Following two successful volumes of ‘Journey Into Deep Jazz’ on BBE, proprietor of London’s ‘IF Music’ record store and walking musical encyclopedia Jean-Claude kicks off a new “Introduction To…” album series with this affectionate retrospective of sister labels Black Saint and Soul Note. Cited by some as Italy’s answer to Blue Note, Black Saint and Soul Note have together amassed a catalogue in excess of five hundred albums between 1975 and 2008. Founded by Giacomo Pellicciotti (producer of Enrico Rava’s seminal “Katcharpari” album), Black Saint scored a home run with it’s very first release: Billy Harper’s 1975 “Black Saint” LP, the follow-up to his much lauded “Capra Black” album on Strata-East. Following the blueprint laid down by iconic Italian jazz imprint Horo, Black Saint started life catching recording sessions with American artists as they passed through Italy on tour, as well as releasing Stateside recordings. For nearly three years Black Saint released a plethora of jazz albums by the great and good of the Free-Jazz movement: Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Malachi Favours and Hamiet Bluiett, to name but a few. At the same time, the label was struggling financially and a series of owners came and went in quick-fire succession. In 1978, the company was finally bought by Giovanni Bonandrini and his team, who by 1979 had launched a second label, the brilliant Soul Note. As Black Saint had done previously, the first release on the fledgling sister-label had to be another by Billy Harper. The two labels went onto enjoy much critical acclaim during the mid to late ‘80s, winning ‘The Down Beat Jazz Award’ from 1984 through to 1989. Even Sun Ra and his Arkestra got in on the act; his 1989 epic “Hours After” was released on Black Saint.A snapshot of Black Saint and Soul Note’s first ten years, this album presents only the very choicest cuts, lovingly remastered to vinyl. If you’re already a fan of these labels, you should delight in Jean-Claude’s selections, while if you’ve never come across these jazz jewels from Lombardy / Italy, this compilation will surely blow you away.

A collection of the finest moments of the only two known recording sessions by the King of Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. A man whose poorly documented life and death at 27 have given rise to much legend in the last 30 years, Johnson had little or none public recognition for his work in his lifetime. Rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads to achieve success, Robert Johnson lived his whole life playing at street corners and Saturday night dances, writing the soundtrack for half a century of rock culture to come. Featuring all-time classics such as “I believe I’ll Dust My Broom” or “Kind Hearted Woman Blues”, this is mandatory for all early folk and blues aficionados!

Before Aretha hit big with her stomping southern soul sound in the late 60s, she’d already had quite a career. Beginning as a gospel singer Franklin spent the early 60s recording in a variety of styles to varying success. While her other releases were overproduced and poppy, these very early recordings with the Ray Bryant group are beautiful jazz vocal stylings in the manner of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald. Beautifully recorded with no overdubs this is fantastic early 60s jazz and her voice is as perfect a fit for this material as it is for the soul she’s famous for.

Amazing collection of Disco Music released in the 80s (1980-84) on the Nigerian label Duomo Music Ltd. and reissued here for the first time..The late 70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Mr Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young monied businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black’s “Someone to love” (DSL 001) which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, “Honey, Honey” (DSL 002) was the label’s second release and his most successful album. Also produced the labels 19th release, Bindiga’s, “No More Starvation” (DSL 019), an afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and djs and changes hands for huge sums. Its been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah´s disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time.

