Jerry Naylor was the Crickets’ lead singer in the first half of the 60s. By 1965 he was a solo act, recording with Mike Curb in Los Angeles. They produced this evocative, blue-eyed soul sound which was picked up by Northern Soul DJs in the late 70s and became hugely popular - especially with the dancers. It gained further fans when included on the Kent LP “Right Back Where We Started From” and will be welcomed as a Kent 7”. The flip is another Mike Curb production, only discovered in the last decade and a top tune for the rare soul brigade.

Though Spencer Wiggins did not make the R&B charts until his Fame 45 ‘Double Lovin’’ in 1970, it is his eight Goldwax singles, released in the latter half of the 60s, for which he is rightly famous among soul fans. They epitomise Memphis soul, veering from deep melancholic ballads to raucous uptempo groovers.Wiggins’ fans dig every aspect of his music; his voice is ideal for the southern soul sound. That genre is close to the blues and ‘Lover’s Crime’, his first 45 on the Bandstand subsidiary, was an early Isaac Hayes composition of that ilk. ‘Sweet Sixteen’, which was unreleased until 1977, is a full-on blues, but presumably not issued by Goldwax as they wanted to keep Spencer known as a soul singer, even though he excels on the number. Goldwax’s strong country influence is apparent on ‘I Never Loved A Woman (The Way I Love You)’ which certainly rivals Aretha’s breakthrough single from a couple of years previously. ‘Once In A While (Is Better Than Never At All)’, written by ex-country singer and Goldwax boss Quinton Claunch and George Jackson’s ‘Old Friend’ are also in the country bag. The dramatic ballad ‘Uptight Good Woman’ was penned by Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson and is probably Wiggins’ best-known recording; it is a highlight of his live performances. Penn and Oldham also provided ‘Take Me Just As I Am’, another stand-out track. ‘He’s Too Old’ and ‘I’m A Poor Man’s Son’ are vibrant, warm-hearted numbers taken at a jaunty pace, still very much southern soul; ‘Lonely Man’ is the only song which hints at Detroit’s influence and has consequently cost Wiggins’ 45 collectors appreciably more than the norm. Wiggins’ career suffered by being in the shadows of James Carr at Goldwax and that may have been the reason why Claunch, a very fair-minded man, let this superb singer move to nearby Fame, along with some Goldwax tracks they had already cut on him in those studios. He also had artistic success at Sounds of Memphis in 1973; unissued tracks from there as well as Goldwax have strengthened his reputation. He is primarily a preacher now but his 2010 appearance at the Cleethorpes rare soul weekender demonstrated he is still a great performer and he recently completed a successful two-date visit to London and Manchester with his brother, manager and fellow singer Percy.

Mary Love’s vocals top and tailed the first two ground-breaking UK Kent LPs in 1982 and she has had a place in the hearts of Kent collectors ever since. Her twelve solo recordings for Los Angeles’ Modern label covered the golden age of soul music – 1965 to 1967 – and varied from her famous uptempo, Motown-inspired, dance tracks to beautiful ballads, raunchy blues-based numbers and even a gospel-tinged rave up on ‘Dance Children Dance’.We have collected them all onto a vinyl LP for the first time and added two highlights from her self-produced, soulful gospel tracks, recorded in the 80s. That era was indeed her second coming, musically as well as spiritually. ‘Come Out Of The Sandbox’ from that period has taken on anthemic status among European soul fans. ‘You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet’, ‘Lay This Burden Down’ and ‘Let Me Know’ have already achieved that standing among Northern Soul fans, who have danced along for fifty years. The more tender side of her work can be heard in Ashford and Simpson’s ballad ‘Baby I’ll Come’ and her only Modern hit, the sensual ‘Move A Little Closer’, is another show-stopper. The album cover is a must for connoisseurs of glamorous coiffure.

Southern soul singer Z.Z. Hill was Kent/Modern’s main artist in the latter half of the 60s. In 1967 the company recorded him on an LP of soul classics and rightly chose Bettye Swann’s hit from only a few months before as one of the tracks. The label may have missed a commercial trick as his male-angle on the marvellous song gave it a new dimension and would surely have fared well as a 45. The UK licensors Action Records spotted the song’s potential and it was well received, although the much smaller UK soul market of the time could rarely achieve big sales. Since its release more soul fans have become aware of its quality and at last it is available again for discerning collectors. Peggy Woods’ classic Northern Soul stomper was first on 45 in 1988 as a 100 Club anniversary single. With only approximately 400 pressed it was inevitable this and other such singles would become sought-after. Here is Peggy in her original glory singing her Kent/Modern masterpiece.

The Puffs’ Doré release has been known and collected for years but recent plays have caused the demand for this disc to soar. The Superbs’ flip was so rare it was assumed it existed only as a master tape, until a rare 45 emerged in the early 2000s. Plays from the soul cognoscenti since then have made it a big sound at rare soul gatherings.

The Checkerboard Squares’ ‘Double Cookin’’ is a byword for the Northern Soul all-nighters of the 70s, when several hundred dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. Kent’s discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties and we feature the Tandels’ all-girl take on a song they had already recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure Jam-Cha label.
