Unmoored By The Wind
LP | 2014 | US | Original (New Images)
18,99 €*
Release:2014 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Received a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork.Folk guitarist and songwriter originally from New York State Kayla Cohen, a.k.a. Itasca, has released several small-press CDrs and cassettes over the past five years. A resident of Los Angeles since 2012, She records at home, taking inspiration from the fringes of the city’s open space and natural land. On Unmoored by the Wind, Cohen achieves new levels of clarity and expansiveness. Where 2012’s Grace Riders on the Road reveled in homemade intimacy, Unmoored by the Wind opens to the world, reaching a timeless, near-baroque yearning; each of these eleven tracks burns with a unique vision. At once soft-spoken and virtuosic, Cohen’s mesmerizing fingerpicking lays gauzy groundwork for vocal work David Keenan described as “courtly .. dazzling.” This spacious set of songs flows seamlessly between wistful interludes à la Bob Desper and fully-fledged verses of powerful, often beguiling imagery.

Collaborating with drummer Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Man Forever), guitarist Alan Licht (Lee Ranaldo & The Dust, The Blue Humans, Love Child, Run On, etc.) is back for another release on New Images Ltd. We Thought We Could Do Anything is a far less literal take on spontaneous dialogue than his "talk-rock" project TITLE TK, whose album / sleeve / book Rock$ was published in 2013. Impressive pedigrees aside, Licht and Chase are a real-deal pairing; each has a longstanding involvement in underground rock, minimalism, experimental music, and free improvisation. We Thought We Could Do Anything is their first record together and it lives by its intrepid name. Conceived as a series of structured improvisations, it joins fiery drumming with titanic guitar abstraction for a collection of sharply focused sonic passages. It's music with the harshest colors up front and in detail. Licht's guitar is the torrential speech at hand, and its dynamic limits are bound only by the album's run-time.

Genre:Pop
New Jersey / New York based project LIMITED plays a brand of dream pop that's heavy on the pop, albeit a highly mechanical version of it. It's a sound built on contrast; a juxtaposition of the mechanized, danceable grooves of New Romantic synth funk-pop and walls of noise-gaze guitar layers. While these sources may be somewhat at odds with one another (music for dancing vs. music named after gazing at one's shoes), Limited's debut single splits the difference between them, and arrives at a pop hybrid that calls to mind early Madonna singles had they been a collaboration with Psychocandy-era Jesus and Mary Chain. This "double A-sided" single, released on fellow NJ-native Matthew Mondanile's (Ducktails, Real Estate) New Images imprint, features "You Must Be Dreaming" b/w "New Day Rising": two pop anthems which shroud sequenced rhythms and bubblegum choruses in a thick sheet of warm static that runs through the whole thing. The "Hi-NRG" arrangement style injects some welcome liveliness into an otherwise often sleepy genre. Meanwhile, the filter of static abstraction forces the listener to dig just a little deeper for the hooks, making them all the more rewarding.