First official reissue of Nigerian Boogie Disco Grail LP produced by Grotto for EMI Nigeria and originally released in 1978. Contains dance classic‘Bad city Girl’. Liner notes by Nigerian Music expert Uchenna Ikkone, include previously unpublished photos and extensive interviews by Temitope Kogbe..“Odion Iruoje was the A&R manager at EMI at the time,” Benson says, “and he auditioned us, liked he material and signed us.” Odion Iruoje of course had groomed and produced Ofege. Now he was looking to repeat the formula with other high school groups such as Tirogo, Apples and Question Mark. Grotto’s deep rock would be a welcome addition to this “schoolboy rock” series.Work on their album started immediately, with Iruoje in the producer’s chair. Adapting to the tastes of the times—as well as their own maturing musical sensibilities—Grotto started transitioning from acid rock towards sleeker, more dance floor-friendly grooves. “As I grew older I think I got a bit jazzier,” Benson says. “I also listened to Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isley Brothers, Prince and a lot of funk groups from that era.”“Hard rock was the content of the first album,” Amenechi agrees, “and funk/jazz/R&B the focus of album number two. Especially with the late Toma Mason Jr. joining as bassist.” The group’s second album, Grotto II: Wait… No Hurry (released in 1979) reflected the growing sophistication of its members’ musical outlook. Fat, funky bass grooves rubbed shoulders with jazzy flute lines; space-age synthesizer tones punctuated good, old-fashioned crunchy rock riffs.

For decades, if you wanted to listen to great music all you needed to do was stare at a screen! TV and film soundtracks were often the work of US legends such as Lalo Schiffrin, Oliver Nelson & Quincy Jones, and their Uk counterpartsRonnie Hazelhurst and Alan Hawkshaw, provided the soundtrack to the 60's & 70's at a time when film and TV music was unashamedly funky and featured the ensemble of choice for the jazz arranger.. the big band!A 21st century musician with comparable skills is Andy Tolman - an astounding bass player, but also highly adept at writing & arranging for a big band and who is heavily influenced by those greatest practitioners of the art. Andy met to Nick van Gelder (the original Jamiroquai drummer) and keyboard guru Carl Hudson whilst doing a run of gigs backing artists like Leon Ware and Jean Carne. Andy played Nick You What! and he asked if he could lay a drum track down and at around the same time Carl offered his services on the record also. Nick went on to drum on the entire album and produce the recordings too.At the tail end of 2011, when Freestyle Records A&R man Greg Boramans' compilation 'Sounds From The Soul Underground' was released the glorious noise of The Andy Tolman Cartel first came to public attention. The amazing track You What! had one foot in jazz-funk & the other in film & TV themes of the 60's and 70's, found champions in Jazz FM's Peter Young and BBC 6 Musics Craig Charles who both featured it on their radio shows heavily.

Mr. Clean & The Cleansers' "Karate" was one of them and remained their sole 45 for the label. It was co-written by Ron Buford who is best known for his own recordings on Camelot. Those of you who are familiar with his playing will certainly recognize him on the Hammond B3. As most of the 45s on Camelot they are not that easy to turn up so here you have one hell of a re-issue.

But let me tell you, "Beautiful Day" with its charming intro is no less exciting! First time on vinyl.Key producer of early South African house music and kwaito Professor Rhythm isthe production moniker of South African music man Thami Mdluli. Throughout the1980's, Mdluli was member of chart-topping groups Taboo and CJB, playingbubblegum pop to stadiums. Mdluli became an in-demand producer for influentialartists (like Sox and Sensations, among many others) and in-house producer forimportant record companies like Eric Frisch and Tusk. During the early '80s, Mdluliprojects usually featured an instrumental dance track. These hot instrumentalsbecame rather popular. Fans demanded to hear more of these backing trackswithout vocals, he says, so Mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985as Professor Rhythm. He got the name before the recordings began, from fans, andpositive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to investhimself in a full-on solo project. It was the era just before the end of apartheid andhouse music hadn't taken over yet. There wasn't instrumental electronic music yetin South Afric a. As the '80s came to a close, that was about to change. ProfessorRhythm productions mirror the evolution of dance music in South Africa. Theygrew out of the bubblegum mold - which itself stems from band's channelinginfluences like Kool & the Gang and the Commodores - into something based onmusic for the club. His early instrumental recordings First Time Around andProfessor 3 mostly distilled R&B, mbaqanga and bubblegum grooves into vocal-lesspieces for the dance floor. Musically, these were a success and commercially thealbums all went gold. There were countless bubblegum albums flooding themarketplace, with nearly disposable vocalists backed by mostly similar-soundingrhythm tracks. Most of the lyrical content was light and apolitical. But thekeyboards used formed the musical basis for what would come next. By the timeProfessor 4 and this recording Bafana Bafana - the name references South Africa'snational soccer team - were released in the mid-1990s, k waito had fully emerged.Access to instruments and freedom of expression helped its rise in influenceamong youth. According to Mdluli, "Once Mandela was released from prison andpeople felt more free to express themselves and move around town, kwaito wasbecoming the thing." Lyrically, kwaito championed the local township lingo whileadapting "international music," house music, into the local context. "InternationalMusic," as house music and early kwaito were interchangeably known, in manyways reflects the sounds coming from America. But South Africans made it theirown. Today, the largest part of the music industry is occupied by house music andits relatives.

