Originally released on Studio !K7 Records in 1998, Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister's groundbreaking release, 'The K&D Sessions' reset the bar for what could be achieved in a compilation. Across an array of original tracks, dubs and infamous ‘K&D Session’ remixes, the DJ and producer duo took the listener on a smoke-filled blunted journey that flowed flawlessly. Often compared to DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' for it's similarly deft craft of rhythm and quoted by Allmusic as "the most blissfully blunted music the world has ever heard", the album has sold over 1,000,000 copies to date and was included in Spin’s ‘Top 20 albums of 1999’. The album has long since been deleted on Vinyl with original 4LP sets changing hands for €300+ on the collectors market and even a bootleg vinyl copy will set a buyer back over €100. Sixteen years later, this legendary album will be available as a long overdue 5LP reissue remastered by Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. Finally back in print in 180g vinyl.

DJ Koze comes up to task for the next re-construction of Michael Mayer & Joe Goddard's ‘For You', following up from the re-interpretation by Diynamic's Solomun and Pachanga Boys. The maverick of flawless productions develops two narratives for this remix package: The first is a club mix composed of layered, floor-raising chords while ruffling up the original vocals gradually and elegantly. The second is a Mbira remix, filled with African-inspired percussive inklings and sprinkled with effortless melodic flourishes. With two accompanying instrumental versions, DJ Koze takes us to the final curtain, closing the end chapter to Michael Mayer's acclaimed ‘&' project.

Kerri Chandler is house music royalty, and he is next to take the reins of the ever essential DJ-kicks mix series. His sumptuous selection is out on October 20th and arrives with a substantial release tour that includes a launch party at this year's ADE. Without New Jersey native Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler, house—specifically deep house—would sound very different. Ever since his teens he has been making and playing music with a unique sense of soul, jazz and deepness. From majors like Atlantic, King Street Sounds and Nervous via his own Madhouse, his releases are never short of genre-defining classics that have spawned a thousand copycats. Affectionately referred to as the Stevie Wonder of house, Kerri's DJ sets take him all over the world and often find him playing live keys next to his informed selections. He's meticulous about sound, too, which means that no-ones kicks hit quite like Kerri's.His instantly classic and timeless DJ-kicks mix, though, takes him out of the club and through a world of influences and inspirations. It's like me taking you for a walk in New York,' he says. Like a music tour guide, we go through Brooklyn, Soho, midtown, the Bronx and Uptown, and parts of New Jersey.'The resulting selection is an unhurried and very personal mixtape with blends, fades and cuts all allowing the music to do the talking. At various points throughout, we hear Kerri speaking into the mic, and that only adds to the feeling that you are sat in his living room as he pulls out all his favourite cuts. He also lays down some of his magical keys at various points, lending yet more personality to the mix.

Matthew Dear is a man of many musical hats. A co-founder of the revered Ghostly International and Spectral Sound labels, Dear has a wide reaching discography under a number of aliases, including face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion (whose Alpha LP was released on !K7 earlier this year). Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special. DJ-Kicks is Dear's first work under his own name in some time. The mix proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left-of-centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. DJ-Kicks also includes three exclusive new tracks; two as Audion, and one Matthew Dear original.

Marcel Dettmann has mixed the latest edition of the highly respected DJ-Kicks compilation series. Whilst Dettmann is well-known for his incendiary sets at his residency at Berghain, his DJ-Kicks mix is crafted for listening, and displays a more reflective side of the DJ and producer. The mix explores a wide array of selections from various subgenres; ranging from the a new vocal-led Strictly Rhythm release, to rapping on Clarence G’s 1991 release ‘Cause I Said It Right’, recently reissued by Clone Records.Over the course of its 1hr 14 duration, Dettmann reveals multiple new original productions; most notably a collaboration with Levon Vincent, ‘Can You See It’. The pair have collaborated once in the past, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015 to critical acclaim. ‘Can You See It’ sees the duo venture into darker territory; a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix. Dettmann also collaborates with MDR affiliate Wincent Kunth on ’Possible Step’. In addition to five brand new original Dettmann remixes and edits, there’s an unreleased remix of Marcel’s ‘Let’s Do It’ from Ostgut Ton labelmate Rolando. Designed to be enjoyed by both the critics and more casual listeners, this mix is the latest in a long series of lifetime achievements over the course of Dettmann’s career – and with so many new unreleased original Marcel Dettmann productions included, this is a landmark release for the producer.

