From a fascinating yet relatively undiscovered era of experimental music in Peru's capital city Lima, this never before released split single features two of the foremost musical minds of modern day tropical, electronic and ambient roots music. One song each was plucked from the archives of mutual friends Los Palteados (Tomas Tello) & La Sonora Roza (Efraín Rozas / La Mecánica Popular), offering a rare glimpse into the musicians' respective productions and group projects at the onset of the 21st century. The pair of selected recordings each have their own hypnotic sensibility, yet both remain blissfully approachable experimentations in the beloved styles of cumbia & descarga.

Peru's stalwart salseros Sabor y Control return to Names You Can Trust and the 45 format with a brand new pair of signature compositions from band leader and saxophonist Bruno Macher. Collaboratively recorded and produced with NYCT in Lima's Barranco district, these exclusive versions and custom mixes are a throwback to the beautifully raw recordings of 1970s salsa dura. The final result is a testament to the group's tremendous power as a live act and to the musicianship and synergy formed from nearly two decades of playing together, fittingly showcased on the preferred vinyl format.

Back in 2007 Names You Can Trust was launched with an EP from Greenwood Rhythm Coalition. For NYCT's landmark 50th single release, the group returns, drawing on the same long-simmering stew of African, Caribbean and American funk and dancefloor vibes that flavored that first release, but with a sound more deeply infused and farseeing than anything they've done before. The spacey, arcing cut is woven through with guitar that blurs the lines between western twang and soukous popcorn and anchored by cabinet-rattling low end. Spread over two sides of a seven-inch single or available in unedited form digitally, "Jewels" is hypnotic and quite uncategorizable, except to say that sitting still will not be an option when it spins. Adventurous DJs, headphone journeyers, underground dancers, postmodern tropicalistas, and all those whose musical tastes dwell somewhere in the magical twilight of imaginary cities, take note.

Names You Can Trust's long-running Swing-A-Ling party in Brooklyn has become an epic warm weather celebration of all classic styles of Jamaican sound system music on vinyl. The party itself, set in the deepest crevices of BK's Caribbean community, has been known to stretch for 12+ hours each session, serving non-stop musical entertainment and buckets of jerk chicken & curry goat to an adoring crowd of all ages, young and old. The event has also been the occasion of some extremely limited edition record presses that have come to embody both the ethos of the party and the NYCT label. The second in the series of the playfully titled Swing-A-Ling NOW SOUNDS is a new entry in modern reggae production from The Mad Geezers. Like the party's signature sound, the tunes on this double-sided single are timeless, intriguingly left-of-center, and most importantly in deep homage of the vast influences and inspirations that have been carved to vinyl throughout Jamaican recorded history. Elements of rock steady, dub, soul and middle eastern snake charmer sounds all find their way through the hands of the Geezers' skilled musicians and the resulting 45 record is sure to be another sneaky staple in sound systems all over.

Combo Lulo returns to Names You Can Trust for their sophomore single, digging deeper into the diversified sounds of the Caribbean that helped define their debut. While the first single took a Jamaican foundation south into the neighboring continent, fusing the sensibilities of rock steady with those of classic Afro-Latin orchestras, this single goes far east. Inspired by the heady and sublime sounds of foundational ska mixed with East African influences, (think Buster's Islam, Don D's Addis Ababa or Further East), The Sieve & The Sand is a brand new composition within this natural order, albeit with the fortune of different reggae eras and studio styles to draw from. Divided into two parts (but also available seamlessly as it was played in the studio), Combo Lulo's talented players move effortlessly from the galloping shuffle of ska into a deep and dark, Roots Radics-styled instrumental. It's a lovely ode to the original styles of reggae, but also another impressive accomplishment that will surely leave listeners and new fans in anticipation of the shape of things to come for Combo Lulo.

Hailing from a futuristic landscape where gravel, glass and steel rub up against tropical traditions passed down to street-savvy Third Culture kids, Prince Of Queens has made it his mission to synthesize NYC's trans-caribbean culture clash and turn it into something entirely unique: deep techno improbably sprouted from tropic disco; demented cumbia and merengue as imagined by a clever, glitchy robot; a nod to Detroit from a Colombian immigrant's point of view. Merekutek collects five new cuts cooked up by POQ in his Casa Del Indio studio, a dank den of blinking analog filters, resonators and sequencers that also happens to be the creative space of one Felipe Quiroz, widely known as the multi-instrumentalist holding down the low-end for Combo Chimbita, and who is whispered to have a strong resemblance to the Prince Of Queens himself. Mastered at London's legendary Carvery for massive bottom and crisp highs, this new maxi single from Names You Can Trust is positioned to turn out adventurous dancefloors and soundtrack urban headphone walkabouts. Tropical Past and Future is here now, if can you glimpse it in the shadows of Queens.

