They have been known to deep soul, funk and disco collectors for decades for their sought after 7” “Watching Out/Dazed,” long thought to be the band’s only recordings.Egon tracked down Split Decision Band’s vocalist and songwriter Gordon Starr Flipping in the hopes of more and got it – with Split Decision Band, Now-Again presents a never-before-released album of devastatingly good disco and boogie from the unlikelycity of Des Moines, Iowa. Flipping’s collaborations with Prince’s stable made him a Midwestern legend, but his band’s music is more than an urban tall tale – this album finally proves to the world their merits.

How Zambia’s Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution. 1972-1977By the mid-1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though thecountry’s first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itselfunder his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. Kaunda protected Zambiafrom war, but his country descended into isolation and poverty. This is the environment in which the ’70s rock revolution that has come to be known as Zamrock flourished. Fuzz guitarswere commonplace, as were driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown’s funk as Jimi Hendrix’s rock predominated.Musical themes, mainly sung in the country’s constitutional language, English, were often bleak. In present day Zambia, Zamrock markers were few. Only a small number of the original Zamrock godfathers that remainedin the country survived through the late ’90s. AIDS decimated this country, and uncontrollable inflation forced the Zambianrockers that could afford to flee into something resembling exile. This was not a likely scene to survive - but it did. WelcomeTo Zamrock!, presented in two volumes, is an overview of its most beloved ensembles, and a trace of its arc from itsascension, to its fall, to its resurgence.

Attention: the sticker says "incl. booklet", but there's no booklet inside!Now-Again Records is proud to present "Back From The Brink", the only legitimately licensed collection of the godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock, Kourosh Yaghmaei. Known within the Iranian diaspora simply by his first name, Kourosh’s Pre-Revolution recordings were thought lost after Islamic fundamentalists took control of Iran. They weren’t: Kourosh had protected them – along with key ephemera from the 70’s. Their collection here - spread over a 3-LP - bolstered by Kourosh’s first person recollections of Iran’s 70s rock scene and its death after the Revolution, tells the story of an immensely talented artist’s desire to persevere in the face of terrible adversity.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2017!14 tracks by Jimi Macon, Black Maffia, Blacklites and more, many reissued for the first time. Includes a 16-page booklet with extensive notes on an overlooked and important portion of Rock n’ Roll’s history & a download card to WAV files of the full album. Nearly everyone in the world can rattle off the great African-American musical forms. Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, House or Gospel. One influential genre is always left off of thelist: a folk music known as rock n’ roll. Rock n’ Roll was a term originally coined to market the white-friendly version of a genre that already existed; prior to 1965, the line betweenrock n’ roll and R&B was thin: Ike Turner recorded and released “Rocket ‘88’ ” in 1951 and, while its Chess Records release reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart, it isregarded by many as the first Rock n’ Roll record. The Great Divide between R&B and Rock n’ Roll came after the Beatles and the British Invasion decimated the Top 40 chart in 1964. So somewhere in the mid to late-1960s, Rock n’ Roll became perceived as something forthe Caucasian kids. When Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Lee made the scene, they were said to be black musicians entering into a white world. This anthology presents earnest questions as to why we know so little about these bands and the movement of which they were a part.

Just as the hippie era came to an end in America, a second 60s was beginning. In what is now Zimbabwe, young people created a rock and roll counterculture that drew inspiration from hippie ideals and the soundsof Hendrix and Deep Purple. The kids in the scene called their music “heavy,” because they could feel itsimpact, and it resonated from Zambia to Nigeria. At its peak in the mid-70s, the heavy rock scene united tens of thousands of young progressives of all racialand social backgrounds. The country was called Rhodesia then, one of the last bastions of white rule in Africa, and heavy rockers defied segregation laws and secret police to make a stand for democratic change.Wells Fargo was at the forefront of the scene, and the title track of this album, Watch Out, was the anthem ofthe counterculture. This is the first time their music has been issued outside of Zimbabwe.Matthew Shechmeister tells the story of Wells Fargo drawing on interviews with the band's remainingmembers and numerous trips to Zimbabwe to investigate the genesis of the heavy rock scene under IanSmith's oppressive government, and its dissipation after Zimbabwe's liberation. Never-before-publishedphotographs and rare ephemera color the vibrant era of which this band was part.Bundled with a download card for WAV files and 72 page digital PDF that details the history of Zimbabwe’sheavy rock scene and the trajectory of Wells Fargo.