Over the past decade, Seth Troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. Growing up between Detroit and Chicago, his musical education carries enviable credentials, with his stepdad a local radio personality who championed the early sounds of house music.True to Troxler’s character, the mix has a whimsical nature and a thoughtful and timeless narrative, bearing a tenacious episode for the DJ-Kicks series that gives a true insight into the man behind the well-preened moustache and cowboy antics. “It might seem obvious but to be a successful DJ, you have to be really into music,” Troxler points out. “Collecting music is my life. This is a proper DJ mix – a house mix. It’s good music that works to listen to at any time.”“For my DJ Kicks mix I wanted to do something that was honest,” he goes on. “I went out in the morning, micro-dosed myself and did all these errands around town. Then I came home at night and did the mix one take. I wanted to curate something for people to easily listen to, that was nice, and funny and got you in the mood to do your homework, or drive that hour long trip when you need to go somewhere. I see this mix as a gay man named Rodney. Or a big black woman named Birtha.”

The DJ-Kicks series was born in Berlin in 1995, the first officially licensed DJ mix series available commercially. Over the past 20 years, the series has maintained a steady finger on the pulse of electronic music, earning a reputation as an essential barometer for what’s happening right now in the world of dance music. To celebrate the 50th entry in the series, we’ve brought the series back to Germany with a very special mix from the iconoclastic DJ Koze.Characteristically refusing to hew to any particular genre or style, Koze’s mix nonetheless creates a uniform color, incorporating underground hip-hop, melodic techno, indie pop, and vintage songwriting for a selection of tracks that is at once nostalgic and futuristic, melancholy and joyful. In order to incorporate a variety of styles, Koze created a number of custom edits and blends for the set. He also takes a novel approach to the concept of a “mix,” often eschewing long overlays in favor of serendipitous juxtapositions. “During the day I don’t have the requirement of hearing anything mixed in strict time,” he says. “Instead I focus on harmoniousness. The idea is more to create the appearance of a radio show, in the vein of John Peel for example. There is a giant cosmos of music running through my filter.”DJ-Kicks also includes a new DJ Koze original, in the form of the dilla-esque “I Have Not Been Everywhere But It’s On My List.” With its fragile soul samples, pinched, anxious-expressive vocal snippets, and sweet guitar riffs, the track sets a luxurious tone for the mix. The mood is gentle, laid back, extremely open and willingly to take risks.Special white vinyl

Alan Abrahams was written over the last two years, during the emotional break up of a relationship and the formation of a new one, and that is very much conveyed throughout. Says the man himself, “this album is also a natural progression from dance music into something akin to a mutated musical style that incorporates stuff I listen to all the time such as classical, African and new jazz.” This album is also noteworthy from the off in that it places Portable’s own vocals front and centre, as well as showcasing some very real song writing skills that makes for music that stands up to listening in many different contexts, not just the club. The album also comes with some of Abrahams’ own piano playing, as well as a number of music videos he has made himself.

Portable is Alan Abrahams, a South African born artist and producer who is also a celebrated live act. Emerging more than fifteen years ago with a sound that marries real electronic soul with deep moods and abstract grooves, he is someone who has released his minimal wares on cult labels like Perlon and Live At Robert Johnson, as well as his own Süd Electronic. Always experimenting with rhythm and imbuing his music with a wide world of influences, this latest work that proves that once more. Portable’s music reached a new level of exposure when the 2014 track "Surrender” received a "Best New Track” designation from Pitchfork, and appeared in re-edited form on DJ Koze’s critically acclaimed DJ-Kicks mix (named the #1 mix of 2015 by Resident Advisor). Portable signed to !K7, and is to release his sixth full length artist album through the label in August 2016. The 11 track affair is his most personal yet, and as such is a self-titled work that features plenty of his own vocal work, as well as some choice collaborations. The first 12″ single sees Deetron and Bodycode deliver remixes alongside exclusive track ‘Balanese Nights’ that doesn’t feature on the full length album.

