenaged thrills and what allured them to music in the first place -and it makes for perhaps their most realised set of tracks yet. With Dominick Fernow as producer and effectively acting in a 3rd band member role, they triangulate a sound that’s nostalgic for the gothic undertones of ‘80s and ‘90s darkness, getting into gear with the hearse-cruising coldwave pop rocket We Are Aware, and casting a long, northern-pointing shadow of BM toil and shoegaze anguish in Never Pass Away.Ultimately though, we reckon it’s the B-side - an instrumental cocktail of ice cold, downbeat ‘electronics that sounds like Badalamenti meets ambient Plastikman - which will get under the skin and stick with you longest...

Perhaps the most compelling of all the many projects started by one-time members of Wolf Eyes, Clay Rendering came to life in 2013 and have since released a trio of singles for Hospital Productions that have gained them the admiration of followers spanning both electronic and metal communities.Their material occupies unique terrain, recalling The Cure’s widescreen Disintegration-era instrumentals, cut through with a Black Metal palette and an appreciation of electronic music that imbues their production (notably assisted by Dominick Fernow) with an end-of-world quality that’s impossible to pin down. Evoking Nine Inch Nails one moment, you find yourself in a smoke-filled, strobe-lit Road House the next; bleary-eyed, head spinning, coming down.Guitar, Accordion, Piano and electronics underpin these songs, opening with the whirling death march of ‘Maps on The Floor’ and the funereal trudge of “Swallow The Century” before the grinding fuzz of “Sight From Up There” changes pace with the addition of a forlorn piano melody and Becka Diamond’s distant vocal zooming in on half-remembered songs, rendered here with hazy definition.“Fall Of The Bed” and “Memory Loses Momentum” find Clay Rendering at their most visceral and catchy; a reminder that they are first and foremost a band that write incredible songs, often submerged in fuzz and atmosphere, but here left exposed, bare, on display. And yet the title track “Snowthorn”, “River Without” and the incredible album closer “Night To Perish” edge the album from the bleak and into the sublime, turning away from the snowy landscapes their music so often evokes, instead pulling you deep into night...

Barcelona’s Exoteric Continent grounds his first ever vinyl release following cassette drops for Opal Tapes and Second Sleep. Exploring ascetic techno and electronic noise, this vinyl edition combines both his ‘Referèndum’ tape volumes on one fine slab.Something of a relative outsider in the balearic climes of his home city, Arnau Sala Saez pushes an intense, probing sound, both with his own music and via closely associated cohorts N.M.O., or Americans, Eric Frye, and Helmer, who’ve all released on his brilliant Anòmia label. With ‘Referèndum’ Exoteric Continent draws us into the awkward spaces and styles around techno and noise’s shifting, jagged borders, using drums, percussion, magnetic tape and synthesisers to outline nine atonal and enigmatic silhouettes.Ranging from the creeping slow techno misshape of ‘Percentages’ thru the sagging chamber feeling of ‘Posicions’, to the Soisong-like gamelan tones of ‘Transició’, and over to the kinky industrial swing instincts of ‘La Mirada Llarga’, he mixes rugged structures with stranger, keening electronics in the insectoid logic of ‘Autoritat’, and the rubbled electro-acoustic texturhythm of ‘Agrupació Civil’ to forge a fractious, unstable brace of noise techno that sits somewhere between classic Pan Sonic and his Hospital lablemate Alberich.
