Genre:Organic Grooves
"As the 1960s came to a close, Miles Davis hadbegun to drift away from traditional jazz music, as hissecond ""quintet"" period reached an end. He hadbeen toying with jazz fusion in live settings, and onhis two 1968 releases Miles In The Sky and Filles deKilimanjaro. Then came 1969's In A Silent Way, anexperimental work of jazz music, clocking in at nearly40 minutes, stretched across four tracks. An albumwhich featured revolutionary production and editingtechniques, (Courtesy of frequent Davis producerand collaborator Teo Macero) and contributions frommany of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, among them were Herbie Hancock on keys, WayneShorter on saxophone, Tony Williams on drums, andthen newcomer John McLaughlin, who would go onto form the acclaimed Mahavishnu Orchestra. With such an eclectic sound, and a stunning array oftalent, contemporary reviewers didn't know at firstwhat to think of In A Silent Way. Many jazz criticsconsidered Davis' merging of genres to be a betrayalof tradition, while rock critics reacted ecstatically.(Rolling Stone's own Lester Bangs once referred toIn A Silent Way as ""the kind of album that gives youfaith in the future of music."") Over time criticalreception to the album improved dramatically, andthe album is largely considered one of Davis' finestachievements, and a significant piece of jazz history. An album that foresaw where the genre was headedand gleefully embraced the future, setting the stagefor greater things to come, as Miles Davis enteredthe 1970s."

LP | 1974 | US | Reissue (Get On Down)

Release:1974 / US – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Starting in the late 60s, jazz music started to take an interesting, and very soulful turn. Influenced by the funk of the day – from James Brown to Sly & The Family Stone – the artform, generally not considered a funky musical genre, started to stretch out and fit into the times. It was a fertile era, and to reciprocate, funk, soul and groovy rock fans started to discover accomplished, open-minded jazz artists like Les McCann, whose tunes made sense to their ears, even if bebop hadn’t grabbed them. This incredible album – long a favorite of forward-thinking hip-hop producers and DJs – washes over listeners from the first chords of the incredible album opener, “Sometimes I Cry,” led by McCann’s array of analog synthesizers and backed by an excellent rhythm section (Donald Dean on drums; Ralph McDonald on percussion and Jimmy Rowser on bass). Truth be told, highlights are hard to pick out, but fans never go long without returning to the fuzzed-out funk of “The Harlem Buck Strut Dance,” “Let’s Play (Til Mom Calls)” and “It Never Stopped In My Hometown.” These keyboard-drenched grooves sat alongside record stacks brimming with Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye’s 70s soul and, of course, Miles Davis’ space funk experiments of the era (like Bitches Brew). Whether you’re new to Layers or just updating a well-loved and heavily worn-out copy, throw this one on, light one up and lose yourself for an hour…or even a couple days, if you have the option.

Plug Me In
LP | 1968 | US | Reissue (Get On Down)
21,99 €*
Release:1968 / US – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Saxophonist Eddie Harris – a favorite sample staple of jazz-leaning hip-hop producers of the ‘90s – was a very busy man in the 1960s, releasing albums at a brisk pace since his first as a leader in 1961. By the late ‘60s he had fully hit his stride, as both a performer and an innovator.A case in point is heard very clearly on this gem from Harris’ expansive catalog – 1968’s Plug Me In, which features his pioneering use of the Varitone saxophone effects processor unit (first heard on his 1967 album, The Tender Storm). The effect, used on “It’s Crazy” and “Ballad (For My Love),” never gets in the way, but gives the proceedings a feeling of “the next.” 1968 saw jazz entering a new era, influenced by electronic advances as well as the soul music dominating the pop charts of the day. Plug Me In slid perfectly into the vanguard of the day. There is a soulful warmth to the proceedings on this classic LP, starting with album opener “Live Right Now,” which builds and swirls to a beautiful crescendo, with notes ricocheting back and forth amongst a top level crew of players including Jodie Christian, Chuck Rainey and Richard Smith. “Lovely Is Today” and “It’s Crazy” also feature waves of sunshiney brass and group interplay, alongside album ballads like “Winter Meeting” and “Ballad (For My Love).”Eddie Harris’ catalog can be daunting, considering his impressive input throughout the 60s and 70s, but there’s a reason fans old and new come back to Plug Me In again and again. Innovation and soul is a combination that never fails, and this reissue is destined to bring more fans into the fold.

