Back then, circa 1991 Howe’s main squeeze Giant Sand were nothing short of prolific, songs were oozing from every pore, their creative id was effervescing, overflowing.

With Giant Sand’s colossal new album of ’91 ‘Ramp’ imminent what to do with those further outpourings? An idea: Disguise the band as Howe Gelb solo and produce a song cycle that, on repeat, melds into an eclectic stew that’s easy to dip in and out of but still remains potent several hours in the oven. It’s music as soundtrack to your day, a playful, anarchic piece of situationism that unfolds like all the best dramatic prose.

‘Dreaded Brown Recluse’ includes a rethunk ‘Warm Storm’ with strings (it also appeared on ‘Ramp’). It also features songs about faxing (how quaint), blankets and the insect world, as it straddles territory lost somewhere between psychotic ramshackle punk and slimmed down acoustic reverie.

“A wandering troubadour in search of treasured happenstance, Howe Gelb is an enigma.” The Quietus

Howe Gelb does not stand still. His next solo album 'Future
Standards' sees him fulfil a long time aspiration to play jazz
standards. Inspired by the classics, his piano songs have found a
clearer shape as “future standards” but have always been a
central element to his creativity. Sitting neatly against his huge
back catalogue of solo records, these compelling and timeless
songs are alluringly melancholic and reflective.

Clocking up a decade since its initial release “Sno Angel Like You” will be reissued this September celebrating its ten year anniversary. Collaborating with Canadian Gospel Choir, Voice of Praises following a performance at 2003’s Ottawa Bluesfest where Howe was billed alongside gospel choirs. Howe experienced his own awakening of sorts and found himself discussing with the church director the possibility of recording together. A similar run of events ensued at the same festival and Howe would go on to meet folk singer Susan Odle. Recruiting along the way, Jim Bryson’s keyboard player and recording engineer Dave Draves was soon on board and would go on to record the album. Once in the studio, Howe met drummer Jeremy Gara (pre-Arcade Fire) and together they laid down the initial recordings of the album on guitar and drums using similar recording techniques to older Giant Sand. Recording seven new songs with the choir arranging vocals, they also covered three Giant Sand songs and three Rainer Ptacek tracks. The uplifting and soulful popular tenth solo record sees “the occasionally unassuming, semi-mumble of Gelb's voice contrast marvelously with the trained, primed-for-transcendence-quality singing of Voices of Praise. The double LP is pressed to 145g black vinyl and comes with printed inners, download postcard in a beautiful gatefold cover.
