All too often a band emerges from the underground, records a promising demo or EP, and soon after, under some perceived notion of urgency, releases a lackluster debut album rife with impotent filler tracks, and is thus discarded to the overpopulated scrap pile of mediocre metal bands. Fewer and farther between are the bands that rightfully and patiently take their time to properly develop their musicianship and songwriting abilities, experiment with their sound and recording technique, and then unleash a debut album, sometimes several years later, that is more than worthy of its time in waiting. Having existed for over ten years, but content to this point to have released just a handful of demos, splits, and a single EP, Italy’s Mefitic fits the latter categorization. With its debut album, “Woes of Mortal Devotion,” hereby released under the banner of Nuclear War Now!, Mefitic proves that patience is rewarded by the quality of its product.

With its outstanding and truly unique debut full-length album, “Transient,” Chaos Echoes made a very strong case earlier this year for album of 2015. However, with its influences drawing as heavily from the experimental realm as from the domain of metal, what is less certain is in which category the award would be given. Unlike your typical death metal band, the lasting imprint that Chaos Echoes leaves on the listener is owed not simply to a linear series of formulaic, prearranged riffs, but instead to a tapestry of interwoven textures, both oppressively heavy and hauntingly subtle, that are primarily born from improvised rehearsal sessions. "Parisian Sessions / Rehearsal I" is a document of the very first sessions that Chaos Echoes every played in January 2012.

The set consisted of instrumental versions of four songs from the “Tone of Things to Come” EP, all rearranged for the live set, in addition to a brand-new and fully-improvised track entitled “Interzone III: La Boule Noire.”

The full first album and EP from 1988 from one of the most significant and obscure early black metal bands from South America - REENCARNATION. As the label first did in 2006, Nuclear War Now! is once again proud to reissue “888 Metal,” on both double-LP and CD formats. In its entirety, this release exhumes a collective sound and vision once partially obscured by its isolated geographic location and socio-political unrest, but one which must endure as a lasting artefact of a genre that was immeasurably shaped by its early South American influence.

2015 marks approximately ten years since Rites of Thy Degringolade was originally put to rest. Thankfully, it also marks the band’s recent resurrection, as it has made preliminary plans for some upcoming festival dates, a European tour, and perhaps even new material. To celebrate this fortunate turn of events, Nuclear War Now! is honored to offer a repress of “An Ode to Sin,” as it had originally released in 2005 (albeit this time in a standard, single-pocket jacket with insert). With this release, NWN! aims to widen the footprint of one of the most overlooked, but also most-deserving, black metal bands of its kind.

"Fallen Angel of Doom...." is a monument of black metal! This album inspired an entire genre upon its release. The owner of Wild Rags! Records, the notorious Richard C., phoned Black Winds when the album was released and told him excitedly that the album was selling so well that he was having trouble keeping it in stock! For the underground scene it made an impact that still resonates to this day. Bands from all around the world were inspired by BLASPHEMY as soon as "Fallen Angel of Doom...." was unleashed. Everywhere from Brazil to Singapore, Finland to Germany, bands were taking cue from BLASPHEMY and playing the most merciless forms of black metal, and waves of other bands over the years came into being thanks to BLASPHEMY, including my former bands CONQUEROR and DOMINI INFERI! Black metal hit the highest levels of extremity when BLASPHEMY released "Fallen Angel of Doom...." still unsurpassed to this day! It took everything known about the genre and made it even more savage and malevolent, both musically and visually. The way it should be!

Following the vinyl release of Ill Omen's second album, "Enthroning the Bonds of Abhorrence," earlier this year, NWN! is proud to present another new offering by Ill Omen, one of the most consistently intriguing bands active today. The enigmatic multi-instrumentalist and sole member of Ill Omen known only as IV recorded "Remnant Spheres of Spiritual Equilibrium" in September and October 2012 and released it on his own label, Abyssic Commune, in early 2013. Originally a tape-only release featuring artwork by Antediluvian's visionary, Haasiophis, the 50 copies that were made quickly dissipated; however, the quality of the work commanded wider distribution. The 37-minute album maintains a cohesive focus both musically and thematically. It is, according to IV, a "concept recording broken into four movements, but intended for consideration as a single opus." The lyrical nucleus of the album is, in IV's words, "an exploration of complete and utter spiritual demise." The music on this recording is mostly slow to mid-paced, set within the uncomfortably harrowing territory between Black Metal and Funeral Doom. The atmosphere is lush, but bleak, exuding a palpable sense of spiritual anguish. Listening closely, one hears within the folds of the densely woven sonic fabric the frayed threads of consciousness coping with the decay of the spirit – the torturous and irremediable collapse of the vaulted chambers of the soul. Mastered specifically for vinyl by BR (Grave Upheaval/Temple Nightside), the sound is spacious and resonant, conjuring the forlorn sensation attendant to profound solitude. The flawless integration of the production with the superb character of the songwriting renders "Remnant Spheres of Spiritual Equilibrium" one of the most mesmerizing and hypnotic Ill Omen recordings to date. To further distinguish this vinyl release, IV enlisted artist Yag Mort to create new cover artwork.

