Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe, 1980-1991' is compiled by record connoisseur Raphael Top-Secret and label man Jamie Tiller that brings together twenty one tracks from across the continent; exploring the more unusual and unexpected sides of pop music produced during that period. Printed Inner sleeves.Drawing material from cult experimental artists alongside one-off independent musical projects rescued from the fringes, ’Uneven Paths’ focuses on a selection of tracks that go beyond the confines of mainstream pop music but which also transcend expectations of much of the ’experimental’ music of the time. This is music with one foot in the avant-garde and another foot firmly rooted within the sensibilities of Pop; where Jazz musicians detour into Synth-Pop, Punk bands break into Boogie jams, and student doctors jam out on odd melodies with synthesizers and drum machines during their night shifts.

Despite this eclectic range of international influences, Henry’s sound remains distinctively British, crazily present and in the true tradition of jazz is bold. The Easter EP sees Henry tackle a broad range of material in his original tracks and re arrangements of tracks by revered US rapper Nas and indie punk trio The Enemy.

A primer on London’s bright-burning young jazz scene, this new compilation brings together a collection of some of its sharpest talents. A set of nine newly-recorded tracks, We Out Here captures a moment where genre markers matter less than raw, focused energy. Surveying the album’s running order, it could easily serve as a name-checking exercise for some of London’s most-tipped and hardworking bands of the past couple of years. Recorded across three long, fruitful days in a North West London studio, the results speak for themselves: they’re a window into the wide-eyed future of London’s musical underground. The album bottles up some of the vital ideas emanating from that burgeoning movement. A reflection of how London’s jazz-influenced music has reached outward into new spaces, the sound of the record draws from a wide pool. There’s plenty of crossover between each of the groups, too, speaking to the close-knit circles which make up the scene; shared line-ups reflect the mutual cooperation and DIY spirit which are second-nature.

The album’s opening track, ‘Alba’, bathes the listener in a warm glow of vibes and electric piano with a groove evoking the laid back soul jazz of classic Ramsey Lewis Trio. Horns build up as the track lopes along, adding a punchy rawness to the languid head nodding slo-mo funk. A change of gear as ‘Samba Costanera’ briefly jacks up the pace with an opening of vivid, jarring stabs of piano and cymbal before dropping into a mid tempo beat with descending vibe motif. A bluesy tenor rides on top while the drummer keeps the beat tight and tidy before an outro of rapid electric piano trills and cymbal splashes. We leave as we entered. ‘Jenny’, a lush ballad, calms things down, as brushes gently skit on the drums, the vibes lap over the ears and the sax blows blue and mellow. ‘Paquito’ is another ballad on the album that demonstrates the range of the group, starting out somewhat impressionistic before a light samba rhythm takes charge and gently leads to track to its fade out. A cover of the classic Herbie Hancock ‘Maiden Voyage’ is a workout for the vibes once more. I am reminded of the late Bobby Hutchinson, yet this version is definitely Aquila’s own; electric piano gently accent the arrangement and the sax solo adds colour and texture to this glorious standard. ‘Providencia 12 Hrs’ keeps the rhythm section busy once more with dreamy vibes, pliant bass and fizzing cymbals along with ever insistent drumming that takes the track into a sudden beboppish section replete with walking bass and swinging vibes. With the breakneck ‘El Viaje’, Aquila prove they can swing. It’s taken at a brisk pace, the bass working hard as the sax tears up the first solo before the vibes attack. Veering towards free in places, they keep it together enough to hold down a powerful and coherent groove. The album ends with their second cover version. This time, it’s their interpretation of Pharaoh Sanders’ ‘Um Allah’. Built around a powerful opening bass figure, the classic Sanders motif is instantly recognisable yet they do not try to be a carbon copy. Instead, they use Sanders and springboard for their own abilities. The vibes the centre stage here in the opening solo, colourful runs give space and depth to the sound before the horns enter and the band unite once more before the fade out.

