40 years of the Voyager Golden Record
In 1977 two gilded records were send on a journey to interstellar space on board of the twin-spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Stored on the discs are nearly two hours of audio material (music, sounds, words) and also 120 audio encoded images (photography, graphic, text) in order to describe culture and living space of mankind to a possible finder in a distant future and space. Today Voyager 1 is the furthest artefact and, since 2012, also the first one in interstellar space. John Harten’s art book project reflects in 120 artist contributions and four essays the compelling multi-layered idea and approach of this iconic data disk between album, atlas and archive and deals specifically with the images stored on the Golden Record.
Public Folder is a serial book project by John Harten (co-founder and art director of Magazine, Cologne). The Book (Public Folder #3): Ed. John Harten

When looking for music to be released on Magazine, our guideline has always been energy. The key question remains the same: Does the artist have something important to say? Does it have a sense of urgency? Alex played us these tracks while visiting the Magazine studio in Cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. This is anything but a conceptual release, Alex has not released this kind of music before. A side of Alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. Brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. A Berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, Alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at Berghain. The EP harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. Most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

The first time I heard of Mattes Schwarz, someone called him “Stecken-Mattes”. Stecken was a defining, if almost secret, Cologne dance music venue of the 2000s and early 2010s, a minuscule basement without curfew and seemingly any other restrictions, where the up to twelve hour long DJ-sets felt like a tightly knit circle of friends just playing records to each other: The selectors from the night before and the one after reliably sitting right in front of the just over one meter long stretch of the bar that formed its booth, never missing out on a chance to see their mates play, heads nodding and hands clapping through the smoke-filled air, until someone started to sing along, and eventually everyone got up for a few hours of moves on the 15 square meter dancefloor, on a grey Wednesday or Saturday morning at 7 or just as well 10 am.

We've had our eyes on Jaures since they formed in 2014. Jaures’s drums are neither techno nor electro but something of their very own, making the duo one of the most interesting young production units in Germany right now.