Tempo dos Mestres (Time of the Masters) is the second album from the tireless, young Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento. It finds its roots in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, passed down through generations of Native Brazilians, and is imbibed bythe Afro-Brazilian culture that arose after Portuguese colonization. This blend is not new in Brazil, and is represented musically bygreat Brazilian musicians both known and celebrated - the guitarist Baden Powell and catalyst Hermeto Pascoal, both directinfluences on Do Nascimento - and less exposed, like the experimentalist Carioca, one of Do Nascimento’s mentors, and theBrazilian psychedelic pioneer Lula Cortes, whose album Paebiru rewrote Brazilian rock’s history in 1975.It is the third Brazilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz and Do Nascimento’s debut Dança dosTempos. Do Nascimento's is joined on Tempo dos Mestres by his long time percussionist, Ricardo "Tiki" Pasillas on trap drumsand percussion, and Sam Gendel on saxophone and flute. Vocals are performed by Thalma de Freitas and Carla Hasset. These tracks were recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, straight to 2” analog-tape, and only sparingly mastered to focuson the subtleties of the performances. Do Nascimento’s fans include legendary percussionist Airto Moreira, who recorded Dançados Tempos and can be found playing live with Do Nascimento. "He’s Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is notcommon.” Moreira states. “Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrumentand who like that energy!”Do Nascimento takes his music, and his place in Brazil’s lineage, seriously, and he often travels the vast country, spending time inthe rainforest, living life as it was lived in the distant past, while studying with still living masters as he searches for new directionsof the path trod by the geniuses whose influence abounds in contemporary music, but whose names are still unfamiliar.“Being a musician - feeling, studying, experiencing, living music -this comes first, right?” Do Nascimento questions. “ Second,we hope that the depths of knowledge in the music from the masters before us can be shared more, each time, to the youngergenerations coming.” In Tempo dos Mestres Do Nascimento answers himself with a beautiful entry into the evolving language oftimeless Brazilian music.

The Western world was in the throes of peace, love and flower power as Nigeria descended into Civil War in 1967. The rock scene that developed during the following three years of bloodshed and destruction would come to heal the country, propagate the world-wide ideal of the Modern Nigerian, and propel Fela to stardom after conflict ended in 1970. “Wake Up You!” tells the story of this time, pays homage to these now-forgotten musicians and their struggle, and brings to light the funk and psychedelic fury they created as they wrested free of the ravages of the late 1960s and created thrilling, original Nigerian rock music throughout the 1970s.

Australian guitarist/visionary Rob Thomsett’s collected works – two LPs – are combined into one package as the fourth release in the Now Again Reserve series.Originally privately pressed in tiny numbers in Canberra in the mid-‘70s, Yaraandoo & Hara have become sought after examples of the best in progressive jazz/rock. “Taking in impressionistic hazy instrumental jazz … muscular fusion moves, solo Mellotron pieces as heavenly as anything Beethoven or Handel ever concocted, extremely loose-limbed ethno-fusion soundscapes of the Don Cherry/Pharoah Sanders variety, film soundtracks … and electronic experimentalism … hair-raising, soul-searching beauty – with an overall dreamy, hazy quality that perhaps could only be written by an Australian fully conversant with the “Dreamtime” cultural feel for the myths and legends of the Outback.” – Julian Cope’s Head Heritage

"Out There" may have been one hell of an opening volley, but having spent some years in the wild running among mavericks like Astatke and Oriental Jazz pioneer Lloyd Miller, the Heliocentrics have realized that their strongest statements are made somewhere between the persistent fuzz of Owusu’s distorted guitar, Catto’s impossible syncopation and Ferguson’s looping bass lines. 13 Degrees of Reality is one of the most distinctive musical statements you’ll hear all year.

