Originally released in 1973 on RCA, this obscure library music title was produced by MaestroGianfranco Reverberiusing the pseudonym of Ninety as previously done before for other records like Psycheground Group Library on Lupus and the 2 Underground Set releases. The style is different from the aforementioned LPs and is closest to the style ofmurky erotic cult soundtrackscreated forRenato Polselli(Delirio Caldo, Riti Magie e segrete orge nel Trecento, etc.) as“Fire Shadows in the sunset" features congas, groovy piano, spacey synthesizers andvocals.Itcontains many other amazing tracks like "I've Got An Idea" which includes insane fat drums, hypnotic bass, trippy piano and beautiful phased flutes, or the jazz groove "Closed In a Drugstore”, the uptempo funk "You're So Vain” (Carly Simon), the hip hop drum on the cover versions of “Daniel” (Elton John, Bernie Taupin),“Sylvia’s Mother” (Shel Silverstein) and“Vincent” (Don McLean), and the slow psychedelic cinematic lounge of“Quel che non saprei dirti mai a parole”. For his next release on Soundway Records, Los Angeles-based Dexter Story hooks up with long time friend and compatriot of music, the saxophonist, jazz composer, producer and band-leader Kamasi Washington. A fierce, rumbling electro Ethio-Funk groove provides the platform for an intense and powerful interplay between Washington on tenor sax and Todd Simon on trumpet. An instrumental cover version of Tilahun Gessesse's 1970s cut of the same name, it's Story's homage to the oppressed Oromo people of Southern Ethiopia. Backed on the flip by the one cut from Story's 'Wondem' long-player that did not make it to vinyl when the LP version was cut, Nia Andrew's sublime and atmospheric collaboration on Eastern Prayer will keep all those happy who grumbled at it's exclusion from wax first time around. This is a record that no lover of Ethio-Jazz, Afro-Beat or Funk should be excused for not owning.

Egisto Macchi, often remembered as a member of Gruppo d'improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, the historic Italian improvising collective (that also included Franco Evangelisti and Ennio Morricone, among others), was a major figure within the contemporary music field from the Fifties to the Eighties. The life path of Egisto Macchi seemed to be devoted to the multiplicity of aesthetic choices and musical expressions. While tracing his life and work, one notices an interesting duality based both on a very inclusive approach towards all kind of expressive needs and full control of the level of communication. A complex personality revealing the coherence of a man trying to connect elements usually kept separate. The inherent need for approaching different sources and the ability to be inspired by a wide range of intuitions. Macchi has explored and experimented in the field of sound and music without ever forgetting about his moral and civil engagement. His compositional work takes shape from the idea that music and arts should be able to create a symbiotic contact between the creator (composer) and the beneficiary (listener). All his work finds its origin in the need to integrate the sound language with the feeling of a new developing society. In fact music was just one factor in a more complex chain which included his humanistic and sociological engagement. A syncretic philosophical narrative, in other words, a symbolic tale revealing deep anthropological aspects. BIOLOGIA ANIMALE E VEGETALE, produced by Renato Pent, recorded in Torino in 1976 and originally published as double LP, can be considered one of Egisto Macchi's major works. A rare collector’s item finally reissued in a limited edition (600 copies) luxurious 3LP Box Set (180gr + download).

After the two earlier releases on Planet Ilunga, focusing on the orchestras African Jazz and Rock-a-Mambo, it makes perfect sense that a third album should explore the treasures of that other major school of popular Congolese music. With this new compilation Planet Ilunga goes back to the very early days of O.K. Jazz, founded in 1956 in Léopoldville and disbanded in 1993. During the late fifties O.K. Jazz was the home of outstanding musicians such as Franco, Vicky, De La Lune, Edo Nganga, Dessoin, Kouka Celestin, Isaac, Brazzos, Mujos and many others. Together they created an unique and hair-raising take on rumba, cha-cha-cha, calypso, merengue and the band's favourite rhythm: the bolero. From June 1956 to August 1961 the band recorded 320 tracks for the 78 rpm music label Loningisa. Despite earlier efforts from labels such as Crammed Disc, RetroAfric and African, there is still a large part of the Loningisa back catalogue that remains hidden from the public. That's why Planet Ilunga associated with Yves Luambo Emongo (son of Franco) and Julien Rocky Longomba (son of Vicky) and compiled 32 O.K. Jazz songs that were recorded between 1956 and 1961.

