Almost 10 years have passed since Onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric Chinoiseries LP. 32 Hip-Hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty Chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of Music with his love for classic Hip-Hop production. Using the style of analogue MPC production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly Chinese Music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in Chinese music. The Chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. In that way, “Pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. Onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the Far East and the producer's own development over the preceding 10 years. As a producer who has released records inspired by 80's Funk, 90's Hip-Hop and R'n'B, Electronic and even a Spiritual Jazz project, “Pt. 3” brings this stylised set to a close. Normally a man of few words, Onra has his own take on the three Volumes: I see the first Chinoiseries as a trip, inspired by my own first travel to Asia, each beat representing one particular moment of the journey, the second one, more like a soundtrack to a movie, each beat representing a different scene, and the third one, I tried to create a dark, smoky and mysterious cinematic atmosphere so you could create your own movie in your head. For this last episode, I just really wanted to have fun with this type of material for the very last time. I dug deeper than ever and I have tried to do as many different rhythm patterns as possible, from various influences like Hip-Hop (from different eras), to Bossa to Indian Music to Psych Rock, Soul, etc. and try to portray a different image of Chinese Music.

Welcoming Onra back to All City we are delighted to present the Parisian producers third solo LP on the label titled “Fundamentals”. This record, a paean to 90s hip hop & r n b long players, is a LP which wears its golden era inspirations proudly on its sleeve. Far more than the sum of its influences its a retro futuristic sound looking back but thinking forward. A collaborative project with a busy line up, which has taken a while to cook up, the features run the gamut from back in the day heads to box fresh ones. Taking the production levels up a notch with a more crafted, polished sound across the whole LP, MPC produced with no computer software used! Young Harlem MC Perrion kicks off proceedings he makes the step up from mixtapes to vinyl effortlessly. Cool Kid Chuck Inglish flies solo on “So Long” and long time Onra friend Olivier Day Soul pairs up with Dogg Pounder Daz Dillinger on one for the Lowriders – “We Ridin”. Cult Chicago rap group Do or Die also team up with a soul singer – their old collaborator Johnny P – “Over & Over” has the whole Rap A Lot crew in action and the soulful theme continues with a Suzi Analogue slow jam and Dutch MC Melodee on a Love Tip. KC of bubbling up London collective Last Night in Paris shows why he can count Pharrell among his devotees and other guests include rap crew the Doppelgangaz and Black Milk, who brings it to a close, ending a very personal project for the French producer, built on hip hop and R n B foundations and flipped in his own signature style.

'Same Same but Different', the familiar phrase heard throughout south east Asia, a perfect description to characterize Onra’s latest project, a follow up to his 2007 LP - Chinoiseries. So almost five years later, here we go back on the trail of another Asian beat journey with 32 Hip-Hop instrumentals inspired by Chinese and Vietnamese music. A lot has happened in between: The Big Payback with Byron the Aquarius, a beats LP “1.0.8” plus 2010’s acclaimed boogie tinged hip hop LP “Long Distance” while along the way he’s revisited South East Asia on a few occasions adding to his Asian record stack on each occasion. The exotic, mysterious pop and folk Chinese records of the 60s and 70s with their epic operatic and orchestral feel and sealed from the Western counter culture rumblings of the time, not to mention alive with vintage vinyl hiss and crackle, may not seem the easiest source material to work with but after hermetically sealing himself in his Parisian beat cave Onra has come with a more than worthy return for all the time and money spent in the vinyl basements and backrooms of the Far East. There's ample variation but a coherent whole, from the more electronic feel of "A New Dynasty" and "All Night", to the soundtrack vibe of "Mai's Theme" and "Fight Or Die" and the straight beat sound of "No Matter What" and "Remember The Name" and he's even found some breaks! Inspired by the idea of the LP as a sequence of film scenes this intense burst of beats and distinct vibes form an accomplished rounded full length.
