Amsterdam based Leyla records presents part two of it's various artists compilation, this time bringing together a host of international artists, as well as a contribution from label boss Chafik Chennouf. The four tracker commences with Insufferable People from label regular Manni Dee. Following his spectacular EP on Perc Trax, Dee delivers a dancefloor roller containing punctilious sound design integral to his work, with vocals from the artist superimposed over crunchy drums, riding the waves of submerged synths.Track two from France's Von Grall offers a similar treat for DJs, this time with more introspective elements working in harmony with with propulsive polyrhythms. As the track creeps forward the revelation of drones and synth lines further involves the listener and contributes to a musical landscape populated by rhythmically independent segments, coalescing to form a cogent whole.Head honcho Chafik Chennouf injects light in to the darkness on the B1 with Kosmai, redolent of EBM style funk rhythms. The stolid arpeggios function as the foundation for percussive interplay which propel the track in to new territory as it progresses. The 90s rave influence becomes apparent as the automations mould and shape the multidimensional lead. The closer, Useless Landscape, from Japan's Katsunori Sawa immediately immerses the listener as the concrete groove is quickly overtaken by field recordings and a unique tonality emerging through layered drones and warped artefacts. Reminiscent of his work with Yuji Kondo as Steven Porter, the track unveils an intimacy through detail, while maintaing distance through evolving layers of sound creating mystery and magic.

Following releases from Manni Dee and JoeFarr & Martyn Hare, Leyla Records presents four uncompromising new tracks from English duo Witch. Induction Hardened Bedways is a gritty and tough techno workout from two young talents that represent Leyla's dedication to recapturing the authentic feeling of the music with a modern touch. The A-side opens with ‘Zpkf’, an hypnotising production that feels smothered with sand paper, its slow build erupting into a cacophonous battle between rhythm and leads that leaves the listener stranded on the dancefloor, unable to do anything but move forward into the music. ‘Okhstk’ follows with a more traditional approach though the sound remains just as rugged with distortion obscuring the edges of the rhythm while melodic pressure mounts until it can seemingly no longer be contained but ultimately refuses to explode. On the B-side ‘Flec’ starts with a steady, marching rhythm, the distorted kick drum somewhere in the vicinity of your hearing until all of a sudden it's in front of you and you can't escape its momentum. Once again Witch play with your senses, stacking rhythmic and melodic elements in a way that seems haphazard yet proves to be a clever trap that locks you into their own twisted sonic world. The EP closes with ‘Vosmr’, another slow-building, buzzing production with no distinctive edge that lures you in and swallows you whole. Induction Hardened Bedways offers a fresh take on techno across its four tracks showing that the original spirit of the music is alive and well, and still capable of shocking and surprising.

Leyla's 'Parallels & Influences EP' brings together Mondkopf, Positive Centre, Codex Empire & Yuji Kondo for an assaulting 4 tracks of power infused and industrial strength techno. Mondkopf starts things roling with militaristic snare rolls and off-kilter analog synthesis into a climatic fervor of dystopian scene-scaping. This then is followed upu energetically by the pounding pressure and liquid 303 squelches of Positive Centre's 'Rub'. Crushed out cymbals battle against booming sub bass as a foghorn call rides high above the tempestuous patterns. Codex Empire's 'Hessdalen' is as slick and detailed as it is ruff and raw. Huge sweeping backgrounds with intense high end percussion lick over a stomping, staggered kick pattern. Yuji Kondo (one half of the excellent Steven Porter project with Katsunori Sawa) brings things to a close with 'Whip Blow'. Bringing his signature refusal for traditional percussion sources - this peaking track pits high level technicality against deeply hypnotic and brooding rhythm.

Shadows aka AnD remerge after their unforgettable debut on Shifted's Avian imprint in 2012. The long awaited return finds its home on Leyla Records, in the form of four diverse yet cohesive experimental cuts that take the listener on a journey through the oppressive, the rhythmic, the funky and abrasive.Fear Of The Imagination commences with a paranoid piece of intense, evolving noise and rhythmic splattering. A spellbinding sense of woozy psychedelia entrances the listener with deconstructed drums punctuating the piece. The improvisational feel to 'Leaves In The Wind' sets the precedence for the non-conformity that flows throughout the EP.Track two, 'What If They Are Watching You' sits somewhere between Nine Inch Nails and The Sprawl, with rhythmic intensity greeting the listener immediately at 120 BPM. Masked and ominous vocals creep in and out as metallic sound design washes over the track.Track three 'On A Mad Train' is possibly the groups most experimental piece to date. Droned out guitars and ascending synth lines create an progressive palette that maintains masterful musicality dowsed with menace. The closer 'Lights Out' bursts with slapping synth lines and a distorted kick which acts as the frame for the bed of noise. An ideal closer for an EP that exudes originality on a label that continues to push the boundaries.

Returning to Leyla after inaugurating the label in summer 2015, Manni Dee presents Counterculture. A brutal yet evocative four track EP that conveys emotive states through noise, rhythm, texture and repetition. The opener 'Cameron On A Guillotine' pulls no punches as imagined from the track title. Determined propulsion at 140BPM acts as a stalwart base for sharp metallic stabs to glide over, along with dense atmospheres and percussive detail. Reminiscent of the early days of Birmingham Techno, Manni Dee taps in to his Midlands roots for an unapologetic and overt critique of the current state of affairs.Track two is a more introverted affair, with beds of white noise and atmospheric textures carrying 'Occupational Burnout' to places that both sedate and stimulate, accompanied by intricate and grinding rhythmic repetition. An apt fitting given the track title.Themes of rhythmic brutality return on track three this time in a more spacious form, throughout the astutely titled 'Abundant Fuckry'. Half and double time thrusting layers marry to give birth to a hypnotic bed that continues to expand as the track develops. A playful yet earnest track that displays Dee's skill and proficiency in building original and driving techno. The perfect balance between light and dark, a testament to the concept of Leyla Records, is beautifully presented in the final track. 'We Live In Hope' injects a cinematic sense of optimism through struggle, reminiscent of Dee's work under his Nuances alias.

Across four bristling cuts, he is the first to represent the label's dedication to classic techno with a modernist twist. Human Image further refines Manni's flair for constructing hypnotic techno that surges with detail. The four tracks provide a vivid dip into the dancefloor, placing you firmly in front of the speakers, head first into a manic dance. With previous releases on Black Sun Records and Perc Trax, as well as support from the likes of Surgeon, himself an inspiration for the label, Manni is the perfect artist to launch Leyla into the world. From the blistering roll out of ‘Symbiotic’ to the hypnotic pound of ‘Bring The Brave In’, the swung rhythm of ‘Pascal's Gambit’ to the cavernous inferno of ‘I Was Desire’, Human Image is a reflection of the bodily pleasures of techno. It is what you'd see if you could hold a mirror up to dancing devotees at any rave worldwide. It is, like Leyla's own occult origins, both light and dark. Leyla is a brand new label dedicated to recapturing the authentic feeling of techno from a specific era while retaining a modern touch. It's a platform for the music to grow with inspiration from a wide range of styles - industrial, folk, electro. Leyla brings it all together for a new generation.