This album points the way to the future. It is prophetic because George Russell felt compelled to make it so. “Jazz is changing, the sixties could well be a crucial decade,” says the composer. “One thing is certain. A variety of sound and rhythms, many of which are alien to what audiences are used to, will nd their way into jazz. Unaccountably, things we hear around us every day, very humans things, have either disappeared or been left out of jazz as we know it. “Progress is inevitable. Today’s musical palette is just not adequate. ALL feelings relative to life and beauty cannot be validly expressed with techniques now in vogue. What is more, jazz is an evolving art; it is not meant to be restricted. The very nature of the music and its history indicate this “The jazz music of the future? What will it be like? Well, the techniques are going to get more complex, and it will be a challenge for the composer to master the techniques and yet preserve his intuitive approach. And it will be a challenge to the improviser to master these techniques and also preserve the intuitive, earthy dignity of jazz (...) From the original liner notes of Burt Korall you can understand the revolutionary meaning of this wonderful LP from the great George Russell! Finally available again on ACV!

“I’m the one, you don’t have to look any further. I’m the one. I’m here, right here for you,” oozes jazz, rock, and electronic music pioneer Annette Peacock on the leadoff title track of her solo debut LP. The album’s wide range of vocal emotions and diverse sonic palette (featuring Robert Moog’s early modular synthesizers, which the singer actually transmitted her voice through to wild effect) places it firmly at the forefront of the pop avant-garde. Originally released by RCA Victor in 1972 to widespread critical acclaim, I’m The One found itself amongst good company. Both Lou Reed and David Bowie had recently signed to the label—Bowie in particular was enamored with Annette—and artists ranging from ex-husband and jazz great Paul Bley, along with notable Brazilian percussionists Airto Moreira and Dom Um Romao, guested on the album itself. Writing and arranging I’m The One’s nine passionate tracks—bar a unique cover of Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender”— the disc grooves easily from free jazz freak-outs and rough and rugged blues-funk to gently pulsing synthesized bliss. The second release on our Future Days Recordings imprint, I’m The One is returning to better record shops on CD and LP formats, re-mastered from the original tapes with an insert containing beautiful unseen photos from the vaults of Sony Music and extensive liner notes from NYC-based writer and musician, Mikey ‘IQ’ Jones. An extension of Annette’s late 1960s work with her Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show combo, I’m The One is filled with strength and power, as well as a tender, sensual, and seductive side, born of a life surrounded with music and culture. Composing by age four, Peacock’s mother was a professional violinist. By the early 1960s, Annette had also collaborated with first husband, jazz bassist Gary Peacock and toured with legendary saxophone player Albert Ayler. Studying under Zen macrobiotics educator Michio Kushi and a confidant to Timothy Leary at the Millbrook psychedelic center, Peacock later worked, post-I’m The One, with rock stalwarts like guitarists Mick Ronson and Chris Spedding, Yes/King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford, as well as surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Light years ahead of her early 1970s contemporaries in terms of individuality and uncompromising vision, the album makes today’s major label computer generated fabrications an embarrassment to listeners worldwide. Still to this day, Annette remains a passionate advocate, an enigma caught between the peace and love vibrations of a hippy counterculture and the more worldly intelligence of the modern age. Her records continue to influence and inspire, and with I’m The One finally back on the shelves, countless new jacks on the scene can scope its liner notes and bear witness to its brilliance.