Reginald Omas Mamode IV follows last year's self-titled debut album with 'Children Of Nu', set for release on 3rd November 2017. The 20 track album draws influence from the world around us, everyday life. As we witness rising poverty, global events, political and ethnic divisions - these factors prompt some of Reginald's themes and call for humanity to recognise we are all interconnected. We are all related. We're all brothers and sisters with common ancestry, common history and a common origin regardless of race, geographic location or belief systems. Love and compassion are universal feelings/practices we all should embrace and apply to all aspects of our lives, our interactions and our relationships, regardless of the kinship'. - Reginald Omas Mamode IV 'Children Of Nu' encompasses Reginald's musical and sonic influences - Afro Roots music through to jazz and soul. It draws from Africa as much as the west, an attempt to make a record that can exist in many contexts, the present, the future and past. Recorded with freedom - most tracks remain from the first take - the process of creating 'Children Of Nu' was an open ended development from a natural, intuitive, starting point. Made with minimal thought of how tracks would end up, the music was led through the creative process. Born of a moment, each track is an attempt to capture that instance, mood, feeling or subject.

Brooklyn’s own Phenomenal Handclap Band are fresh from the studio with two new tracks for their new imprint, Magnifreeq. Producer and founding member Daniel Collás has teamed up with singer and multi-instrumentalist Juliet Swango for this release, an exciting, beat-heavy blend of psych, northern soul, and krautrock, recalling a time when such disparate sounds were mixed together by pioneering DJs at the dawn of New York’s nascent hip hop and underground disco movements.Traveler’s Prayer is an understated psychedelic soul tour-de-force, rich with vocal harmonies and prog rock flourishes. On the flip side is Stepped Into The Light, a gospel tale of redemption set to a driving, krautrock-inflected backdrop, finding the sweet spot between northern soul and proto disco.

Includes four bonus tracks.Les Baxter (1922-1996) used to be an utterly talented composer and bandleader who was on the go to the max during his active years. His version and as I should say vision of jazz music was a contemporary fresh and colorful sound with an exotic vibe due to the use of many elements of latin music within a modernized big band sound. We speak of the exotica and space age era when jazz music became more than just a few musicians on stage in a back street pub sweating their life out while improvising. He draws inspiration from the various swing orchestras of the late 1920s and combines this lush big band approach with a hot south american groove that shows an affinity for Cuban club music, for mambo and salsa. With rhythmical effects and a few wordless female vocal passages added he builds this haunting jungle atmosphere on top while leaving out the too obvious animal voices. The latin jazz and swing elements harmonize fairly well with each other and the melodies Les Baxter and his orchestra create drag you into a different world. You can dance to this or just close your eyes and float upon this gentle river of sound. The tunes are all built and arranged like a movie score which is no wonder as Les Baxter has been a soundtrack composer ever since. What makes this record so special are the pictures that come to ones mind with the always changing soundscapes it features. It is by far not only an evergreen jungle forest with big cats, apes and savage men hunting for white goddesses but also an urban jungle with grey skyscrapers growing beside the dirty streets, a bridge between the exotic dreams of each young American in the 1950s and the often gloomy reality in the big cities. But it is always a joyful experience. The album gets performed by an orchestra of extraordinary talent with an exceptionally tight interplay and still sounds fresh and powerful after nearly 60 years. A reissue is welcome to drag it back into the light of attention as many younger jazz fanatics might have overlooked this gem due to whatever circumstances. This new edition makes sure “Jungle jazz” survives and infects a whole new generation of swing kids.