Dave Slave, one of the underground's most unquestionably enigmatic and underappreciated figures, reemerges from a long torpor with the third full-length from his Doomed and Disgusting project called "Satan's Nightmare." Although he remains one of the masters of his trade, Slave has maintained an unassuming position in the scene for years. His music, it is apparent, is not manufactured for the listener and his unbalanced character not a feigned act of Black Metal theater. His solitary focus upon producing the music he wants to make with no regard for rules or customs is precisely the reason it is so compelling. Well known for his wicked virtuosity exhibited as part of the legendary band, Sadistik Exekution, Slave’s solo approach is very different, but no less unique. Sadistik Exekution delivered some of the most frantic and tumultuous tracks ever recorded. The collision of minds in the band, as deranged as they were talented, produced a body of work that has never been surpassed in terms of its raw tempestuous fury. Slave's solo project, Doomed and Disgusting, is no less twisted, but explores entirely different sonic territory in the service of the dark arts. Primarily focusing upon midpaced doom, this project reflects hints of Hellhammer, Goatlord, and Doom Snake Cult, but truly sounds like nothing else. The versatile songwriting, precisely defined guitar tone, wretched and mysterious vocals, and the application of subtle details such as occasional, well-placed keyboards distinguish this album from the usual boring banality of Doom Metal.

For the past year, NWN!, working closely with Sabbat-founder, Gezol, engaged in a campaign to celebrate and honor the 30 year history of Japan's legendary Black Metal pioneers, Sabbat. Most notably, the "Sabbatical Earlyearslaught" box set led to the unearthing of a wealth of obscure, overlooked, and intriguing Sabbat and Sabbat-related material. Those who read closely the text in the accompanying book (meticulously researched and written by Craig "Ixtab" Conrad) will no doubt have had their interest piqued by the reference to Satanas. Gezol's brother, Samm, who was the original Sabbat drummer (and later played in Sacrifice and Magnesium among other bands), formed Satanas around 1988 during a dormant period in Sabbat’s history in which the latter was on a hiatus from performing live. Samm, who played guitar in Satanas, recruited drummer Zorugelion as well as another guitarist named Zakingtaaman. Of course, this is significant because, a few years later Zorugelion would replace Samm as the drummer for Sabbat after Samm began dedicating himself full-time to his work with the aforementioned Sacrifice. Given the subsequent history of the musicians in Satanas, it is easy to understand why the recovery of a recording by this band would be valuable. As it happens, there is a single rehearsal session that was recorded and preserved through the years, and it is every bit as fascinating, both musically and historically, as one would expect. Sonically speaking, Satanas veered toward a thrashing style infused with a palpable evil representative of the band members2 Black Metal proclivities. (The cover of Sodom2s "Outbreak of Evil" featured on this rehearsal recording provides some indication of Satanas' primary influences.) The sound of the recording itself is raw, but the instruments and vocals are audible, and the primitive nature of the recording enhances rather than detracts from the impact of this release. This is the only extant recording of this band that formed a critical point in Japanese Black Metal’s evolutionary arc. Had Satanas continued, it is probable that any subsequent studio recordings would have elevated the band into the upper echelon of Japan’s early Black Metal acts. Instead, fate intervened, the band dissolved, and Satanas remains a curious footnote in the history of the scene. The music, however, speaks for itself and is worthy of reverence based upon its intrinsic musical merit. In order to secure the permanence of this phenomenal recording, NWN! teamed up with High Society Satanic Records to commit this rehearsal to vinyl and thereby solidify the legacy of this interesting project.