This essential release is pressed on heavyweight vinyl. The reord is also housed in original glued prints on thick 700 gram cardboard packed to additional protective PVC outer sleeve.By 1975, jazz funk fusion was massively popular, varied and rapidly evolving. But for every chart topping and arena filling act, there were hundreds of regional and local bands that - if they were lucky - managed to record a single or two, or even an album. They never sold large numbers, or made it rich but they did produce some seriously top drawer music that, over the years, has grown in stature and myth. Tarika Blue is in that category and “The Blue Path” was their declaration of intent.Tarika Blue was formed in 1973 by Phil Clendenin while he was a student at Syracuse University. Clendenin was a sometime keyboard session player and studio engineer who surrounded himself with rising players and talent to create a formidable unit centred around the core line-up of Clendenin, drummer Kevin Atkins and bassist Barry Coleman. This triumvirate rhythm section was augmented by various passing members that included sax player Marvin Blackman (who also worked with Rashied Ali) as well as some stellar guitarists who would go on the assume cult status on the jazz/funk scene: Ryo Kawasaki and James Mason (Clendenin would go on to engineer Mason’s ‘Rhythm of Life’ album featuring that all-time rare groove calssic ‘Sweet Power, Your Embrace’). Also worth noting is that fact that sometime around 74-75, Clendenin was also a member of another act called the Big Apple Band, featuring a bassist Nile Rodgers and guitarist Bernard Edwards…In 1974 Tarika Blue were signed to New York jazz label, Chiaroscuro Records, founded by producer Hank O’Neal. Their first album, “The Blue Path” was all instrumental of soaring jazz funk, a finely crafted weapon in the armory of any self-respecting DJ or collector of jazz and funk. As an opening side of an album, Side A of ‘The Blue Path’ doesn’t have a weak moment: the pacing, arrangement and length of the tracks work just right; the finely considered balance of funk with jazz illustrate why it is no wonder the album became a DJ favourite and a highly sought after prize among jazz/funk aficionados. Side B continues to maintain the quality at 24 carat purity. The playing on the breezy and gleeful ‘Downtown Sound’ is a showcase for the saxophone of Marvin Blackman but there’s enough to satisfy jazz guitar fans and devotees of funky synth and keys.‘The Blue Path’ is regarded as one of the best jazz funk albums and it’s not hard to hear why. The bravura and muscular dexterity found in the best jazz artists, balanced with the groove and funk of the finest gritty bands from across the tracks, this album is a stone cold killer from the opening note to the closing fade out.

This 1975 album is a studio session organized by Maestro Giacomo Dell'Orso (the husband of Edda) here released under his given name and not the Oscar Lindok pseudonym under which he made a number of recordings including The Fine Machine. This album had the simple purpose of a fun and playful session without preconceived models. The result is a carefree album, from the friendly cover (Orso means Bear) to the music that is interwoven with bossa nova, samba, jazz and funk in a style that recalls in many ways the work of Maestro Piero Piccioni. Dell'Orso plays organ, electric piano and Bulisacchio (a synth with metal slats that simulate bass), Nino Rapicavoli on flute and sax, Jimmy Tamborelli on guitars and Ciro Cocozza on percussion.

French pianist Jef Gilson came up in the ‘60s and played in a straight-ahead hard bop style and also made forays into Afro-jazz and free jazz, including a noteworthy version of Pharoah Sanders’ “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” He featured the young violinist Jean Luc Ponty on some early recordings, and also appeared on Magma drummer Christian Vander’s Vander et les Trois Jeffs. The pianist led numerous ensembles ranging from trios to creative big bands during his career, including the Jef Gilson Nonet, Jef Gilson et Malagasy, and the Jef Gilson Orchestra. Enfin! is a French modal jazz classic featuring some of the best musicians at the time : Portal, Pontu, Tholot, JC Petit, F. Jeanneau, Vitet, Texier, Chautemps. A must have!