Matthew Dear’s Audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism, realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. Growing out of the vibrant DIY Detroit underground, Audion and his contemporaries were free to feed off the energy reverberating from UK and European dancefloors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. An Audion release is techno in it’s purest sense - whether it’s pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dancefloor out of control or elegantly toying with just a few sonic elements. ‘Alpha’ is Audion’s first artist album in 10 years and comes at the end of a period of fevered activity. The collective body of work standing as a marker in time and a defining moment in the life of the artist. Drowning out the noise of the outside world, ‘Alpha’ was a puzzle pieced together sonically in the shadows and wildly brought to life in a matter of weeks. The artwork for ‘Alpha’ has again been realised by Will Calcutt, Dear’s long time collaborator, who has a visual plan for the music that matches the sonic vision, completing the final critical piece of the puzzle. DaM-FunK is the kind of guy who seems like he’d make great company: laid-back, affable, personable. But to truly get the guy, to really understand him, is to know a deep love of music like no other. Dam’s contribution to the DJ-Kicks series gives you an opportunity to do just that. It’s a snapshot view into the mind of the pioneer of Modern-Funk music… DJ-Kicks invites you to get to know the man behind the shades.Dam makes a lifetime of digging and absorbing music that feels as laid-back as the Santa Ana breeze. Years ago, he coined the term ‘Modern Funk’ to give context to his music. The elements of the synth-heavy and multi-layered style are gloriously displayed on DJ-Kicks. “Modern-Funk is a combination of all the sounds on the mix,” he explains. “Funk, Boogie, Electro, House, Modern-Soul, Ambient tones… a push and pull of nostalgia and progressiveness…”At a satisfying 19 songs, DâM-FunK’s DJ-Kicks lets grooves breathe. This is a mix to happily get lost within; a document in vibe. Unexpected contemporary joints mingle with lost gems from unlikely places. The exclusive DâM-FunK production “Believer” makes its debut on DJ-Kicks, an extensive instrumental composition that on it’s own could only be classified as signature Modern-Funk. The mix also includes Dam’s excellent collaboration with Nite Jewel, as ‘Nite-Funk,’ on “Can U Read Me?”

Scoring a top 10 hit (as Breach has this summer with “Jack”) is a dream come true for most musicians. It also must be a little bit strange though, especially for an artist with the history and depth that Breach (a/k/a Ben Westbeech) has. In fact, the Breech project was originally conceived as an underground counterpart to the Westbeech’s work under his given name. “The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place,” he says. “I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on.”It’s those same “deep records” that are showcased on Breach’s new DJ-Kicks mix; which deftly incorporates everything from €2 basement finds (in the form of Winx – “How’s The Music”) to spanking new tracks from some of Westbeech’s contemporaries, and of course, a new original Breach track made specifically for the mix. “I’ve grown up with DJ Kicks,” Westbeech says. “For me it’s a very important series and I didn’t want to throw it together at a time when I’ve never been as busy. It came at a pretty crazy point in my life, but I feel I’ve done myself justice with it.”

Digitalism has done a mix for the legendary K7! DJ Kicks series. And it is not a lie, on the contrary, it is nothing short of the truth to say, this is a dream come true for two young fellows from Germany. Twelve years ago, when they originally met, two record store workers in Hamburg, admiringly selling the DJ Kicks series to their customers adoring not just the event of each release, the dexterity of the mix but most importantly the protagonists behind each release, the artist, the DJ, the mixer. Their favourites over the last two decades are Tiga's ("His mix was a great essence of edgy and cold electro-techno."), Trevor Jackson's Playgroup ("More really playful stuff.") and Erlend Oye ("Cause he sung over a lot of stuff and had some favs like Jürgen Paape, the collab with Morgan Geist and Avenue D (2D2F) on it.").Summer 2012 is their time, now they have to prove it themselves. To make it short, this mix has it all! They move sometimes slow and easy, in other moments ecstatic and without second thoughts through the tracks. Thereby their attitude jumps between impetuous and cocky, as the sounds hit challengingly between electro rock and synth-pop, new wave and trance, techno and disco punk and pop glamour. On this journey they include tracks by Opptimo, Alex Gopher, WhoMadeWhoe, Kölsch, Vitalic, to name a few, alongside exclusive tracks and new material from the band themselves.Moelle and Tüfekçi wanted to represent their past as DJs, their "sonic universe" as they call it. The target was to unite new Digitalism music and "timeless pieces that describe us and our sound."But how did they start with choosing the other tracks for the mix? Like everybody else would do: They made a list of all the magic tracks coming to mind over the last decade. As they used to work in a record store, they of course have it all on vinyl, but at home, and as the Digitalism were quite busy touring the last year, with 90 performances all over the world, they had to do it the internet nerd way and Google themselves into a trance. The Majority of the chosen music is from friendly associated labels and producers, cleverly mixed up with tracks by models of the past. "Some stuff that we chose from the early 2000s clash era got lost in a jungle of major label licensing bureaucracy, and for one or two years we've been playing our edit of Simple Minds' "I travel" and would have loved to finally pass this on to the outside world, but you know, bootleg things you've done with the real big names are usually just off the table.“ But they were both absolutely happy with the final material they got for the mix. From that point on intuition took over and led them into a very melodic mix, perfect for "a sundowner drink" as they say themselves. "We can imagine this running around late afternoon/sundown. By the time it gets dark, you can dive deeper into the music."

