Best known to the world at large for their disco evergreen “Lady Marmalade,” the powerhouse trio of Sarah Dash, Nona Hendryx and Patti LaBelle are revered in the deeper dance underground for a couple of epic soulful rock workouts that have been known to provoke life-changing moments on the dance floor. With New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint producing and leading an all-star band with the Meters at its core, “What Can You Do For Me” and “Messin’ With My Mind” crackle with energy and rise to thunderous crescendos that rival a gospel revival. Mr. K’s edits acknowledge these songs’ long history in NYC DJ culture, dating from the Gallery and the Loft in the mid-‘70s and running unbroken to today, with masterful extensions that push the inherent energy even further without ever becoming repetitive or obvious. Most Excellent Unlimited is proud to present these sure shots on loud and carefully mastered 7-inch pressings, an essential addition to any gig box or collection.

Japanese singer-songwriter-producer Akemi Kakihara, better known as AK, is a huge star in her native country—where she’s released 15 albums, many topping the charts, along with writing & producing for many other artists as well. Her first album featured a collaboration with close friend Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato—but she’s probably most recognized internationally for Her composition “Say That You Love Me,” originally a jazzy ballad, was remixed by Francois K and Eric Kupper in 2001 and released on New York label King Street Sounds. The remix soon became a staple at Body & Soul in both New York and Japan, ultimately topping the dance charts around the world and emerging as the top house anthem in Japan over the next decade—as well as becoming King Street Sounds’ all time biggest seller. (The song wasn’t the only success story to bloom from this project: visiting Body & Soul for the first time in 2001 to meet Francois K and see and hear the crowd’s reaction to the remix, when she also met DJ and party co-founder Danny Krivit. A romance between them blossomed, they married in 2008, and continue to reside in NYC.)
With 7” vinyl singles currently enjoying a renaissance, Krivit suggested AK revisit the landmark track to do another re-work of “Say That You Love” for Most Excellent Unlimited, something noticeably different from the original. AK’s new version of her signature tune retains her silky vocal refrain that first seduced listeners, but adds a bubbly keyboard melody and a propulsive snare kick that turns it into a dance floor stomper. Krivit then edited down her new production and the Francois K mix for the first time on 7" release; he felt the song’s King Street hit remix arrangement was very strong, so he did his best to maintain it's hit arrangement within the restrictions of a 5:30 min format for the flip side of the single. The result is a must-own 7” that sounds both classic and contemporary at the same time.

Mr. K turns to the funkier side of disco on the latest 12-inch from Most Excellent Unlimited, working his magic on a couple cuts that still retain the same power to fill dance floors they had back in the day. “‘Love The Life You Live’ is one of those rare songs that was big for me when I first started DJing, and still jams today,” notes Krivit, who gives another stripped-down, bass-heavy edit to the irresistible Kool & The Gang classic. One for the b-boys as well as the Loft heads, Mr. K’s edit gradually builds on the hard-charging rhythm with a slinky keyboard solo, punchy horn riffs and breaks, breaks, breaks.
Gary Toms Empire ruled the summer of ’75 with “7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (Blow Your Whistle),” and progressive DJs looking for a follow-up soon discovered another mover in the band’s repertoire. “Drive My Car” is a Lennon/McCartney cover that bears little resemblance to the original, and indeed most fans would be hard-pressed to identify any similarities at all in Danny Krivit’s reworked version. Stripping out the vocals and chorus and leaving just the rumbling low end groove, Mr. K’s edit motors along for a cool 7 minutes, laced throughout with short change-ups to elevate the energy.
Both tunes spread over their own sides of a 12-inch to ensure full-frequency clarity and power!

The seventh 7-inch in Most Excellent Unlimited's series of Mr. K Edits combines a pair of lush midtempo modern soul gems, with both sides textbook candidates for a perfect set-opener. "Live In Me," from Rufus and Chaka Khan's 1979 Masterjam LP, was never released as a single, but that didn't stop it from becoming a fan favorite and warm-up classic for soulful DJs. Composed and produced by the legendary Rod Temperton and Quincy Jones, who were fresh off the completion MJ's Off The Wall when this was recorded, "Live In Me" is judiciously extended here by Danny Krivit without losing any of the graceful magic of the original.
Philly jazz-funkers Pieces Of A Dream get another respectful Krivit extension on the flip side, with their gorgeous "Warm Weather." Written by maestro Dexter Wansel and featuring Barbara Walker on lead vocals, the laid-back pulse of this smooth '81rare groove mainstay has never fallen out of favor with DJs who understand the power of gentle persuasion.

Mr. K returns to the 12-inch format for the latest in his series of edits for Most Excellent Unlimited, making the most of the long-playing wax with two contrasting cuts. First up is Ike Strong's "Boogie Land," an obscure side that was originally released in 1981 and saw plenty of action at the Paradise Garage. Krivit's edit is inspired by Larry Levan's technique in running the tune, focusing as Larry did on the late-song breakdown before dropping into a stripped-down rendition of the undulating main groove, a boogie bomb to be sure!
Don't let the name fool you — the enigmatic Boogie Man Orchestra, stars of the flip side, are all about disco. The instrumental "Lady, Lady, Lady" first appeared in DJ sets in the summer of '75, the prime breakout year for disco, making its way from Chicago all the way to clubs on both coasts despite having no national distribution. Pre-dating the introduction of the 12-inch single, the song never saw release on the larger format, until now. Krivit's edit takes advantage of the extended playing time by easing into the Philly-style orchestral groove and letting it breath for a dramatic, building dancefloor moment.

The unstoppable Most Excellent Unlimited charges ahead with the ninth in the heralded Mr. K 45s Edits series, with this latest edition the most intriguing to date. Deep in Danny Krivit's voluminous collection is a 7-inch acetate rescued from the records left behind by master mixer and DJ Walter Gibbons when he passed away in 1994. The mysterious plate, simply labeled “1, 2, 3,” was custom cut by Gibbons for his personal use in the early '70s when he and a partner operated a service called Melting Pot Sounds that provided one-off copies of otherwise unobtainable imports for NYC disc jocks. Most of the 20-odd known releases on Melting Pot Sounds have been identified, but the true provenance of “1, 2, 3” has remained elusive. The tune is a screaming, instrumental disco delight, with aggressive clavinet riffing broken up periodically by raunchy sax. For this Most Excellent Unlimited issue, Mr. K meticulously transferred his unique Gibbons acetate and further intensified the already propulsive track with a few choice edits of his own.

Not to be outdone, the flip side focuses on a ferocious percussion break that has previously only been available on a very poor quality 12-inch single. “Sweet Summer Suite” by Love Unlimited Orchestra has long been noted for its intro, a concoction of conga, cowbell, cuica and cabasa that drives dancers wild with its relentless, intense groove underpinned by a booming bass slide. Making its 7-inch debut here, the groove has been extended and teased as only a master could do, complimenting the A-side and creating a powerful DJ weapon.

As always, this Most Excellent Unlimited single has been mastered and pressed to the highest standards with loud DJ usage in mind, and will be available in extremely limited quantities.