The full 33-minute, unreleased, psychedelic funk jam session by Memphis rhythm kingpins theBar-Kays, mixed directly from the original tapes. Contains bonus rhythm section instrumental andbooklet detailing the history of this never-before-heard version of one of Isaac Hayes’ mostfamous songs by Hayes historian Bill Dahl.Hayes was already a cutting-edge funk master at Stax Records when he accepted theunprecedented assignment of creating a soundtrack for the 1971 action flick Shaft. At a timewhen R&B songs routinely timed out at three minutes and under, Hayes’ albums for Stax’sEnterprise imprint had been breaking new ground since 1969. His masterpiece Hot Buttered Soulconsisted of only four tracks, two songs on The Isaac Hayes Movement clocked in at a hair under12 minutes, and one selection on his …To Be Continued stretched to 15:33.But his epic “Do Your Thing,” one of the cornerstones of the two-LP Shaft soundtrack, outdid themall. Occupying nearly the entire last side of the set, it concluded after 19-and-a-half groovingminutes with the overdubbed sound of a needle scratching violently across a piece of vinyl. Noone knew that jarring ending masked the existence of another 13 minutes of “Do Your Thing.”Consigned to the vaults, those improvisatory extensions—somewhere in between free-jazz andpsychedelic rock—were seemingly destined never to be heard. Until now.Limited edition for Black Friday RSD 2016!

We’re introducing: Johnny! Ghanaian Afro-Rock from German producer/composer J.J. Whitefield and an international cast of top shelf musicians. Whitefield, who in the early ‘90s revived the gritty, analogue Funk sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s with his Poets Of Rhythm, has been working with Now-Again Records for almost a decade, releasing a flock of acclaimed projects with Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Whitefield Brothers, Rodinia and the “Original Raw Soul” anthology. He first started exploring African rhythms with the Whitefield Brothers in the late ‘90s, continuing in the ‘00s with Karl Hector & The Malcouns. He’s been instrumental in launching Ghanaian Afro Beat/Funk legend Ebo Taylor´s international career, decades after the maestro recorded the landmark albums that have inspired thousands. Whitefield recorded two new studio albums with Taylor and toured in his band between 2009 and 2013, where he met Taylor’s son Henry and percussionist/Singer Eric Owusu. The trio now front the Johnny! band and find inspiration not only in Ghana’s hypnotic grooves, but also the full frontal fuzz guitar assault heard on the legion of 70s Zambian Zamrock albums recently reissued by Now-Again. Indeed, Whitefield credits his tours with Zamrock godfathers Rikki Ililonga and WITCH’s Jagari Chanda as instrumental in creating the Johnny’s sonic backdrop. The band is rounded out by Turkish drummer Bernd Oezsevim (Woima Collective, Rodinia) and Indonesian bassist/multi instrumentalist Tomi Simatupang (Whitefield Brothers). This is Dance Rock at the core with the possibilities to stretch out and go into psychedelic realms. The results, spread out over three 7”singles and pressed in a run of 1000 units each, speak for themselves. Every record comes with a download card for WAV files of all six tracks (vocals and instrumentals from each release) and point at a new direction for the music inspired by the Great Continent.

It’s been some years since the first Karl Hector release, and it’s known now that Mr. Hector is indeed the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, ne Jan Weissenfeldt. Whitefield is the visionary behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, the ensembles whose rough analog sound and return to the funk archetypes of the late 60s to early 70s paved the way for labels like Daptone, Truth & Soul, Timmion. "Unstraight Ahead" finds the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing. On this album, the West African sounds of Ghana and Mali meet the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke’s Ethiopian jazz and are tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns’ 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow’s Gift.

Both World’s Experience Orchestras albums were recorded in and around Boston, Massachusetts in the mid to late 1970s and committed to vinyl in miniscule press runs by a visionary, bassist/composer/arranger John Jamyll Jones. Jones is a magical type, who communicates with his instrument, his ensembles, and jazz’s ancient lineage in a manner so profound that his late-‘70s album are out of time with jazz’s trajectory, but timeless when presented today. By the late ’90s the music of World’s Experience Orchestra was circulating throughout the collections of esoteric jazz fans, the likes of Gerald “Jazzman” Short and Gilles Peterson, who played “The Prayer” for those, the Coltrane-enthralled searching for something new, something different. Something spiritual and honest. Peterson first offered to reissue “The Prayer,” as part of an anthology he was putting together with Los Angeles reissue label Ubiquity Records and that, to date, is the only official issue of any of Jones’ music. This set is the definitive catalog of Jones’ ensembles’ released work. “I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t know when,” says Jones of the road to seeing his music re-issued. “It’s 35 years or more now, and I’ve been waiting for this, and I’m quite sure I’m not the only one.” This limited edition of 1000 comes packaged in a hand-made, extra-thick “tip on” gatefold jacket, with obi strip and resealable polybag. It also includes a Download Card of the albums, packaged as a “mini-LP” inside a cardboard O-card encasing a perfect-bound booklet. Furthermore it includes a download card for WAV files of the albums and a booklet with extensive liner notes detailing the history of the album, and a hand done silkscreened album insert by Hit & Run.