Near the end of the old millennium, someone once rapped, "Being futuristic these days means being futuristic on your own terms," which is entirely fitting when said rapper records an album of solo piano instrumentals. (Perhaps less instructive is what said rapper went on to say: "Being futuristic means loving worms, saving your sperm, wearing your pubes in a perm.") The former Chilly Gonzales has a hint of Gershwin in his playing, an urbane, contemplative take on the blues that sometime turns into a wry smile. He also has a hint of Satie, the spare and haunted sound of a music box turning slowly to a halt as it comes to the end of its wind. But what he also has is entirely his own, which not only makes this the best album of solo piano instrumentals by a rapper extant but also one of the finest solo piano albums not by a jazz or classical performer. Obviously, there's a duality to any man who lit up stages with Peaches but also played with and produced Jane Birkin and Charles Aznavour, but Solo Piano is a disarmingly wonderful record. - allmusic.com

In 60s Europe the jazz community forged ahead with a different revolution, that of breaking away from mere emulation of their American counterparts. A distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-Coltrane European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavour. A heady mix indeed, stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, festival performances recorded live from the grassy heartlands of central Europe, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and Flamenco folk music. This is Spiritual Jazz - European style. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes! 180g double vinyl pressing with thick, glossy double gatefold sleeve and colour inserts.

Vibraphone and keyboard player, master arranger and bandleader, Mulatu Astatke is one of the all-time greats of Ethiopian music and the creator of his own original music form, Ethio jazz. Through the acclaimed Ethiopiques album series and through featuring on the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers, his music has belatedly reached a global audience and a new, younger generation of fans. In November of last year, he recorded an inspired new album with London psych jazz band The Heliocentrics for Strut's "Inspiration Information" studio collaboration series. Now, Strut are proud to present, for the first time anywhere, the definitive Mulatu career retrospective covering his landmark ?60s and ?70s recordings. Mulatu is a true pioneer of African music. He was the first Ethiopian musician of his generation to travel extensively and to record abroad. He studied in the UK in Wales and at Trinity College Of Music in London, cutting his teeth on the buoyant London jazz scene of the early ?60s. He became the first African student to attend Harvard and he lived and recorded in New York, developing a unique sound that fused Western jazz with traditional Ethiopian melodies.

Regularly playing Troost in North Brooklyn the band have self-released two live albums digitally but their self-titled debut LP on Amish Records is a culmination of a two year-period of recording. Hundreds of recorded hours allowed ideas to develop organically and the album has a loose ecstatic improvisational feel, leaning in part on jazz, rock and long-form minimalism. From the looping rhythms of “Scarabs” to the plaintive middle-eastern influenced guitar lines of “Octopus” to the bombast of the album’s closing song “Tesla,” Gospel of Mars are a new voice to be reckoned with. Beyond Gospel of Mars, these musicians have played in Eaters, Volcano The Bear, Evolutionary Jass Band, Micro East Collective and Jackie O'motherfucker, among others projects.