Totally brilliant and obscure psych era Italian library music. Originally released in 1971 for the microsmall label Vi.Di.Elle, the same label as another psych bomb, "The Black Fire - Cream". Behind the mysterious "The Green Birds" name is a marvellous trio of unsungcomposers like Franco Bonfanti, Romano Rizzati (Corfull)and Renato Sperduti (Myrval), playing here some really dope jams in the style of the Braen's Machine's Underground LP. The whole album is full of psych effects, synth melodies, wah-wah & fuzz guitars, drum breaks & loungey vibes. Track A4 "Ambiente Elegante" by Franco Bonfanti was compiled in the cultish Speedball Experience in 1996.

This selection is drawn from Billie Holiday’s recordings of the mid-1950s. Her voice possessed a unique presence, a sound that seems lit up by a resilient vitality. Producer Norman Granz set Holiday among the small jazz combos that suited her talents best, groups that included some of the finest soloists of her generation, such as trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison and saxophonists Benny Carter and Ben Webster. Granz also supplied ideal rhythm sections, with pianist Jimmy Rowles and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel making appearances here. There’s more room to stretch out than was available on the early Columbia and Commodore recordings, and the results are relaxed and profound treatments of some great songs.

Even for an artist as creatively restless as James, Love in a Time of Madness is something new: an R&B focused foray into moody soul, electronic pop, and trap-addled beats, with the occasional influence of African folk, American gospel and Minneapolitan funk. And though James' voice is no less agile and his ear no less adventurous, this is also his most relatable, daresay sexiest work yet, detailing love's ups and downs without holding back an ounce of emotion.ove in a Time of Madness follows James’ 2015 Billie Holiday tribute album Yesterday I Had the Blues and his rock infused 2014 album While You Were Sleeping. The New York Times wrote that James’ 2013 breakthrough No Beginning No End “sounds like the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow-cooked for more than 50 years.” NPR Music noted that “James makes utterly contemporary music,” adding that he “skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel” and “he holistically heals the rift between radio-friendly songcraft and virtuoso flair."James initially planned on Love in a Time of Madness being a double album. One side would be about love, and the other about societal madness—a response to the systemic and often physical violence perpetrated on U.S. citizens of color. But as he worked on the music, he recalls, "The madness part was getting way more out of control. The murders kept happening and it became overwhelming and depressing." So instead of rehashing the pain, James doubled down on the part of the album that could provide healing. That's not to say James' take on love is all so rosy. This is an album where romance isn't always romantic. James wanted to tell love's whole story.Sonically, James was inspired by modern approaches to pop identity and songwriting—the holistic vision of Grimes, the creative engine of Kanye West, the curated image of FKA Twigs, the genre-mashing of The Internet, the sonic space of Bryson Tiller, and even the savvy studio choices of Ellie Goulding. He left behind the bands of his previous albums to instead work with topline writers and producers—Miguel collaborator Tario holds down most of Love in a Time of Madness alongside Likeminds (Pharoahe Monch, Anthony Hamilton)—plus began vocal lessons, hit the gym, and started working on himself in new ways. He considered how today's solo star confirms Andy Warhol's assertion that art and artist are one and the same, and thought about how Quincy Jones approached Off the Wall by being current “without dumbing anything down.”

These desert musicians have long been quite capable of exploration and not afraid to take chances and stretch out.The concept is a throwback to the Quartet vs Quartet album, the brain child of Ornette Colman. This music has more in common with Sonic Youth or Can than with the free jazz set, however the spirit of creativity is strong. Mixed and Masterd by Alain Johannes

Great vibes from Jerzy Milian – a player who was easily one of the hippest cats to handle a vibraphone on the European continent in the 70s – heard here in a host of rare recordings from Berlin! Jerzy's Polish, and most of his work was done for the Polskie Nagrania label – but these tracks offer up a very different side of his talents than usual – some very cool, very groovy tunes that have a fantastic feel throughout – somewhere between late 60s Verve, hip Italian soundtracks, and some of the groovier projects on MPS – all reference points that really make this collection a treasure to our ears! All tunes were written and arranged by Milian – and many have a focus on the fuller ensemble instead of just his vibes – a very generous spirit to guide them. Titles include "Bagira", "Signor Cosmalino", "Wo Ist Die Socke", "Acht Und Dreizig", "Die Bunte Balkone", "Der Lustige Witwer", and "Mademoiselle Horror". (Limited edition of 500.)