Mirwood Records’ second release was Jackie Lee’s ‘The Duck’, an uptempo soul swinger that became a big hit and established the Mirwood sound. The house team of producer Fred Smith, arranger James Carmichael, songwriter and backing voices arranger Sherlie Matthews, along with contributions from veteran singer/songwriters Bobby Relf and Earl Nelson (Bob & Earl), made for uptempo soul perfection and they played that beat throughout 1965 and 1966. More US chart action occurred for Mirwood with the Olympics and Bob & Earl but much of their superlative work fell on deaf American ears. It was the British soul aficionados of the early 70s who discovered these masterpieces and played them on the burgeoning Northern Soul scene with dancers revelling in the relentless beats, pleading vocals and sassy female backing. Virtually any Jackie Lee track was a worthy contender and although they never repeated his ‘Duck’ success, the company created soul classics like ‘Do The Temptation Walk’, the later master tape discovery ‘Anything You Want (Any Way You Want It)’ and the anthemic ‘Oh My Darlin’’. Bob & Earl’s hottest number was actually the backing track to Bob’s speedy ‘My Little Girl’, discovered as an accidental LP track in the late 60s. Under the same alias, Bobby Garrett, he had another monster sound with ‘I Can’t Get Away’. Sherlie Matthews composed the hit ‘Mine Exclusively’ for the Olympics and, in a similar stomping vein, wrote ‘The Same Old Thing’ for the group. She penned ‘Don’t Pretend’ for mystery trio the Belles, a studio group consisting of herself along with the Holloway sisters Brenda and Patrice, who were moonlighting while under contract at Motown and Capitol, respectively. Another Los Angeles stable under the auspices of Henry “Hank” Graham threw the Performers into the mix with ‘I Can’t Stop You’ and renamed singer Jimmy Conwell as Richard Temple for a 45 that epitomises Northern Soul ‘That Beatin’ Rhythm’; a credo for a cult. More indie productions came from Eddie LaShae with the Sheppards’ redoubtable ‘Stubborn Heart’ and Sonny Knight’s production of Curtis Lee on his own ‘Is She In Your Town’. Ex-Ike Turner sideman Jimmy Thomas landed at Mirwood in 1966 where Bob Relf recorded him on his own ‘Where There’s A Will (There’s A Way)’. Thomas brought the Ikettes along with him; the company switched their name to the Mirettes for the Sherlie Matthews’ song ‘I Wanna Do Everything For You Baby’.14 vital mid-60s dance records which exemplify why Mirwood is a byword for the best of Northern Soul.

The boogaloo is an infectious and little-defined dance that dominated American dance records in the mid-60s. It was the joyous place where young black and latin youths met and made sweet music. All previous Boogaloo compilations have focused on the latin aspect, “Let’s Do The Boogaloo” looks at how the music crossed over between the two.The boogaloo craze started in Chicago with a record by Tom & Jerryo, but it proved to have an enduring legacy with its hit-making potential running from 1965 through to 1968 – much longer than any other comparable dance. Our earliest records – The infectious ‘Ready Steady Go’ by Prince & Princess, produced by Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller – kicks us off with a frenetic beat and some latin horns. It is the perfect boogaloo crossover.Elsewhere we feature big sounds from both the soul and latin side of the music. Club classics by the likes of Hector Rivera and Roy Lee Johnson, and obscurities by The PS 54 School Yard and Shirley Butler. The musical aspects of this compilation hail from as far apart as Texas and Detroit and Philadelphia and LA, where we found the previously unreleased Bob & Earl Band ‘Boogaloo’.The extensive sleeve notes explain the story of the dance and how the music adapted to it. Bringing together the many strands and explaining what connects Chubby Checker, Charlie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaria and Jimmy Castor. This is musical and dancefloor dynamite that brought together communities, and “Let’s Do The Boogaloo” is the definitive compilation from the genre.