“We started with the principle – the cosmic idea that we were taught by our father from a very young age – that the stars and planets make a sound, that deep in outer space there is audible harmony.”With its cathedral-like, richly resonant acoustics, the new HBE album is a brilliant expression of this interplanetary principle. The album is by turns urgent and contemplative, funky and reflective, varied in its textures; but entirely of one piece. Underpinned by concepts of our earth’s place in the cosmos, held in place by meditation, swirling with notions of history, science, theology, ancestry, there is a rich conceptual brew here. But always, what talks loudest is the music. The album rings with what back in the 1950s the jazz critic Whitney Balliet called “the sound of surprise”. At a time when the phrase Spiritual Jazz threatens in some quarters to become a tired cliche, this is a record that makes you believe again in the genre’s validity.Talking to Cid, one of the Ensemble’s two trombonists, one phrase recurs: “back to the beginning”. “We wanted to go back to the beginning, when we were kids, real young, and our father would wake us up at 5 AM to practice for two hours before breakfast.” One outcome – initially unplanned but subsequently embraced – is that unlike their two previous albums on Honest Jon’s, this is an album without a drummer. “When we started, as Wolf Pack, just brothers on the street with our horns, there wasn’t a kit in sight.” Book Of Sound retains plenty of rhythmic heft, but the absence of a drummer opens up space for a notably varied instrumental palette. Acoustic guitar, piccolo, synthesiser, alto sax – none of them typical HBE Instruments – all have their place on the album. Most striking perhaps are the vocal lines that thread through the album and give it a palpable warmth. “In Wolf Pack, we rapped and played, this time we took it a step further.”Sessions were recorded in Brooklyn and Chicago, and brilliantly mixed at Abel Garibaldi’s studio in the Loop (“Abel was like a musician on this record”), and it’s the Hypnotic’s hometown that permeates. For Cid this is a deeply Chicago record: “it’s got the vibe of the lake, the vibe of the prairies opening up to the west”. It also has the vibe of those Sun Ra Arkestra albums recorded in Chicago in the 1950s, and – of course - the Phil Cohran albums from the 1960s.It’s Phil Cohran (the father of all seven members of the Ensemble and their first teacher, and not just in music) who is the album’s guiding spirit. For Cid it’s a major regret that, in the months before their father’s death early in 2017, Phil was not well enough to play on the album. “He loved the whole idea, and we had the perfect place for his zither”. But Book Of Sound is a magnificent testament to their Cohran legacy. “You know, it’s tough trying to satisfy everybody with our music. It’s hard enough satisfying ourselves, let alone the jazz scene, the hip hop guys, what have you. With this album we just dropped all that as a consideration, and tuned into deeper principles.”

As Finders Keepers disobedient little-sister-label reaches her 20th (release) anniversariesCacophonic Records are proud to present a record that will not only leave rare recordcollectors salivating but will open ambitious ears to a truly pioneering album from the seldomcelebrated and individualistic micro-genre that is French free Jazz. Comprising some of theearliest uninhibited performances from key musicians behind records by Serge Gainsbourg,Jef Gilson, Triangle, Don Cherry, Barbara and countless other groundbreaking European jazzrecords and freakish films, this LP captures the birth of an exciting movement that wouldsoon earn its Parisian birthplace as the go-to European spiritual home of improvised andavant-garde music. Spearheaded by polymath pianist and composer François Tusques this1965 French LP coined the phrase “free jazz” before the American genre of the same namehad fully taken shape and packed its suitcase; laying the foundations (alongside Jef Gilson’sEnfin!) for a unique satellite brand of jazz that would later provide visiting afro Americanavant-gardeners with a vibrant Parisian platform. Having recorded a very rare single incelebration of the architect Le Corbusier in late 1964 Tusques was lucky enough to playlive with Don Cherry (a key player on Ornette Coleman’s 1961 Free Jazz LP) thus planting apedigreed seed for this vibrant cultivar. With this record we not only hear the unique differences within the Gallic approach to the artform (combining masterful sombre cinematic changes with aerated free-form percussion anderratic reed and brass) but we also get to witness the early lesser savoured secret ingredientsthat would carry France’s mainstream pop culture into truly uncharted and unrivalledterritories throughout the following decades. Best known to faithful Finders Keepers fans asthe soundtrack composer to the horrortica films of Jean Rollin, Tusques is joined here by saxand flute player Francois Jeanneau, who’s electronic jazz album Such A Weird Plane” wouldlater lead to his own band Triangle gaining recognition as France’s leading French languageprig-jazz-rock act. Featuring three players from the aforementioned Enfin! LP by French jazzpioneer and producer Jef Gilson, Free Jazz combines the skills of Jeanneau, with clarinetplayer Michel Portal (Gainsbourg Percussions/Claude Nougaro) and trumpeter Bernard Vitet(whose avant-garde appearances on the Futura label are indispensable). In addition to this,Free Jazz also boasts the inclusion of Tusques’ sidekick and double bass master Bernard“Beb” Guérin (of Sonny Sharrock Monkey-Pockie-Boo infamy) who had also appeared onthe earlier Don Cherry/Le Corbusier recording providing further kudos to this LPs historicalimportance. It is by no coincidence that this carefully selected ensemble would around this time becomeenlisted as the backing group for politically driven singer-songwriter Colette Magny (an actionwhich would arguably later influence Brigitte Fontaine’s choice to adopt The Art Ensemble OfChicago as her backing band after the Actuel records Pan-African Jazz festival and recordseries). The fact that Colette Magny would provide the art direction for this very LP is a cutesmall-print signifier of this LPs intended manifesto status. This album also captures a rareglimpse of percussionist Charles Saudrais in free-form mode after his departure from theBarney WIlen Quartet (Moshi) - an inclusion that would surely galvanise the relationshipbetween WIlen and Tusques resulting in the follow-up record Nouveau Jazz for actor MarcelMouloudji’s privately funded Disques Mouloudji label (on which both rare LPs were originallypressed). This glimpse into a seldom documented underground of a domestic, revolutionary, uncompromised spiritual art-form successfully reveals the other-side of abstracted Frenchmusic which alongside musique concrète, protest pop, symphonic rock and Zeuhl-skoolelectronic prog created a homegrown, self-contained music industry that went on to influencea universe of Gallic magnetic inspiration. “This is free jazz, Jim; but not as we know it.”

