MdCL Remixes Vol.1 is a compilation of remixes by musical maverick Mark de Clive-Lowe. Bridging worlds of music from DJ led dancefloors to underground jazz clubs, MdCL is one of the most broad-ranging artists you’ll find anywhere. Over his prolific career he’s collaborated with the likes of Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna, Joe Clausell and Restless Soul; remixed the likes of Omar, Shirley Horn and Jody Watley; and regularly takes his mind-bending live show far and wide all over the planet. With this new collection of soulful, dancefloor gems, MdCL presents his DJ-friendly reworks of future classics. The selection kicks off with German trumpet master Nils Wülker featuring none other than Jill Scott vocalling the Nia Andrews and Mocky-penned “Worth the Wait” where Nils’ trumpet dances around Jill Scott, delivering with goosebumps as only she can. Los Angeles based Moulton Music collaborator vocalist Nina Lares gets remixed with a nod to classic late 90s house music, and songbird trio King get their song “Supernatural” remixed with the original’s lush instrumentation underpinned with a bubbling signature MdCL bassline and drums. Side B launches with LA multi-instrumentalist Dexter Story’s “As Is” reimagined as an ethereal late night dancefloor moment inspired by MdCL’s trips to South Africa. Euro-Caribbean-American singer Amana Melomé’s “Lock & Key” has MdCL unleash his synths and piano keys for a full 88-keys workout, and the side closes with broken beat flavors of MdCL remixing longtime New Zealand collaborator Cherie Mathieson with the bassline and drums pressure of “Games We Play” sounding like an undiscovered P-Funk-meets-Bugz in the Attic anthem straight from the clubs of West London.

Mark de Clive-Lowe delivers an outstanding 4 track EP recorded live at Los Angeles’ Blue Whale Jazz club. The EP finds Mark de Clive-Lowe revisiting the grand piano, putting his first instrument front and center with his technological world of keyboards and electronics. It’s his signature amalgamation of acoustic sound sparring with new technology, joined by a world-class crew: Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson / Wayne Shorter) on sax and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens (Robert Glasper/Terrace Martin) on bass and Gene Coye (Thundercat/Flying Lotus) on drums. The instrumental EP opens with an original composition, ‘Evergreen’. Solo piano sets the mood as the composition evolves into a head-nodding, beat-driven journey of improvisational conversation. As the music progresses, we hear Mark de Clive-Lowe programming beats and electronics live and on the spot – manipulating and sampling his own piano, keyboards and Johnson’s sax – creating a musical palimpsest inspired by hip hop’s sampling aesthetic. Only here, the samples are all organic - performed, captured and manipulated completely on the fly.The following tracks pay homage to three of Mark de Clive-Lowe’s heroes – Yusef Lateef firstly on the loping ‘L+H’ – inspired by Yusef’s ‘Love + Humor’ with Owens and Coye underpinning the groove while Mark de Clive-Lowe and Johnson play and become live samples themselves. Sun Ra gets honored the EP’s centerpiece – an 11 minute exploration of his composition ‘The Golden Lady’ – once again, Mark de Clive-Lowe piano is the central focus here, leading the way through a mystically evocative soundscape that reimagines the great master. Johnson switches to flute here bringing his playfulness and musical guile to the mix with the piece culminating in an intoxicating blend of beats, live samples and acoustic band. We close out with an interlude of Ahmad Jamal’s ‘Swahililand’ – most famously sampled for De La Soul’s ‘Stakes is High’ by iconic producer J Dilla. It’s a real treat to hear Mark de Clive-Lowe and band in full-flight live show mode with none of the safety nets of studio production. Live at the Blue Whale hints at what’s more to come from a truly individual musician.