Essential garage Zamrock/soul/funk: the first official reissue of the celebrated band’s one and only album. The musical style that became known as Zamrock came to embody the economic despair that followed the 1973-1974 oil crisis, which flung Zambia into recession and exacerbated a wide range of social tensions. Much of Zamrock also captured the controversy of wider politics in Africa and the world. Perhaps the finest example of this is Black Power by The Peace. - The Guardian. The Boyfriends, from Kitwe’s Chamboli Mine Township, supplied the founding members for Zamrock’s most famous band, Witch, and kick started one of Zamrock’s best bands, Peace. Their sole Zamrock entry, Black Power, recorded at Malachite Film Studio circa 1973/4 and issued circa 1975, sounds like nothing else in the Zamrock canon: a lost message drifiting from the flower power era, imbued with a fiery Zambian voice.

Folkloric Brasilian/Afro-Brasilian music taken into the future.Featuring Airto Moreira. Dança dos Tempos is the debut album from thrilling, young Brazilian guitarist Fabiano doNascimento, and it features legendary percussionist Airto Moreira in his first album project inover ten years. Dança dos Tempos follows folkloric Brazilian music as experienced through themind and able fingers of an expansive musician, not yet thirty years old, and combines theheady ‘60s and ‘70s experimentalism of Hermeto Pascoal and Baden Powell with the childlikeelegance of music played and passed down by native Brazilians for generations. It is thesecond Brazilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz.Moreira, the bandleader, songwriter and producer who recorded a bevy of titles under his ownname, with his wife Flora Purim, and whose resume contains the names of - seriously - everymusician worth mentioning from America or Brazil from the past 50 years - plays percussion onthe album and is joined by do Nascimento's long time drummer, Ricardo "Tiki" Pasillas on trapdrums. Do Nascimento and Kana Shimanuki handle vocals on what is otherwise an airy instrumentalalbum that allows the guitarist's virtuosity to shine through originals, folkloric Braziliansongs, and select covers by the likes of Pascoal and Powell, both formative influences on theguitarist. These duets show the camaraderie that two master Brazilian musicians - of two differentgenerations, but of the same spirit - share with comrades of ages past as they imagine musicfor the years to come. These tracks were recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, straightto 2” analog-tape, and only sparingly mastered to focus on the subtleties of the performances.

In 2000, deep funk anthologies were of the shoddy, bootleg variety: you know, the kind that featured new photos of models playing up the funk buffoonery of overgrown afros, bell bottoms and platform shoes. Then came the first fully licensed album of its kind - The Funky 16 Corners anthology, released on Stones Throw Records in 2001. For the funk heroes and heroines that had recorded in the wake of James Brown in the 60s and 70s, everything changed. It's not too much of a reach to say that companies like Numero Group, Jazzman Records, Light In The Attic – and their marvellous reissues from the past decade – might not have been had it not been for The Funky 16 Corners' success. In 2003, two years after The Funky 16 Corners' release, Egon revisited the deal that sent him on the chase for licensing agreements in the first place: a box set of 7" singles that Traffic Entertainment Group's president Joe Mansfield had sent him on. The result was Soul 7 – a box set of seven 7 inch singles from the 60s and 70s. Some had seen their songs featured on The Funky 16 Corners; some had been up for consideration, but hadn't made the final cut. Soul 7 was, as Egon wrote in his original liner notes, "a companion piece to The Funky 16 Corners... a chance to stretch out, and dig a lil' deeper into the backgrounds and musical legacies of some of the pieces that define the genre that Keb Darge dubbed deep funk." Almost ten years after Soul 7's original release, the results of that investigation still sound fiery and fresh. - 14 rare and unreleased funk and soul tracks presented as seven 7" singles in a rigid, hard back box with magnet closure clasp. - Full color 32 page book featuring vintage photography, liner notes and ephemera. - Full restoration of center label artwork from original pressings.