Recorded at Helsinki's We Jazz Festival, the new LP "Origami" by the Jaska Lukkarinen Trio offer a solid glimpse of the remarkable creative power of one of the best working groups in the vibrant Finnish scene. Drummer Jaska Lukkarinen (of Dalindèo), sax man Jussi Kannaste and bassist Antti Lötjönen (of The Five Corners Quintet) play jazz which relies on the strong dynamic of the group. They swing at times, turn inwards for some deep meditative passaged on occasion, and find their own personal way within the music. Think pianoless small groups in the vein of some of Jimmy Giuffre's best work, for example, and you're in the right mindset. On this LP, the Jaska Lukkarinen Trio capture the essence of their music and the innovation in the moment which is at the very core of all great jazz music. They tackle the music of a close collaborator Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen (of Dalindèo and Ricky-Tick Big band), and deliver a which set brimming with fresh musical ideas, and this music has appeal well outside of the hard core jazz crowd. This music is approachable yet deep with layers at the same time. The EP finds Mark de Clive-Lowe revisiting the grand piano, putting his first instrument front and center with his technological world of keyboards and electronics. It’s his signature amalgamation of acoustic sound sparring with new technology, joined by a world-class crew: Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson / Wayne Shorter) on sax and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens (Robert Glasper/Terrace Martin) on bass and Gene Coye (Thundercat/Flying Lotus) on drums. The instrumental EP opens with an original composition, ‘Evergreen’. Solo piano sets the mood as the composition evolves into a head-nodding, beat-driven journey of improvisational conversation. As the music progresses, we hear Mark de Clive-Lowe programming beats and electronics live and on the spot – manipulating and sampling his own piano, keyboards and Johnson’s sax – creating a musical palimpsest inspired by hip hop’s sampling aesthetic. Only here, the samples are all organic - performed, captured and manipulated completely on the fly.The following tracks pay homage to three of Mark de Clive-Lowe’s heroes – Yusef Lateef firstly on the loping ‘L+H’ – inspired by Yusef’s ‘Love + Humor’ with Owens and Coye underpinning the groove while Mark de Clive-Lowe and Johnson play and become live samples themselves. Sun Ra gets honored the EP’s centerpiece – an 11 minute exploration of his composition ‘The Golden Lady’ – once again, Mark de Clive-Lowe piano is the central focus here, leading the way through a mystically evocative soundscape that reimagines the great master. Johnson switches to flute here bringing his playfulness and musical guile to the mix with the piece culminating in an intoxicating blend of beats, live samples and acoustic band. We close out with an interlude of Ahmad Jamal’s ‘Swahililand’ – most famously sampled for De La Soul’s ‘Stakes is High’ by iconic producer J Dilla. It’s a real treat to hear Mark de Clive-Lowe and band in full-flight live show mode with none of the safety nets of studio production. Live at the Blue Whale hints at what’s more to come from a truly individual musician.