Sacrificio's debut 12" is among the most anticipated debuts in recent memory by an otherwise obscure project – little is officially known about Sacrificio except that they hail from Spain. Released earlier this year as a limited promo cassette, Sacrificio’s self-titled debut recording has garnered accolades from nearly all who have embraced its dark emanations. While many bands strive to achieve a style and sound that harkens back to the earliest and evilest progenitors of the Black Metal genre, no band has do so with such a degree of authenticity as Sacraficio. Of particular noteworthiness is the production on this recording. The sound, primitive and unaffected, perfectly captures the band’s atavistic drive to channel some of the legendary bands that ushered in the First Wave of Black Metal. Aftershocks of the earliest recordings of Bathory, Sodom, and Hellhammer can be felt pulsing through the songs on this recording. Even more specifically, Sacrificio’s raw sound and reckless performance is a nod to the seminal South American acts that created and cultivated the bestial style as well as the defiant minimalism of early Eastern European bands. Sacrificio utilized archaic equipment to obtain a genuinely classic atmosphere that has been lost for nearly two decades. The mix, in which the instruments, though seemingly recorded live in the studio, are panned hard and thereby separated into the left and right channels, imbues the recording with a brutal clarity and intimate intensity. While the tracks possess the energy and force or a precipitous rehearsal demo, the quality of the recording ensures that all of the instruments are pronounced and audible. This focused and succinct mLP is a welcome and skillfully written return to tradition and portends the issuance of ever more malefic recordings from Sacrificio.

Release:2015 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Athanatos recently emerged from the storied Chilean underground with this 2014 demo, "Unholy Union," which was previously released on cassette format by Iron Bonehead Productions. The band’s foundational pedigree is strongly rooted in South America’s rich history of unbridled deathrash from the late 1980s and early 1990s. In particular, the drummer, Hateaxes Command, has been actively involved in various regional bands for over twenty years. Most notably, he served as percussionist on all three of Totten Korps’s early demos and their 1992 EP, "Our Almighty Lords." Additionally, he joined Atomic Aggressor in 1991, in time to record their third demo, "Resurrection." However, Athanatos was not formed to merely emulate their historic roots, which oftentimes results in a failed attempt to recapture an ancient sound firmly embedded in the moment. Instead, they have added elements of more modern black/death metal to augment their sound, thus creating a blend that is both true to their heritage and unique at the same time. The riffing, as executed by Imperator Gzophus (guitars / vocals), is at times heavy and percussive, while at other times frenzied and serpentine, occasionally punctuated by judiciously-placed (but not overdone) use of pinch harmonics and tremolo-bar flourishes. As a sum of its parts, "Unholy Union" ultimately succeeds in its attempt to update a sound steeped in tradition.

By the time of Conqueror's dissolution in the late 1990s, J. Read (Cremation, Conqueror, Revenge, Axis of Advance, Blood Revolt, Kerasphorus) had already established himself as the most devastating drummer in the extreme metal underground. Combining the menacing and chaotic fury of Read’s drumming and wrathful vocals with R. Forster's sadistic guitar sound, Conqueror established a new standard of sonic violence. Conqueror was more than just a collection of songs, the band adopted an aesthetic and conceptual approach that defined an entirely new approach to the music. At the time, however, Conqueror's approach was out of fashion and unpalatable for all but an elite faction of the underground. Following Conqueror’s untimely demise, Read pressed forward on his blasphemous deathmarch by forming Revenge, a project that has persisted now for nearly 15 years. With the first EP, "Attack.Blood.Revenge," Read continued his assault in the name of Superion. This EP solidified Read's approach. Focused and hostile, relentless and raw. Revenge’s matchless supremacist assault on this EP remains, after all these years, one the most vicious displays of frenzied Bestial Black Death. While Revenge’s style and line up have changed and evolved since the release of this EP, all of the elements that characterized the band at its inception remain intact even today. With the prominence that Revenge has since earned, it seems fitting to now reissue this classic debut MLP. To augment the material on "Attack.Blood.Revenge", this new 12"/CD edition contains four additional bonus tracks including the "Superion.Command.Destroy" EP, Revenge's track from the split 7” with Arkhon Infaustus, and the band's cover of VoN's "Lamb" that it recorded for inclusion on the 2009 NWN! Fest compilation.