In the 17 years since it started in 1995 with CJ Bolland's scene-defining techno set, via landmark releases by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Smith & Mighty and Kemistry & Storm, it's established a reputation for quality, forward-thinking mixes by dance music's big names. That's a statement that holds just as true for the last five years, which has seen UK synth poppers Hot Chip, New York retro-futurists The Juan MacLean and London dubstep icon Kode 9, amongst many others, add their weight to the franchise.A big part of DJ Kicks idea is the exclusive track on each album: every artist doing DJ Kicks has to write and include a piece of music that's not available anywhere else. The second Exclusives album, follow-up to the first collection released in 2006, collates all 14 of those DJ Kicks-only moments from the last five years. The result is as wide ranging and eclectic as the series itself. Kieren 'Four Tet' Hebden turns in a stunning performance on Pockets, fusing clattering live percussion to sweeps of analogue synth and swirling electronics. My Piano sees Hot Chip on fine form, weaving the piano of the song title into one of their trademark synth pop grooves. Meanwhile The Juan MacLean conjure up a mammoth ten-minute slow-burn dancefloor bomb that starts with a bubbling Giorgio Moroder-style arpeggio and builds to a crescendo as glassy keys are piled on in multiple layers and Nancy Wang sings "You like it when it's too much". One of the strongest DJ Kicks mixes of recent times is that by London expatriate Scuba, who now lives in Berlin. His track M.A.R.S. bridges the two cities, taking the techno aesthetic of his adopted home and grafting it onto a breakbeat steeped in his dubstep roots. Then there's Triangle Folds by techno wünderkind James Holden, a mind-bending digital flight of fancy beamed in from the outer rim of human consciousness. Oh, and Photek's new exclusive track taken from his forthcoming mix, the 39th incidentally, which is due out next year. Surprisingly, perhaps, for an album compiled from sources with no connection other than DJ Kicks, which by its nature is a broad church, it hangs together satisfyingly. well. The common element? This is the sound of electronic music's great and good at their very best. It's what DJ Kicks is all about. Long may it continue.

The Apparat contribution is as stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden; with Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his personality and his brave take on 'club' music. With an incredibly prevalent talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn - whose 'Miniluv' provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice Baumel's 'Sub' - and Ramadanman's 'Tempest' - whose melody all but dissipates at the optimum moment - layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from across an array of genres from Autechre's percussive white noise to Oval's erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o's 'Intervall'.

Kode 9’s grasp on the throat of bass music in 2010 is almost unparalleled. His trend setting record label, Hyperdub, is in its sixth year of viral contagion; he’s become a published author on the theory of sound abuse and sonic frequencies being used as weaponry in his book ‘Sonic Warfare’ and his production work has mutated from an almost simplistic marriage of beats and sine waves into a fusion of dancefloor Ebonics and discordant synths. Becoming a figurehead of UK dance music hasn’t been a quick process, and Kode9’s single-mindedness has contributed in some way to his notoriety, but it’s simply his tireless work as a record label boss and A&R that has marked him out as one of the most powerful ears within the scene. Probably best known to the wider global audience as the label that gave birth to two genre defining albums from Burial, Hyperdub has become one of the most reliably testing labels out there. Just as likely to release a glut of two and a half minute beat sketches from American beat maker Samiyam or Zomby as sprawling house opuses from Brixton bass bin temptress Cooly G, the label is at the forefront of innovation and it’s something that he has infused into his volume of the DJ-KiCKS series. “Very simply, [the mix is] just a snapshot of my DJ sets at the first half of 2010,” he says calmly. “It’s definitely not an exploration of my musical heritage, but it’s not all new stuff. It probably signifies something about my relationship to dubstep that the mix only has a few dubstep tunes in it, and is instead a mix of UK funky, broken beat, dubstep, grime and some R&B. Unfortunately, I fear some listeners, because of my background, will think that all the tracks are just mutations of dubstep.” Starting off in serene fashion with Nottingham producer Lone’s upbeat exploration of steel drum snatches on ‘Once In A While’, Kode9 dives into the percussive textures of Dutch producer Aardvarck before steering the mix into a duo of his own productions.