Insurgently crossing Philly Soul, Cape Jazz and bump jive in 1976, the same year as the Soweto Uprising; poignantly shot through with Timmy Thomas’ Why Can’t We Live Together. ‘It was so important for us to play a kind of crossover then, to weave in touches of Motown, Philadelphia soul and Teddy Pendergrass that the coloured community appreciated, and Basil’s Cape Town sound, and Sipho’s sound that was legendary in the black community, and make music that people could all enjoy together… The regime divided us: people classified coloured had identity documents; black people had the dompas. We didn’t accept that separation. Sipho, although he was born in KZN, could play any feel. Sometime he’d joke, Does my bass line feel coloured enough?’ Another landmark Matsuli. The title track is killer.

From the same vibrant cinematic landscape of 70s studio supergroups as Goblin, ThePawnshop, The Feedback and The Braen’s Machine comes The Magnetic System -the Italian incognito dream team comprised of Milano prog keyboardist Vince Temperaand Cinevox sibling Franco Bixio and launched the career of Video Nasty maestroFabio Frizzi. Bridging the void between Giallo jazz bass driven prog and the arrival ofhome studios and synthesisers, the omnipresent film music of The Magnetic Systemmarked a sea change in Italian genre film music, promoting melodic electronics to theforefront of Italian pop culture and pre-empting the first murmurs of Italo disco andsynth-pop. Sharing session musicians, studios and release schedules with many ofthe aforementioned luminaries, Bixio, Frizzi and Tempera’s magnetic powers continueto attract musicians and aficionados of discerning sight and sound.Masterminded in the mid-70s at the apex of Italian film music’s most exciting transitionalperiod, The Magnetic System was created to encapsulate the combined efforts of threeof the country’s most prolific and adventurous soundtrack composers in an attemptto retarget their lauded behind-the-scenes personas towards the Italian commercialinstrumental pop market. In the early 1970s with a climate that nurtured instrumentalrock such as the work of Franco Battiato, Sensation’s Fix and Le Orme, the soundtrackspecialist label Cinevox (founded by Cesare Andrea Bixio) identified opportunitieswithin their roster and pressed up a string of non-cinematic psychsploitation bandslike The Motowns and Cherry Five, finally finding chart success with the rebrandedwriting team known as Goblin. By 1977 the unison and group christening of FrancoBixio, Fabio Frizzi and Vincenzo Tempera aka The Magnetic System would join a list ofretitled outfits like The Pawnshop (featuring Allesandro Allesandroni, Giuliano Sorginiand Giulia De Mutiis), The Braen’s Machine (featuring Allesandroni and Rino De Filipi)and The Group (a drum-heavy version of Morricone’s Gruppo di Improvvisazione diNuova Consonanza), all of whom took brief hiatuses from their soundtrack and librarymusic day jobs to throw overqualified prog pop on the commercial craps table. Theunfortunate low demand for these ambitious unchartered excursions resulted in smallruns, which (with time as a healer) would cause future record collectors to salivate- the one and only 7” single by The Magnetic System being no exception to thisphenomenon. Also experimenting under further alter egos such as the Day-Glo Fruit OfThe Gum and the Spaghetti Western-cum-disco Benjamin Franklyn Band, the group’sthird moniker The Magnetic System specifically showcased the trio’s more aggressive, brooding and heavier sound in comparison to its sister groups. This compilation gathersa wider selection of the trio’s compositions that fall within the stylistic parameters ofThe Magnetic System’s creative blueprint; culling drum-heavy synthesised psychedelicsoundtracks with sympathetic leanings to the white funk/cosmic disco murmurings ofthe era