Funkadelic were the most influential group to emerge from Detroit in the 1970s. Their early albums have cast a long shadow over everything that came afterwards in the city. It was music that understood the past but was firmly aiming towards the future and mixed soul, funk and rock into an almost unimaginable stew. Albums such as “Maggot Brain”, “Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow” and “Cosmic Slop” are regularly featured in all-time greatest lists. From the techno pioneered by the likes of Carl Craig and Underground Resistance, to the garage rock revival spearheaded by the White Stripes and the Dirtbombs, all have paid homage to the Parliafunkadelicment Thang. This album is a tribute from some of the most important recording artists currently working in the city to these most influential of forefathers. The very finest talent now active in Detroit appear on the record, being given free rein to work on the multi-track tapes, to rework in any way they see fit. We have full-on remixes, futuristic creations using the original track as an inspiration, disco-fied re-edits and skeletal dubs. Spearheaded by Brendan Gillen of Interdimensional Transmissions, the set features names working across the musical spectrum. There is an appearance by those most mysterious of techno pioneers Underground Resistance, and by Kenny Dixon Jr and his alter-ego Moodymann. The Dirtbombs throw down a frenetic take on ‘Super Stupid’, whilst disco re-edit expert Gaye Marvine adds his magic to ‘Undisco Kidd’. Other contributors include Funkadelic alumni Amp Fiddler, Marcellus Pittman and Anthony Shake Shakir. This is a worthy celebration by New Detroit of its most twisted and illustrious forebears.

Rhythmically, this older version's beat is an opiate, repetitive and soothing, that's gotta be played three times in a row for full effect. The B-side Sad, Sad Day would later be found on the London Muddy Waters Sessions dressed in draping psych, but this original version is a candid and teary-eyed lament complete with perfectly warbling guitar and harmonica interplay.

Originally released as a 78rpm 10'' shellac in 1950, this now-legendary Chicago blues A-side changed the course of Western Music. This one song's influence has been felt all over the world, not to mention its place as the early, primary inspiration for Mick Jagger and company to launch as The Rolling Stones. Anything that made the Stones engage an entire generation of young people can ultimately be traced back to Muddy Waters and this song is ground zero for the rock-n-roll that blew everyone's minds. Walkin' Blues, the B-side, is a standard 12-bar blues song that kicks off with 4 high-pitched staccato strums of the guitar and riffs on the everyday struggle of getting yourself to walk out the door one more time in the morning. This one's straightforward, stirring and maybe even more relatable in the 21st century.

Originally recorded as the sequel to Muddy Waters' and Willie Dixon's 1954 hit Hootchie Cootchie Man and simultaneously as the response to Bo Diddley's 1955 groover I'm A Man, the A-side Manish Boy itself has since become a blues standard, covered by anyone from Erykah Badu to The Band. This song is a staple in the Chicago blues subgenre and also served as a particularly important inspiration for loads of young British musicians, leading up to what would become the British Invasion of the 1960s.Notably, this is the only recording not featuring frequent collaborator Little Walter on harmonica (but was one of the few recordings with Junior Wells) during what was arguably Waters' most fruitful creative period for single blues hits. The swelling, adoring screams of women during the chorus makes this the ideal version. The B-side Young Fashioned Ways was written by friend and bandmate Willie Dixon and is another essential collaboration between the two pillars of the Chicago blues scene. Great title too!

