Mika Vainio - Mannerlaatta
Mika Vainio
Mannerlaatta
LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Ideal)
27,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Mika Vainio’s incredible Ambient/Brutalist soundtrack album for a film by Finnish film maker Mika Taanila. The music for Mannerlaatta was written very early on in the film’s two and a half year development, and subsequently held a strong sway over the rhythm of the film's editing and visual narration. As Vainio tends to use a set-up of homebuilt kit (strictly no laptops) unchanged from his very earliest productions, each new release is effectively a subtle alteration/refinement of his brutalist but tactile process of creation. And, going by that timeline of events, we’d speculate that Mannerlaatta was conceived somewhere in the wake of his staggering Kilo LP and the amazing Konstellaatio side as Ø, which is roughly where its aesthetics also lie. The hour-long score breaks down to 6 sections, each exploring the full frequency spectrum of his patented, greyscale tonal palette, largely swerving a fixed rhythmic meter to occupy a weightless, outta reach mid-ground that seduces us headlong into his chasmic designs and, we’d imagine, best suits the black and white film imagery. Key to the recording’s appeal - as with the best Vainio gear - is that peripheral sense of spatial dynamic and his unpredictable manipulation of amplitude; whether dangling us over abyssal subbass dimensions, needling with icy prongs, or occasionally alleviating the tension with teasing pads which evaporate back into the æther as though they were never there, ultimately leaving us rapt and at his mercy for the duration.

iDEAL and Börft pay tribute to their pal Joel Brindefalk (1975-2013) with the posthumous issue of a long-lost tape of concrète noise created in 1992 during a wavey weekend with his mates, Joachim Nordwall, Christian Topac and Johan Petersson. In making these recordings available for the first time, the closely-related labels reveal another side to Brindefalk’s known catalogue of ‘90s techno and warmer electronic dub stuff, one much more likely to broach black metal tropes and discomfiting concrète than anything warm or friendly. From the chaotic scramble of its opening couplet, the tape cuts into what sounds like a free astral jazz jam captured in bristling lo-fi, before flinging us back into the abyss with a druggy passage of hoary howls streaked with traffic noises. It gets no less wigged-out on the flip, serving as proper ear floss across four paper-cut-raw pieces of choked electronics, clattering hip hop cut-ups, and what could almost be the sound of an ogre doing the dishes.
Joachim Nordwall - The Ideal Black

The Ideal Black
LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Ideal)

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Oblique, intense and spirit-gnawing electro-acoustic exercises from The Skull Defekts founder / Ideal head honcho Joachim Nordwall, presenting a brilliantly stark album of direct and gnarly Machine energy that comes highly recommended if you’re into anything from Pan Sonic to Alessandro Cortini, Deathprod or Emptyset. Working with a bunch of tone generators fed thru a massive wall of amps at Elementstudion in Gothenburg, Nordwall isolates and fearlessly homes in on the recording space’s resonant frequencies until you can physically feel the room grinding, whining and shuddering in the kind of spasms that arch the spine and set your back teeth on edge. And he does it relentlessly for the whole record. The only steady variable in this elemental organism is the sense of rhythm; a metric, pulsing heave that keeps each piece’s tangibly immense weight pushing forward from the crack’d slap of a drum that pins The Ideal Black into place, to the quasi-step lurch of Great Mind of Fire, thru the Alessandro Cortini-Like impulse of Extreme Solutionfor a Simple Problem to the palsied, cog-ground rattle of System For Psychic Expansion and Black Out at its nether limits. In the rarest way, thanks to Joachim’s direct approach, the mixing of Linus Andersson, and Heba Kadry’s master at Timeless Mastering, Bushwick, The Ideal Black is about as close as you’ll hear to a 1-to-1 representation of pure, crushing tonal terror. A character-building exercise strongly tipped if you like the biting point sounds of: Kevin Drumm, Alessandro Cortini, Emptyset, Gottfried Michael Koenig.
Nate Young - Regression