With track titles translating to Song For The Devil and The Witches, Francois Tusques’ rarest commercially released LP casts an early stylistic premonition of the vampire themed improvised soundtracks recorded for director Jean Rollin merely months after its release. Assembling the very same group of musical sorcerers this albums personnel (featuring, amongst others, soprano saxophonist Barney Wilen) reads like a who’s who of France’s early improvised music/free jazz scene resulting in a wholly unique European flavour while preserving the essence of other global inter communal travellers such as Don Cherry and Krzysztof Komeda. Originally extracted from three separate recording sessions in early 1967, Le Nouveau Jazz opens with themes conjured up for the short film Coda by French jazz documentarist Marc Pauly highlighting the composers adept ability in his multi-disciplined art further aligning him with the aforementioned pioneers. The rest of the album combines frenzied macabre picture music (akin to Detroit’s Wendell Harrison) and emotive piano improvisations (Mal Waldron anyone?) with the sui generis inclusion of a double double bass formation courtesy of Bernard “Beb” Guerin (Sonny Sharrock/Kühn Brothers) and Jean-Francois Jenny Clarke (Enrico Rava/Giorgio Gaslini). As Tusques’ second official album (after the seldom sighted Free Jazz from 1965) this LP expands on this important French musicians vision and follows up Cacophonic’s repress of his mega rare Don Cherry art installation collaboration from 1964 this time introducing extra rhythmic arrangements courtesy of Italian drummer Aldo Romano (Robin Kenyatta). Housed in the elegant original Witches artwork sleeve by comic illustrator Jean Vern with French liner notes by French psychiatry/beat poet/crime fiction writer Yves Buin this worthy reissue hopes to find a unique uninhabited part of your collection from an era that changed the Parisian underground prior to the important developments of labels like BYG Actuel and Futura Records in the early 1970s.

Another AMS Records exclusive, another Cinevox rarity, this time broughtforth over 40 years ago by the genius of Ennio Morricone, in the heyday ofItalian underground cinema, years when true masterpieces were made, ofteninnovative from various points of view (plot, photography, colors, settings,screenplay...)."4 Mosche di Velluto Grigio" (4 Flies on Grey Velvet) ends the so-called'animal trilogy' by Dario Argento, and sees the director in an absolutelyinspired moment, yet probably unconscious that he'll leave an indelible markin the history of world cinema with his following works. This movie, for somereasons, was never officially released on videotape - apart, perhaps, in anobscure French edition - and only recently has finally been issued on opticaldisc, while from the soundtrack only released a 45rpm single was pressed atthe time, before it was fully recovered in the '90s.In "4 Flies ..." Morricone wrote one of his most 'rock-oriented' soundtracks -without of course neglecting his indelible touch - also thanks to the fact thatthe protagonist of the film is a rock drummer. You hear echoes of DeepPurple, not surprisingly given that Argento wanted them as the first authorsof the movie score, and it is no coincidence that his most famous film istitled... Deep Red!Another great reissue in gatefold LP format for collectors and soundtracksenthusiasts!

As then, calypso carries the swing. There are four more Lord Kitchener songs — in consideration of his wife leaving him for a GI, cricket umpires, a fling onboard an ocean-liner and West Indian poultry — besides a hot mambo cash-in, cross-bred under his supervision, and an uproarious, teasing Ghanaian tribute to him in Fanti by London visitors The Quavers. Other calypsos range compellingly from the devaluation of the pound through jiu jitsu, big rubbery instruments, football fans, heavyweight champ Joe Louis and the sexual allure of English women police. The Mighty Terror contributes the woe-begotten, cautionary tale of his beloved Patricia's change of heart: 'I cannot believe, not for one moment / She gone with Millicent... / You may think I am jocular / But this really happened in Manchester / I felt so ashamed, my friends laughed at me / I had to take a train for London city.' Ambrose Campbell is back, with six more shots of prodigal, limber, melancholic, visionary West African highlife. Also the Rolling Stones' favourite Ginger Johnson, with a percussive Latin scorcher; and Mona Baptiste, with some wonderful, soulful exotica. Jamaican mento makes its first entry in the series, with a brace by Tony Johnson: a drily witty drinking-song, and a love-letter to Marilyn Monroe. Also finally getting some dues, the path-breaking Latin-African-jazz experiments of Ghanaian drummer and percussionist Buddy Pipp, with spine-tingling playing by the great Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott. Expert jazz idioms course sophisticatedly through all the selections, which include a straight-up, South London version of Duke Jordan's Jordhu, something from Dizzy Reece's soundtrack — brokered by Kenneth Tynan — to the British crime film Nowhere To Go, and a trio of magnificently hybrid, hard-swinging instrumentals led in turn by master-guitarist Fitzroy Coleman, Kitch's innovative arranger Rupert Nurse, and trumpeter Shake Keane — named after Shakespeare because of his love of poetry — from St. Vincent.