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen leads a quartet consisting of pianist Yonathan Avishai, bassist Barak Mori, and drummer Nasheet Waits. A year after his impressionistic, critically-lauded ECM debut Into The Silence, trumpeter Avishai Cohen's Cross My Palm With Silver introduces a program of new pieces which put the focus on the ensemble, on teamwork, with a quartet of the highest caliber. The adroit, almost telepathic interplay among the musicians allows Avishai Cohen to soar, making it clear why he is one of the most talked-about jazz musicians on the contemporary scene. "All of these people together are my dream team", says the charismatic trumpeter of fellow players Yonathan Avishai, Barak Mori and Nasheet Waits, who share his sense for daring improvisation and his feeling for structure. "I feel we're in a perfect place with the balance. It's open and there's so much room for the improvisation to take the music any place we can. At the same time the composition is very specific and the vibe is very direct and thought about." As with Into The Silence, Cross My Palm With Silver was produced by Manfred Eicher at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France.180g Vinyl LP comes with download code.Musicians:Avishai Cohen, trumpetYonathan Avishai, pianoBarak Mori, double bassNasheet Waits, drums

For his third ECM release as a leader, Chris Potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. The group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ECM s many recordings from New York over the past decade: keyboardist David Virelles, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. “The Dreamer Is the Dream” features Potter on tenor saxophone the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation in the striking opener Heart in Hand and such album highlights as Yasodhara, as well as on soprano sax (“Memory and Desire”) and bass clarinet (the title track). Potter is an artist who employs his considerable technique in service of music rather than spectacle, says The New Yorker, and his composing develops in texture and atmosphere with every album. Along with his previous ECM releases, “Imaginary Cities” and “The Sirens”, he has appeared on some of the label's most acclaimed discs, including Paul Motian's classic “Lost in a Dream” and Dave Holland's Grammy Award-winning “What Goes Around”.

During the '60s and '70s, three distinguished gentlemen who had built their careers playing French-made exotic jazz (Roger Roger, Nino Nardini and orchestra leader Eddie Warner) met each evening in the Ganaro recording studio. They mainly experimented -or simply played- with keyboards that looked like prototypes of spaceships. Flying high on whimsical and joyful inspiration, the improbable trio used their strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that, at that time, resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights that resulted from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions.

Over the course of four albums, Manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the UK music scene as one of it's brightest talents. His languid, soulful music has won friends from Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson to Jazz FM and Mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. His label Gondwana Records is home to GoGo Penguin and his own albums have found Halsall exploring the modal jazz of John and Alice Coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late '50s and early '60s or most recently on Fletcher Moss Park drawing on Eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. His latest album When The World Was One is something of a companion piece to Fletcher Moss Park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on Halsall's love of spiritual jazz and Eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in Japan. Beautifully recorded at Hasall's favourite studio, 80 Hertz in Manchester, and engineered by Brendan Williams and George Atkins it features the recording debut of Halsall's large ensemble, The Gondwana Orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and Eastern scales to create a global palate for Halsall's life-affirming sounds.

Masterpieces in Deep/Modal/Spiritual Jazz from a teenaged wunderkind, recorded and released from 1968-1970. P.E. Hewitt was 16 years old when he recorded and released – in a pressing of 50 copies – his debut album "Jawbones". By the time he sold through the 100 copies of this third, "Winter Winds", he was approaching the ripe-age of 20. The three albums he and his young compatriots wrote, recorded, pressed and – if you can call it that – distributed, are three of the rarest damn-good 70's Jazz albums you could ever hope to come across. That’s a subtle, but important distinction. There are many rare Jazz albums in every imaginable subgenre, but Hewitt’s three albums were so damn good that neither micro presses nor forty years of silence could suppress their reemergence.