Regression

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Wolf Eyes’ Nate Young’s Regression series has provided some of the most compelling dread-electronics spewed out by the North American underground in years, with instalments released by Demdike Stare’s DDS label and Aaron Dilloway’s Hanson, as well as NNA Tapes and others. It all began back in 2009 with this first volume issued by Joachim Nordwall’s Ideal label, an incredible set that’s now being released on vinyl for the first time ever, just in time for Wolf Eyes newly minted (Warp sponsored) Lower Floor imprint to make its debut this coming spring.Young is one of those artists whose output is instantly recognisable, his take on primitive electronics is both innovative and unnerving, and in recent years has really dominated the stylistic direction pursued by Wolf Eyes. It’s a kind of creaky, bare-boned deconstruction of classic horror scoring jolted by noise and industrial motifs, sounding somewhere between Demdike Stare’s early work, John Carpenter and Mica Levi’s by-now-classic soundtrack to Under The Skin. You could neither classify Regression as a Noise record nor an Ambient one, instead the synth dissections and tape treatments more closely reference early electronic music. ‘Trapped’ offers little of the claustrophobia suggested by its title, although the continual woody knocking sounds and filthy oscillations do engender a sense of unease, while ‘Dread’ brings to mind the Desmond Briscoe soundtrack to Nigel Kneale’s The Stone Tape. ‘Under The Skin’ returns to the more esoteric, intangible sound designs that characterised the album’s opening, writhing around in a spluttering, tactile fashion that’s at once sonically rather beautiful but deeply sinister, modulating through grisly synthesiser gestures while more textural, percussive sounds flood through dub-style tape delays. Young has an uncanny ability to make sonic extremes sound incredibly seductive, and this volume is perhaps the most engrossing exposition of that unique ability.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Frighteningly messed-up and compelling slab from Schimpfluch-Gruppe participant Dave Phillips, whom with Rise arguably establishes a crucial bridge between the continuum of radical European outsider art and NON or Halcyon Veil’s politically-charged, hyperreal soundscapes.Accompanied by some of the most fascinating sleeve notes we’ve read since, ooh, Pauline Oliveros’ Primordial/Lift, Dave Phillips’ Rise conveys a starkly impending warning about human greed and the tendency toward anthropocentric worldviews and “extractivism”, as opposed to stewardship, all rendered thru seven scenes scrolling from convulsive hyperviolence to detached, abyssal drone and clawing cacophony. We really couldn’t say whether Phillips, a tireless “purveyor of radical sound since the mid ‘80s” has heard or is even aware of the NON phenomena or Halcyon Veil’s abrasive aesthetics, but the textural and political similarities between those vital new labels and Phillips’ cranky ass are just too striking to ignore.Face first, he sucks us into the peristaltic paroxysms of We Know Enough To Know How Much We Will Never Know with a sense of arrhythmic chaos and trepidation that feels like Rabit and John Wiese imagining a world where feral populations fight over the last food and goods on the shelves, before Rise steps outside into a bombed out scape strafed with buzzing flies, and Culture Of Ethical Failure sinks into a fetid mire of soggy textures and deeply unpleasant torture chamber wretches dappled with minor key piano motifs. The Construct farther gnaws at the simulacra’s shaky resolution with visceral, unsettling white noise distortion, and Solastalgia / Ohnmacht feels like the infinite intro to a Venetian Snares calamity which never manifests, instead serving up grindcore rage in Only The Cockroaches Shall Survive To Rule The Earth, and leaving us petrified at what may come with the primordial orgy, A Grain of Salt (Goes a Long Way).OK, there’s definitely a distinction to be made between Phillips’ extreme angled weltanschauung and the hypermodern consciousness of NON and their affiliates, but it’s surely better to hear their relative similarities and, if you’re a DJ or listener who likes to mess around with their records, to crash and layer ‘em together in the mix where we’d imagine they’ll really come alive together.

Dense, roiling drone show from Joe DeNardo, who’s best known as Growing but, adopts the Ornament moniker to signify something altered from his usual practice. It starts out with a folksy sort of dissonance and soon starts to curdle and keen in fascinating formations**Joachim Nordwall of iDEAL says: “Protest Music” is the first release by Ornament, the recent project of Joe DeNardo from the band Growing. Ornament began playing shows in late 2012 around the New York City area, and recorded this album int he summer and fall of 2014 in Brooklyn, NY.While live Ornament shows have been known to test audience decibel tolerances with sounds ranging from guitar-based rawness to deeply effected, skrewed up percussion, the double entendre named “Protest Music” presents a distillation of those themes down to their essences, both positive and negative, utopian/dystopian. The complex sounds and images of “Protest Music” contend with the absolute grayness of existence.

Ectoplasm Girl, Tanya Byrne, returns to iDEAL with the uncanny, ten-stage solo noise hypnosis of ‘Unlearn’.Arriving a year on from her sister, Nadine Byrne’s incredible ‘A Different Gesture: Collected Soundtracks 2011-2012’, this suite reprises the repetitive trance states of their ‘TxN’ album, but at an enervated, slower pace and with more atonal, abstract textures in pursuit of some deeply personal, powerful and psychedelic spirit. It’s equal measures industrial ambient, black metal, and ritual electronics, dissolving her ego and diffusing it amidst a spectrum of enchanted voices, rubbling synth swells and frayed tape loops calling for comparison with Atelecine’s L.A. noir noise in ‘Teamdream’, or the bunkered chamber techno creations of 51717 in ‘Soldier’, as well as the most gutted G.O.D. output with the loping ‘Fleshworld’, or even Wold at his most mystic, black mecha in the drone pits of ‘555-Forget’.It’s a matter of life and death, and the hallucinatory, psychedelic space between those states - therefore don’t expect it to be pleasant or easy-going, as life itself.