Ear Of Beholderisone of the most beguiling and adventurous records of the 1970s, which is saying a lot as that is a musical decade marked by groundbreaking creativity! Originally released in 1971 on John Peel's Dandelion label LolCoxhill's sprawling double album debut is an avant-garde jazz masterstroke that features Robert Wyatt and much of the Whole World group, Kevin Ayers' backing band at the time (of which Lol was a member). Ranging from straight up feedback to reworkings of standards, outdoor recordings to spoken word, improvisation to vaudeville,Ear Of Beholdercovers more ground in 2 LPs than most artists do in a lifetime. After spending the early ‘60s playing in groups with Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp, trumpeter Bill Dixon recorded his singular and visionary masterpiece in 1967. Intents And Purposes remains not only Dixon’s defining statement as a composer, but also one of the most luminous moments in the history of avant-garde jazz. Combining orchestral timbres with free jazz intensity, Dixon leads a ten-piece ensemble including such heavyweights as Byard Lancaster, Robin Kenyatta, Jimmy Garrison and Reggie Workman. Closing each side of the album,

AK Musick's self-titled LP, originally released in 1972 in a private press edition of 150 copies on Hans Kumpf's legendary AKM Records, offers radical, freaked-out sounds with hints of free-jazz, improv and avant-garde. Fans of Anima, Annexus Quam, Albrecht D, Gulda, Nihilist Spasm Band, or Nurse With Wound will love it. Some of the instruments used were clarinet, cello, oboe, organ, piano, darbuka, tam-tam, ektare, flute and zither. The album includes the amazing 'Impro-Vision', a track recorded with conventional instruments but that sounds like electronic music. This is the first ever reissue, under license from Hans Kumpf.

Hubris continues the exploration of relentless, driving rhythms heard on Ambarchi's Sagittarian Domain (2012) and Quixotism (2014). Where those records looked to Krautrock and techno for their starting points, the sidelong opening track here begins from the perhaps unlikely inspirations of disco and new wave, drawing particularly from Ambarchi's love of Wang Chung's soundtrack to William Friedkin's To Live and Die in L.A. Leaving behind the song-forms of these reference points, Ambarchi weaves a sustained and pulsating web of layered palm-muted guitars from which individual voices rise up and recede, eventually setting the stage for some lush guitar synth from Jim O'Rourke. Arnold Dreyblatt collaborator Konrad Sprenger contributes overtone-rich motorized guitar, pushing the piece into a satisfying intersection of shimmering minimalism and rhythmic drive that smoothly builds up until the entrance of Mark Fell's electronic percussion in its final section.

On this great compilation you’ll find 16 early vocal & jazzy tunes from the Golden Age of Jive & Kwela in South Africa. All released originally on fragile shellac discs only, which is a very delicate material but the music survived thanks to the archives of ILAM. A truly great source of South African music is being preserved here for new generations, to inspire young and hopeful musicians and singers from all over the world. These treasures of musical genius were recorded in the glory years of Jive and Kwela, the years 1940-1965.On side A it is not very difficult to recognize the similarities to American popular music like R&B and small combo close harmony singing. But most of all notice that typical South African swing, that Jive, that incredible smooth form of African Jazz on side B; Kwela! The rarest and most treasured finds are collected here, some with the original spoken intros, ‘sketches’ as these were called. Characteristic conversations between the musicians, often in a humoristic slang, always extremely funny. The record is pressed to 180gram vinyl.