Awareness is Buddy Terry’s first album for Mainstream Records out of the three he recorded for Bob Shad’s label. This is pure undiluted spiritual jazz both deep and funky. Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, “Electric Soul” in 1967 and “Natural Soul” in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this album, an undisputed buried treasure Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue. 1971 saw him picked up by the ever active Bob Shad who had just decided to produce a new crop of young jazzmen in tune with the sonic revolution of the time with John coltrane’s Eastern influences and Miles Davis’ experiments drawned from the music Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Awareness is a pure result of this incredible blend which saw labels like Black Jazz or Strata East transform jazz into a hip and cool genre adorned by the Woodstock generation. Featuring a glittering line up composed of Strata East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano and Rhodes, Cecil Bridgewater on Trumpet, Buster Williams and Victor Gaskin on bass, Roland Prince on guitar, Mickey Roker on drums and a young Mtume on percussion. Together they play a superb mix of deep and funky jazz in the best tradition of the genre. Both hypnotic (Kamili) and funky (check Cowell signature tune Abscretions), the album is a pure delight graced by Shad’s tight production values. It will ravish all lovers of early 70s spiritual jazz. Buddy Terry recorded another two great albums for Mainstream and played on Art Blakey superb Child’s Dance from 1972 gracing the record with his wonderful soprano sax playing. A great player worth (re)discovering. This release will be augmented by never-seen session photos by Raymond Ross as two CD bonuses in the form of two single versions of “Babylon” and “Stealin’ Gold” well as new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation/Superfly).This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.

John Coltrane transformed the inner architecture of jazz, throughout the mid-1950s and 1960s and long after his premature death at age 40 in 1967. No other American musician could be said to be at the spiritual center of the ‘60s musical universe as Trane influenced Albert Ayler, La Monte Young, Jimi Hendrix and everybody in between. Cosmic Music, originally self-released by Alice Coltrane in 1968 and later issued by Impulse!, features two tracks (“Manifestation” and “Rev. King”) by John Coltrane’s legendary final quintet that were recorded in San Francisco on February 2nd, 1966 and two more (“Lord Help Me To Be” and “The Sun”) from Alice Coltrane’s very first session as a bandleader, recorded six months after her husband’s passing. “Manifestation” opens with the group already in mid-flight: Trane’s fierce tenor leads the way with Pharoah Sanders’ blistering sax and Alice’s powerful chords hearing his call. On “Rev. King,” Trane introduces a lyrical theme and then the composition erupts into fiery incantations, while Jimmy Garrison’s bass throbs alongside the propulsive, gravity-defying drumming of Rashied Ali. Foreshadowing her majestic debut, A Monastic Trio, “Lord Help Me To Be” brings Alice’s celestial piano playing and inspired improvisations to the foreground with Sanders, Garrison and drummer Ben Riley rumbling in tow. “The Sun,” a meditative ballad with subtle urgency, perfectly closes the album’s contemplative circle. As John Coltrane recites on the final track, “May there be peace and love and perfection throughout all creation.”

