Orbit Ceremony 77

Release:2016 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The French electronic music pioneer behind Black Devil Disco Club released three seminal library albums in the seventies: Suspense (1975), Cosmos 2043 (1977) and The Strange World of Bernard Fèvre (1977).A fourth album called Orbit Ceremony, produced just a few months after, remained in his home studio and never saw the light; sentenced to almost 40 years in the Devil’s vault. By chance, while working on the re-issues, Bernard recently found the original lost tapes of Orbit Ceremony, including the multi-tracks, which he remixed and remastered himself.Spacy moogs, weird clavinet, and cosmic analogue drum machines: it’s all here. The quirky, cosmic library music found on this long-deleted 70′s science-fiction-themed album is full of burbling synths and off-kilter melodies.

Having already blessed the airwaves with their masked Boiler Room performance, and with releases and features seen on YUME, Huntley’s & Palmers, Permanent Vacation and Antho- ny Napel’s Probito, the promising talents of Edinburgh duo Hi & Saberhägen continue on Lo with ‘Acid Finger’.The five track EP showcases exactly what the pair are known for; exploring the balance of the subtle and direct natures of dance music. There is something extremely unique about their productions that breathes new life into an arguably stat- ic climate.‘Acid Finger’ travels from highs to lows at a consistent and co- herent pace, starting with the sparkling, disco tinged ‘Forcé Boîte’. Euphoric heights are executed through light flourish- ing synth lines, drum patters and chord stabs. ‘Woodrum’ maintains the pace but switches the tone with jungle rhythms and a pounding bass.Ominous belter ‘Git’ with its driving kick, looped vocal sample and rolling bass. The track develops into a hopeful finish with the introduction of glittering synth movements.Title track ‘Acid Finger’ delivers beautifully delicate percus- sive and melodic work that progressively shapes up against fleeting shrill synth lines that come to a fitting crescendo.Ending the release is the melancholic atmospheres created in ‘Redacted’, bringing a shift in mood and imitating a trudge through memory lane.Expect to see and hear a lot more from these guys in the future..

Lo Recordings is enormously proud to set free Air’s World Vol. 1 – the first release from London newcomer World Air. Coming on like a savant brainchild to Laurie Anderson & latter-day Bullion, World Air is a rare standalone. A digital digger’s prize find. His sound falls off the shelf amongst those of only other misfit producers: Dominique Dumont’s aquatic bubble-music; Len Leise’s sunset exotica; the loopy brilliance of Matthew Herbert. His debut record is a bright bolt of singular creativity, melding avant-pop, tropical synaesthetics & ambient minimalism into something that feels both oddly familiar & sparklingly new.

After the release of his beautifully put together album ‘Shining The Money Ball’ via Vancouver’s 1080p earlier last year (which will see a limited vinyl release on Lo Recordings later this year), as well as having music released through 100% Silk, Body-San joins the Lo family with ‘Pacific Reasons EP’.Having been a part of the new wave of house music to emerge over the past few years from the West Coast of America and Canada, Body-San delivers music with a rich sense of depth, emotive precision and concise instrumentation throughout.Brandon Knocke (in his own apt description) offers three ‘coastal burners’ through ‘Pacific Reasons’, with the addition of the majestic interlude ‘Liquid Entrance’.‘Topaz Chalice’ sets us off with the sunset, created through comforting yet strangely ominous chords and vocal melody lines. The track slowly evolves with small percussive flurries, beautiful chord and melody progressions and a smooth, sliding bass line. As pleasant and calming as ‘Topaz Chalice’ is, we still feel the full force of Knocke’s thumping kick, making it as viable for the dance as it is for the cans.Following on in the same sun-kissed vein is ‘Central Casting’ where the pace picks up, driven with skittering percussion and a broken arpeggiated sub line. Choral pads and airy synth flourishes finish of the A-side.Title track ‘Pacific Reasons’ brings a deeper side to the release, an offering for the sunrise crew. Where the drums and percussion were of more prominence in the A-side, we see them act as the buried motor that carries these luscious atmospheres as we drift off into the early hours of the morning. While combining brilliantly crafted synthetic sound design (to mimic the sounds of the moving tide), inquisitive, ascending melody work echoing and bouncing over layered heart beats with ticking percussion, Knocke brings the EP to a reflective close in ‘Liquid Entrance’.

Simbad is by no means a newcomer, and has built his rep-utation with over a decades worth of releases. Besides his close affiliation with Brownswood Recordings / Worldwide FM, he’s had production credits on releases by Mala, Daymé Arocena and Robert Owens, and remixed the likes of Black Jazz Consortium, Quantic and Roy Ayers to name but a few.For this release, Simbad once again proves his bold and versatile productions skills. Continuing where his previous solo releases left off, he returns to his roots to further his journey exploring house music in all its richness and diversity under his new moniker SMBD.With references of classic techno, house, and broken beat, the end result is fresh and inspiring. ‘Message 045’ is just that, a comment on today’s world tinted with the sound of an uncertain, technological future and held together with innocent melodies, bubbling synths, rolling basslines and driving percussion. Shimmering pads and punching drums carry both ‘Ping Pong Love’ and ‘Backstreet’, ready for the dance floor. Title track ‘Message 045’ takes a beatless, contemplative approach; dreamy, euphoric instrumenta-tion aided with dialogue that captures the essence of the release.Newcomer World Air offers his charmingly unconventional approach to ‘Ping Pong Love’; a mesmerizing and inventive piece that takes the listener on a trip to a brave new sonic world.Watch this space for World Air’s debut release soon..

"Producer and guitarist Leo Abrahams has always been hard to pin down. On Daylight, he combines fistfuls of unexpected genres through painstaking production into a coherent, surprising album. He finds room for chaos as well as order. Abrahams’ willingness to introduce random and unpredictable elements is perhaps most evident on the title track: warmly immersive until the mood is shattered by bursts of what could almost be machine gun fire.Chain finds him cutting up vocals and beats using a children’s toy. You can watch the video for Chain, featuring Brian Eno, below. Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint plays drums throughout.Across Daylight, the live and the electronic are so enmeshed as to be indiscernible; vocals drift in and out as though behind gauze."
