"Leaving This Planet" originally released in 1974A heavily-played classic at David Mancuso's Loft parties, Charles Earland's "Leaving This Planet" encapsulates the visionary appropriation of the early NYC disco scene: an uptempo funky Jazz masterpiece that spoke to the precise moment of divine convergence that was NYC's underground dance community, and in so doing, secured it's place in the annals of musical and cultural immortality far beyond it's originally intended role. "Leaving This Planet" explicates both lyrically & musically, verbally and viscerally the basic platform of early club culture: a veritable antithetic to organized political action, and yet deeply political in it's own (possibly unconscious) right. A longing not just for immediate and total escape from the physical and spiritual plight of modern American urban poverty, but, in fact, an actually cohesive, organized and structured fraternity that applied a philosophy formulated from direct experience under the hardships of alienated material existence to the latter's objective stranglehold on passion, expression and cultural mobility, establishing a politics of the everyday that was practiced with tenacity and resolved, determined to abolish banal drudgery in favor of a new utopian vision: theoretical architecture constructed on top of the cold, estranging urban landscape of American inner-city plight. The early pioneers of NYC's underground have demonstrated for us continually through their example & legacy (which we should always reinvent & re-theorize for our own needs, of course) that to truly escape the hardships of this world requires an uncompromising exploitation of it's most base material simplicities, their direct reconstruction and re-appropriation, not for the continued service of the superstructures of economic and social division, but for the purposes of human need, human passion, human necessity: in service of LIFE.Compiled by Francis Englehardt & Paul Nickerson for slow/to\speak, featuring an exclusive B-Side by anti-philosopher DG9...there are no leaders...

Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy continued his early exploration of Thelonious Monk’s compositions on this 1961’s EVIDENCE Lacy worked extensively with Monk, absorbing the pianist’s intricate music and adding his individualist soprano saxophone mark to it. On this date, he employs the equally impressive Don Cherry on trumpet, who was playing with the Ornette Coleman quartet at the time, drummer Billy Higgins, who played with both Coleman and Monk, and bassist Carl Brown. Cherry proved capable of playing outside the jagged lines he formulated with Coleman, being just as complimentary and exciting in Monk’s arena with Lacy. Out of the six tracks, four are Monk’s compositions while the remaining are lesser known Ellington numbers: “The Mystery Song” and “Something to Live For” (co-written with Billy Strayhorn). Certainly one of his best releases during the '70s, Brown Rice is an album that takes the tripped-out spacey jazz sound he was working on, and adds some nice electric moments, with occasional slight touches of funkiness. It has a cool vibe and a tightness that only adds more to his great playing. Features guest appearances from Ricky Cherry on piano, and Frank Lowe on tenor sax."

Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the 30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions, by the 40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the 50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created on this side of the sun. This collection compiles Saturn singles and rare hard to find early Sun Ra in different forms/group settings including the Cosmic Rays, the Qualities, Sun Ra and his Myth-Science Arkestra, and more from 1955-1962. A must have for all true Sun Ra collectors, this is a comprehensive retrospective on the early days of this legendary music guru packed into a monstrous double LP.

One of the most prolific conga players in the history of Afro-Cuban music, Louis "Sabu" Martinez spent his childhood beating rhythms on tin cans on 111th Street in New York City's Spanish Harlem. In 1946, he began a long association with drummer Art Blakey, and joined Dizzy GIllespie's band by 1948, following the murder of the influential conga player Chano Pozo. Despite being such a much-in-demand session player, he struggled with heroin for years until he overcame his addiction in 1956, formed his new quintet and recorded three history-making albums in less than three years. Safari With Sabu, probably the most celebrated of Sabu's works, combines both African and Latin elements with the American Jazz tradition, resulting in the missing link between bop and Sun Ra. Recorded with three congas (including Ray Barreto), bongos, timbales and tympani, along with complementary tenor and baritone sax, trombone, and an unobtrusive bass presence by Oscar Pettiford, 1957's Safari With Sabu is now back on shiny 180gr vinyl again for your listening pleasure.