A tribute to the sound of '70s Salsa Colombiana cooked up by mad genius Eblis Alvarez, who warps the genre out of shape as only someone who deeply loves and understands it can. Referencing the well-worn riffs and song structure of classic salsa dura but at the same time cunningly innovative musically and lyrically, this "Renaissance" version of Alvarez's band Meridian Brothers offers two twisted takes on the traditional idiom. In La Policía Alvarez delivers sardonic eye-witness reportage on Bogotá's dirty cops, while Poema del Salsero Resentido [Tale Of A Bitter Salsero] ponders the fate of Bogotá's salsa scene, positing that (in a nod to Alvarez's hardcore group Los Pirañas) "the hard salseros became punks" ["los salseros duros se volvieron punketos"], an acknowledgement to the immutable power of the "radioactive, annihilating rhythm" ["ritmo radioactivo y aniquilador"] in all its varied forms. The single is housed in a picture sleeve designed by Colombian artist Mateo Rivano that pays homage to the cheesecake photo shoots that adorned so many '70s classics.

Guitarist Rolando Bruno hails from Buenos Aires and got his start playing a raw brand of Garage and Punk with his band Los Peyotes. A few years back he took a step into the not-so-distant world of Afro-Peruvian Psicodelico that's had a recent renaissance throughout South America. What made his early forays into a more tropical branch of fuzz so unique was his accompanying band-or lack thereof. Armed with an electric guitar and self-produced and recorded backing tracks, Rolando Bruno and his Orquesta MIDI jet-setted across Europe and Japan as a mad scientist one-man band, laying down a relentless style of Chicha Classica gone loopy that earned him several tours and a full-length album with the Swiss imprint, Voodoo Rhythm. Originally recorded in 2011 and now remastered and presented by Names You Can Trust on vinyl for the first time, these two tracks are a glimpse into Rolando's prolific electric madness and a lysergic-laced pointer towards things to come from the talented six-stringer.

Introducing Andy Ordoñez, a young drummer and singer native to the cultural nexus of New York City that is The Bronx. The crucible of the NYC melting pot is a fitting base for this rising musician, who was born to Honduran parents of Garifuna decent and raised in the musically rich and diversified Central American neighborhoods of the northernmost borough. At the early age of 13, Ordoñez joined his father Bodoma and his touring Garifuna Cultural Band, themselves well-recognized artists in the Garifuna communities of the Caribbean and the US, communities that all trace their lineage toAfrican survivors of human cargo ships wrecked off the island of St. Vincent around 1675.Ordoñez forged his part in this evolving history while also cutting his musical teeth performing and practicing a legacy comprised of a historic blend of African and Caribbean culture arising through centuries-deep Garifuna heritage. It's another example of an incredibly varied and mixed upbringing that happens all around us in New York City, an essential but often unobserved contribution to the larger communities we inhabit.
On his debut vinyl release for Names You Can Trust, Ordoñez has transformed this base of folkloric drumming, a bedrock of parranda and punta rhythms, along with the distinctive sound of the primero drum (its snare-like punch coming from metal wires wrapped around the drumhead), and fused it with a contemporary blend of Caribbean-style synths and guitars to create a new and totally unheard-of evolution that lies somewhere in the echoes of Cabo Verde, Haiti and Ordoñez's Central American roots.

Names You Can Trust presents the debut release from Netherlands-based group Lola's Dice, an ensemble born and battle-tested by years of punk and hard rock before fusing into its current form, a consolidated tropical-rock rhythm machine. Fueled in equal parts by the group's South American roots in Venezuela and Chile, and the creative freedom of their long-time home in Amsterdam, the band's evolution has resulted in music that is a pure body-moving delight — a fuzzy blend of guitars, synths and musical sabor that is very much rooted in the percussive sounds of Latin America, yet still comfortable in its punk-ethos vandalization of tradition and status quo. Helping to guide the band in this first studio recording is the talented touch of percussion maestro and engineering wiz Alex Figueira (Fumaça Preta, Conjunto Papa Upa) at his Barracão Sounds studio in Amsterdam. The resulting 4-track EP is a perfect match of genre-defying psychedelic madness and Caribbean cool.

Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album in 2013 on Names You Can Trust, La Mecánica Popular has quietly been contemplating the evolution of the group's sound, philosophy, and overall approach to making music. Band leader Efraín Rozas' experimental nature has continually pushed the boundaries of his own definition of not only Latin American music, but its broader relationship with music's global culture and history. The sound of "psychedelic salsa" that LMP helped capture in their debut was destined for further outside-the-box interpretations, and with the formation of a new quintet lineup over the last few years, LMP began to incorporate a more free, improvised and instrumental-focused performance of Rozas' increasingly radical compositions. The band subsequently took this liberated approach directly into the studio, recording Roza Cruz live, in its entirety. It was a cathartic experience, a necessary methodology for the new album's concept that embraced the intimate performance of its players and did away with standard techniques of isolation and overdubs.
The evolution of the band's sound on Roza Cruz brings forth a blend of styles rarely heard together, a touch reminiscent of electric-era Miles Davis or Eddie Palmieri at his most experimental, as the driving force of timbales and congas provide a bed for a wave of lush, analog amplification that mirrors the dueling leads of fuzz guitar and electric piano. But as far out as those instruments take the listener, the raw rhythm — the clave — always keeps it tethered to the earth and the dance, a cerebral yet visceral gift for the mind and feet.

Los Propios Bateros began as a quest to discover a common Colombian rhythm pattern that could connect music from all over the Americas. Spearheading this experiment is prolific drummer and percussionist Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo, Los Pirañas, Ondatropica), who has spent years researching popular rhythmic styles preserved on the bounty of recorded Colombian treasures dating from the 1950s, '60s and '70s â?? treasures that have, outside of a burgeoning new generation of collectors, mostly been poorly preserved and ignored by the general public. Ojeda has documented this quest on a feature length film produced in tandem with Estudio Elgozo, shining light on many of the Colombian drum masters (the propios bateros) that are still alive, including Guillermo Navas, Plinio Córdoba, Germán Chavarriaga, Wilson Viveros and Juancho Cuao among many others. The production of the documentary serendipitously led to the most fabulous of recordings, presented on this single by Names You Can Trust, when the great Guillermo Navas and Germán Chavarriaga, as well as Ojeda himself and an all-star cast of younger generation musicians, assembled for a jam session in Bogotá. These two studio recordings are master classes in Colombian descarga and pompo, loose and improvised jams with a seductive, seasoned groove and flavor that is unmistakably Colombian, and inherently timeless.

Bullerengue is a tradition that originated in the caribbean region of Colombia, and it can be heard from los Montes de Maria all the way to el Uraba Antioqueсo. It is through the drums, chants, and dances that knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation. El Bullerengue is a life style, a way to celebrate festivities, life, and the African legacy in Colombia,

Bulla en el Barrio was born in New York City as a way to continue a learning process that started back in Baranquilla, Colombia. It culminated with the arrival of lead singer Carolina Oliveros to the city in 2013, and her connection with a tight-knit group of local Colombian musicians. They began to fill parks and other public places with the sounds of their home country to a small audience. Little by little, some of this audience became participants, and in turn, the participants became students of the sound who eventually joined the group. The ensemble has maintained a deep focus on the art and discipline of los bailes cantados, a series of spontaneous music and dance from Colombia's caribbean region that share a complex history and rhythm depending on their exact zone and tradition of practice. The tradition of el bullrengue is at the core of Bulla's process, and in the case of these recordings, you will hear two examples (fandango & chalupa) of the three different rhythmic structures that make up el bullerengue.

From the beginning days of Bulla, the group has since transformed into a community of over 12 active members who all share a strong sense of connection to their roots - and consciousness of their ancestors. It is through the participation and love of this active membership that Bulla has become not only a creative space where musical ideas are shared, but also a space of integration and immigrant resistance.

Based out of San Francisco, Extra Classic is a unique live band formed with a keen appreciation of vintage reggae & vintage sounds. The aesthetic, and certainly the skilled method of their production, is an ode to the art of that classic style as referenced to the term coined by the Cool Ruler himself. Recording in their own studio, Nopal Recording, the band employs a taster's choice of analog equipment and is devotedly tracked, spliced and mixed in-house direct to tape. However, as the group's name itself implies, there is a dose of something extra and new in this swirling mixture of space echo, heavy phase, and emotive, psychedelic California-soul.

Built upon the rock of an early-era dancehall swing, their first single in conjunction with Brooklyn-based imprint Names You Can Trust entitled In This Life, is a perfect slice of lover's rock gone sideways, a decidedly left-coast piece of roots and bliss driven by Adrianne deLanda's lovely lead vocals and the steady, dusty echoes of the locked in players. Presented in the traditional format with a version as per NYCT fashion, the dub mix incorporates a soothing dose of synare beams and underwater instrumental dreams.