This compilation introduces a new direction for Now-Again Records and its owner, Stones Throw Records GM, A&R and producer Egon. With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for Deep Funk (The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat), he tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains. Forge Your Own Chains showcases music from all corners of the world: Colombia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand and Iran. The focus – in keeping with Now-Again’s tradition – is on melody, driving rhythms and accessibility. Not one song is included on thiscompilation because it is from a “rare” album. Certainly, many of these songs do spring from albums that exchange hands for many thousands of dollars and many of these songs have never seen reissue. But these songs are all beautiful in their own right and work to form a coherent album.

“It’s 35 years or more now, and I’ve been waiting for this, and I’m quite sure I’m not the only one.”

Now-Again Records has enjoyed a long and creative partnership with Munich-based multi-instrumentalist JJWhitefield, creative force behind the Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers and Karl Hector & The Malcouns. Rodinia, his latest project, is quite different than anything that’s come from his oeuvre to date, but follows inthe line of the Poets of Rhythm’s great Discern/Define, as it reaches back to Krautrock’s experimental heyday but pushes its boundaries with a post-hip-hop approach. That’s to say that everything you read in the header above is true, but the ambient sound Whitefield and hisRodinia collaborator - saxophonist and keyboardist Johannes Schleiermacher – reached for found itselfmorphing over the course of a year. What was originally recorded in a two-day studio lock-in, which foundWhitefield and Schleiermacher hooking up “all our vintage synths (Korg MS-20, Moog Prodigy, Roland Juno60, Jen SX 1000, Korg Polysix), triggering everything with a vintage Korg rhythm box, absorbing some mindaltering substances and jamming out,” was later turned into two, side-long suites, with over-dubbed reeds, drums and guitar, and self-made Moroccan field recordings introducing the project on its Drumside. The result is as winsome and exploratory as those from their forebears, but respectfully distanced from thepast’s trappings. With original artwork by Jason Jagel (DOOM’s Mm Food, Operation DOOMsday).

Seven years in the making, Never Satisfied is our collection of legendary soul and funk singles by Atlanta Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Richard Marks. This 21 track anthology follows Marks’ stylistic development, from his earliest work for the legendary Tuska label, from 1968 until approximately 1972, through his more mature releases on the Shout label and smaller regional labels like Note, Free Spirit and RSC. It also includes two tracks never released in any form, found on reels Marks had maintained in his Atlanta home.Marks’ story is that on an unsung soul and funk hero; a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose number was in Al Green’s, Barry White’s and Eddie Kendricks’ rolodexes, but whose talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts since his 45s were released and disappeared into Atlanta’s urban expanse. This is the story of a father and husband who managed to keep his family together as he gigged the third shift six nights a week. The story of a man who wished for more and whose talent is overdue for reassessment.Marks and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod, that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions. Marks’ impeccable run of 7” singles, released largely on tiny, local labels, are the stuff of legend, and are hen’s-teeth-rare.Marks died of cancer in May of 2006, never having issued an album, either in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when many of his peers were able to find a way to issue an LP, or in anthology form in his later years. He never granted an interview. Given the caliber of his recordings and the near complete lack of information available about him before the issue of this anthology, Marks stands out as the most mysterious talent to originate from Atlanta, a city that birthed no shortage of genius, from acclaimed worldwide (the Mighty Hannibal), obscure yet celebrated (Lee Moses) and local, but well documented (Tommy Stewart). Never Satisfied aims to illuminate the life and career of this all-too-talented musician.56 page saddle-stitched 9″ x 6″ book with CD and 2LP with 20 page booklet. Book/Booklet contains extensive essays on Marks’ career and is full of never-before-seen photos and ephemera from this crucial Southern soul and funk epoch. Download card included with LP version.

Amanaz - Africa

Africa

Release:1975 / US – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia’s Zamrock ethos. While other albums - Rikki Ililonga’s Zambia, WITCH’s Lazy Bones!! - are competitors, it’s hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks - hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, “becauseof how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen… all the atrocities slave drivers committed. “ Thus, their “Kale,” a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent’s arc from slavery to Zambia’s independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa’s vibe ranges from anxious (“Amanaz”) to escapist (“Easy Street”) to straight-up pissed-off. On the “History of Man,” his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There’s a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu’s more restrained “Khala My Friend,” which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there’s the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic “Sunday Morning,” which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release - and the underground funk of “Making The Scene.” The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-‘60s rock – punctuated, of course by Kanyepa’s wah-wah and Mpofu’s fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. “Green Apple” is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa’s sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu’s and Kanyepa’s lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section’s sense of space and time, which allows Africa’s funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We’ve presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it’s up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue.