Conceived, as its predecessors, as the ideal musical accompaniment to a packed dance hall, “Blue Latin” reinterprets a musical genre – jazz, of course! - which even decades ago was considered the dance music ‘par excellence’, and delivers it, extremely modernized, to the present day, contaminated by Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Latin-jazz elements, all made fluid, compelling and above all… danceable! The almost-meditative “Incanto” combines spiritual jazz influences and African atmospheres.

Fish Feet is guitarist Ron English’s only date as a leader, which is remarkable for a career spanning more than 50 years—a career that has placed him in the company of legends of rock and R&B. From garage rock roots as a founding member of the Woolies, to tours backing the Four Tops, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Mary Wilson, English has enjoyed a storied life in music, effortlessly moving between genres with chameleon-like malleability.Jazz, however, is where English found his calling with 1970s work on Detroit’s Tribe and Strata labels that blended styles such as funk, be-bop, post be-bop and the freedom sound of the jazz avant-garde. It was a period of great “self-determination” he says, due to both labels’ reliance on artist autonomy and a do-it-yourself ethic that ensured if great effort was applied to any endeavor, the output would match. Fish Feet was such an effort.Recorded with a small ensemble of Strata brethren including Kenny Cox, Lyman Woodard, Larry Nozero and co-producer Charles Moore, English describes Fish Feet as something of a concept album—a romantic fantasy about longing for love. The Thom Bell and Linda Creed composition, “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” is a wonderful piece coming out of the R&B world and evidence of English’s broad taste, balanced by the group’s mutual love of the emotional weight of the music of Charles Mingus. Then there was the funk, which George Clinton and the Ohio Players were doing at neighboring Westbound Records.“Funk was in the air, and we did have to have a little bit of funk with what we were doing,” English says. “That’s what Fish Feet was about.”English penned all of the album’s original compositions, such as the lilting “Meadowlark” and the bluesy funk of the title track, and recruited a stellar horn section that included Nozero, Phil Ranelin, Norma Jean Bell and Marcus Belgrave. Nozero’s work on “Bees” and “Yet And Still” are among the highlights of the album, along with Bell’s solo on “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” English’s own unaccompanied acoustic playing on the Harry Barris and Gordon Clifford standard “I Surrender Dear” provides an exquisite close to a long-unreleased jewel of an album, and a piece that is an example of why the Strata canon is an essential entry in the story of Detroit music.“We tried to hit all aspects,” English says. “That’s why the label was called Strata, “because it was operating on several different Strata—several different layers.”As he reflects on recording the album, English is sad that many of his collaborators have died, unable to witness the fruits of their labor. Cox, Nozero and Woodard have passed on, “and I just hate that,” he says. Also gone is co-producer Moore, of whom English speaks highly.“Charles Moore had a wonderfully astute and gifted musical mind, and he understood what to do and how to make things work,” he says. “It was just a joy to work with him and to put this together with a good friend and musical brother.”English credits Cox and Moore with being the brain trust behind Strata, and is grateful that Fish Feet, which also features the cover art of Overton Lloyd, is a part of their legacy as well. “This is really good work,” he says. “Looking back, I’m kind of proud of what we did there.”

Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard really came into his own during this Blue Note session. He is matched with quite an all-star group (tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Elvin Jones in addition to Bernard McKinney on euphonium), introduces two of his finest compositions ("Birdlike" and "Crisis"), and is quite lyrical on his ballad feature, "Weaver of Dreams." Hubbard's sidemen all play up to par and this memorable session is highly recommended; it's one of the trumpeter's most rewarding Blue Note albums.

This is a limited edition of 500 copies!Budabeats Records presents four jazz inspired cuts from the early ‘60s. This period is not renowned for quality Hungarian music, however it gave birth to a handful of gems that sound world class, even today. The single features two tracks by Mária Toldy, and one track each by Nadja Beimel and Márta Szirmay. The common denominator is jazz, but it is blended with other styles such as Afro-Cuban, exotica and bossa nova. This bold, adventurous sound transcends the luke-warm clichés of dance music of the time. That’s why we felt it worth it to dust off these tough-to-find recordings and give them a new spin. The record comes in a custom designed picture sleeve, with two different sticker sets by Recordshack Distribution. You can create your very own and unique record by using the stickers accompanying the single.