Gerardo Iacoucci's Urbanistica is one of the most elusive LP from the very sought after Octopus series. Released in 1971 as a noncommercial album of background music specially recorded for cinema, radio and television, Urbanistica is now come back to life in a special 180gr limited edition of 500 copies. Gerardo Iacoucci is one of the men behind Flipper's sound scene, also known for L'Avventura and Psichedelico (both published for Deneb label), but this is definitively his grooviest record, totally psych-beat, with jazzy-breaks, killer hammond, stunning drums and soul-jazz brass section.

Ghost Box co-founder Jim Jupp and his loose ensemble of session musicians create a unique kind of upbeat spookiness. They meld krautrock, glam, faux folk and ancient TV soundtracks across eleven joyous, slightly camp and oddly unsettling instrumentals.Moving away somewhat from the haunted electronics and occult signifiers of the earlier albums, Belbury Poly employ a more diverse instrumental palette to continue the exploration and illustration of a fictional landscape.

One of the few 1960 recordings by the legendary formation in its only European tour, before Coltrane’s departure to form his own band; you can hear the master musician just on the cusp of breaking forward to his more progressive-leaning phase, while still completely rooted in tradition. Fresh from recording the legendary Inner Space soundtrack, 1974 sawSven Libaek embark on Solar Flares, an amazing library recording for PeerInternational UK. Possibly best described as the companion piece to Inner Space, a polar vision in which this time the themes were inspired by the far reaches of ‘Outer Space’. A pioneering recording that featured the Australian designed synthesizer, the Qaser, a prototype of the first digital sampler, the Fairlight CMI. Although recorded in Sydney, it only saw a limited library issue in the UK and has since become a highly collectible LP. Expect Libaek’s trademark sound of sublime spacey jazz exotica. Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the 30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions, by the 40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the 50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created on this side of the sun. This collection compiles Saturn singles and rare hard to find early Sun Ra in different forms/group settings including the Cosmic Rays, the Qualities, Sun Ra and his Myth-Science Arkestra, and more from 1955-1962. A must have for all true Sun Ra collectors, this is a comprehensive retrospective on the early days of this legendary music guru packed into a monstrous double LP.

The latest in the ever expanding Psychic Sounds collection of sonic treasures is from around the world in East Java, Indonesia documented by artist and musician Arrington de Dionyso (Malaikat dan Singa / Old Time Relijun) during his travels. It focuses on music that accompanied a festival of Pencak Silat, which is a form of kung fu that is part combat form and part dance performance practiced in Java for many centuries with an element of trance that is reinforced by the fast paced repetitive music. This raw recording features a gloriously vibrant din of fiery double-reeded wind instruments, fierce cries, jubilant flutes, and an explosive bass clarinet which all whirl endlessly atop a bed of a dense and dizzyingly assemblage of bells, cymbals, gongs that truly stirs up a visceral and wild concoction of traditional folk music and mutated free jazz.