Masterpieces in Deep/Modal/Spiritual Jazz from a teenaged wunderkind, recorded and released from 1968-1970. P.E. Hewitt was 16 years old when he recorded and released – in a pressing of 50 copies – his debut album "Jawbones". By the time he sold through the 100 copies of this third, "Winter Winds", he was approaching the ripe-age of 20. The three albums he and his young compatriots wrote, recorded, pressed and – if you can call it that – distributed, are three of the rarest damn-good 70's Jazz albums you could ever hope to come across. That’s a subtle, but important distinction. There are many rare Jazz albums in every imaginable subgenre, but Hewitt’s three albums were so damn good that neither micro presses nor forty years of silence could suppress their reemergence.

This September Now-Again Records, in association with Five Day Weekend, will be bringing you "Switched On", the newest project from Mr. Chop. The producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist behind several Now-Again and Jazzman Records releases is the proprietor of Cheshire, UK based Ape Recording Studios, one of the finest analog studios in the world. Not to mention, it is a repository for vintage synthesizers, guitars, drums and gear sourced from the world over. Which brings us to "Switched On", his homage to the great Moog-lead albums that proliferated in the late 60s and early 70s. Your first taste from Switched On is Chop’s take on the Can classic “Vitamin C”. The gang at Now-Again and Five Day Weekend could have just dropped the cut as a 12” but given the wealth ofcreativity from both camps something special seemed in order. Some would have said orange vinyl would be unique enough but to make the experience a bit more interesting this destined to be collectible vinyl will be coming as an orange vinyl 9 inch pressing.

Now-Again Records is proud to present "Back From The Brink", the only legitimately licensed collection of the godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock, Kourosh Yaghmaei. Known within the Iranian diaspora simply by his first name, Kourosh’s Pre-Revolution recordings were thought lost after Islamic fundamentalists took control of Iran. They weren’t: Kourosh had protected them – along with key ephemera from the 70’s. Their collection here - spread over two CDs - bolstered by Kourosh’s first person recollections of Iran’s 70s rock scene and its death after the Revolution, tells the story of an immensely talented artist’s desire to persevere in the face of terrible adversity.

Warehouse find!!!Grab your final chance!60's and 70's Soul, Funk, Disco, Party-Rap and Boogie from Arkansas's Legendary Independent Label - the final installment presented as an all inclusive 4xLP Anthology.Now-Again Records, in association with label-owner Lee Anthony, is proud to present the release of True Soul: Deep Sounds from the Left of Stax, a collection of rare and unreleased funk and soul music from the fabled Arkansas indie. Over twelve years in the making, this anthology – presented over the course of two volumes of CD/DVDs and one four-LP box set – seeks to establish True Soul’s rightful place within America’s funk and soul pantheon. As much as this CD/DVD set is about the adventurous, always-funky and oh-so-rare recordings that True Soul made possible, it is also about Anthony, the man. A true, American “up-from-the-bootstraps” story, Anthony’s is one in which his frontiersman’s entrepreneurial spirit and vision remains undeterred as he sets up black-owned businesses in a post-Jim Crow South and succeeds in capturing recordings from the high water mark of America’s funk and soul movement.Anthony’s story intertwines with the renowned Sam Philips – an early mentor and patron – and Memphis’s Al Bell and Willie Mitchell – with whom Anthony collaborated as he tried to cultivate Little Rock’s funk and soul in the shadow of Stax and Hi Records. This anthology will make influence amongst the history of southern funk and soul is transparent, as his story of how he helped turn a stranded road band into the Gap Band. This comprehensive True Soul Records anthology – including a 10-page, booklet chock full of photos, ephemera and extensive liner notes - not only carries the rare distributed funk and soul 45s that led the likes of renowned collectors DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Lee Anthony’s door in search of Anthony’s fabled “treasure chest,*” but also includes previously unreleased boogie, disco and party rap recorded in True Soul’s early-80’s twilight. You can find this all contained in a one of a kind 4xLP boxset, with each sleeve donning the True Soul logo that Anthony held so dear.