This session is a model of the emotionally intense ballad programs featured on Prestige's Moodsville subsidiary. The great Kenny Burrell receives a major assist from saxophone patriarch Coleman Hawkins (who is in exemplary early-Sixties form), Hawkins' rhythm section of the time (made up exclusively of natives of Burrell's hometown Detroit) and conga drummer Ray Barretto. The choice of material and variety of settings are inspired, with Burrell heard solo on "No More", over just bass and drums on "Guilty", in two different settings and on three titles by the full sextet. Each soloist is fully engaged throughout, with things shifting into even higher gear when Burrell and Hawkins converse on "Montono Blues" and "I Thought About You".

For nearly a quarter-century, beginning in 1950, tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons (1925-1974) was among the brightest stars in the Prestige Records firmament. Whether leading, or partaking in, one of Prestige’s jam sessions, immersing himself in the organ-dominated blues and gospel grooves that in the 1950s came to be called 'soul jazz', or digging deep for heart-rending ballads, Ammons was multiply masterful. And in 1960, leading a quintet featuring the impeccable pianist Tommy Flanagan, plus Ray Barretto’s piquant congas, he produced the insuperable "Boss Tenor".From the blues that drips from “Hittin’ The Jug” and “Blue Ammons” to the infectious medium bounce of the standards “Close Your Eyes” and “Canadian Sunset”, and from the sophisticated swing of “Stompin’ At The Savoy” to the finger-poppin’ bop of “Confirmation” and the after-hours balladry of “My Romance”, "Boss Tenor" has something for everyone claiming to be a fan of modern jazz.

Kenny Burrell's guitar artistry is well-documented in his years with Oscar Peterson and on his first dates as a leader on the Blue Note label, but "God Bless The Child", his only date for CTI in 1971, is an under-heard masterpiece in his catalogue. Burrell's band for the set includes bassist Ron Carter, percussionist Ray Barretto, Richard Wyands on piano, flutist Hubert Laws, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and drummer Billy Cobham. CTI's house arranger, Don Sebesky, assembled and conducted the strings in a manner that stands strangely and beautifully apart from his other work on the label. Sebesky understood Burrell's understated approach to playing guitar. Burrell didn't belong with the fusioneers, but he could groove better than any of them. Sebesky built a moody, atmospheric soundscape behind him, one that was as impressionistic as it was illuminating of a player who could dig in and chop it up -- as he does on his own composition "Love Is the Answer" and "Do What You Gotta Do" -- and stroke it smooth and mellow as on the title track, the truly sublime "Be Yourself", and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born". This is Burrell at his level best as a player to be sure, but also as a composer and as a bandleader. Magnificent. Received a 7.2 rating from Pitchfork. They say:Best known for defining the pulse of Fela Kuti’s propulsive Afrobeat sound, the self-taught Tony Allen is a near superhuman combination of metronomic sense of time, light touch, economy, endurance, and musicality. Though it took a long time, his distinctive beat is part of the world’s musical vocabulary now. Since parting ways with Fela, he’s done quite a range of work, including a couple of recent, fairly high-profile collaborations with Damon Albarn that took him pretty far away from the pigeonhole people tend to place him in on the basis of his best-known playing. Film of Life doesn’t quite break new ground for Allen, but it does offer a pretty solid and succinct demonstration of Afrobeat’s adaptability to changing times. There are no side-long epics in the Fela mold here, but Allen packs quite a bit into each of these four-to-seven-minute-tracks, building up from his own drums grooves with hypnotic guitar and bass patterns, a richly arranged horn section, and an assortment of other sounds that are nearly all overwhelmed by the massive rhythm that dominates everything.