Immense noise/techno slab from iDEAL featuring Varg, Sewer Election, Alexandra Atnif and CopleyMedal (Dais records’ Ryan Martin) with a spirit-rinsing, full spectrum noise and techno showcaseto leave you sore and breathless.Sweden’s indomitable Dan Johansson a.k.a. Sewer Election - whose Vidöppna Sår was among theearliest LPs released by PAN - goes first with a pyroclastic torrent of molten distortion whichcalves away to, strangely enough, reveal acoustic guitar strums and soggy location recordingsbefore handing over to keenly tipped American artist Alexandra Atnif, who really gets under theskin with a pair of thrumming rhythmic noise pieces demonstrating devilish discipline and aproper feel for biting-point tones. Keep an eye out for her new stuff.Trust Ryan Martin’s Copley Medal alias to reset the scene with Ger Lopig on the other side.Following from last year’s Trance Below The Streets collaboration with iDEAL bossman, JoachimNordwall, his latest sacrifice is an absorbing piece of drone torpor that could initially be aDeathprod piece or a Black Metal intro, but which eventually precipitates a deep, systolic pulse thatmarks up as the best we’ve heard from him. Then the prolific Varg takes us to the edge with the purified, headlong oscillations and noisepayload of Run No More Pts. I & II, primed to slice thru the floor or dank bedrooms withunrepentant, laser-guided precision.Supersolid.

RM is Italian mastermind of bad vibes Riccardo Mazza. The man has a free approach to his music, with no interest what so ever in the device used as a source. RM is dark, meditative harshness at it's absolutely TOP. The intent is to submerge the listener with a gloomy, ancestral mood. This is truly capturing, ambient and pulsating electronic music with nods to both minimal techno and industrial music. iDEAL is proud to release this great work of brilliance. Also, for info lovers, Mazza is half of industrial filth duo Lettera 22.

Anton Klint (a.k.a. IDIB’s Tiedye) draws squiggly acid jaxx over two faces of the 1st release from Joachim Nordwall’s Folk Disc label.Landing a year on from his breezy linx with Studio’s Dan Lissvik for Public Possession, he’s clearly taken the ticket to go weirder, wigged-out on this jaunt.A-side burns up an oddly organic acid number sprung with clattering drums, distended acid protrusions and a general sense of wonky, druggy behaviour bound to infect the club.B-side he yokes back the madness for a slick acid techno momentum, sending skittish arpeggios over solid bass ballast with a sexier thrust.Folk music indeed. Look forward to hearing more from this label!

Invasive psychoacoustic acid killer from EVOL for the sympathetic freaks at Sweden’s iDEAL.Continuing a pursuit of altered states induced by pure frequency manipulation, ‘Purple Melters’ is the fourth work in a series that started with ‘Proper Headshrinker’ (Editions Mego, 2013), a series which will also see a release on Diagonal later this year.Essentially, it’s acid house without the house, drilling down to the 303’s micro phase variations and psychedelic sleight-of-mind conjuring a sense of movement from ostensibly static phrases.Granted, you have to be a bit of a sadist to enjoy this, but really only in the same sense as a proper hardcore hooligan who gets their rocks off jackin’ in man-made synthetics to amplified music while gobbling illicit chemicals from a Dutch laboratory supplemented by synthetic hormone-infused energy fizz.

On December 14th, 2011 Mats Gustafsson played an amazing solo concert at our table at Bar Brooklyn in Stockholm. He was supposed to play a "real" concert but bastards didn't care much for that so he ended up playing at the head of our table. Someone spilled a full beer over his merch that was on that table, and we were all overly excited, of course. Jean-Louis Huhta recorded it on his Zoom, and this is an excellent document of today's leading free jazz magus.

This album consist of four beautiful, esoteric, ambient pieces composed especially for these films. In 2011, together with her sister Tanya Byrne as Ectoplasm Girls, she blessed us with one of that year's strongest albums. Deep, occult, drone pop with industrial influences. Chris Carter loved it. The Wire Magazine loved it too and ranked it as one of the album's of the year. Nadine Byrne released a 7" on iDEAL in 2010 as The Magic State but this is her first record under her own name. And it is a truly deep trip.