Featuring a lineup of musicians who would go on to weave ECM’s significance into the fabric of time, Solstice is a tour de force of musicianship, writing, arrangement, and recording. Each track is brimming with life and features the sensitive application of a variety of instrumental combinations and studio savvy. “Oceanus” showcases Garbarek in his prime, soaring with an unbridled emotional register. As always, Towner’s 12-string speaks in 360 degrees. Superb drumming from Christensen complements lush melodic lines from Weber, who stretches a melodic cello into infinity while his bass arises like the conical aftereffect of a water droplet. “Visitation” clouds this ardor in a nocturnal vision filled with laughing spirits. “Drifting Petals” is a slow progression, a timid look out onto a dusty plain where the promise of freedom looms larger than the possibility of danger. But then an elder’s advice rings in our ears and pushes us onward. Feet move of their volition and pull us into the ever-receding horizon as the first drops of a squall streak across our foreheads. Towner proves again that his piano musings are not to be taken lightly, as they make for one of the most evocative tracks on the album. A transcendental 12-string solo (with gentle dimensional support from Weber) opens “Nimbus,” soon blossoming into a flourish of flutes, drums, and a bowed bass that cries with the grating fluidity of a sarangi. Garbarek’s sax joins in the fray and lets loose its harmonious fire. The deftly overdubbed flutes return, spreading their wings for a few moments before fluttering off into the distance. “Winter Solstice,” “Piscean Dance,” and “Red and Black” comprise a triptych of duets: the first for classical guitar and sax, the second a prime jam for 12-string and drums, and the third for 12-string and bass. “Sand” ends our cosmic journey with one of Garbarek’s deepest meditations for sax set to the strangely compelling ululations of Christensen’s flexatone lolling about in the background.Melodically robust while structurally yielding, this is an album to be treasured and is a must-listen for anyone desiring to know what ECM is all about. An astounding meeting of musical minds if there ever was one.

Helios is typically credited for our solar well-being, but let's not forget that his four horses have been the ones doing the heavy lifting day in and day out all these years...;They must have bailed on the bossman somewhere above Connecticut because on September 9, 2013 in New Haven it was not Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon, and Phlegon but Tiger Hatchery (Ben Baker Billington, Mike Forbes, Andrew Scott Young) and Paul Flaherty who brought the heat. Neither party is any stranger to fire music: after cutting their teeth in Texas and Cleveland like so many other purveyors of the ecstatic now Tiger Hatchery congealed in Chicago and their blistering take on free jazz earned them a recent entry in the venerable ESP-Disk'ography; Paul Flaherty needs little introduction having lent his biting reed attack to countless outfits since his 1978 debut, among them mind melds with Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, C Spencer Yeh, and Bill Nace.Live In New Haven documents both entities convulsing as one, with Forbes' and Flaherty's labyrinthine saxophone mutations squirming against the brink of the Billington-Young skins 'n' strings throb unit. Yet despite the volcanic nature of the session, the quartet exhibits a sage capacity for both restraint and an elevated plane of almost-composed melodicism unheard in Tiger Hatchery's corpus of abandon as a trio.

Lasse Marhaug, electronics. Kim Myhr, electronics, electric guitar.SOFA is proud to release "On The Silver Globe" the debut album of the duo of Kim Myhr and Lasse Marhaug. The album originated as a commission from the MetaMorf art biennale in Trondheim for the two musicians to collaborate on a 8-channel piece for the 2016 edition. The morphing of Myhr and Marhaug proved to be a good match, the two had known each other for years but never worked together, and in the process of making "On The Silver Globe" found this collaboration should be more than a one-off. After the performance of the 8-channel version the two went back into the studio to make a stereo-version of the piece, which is now being released as a CD and LP."On The Silver Globe" borrows its title from the 1988 film by polish director Andrzej Zulawski, a science-fiction story set on a distant planet but also something that could be read as a political allegory of the struggle against totalitarianism. The film was stopped mid-production by the state and not released until ten years later, with unfinished scenes replaced by unrelated footage of a realist nature. Another influence for the piece was Andrew Smith's "Moon Dust" book, which deals with how different the individual astronauts of the Apollo programme dealt with the extraordinary experience of going to the moon, and how the space program was ultimately shut down by the Nixon administration. Both Myhr and Marhaug are apt improvisers and musicians, but "On The Silver Globe" is a pure studio creation. The piece is divided in five sections, and the instrumentation is of a wide range, including guitar, vintage analogue and modular synthesizers, oscillators, granular synthesis, digital prossessing, acoustic objects and a wide range of studio trickery. The result is a powerful tapestry of sound sheets that is constantly morphing into new shapes, but also with sudden shifts in character, slowly making its way towards the inevitable conclusion, in which all cosmic matter is sucked into a black hole.