In 1975, Milton Marsh released his first album“Monism”for the Strata-East label. Marsh, a composer, arranger, saxophonist and flautist, recorded the album in New York City from 1973-1974. The musicians onMonismrepresent some of the finest living in NYC at the time: pianist Cedric Lawson, bassist Don Pate along with two rising stars at the time, David Ware on saxophone and Greg Bandy on percussion. Ironically, all of these artists would go on to record several volumes of music in their careers except for Marsh, who recorded only one additional album, 1985’s“Continuum”, after a decade long absence. Marsh composed and arranged all of the album’s six compositions, each of which featured between nine and 17 players. This sizable headcount explains the album’s ability to soar from quiet, minimal moments to robust, dissonant explosions, depending upon the track. “Vonda’s Tune”, the album’s opener, begins with a brief solitary and somber horn solo, which later opens up to the more “avant” sounds of “Community Music”. The title track is where Marsh’s compositions reach their most unpredictable and exciting moments, however. “Monism” closes out the A side with a free Jazz jamboree, complete with a spoken word delivery of a Sufi poem from Marsh himself. The album’s B-side is relegated to more traditional structures, and features some of the most driving piano, drum and saxophone playing fans of the genre could hope to hear; at once loose and decidedly collaborative in its delivery. Perhaps prompted by Marsh’s ten-year disappearance from the recording world, this long out of print recording has become a collector’s edition for those familiar with it. Original copies have been known to sell for more than $100 among collectors. Manufactured Recordings is proud to present this reissued volume again on vinyl for the first time in 40 years.

Child of Somebody is the new album from multi-award winning composer, producer and bass player Ross McHenry. Known for his work as bandleader of The Shaolin Afronauts as well as his 2013 First Word release ‘Distant Oceans’, Ross has been described as “The Future of Australian Jazz” (PBS FM) The album was recorded at Red Bull Studios in New York in mid-2015 alongside regular collaborators Mark de Clive Lowe, Myele Manzanza and Dylan Marshall as well as seasoned NYC players Marcus Strickland, Corey King, Tivon Pennicott and Duane Eubanks. The resulting album represents the arrival of a unique antipodean voice in modern jazz; one that sits comfortably alongside artists like Kamasi Washington and The Robert Glasper Experiment at the vanguard of contemporary improvised music. Child of Somebody is more than just a collection of compositions; it is an album in the truest sense. Thematically inspired by the world events that have dominated our headlines over the last 12 months this new body of work clearly represents an artistic and compositional progression since the release of Distant Oceans in 2013.

Ventil was formed in 2014 by Peter Kutin & Florian Kindlinger. Having previously worked together in the drone ensemble Dirac, releasing acclaimedrecords for labels such as the Japanese Spekk, Kutin & Kindlinger founded Ventil to expand their musical aesthetic. Collaborating with instrumentalists(in this case, drums and synths), they create an intense form of music that places itself somewhere between industrial, techno and ambient. Ventil is the German expression for 'valve' a device that releases pressure when opened; 'pressure' being the resistance against a limitation of space. Feeling limited within the artistic environment of the Vienna experimental music scene, Ventil was born in an isolated studio in the countryside, where the four musicians escaped to live and do primarily one thing: concentrate and create. As a result, the record is a unique sound that stands out from what is usually produced within the alpine nation of Austria. As if Varese co-operated with the Swans.Electro-acoustic music melts into a live band, sometimes hitting it hard, harsh and loud, but never losing focus on the essentials. Inbetween captivating structures of electronic sound architecture, Ventil drummer Katharina Ernst, uses minimal, yet effective choices of percussive signals, perfectly filling the gaps that the compositions offer. Ernst helps to push the sound into new territory, whilst delicate low-end bass often provides a solid foundation. The listener is sucked in and taken on an intense ride through different sonic corridors, until at last, after all the stones have been smashed to pieces, a lonesome synthesizer tune of obscure beauty leaves you once again alone. This LP was produced entirely at their remote studio in the outer reaches of Austria's rural areas, a peculiar place internationallyb known (if at all) for flooding catastrophes and stories of raccoon suicide. Far from the city's gossip and ego battles, away from the clubs and parties, leaving only a solitude and space to focus on producing music. The mastering of the LP was done by Douglas Henderson.Ventil are Peter Kutin (electronics, guitar), Florian Kindlinger (electronics, guitar, basssynth), Michael Lahner (synthesizers, electronics), Katharina Ernst (drums), Conny Zenk (light structures at live shows).