Lion—and the mean ecstasy of “You’ve Got A Woman,” the B-side to their sole release— comprise a rare burst of psychedelic-Western soul from two names best known for Dutch progressive rock and new wave. Drummer Peter de Leeuwe, departing from the symphonic leanings of Dutch prog-fixtures Ekseption, penned it in 1975, layering syncopated explosions of hand-claps, vibraslap and slick drumwork with neutron-star density, with super-producer Hans van Hemert nearly bursting Glenn Robles’ vocals through the fore. The “Shoes Subtle Edit” provides exactly that, gently teasing the organ- and requintohinted contours of the track to better suit the treasure within. Chicago-based septet Whitney have brought some attention to “You’ve Got A Woman” with a recent cover, and the faith with which they recreate much of the original instrumentation proves the extent of Lion’s accomplishment.

Ten years ago we were excited to release an archival collection of the sweetest soul from upstate New York in the 1960s, BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE.... The beautifully packaged LP sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul.So to respond to the demand of soul fans worldwide we’re releasing a remastered pressing of IF THIS WORLD WAS MINE... for all of those who missed out on this sensational album the first time around, this time with TWO bonus cuts.In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, NY label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do play back with unconventional humanity and anomalous presence.William’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realised in his lifetime, but in February 2007 we jumped at the chance to pull together these sweet and soulful recordings into an album that’s remained a Daptone favorite ever since.A decade later and we’re thrilled that it’s back in the racks at your favorite purveyor of soulful platters.Remastered with two new songs not previously available on the original version, “I Really Love You” and “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know).”

Revival is an as-of-yet totally undiscovered electric jazz rock recording from 1977 composed by visual artist and multi instrumentalist Herbert Bodzin. It features brilliant soulful fusion with echoed Fender Rhodes, phased flute, and electric bass and guitar. Most tracks are overdubbed with synthesizers. Fellow musicians are Hans Kämper (of legendary Krautrock group Annexus Quam), Bernd Szemeitzke, Peter Johannesdotter and Bernd Schöttner. Unreleased instrumental versions taken from the rare protest album "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte".."In 2016, a friend of mine randomly told me about a "…German Placebo album" - he was referring to the Marc Moulin led Belgian jazz fusion supergroup. Of course, this was an audacious comparison and he may have only used it to gain my attention. So he continues with "well, not really - but this album certainly has some breaks". He was talking about the Niedersächsiche Schlachteplatte - an album that I had neither seen nor heard about.A few weeks later, I had a copy in my hands. Here was an LP that had been privately released in early 1977 by an artist collective as a protest action against the division and reformation of several rural districts close to Bremen. The original recording itself is an odd mixture of fusion jazz and "Platt", a northern German dialect, which is pretty hard to understand, even for most Germans. The idea for the project initially came from Mr. Gronau, a political activist and art teacher from Heiligenfeld. Assisted by Mrs. Traute Dittmann, they both provided the lyrics for the album. The musical background was written and composed entirely by Herbert Bodzin. I contacted Bodzin immediately when I heard the record. The story began.Although Herbert Bodzin, born in 1936 close to Dortmund, may be little known within jazz circles nowadays, he was a prominent figure in the local scene in his day. He played piano, saxophone and flute and had been experimenting with synthesizers since the early 1970s. From 1957 until 1964, in the golden age of European modern jazz, he was in charge of the Jazzclub Hohenlimburg, in partnership with pianist Heinz Wendel. The scene nurtured countless fabulous jam sessions with local musicians and also led to contacts with other German and European jazzmen. Klaus Doldinger was invited a few times as well as the George Maycock Quintet from Düsseldorf, some of the best of the hard bop groups in Germany at that time. Bodzin even recalls how he used to jam with Peter Herbolzheimer in the mid 1960s, while legendary trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and Dutch jazz pianist Jack van Poll inspired his playing as well. While the public interest in jazz waned with the rise of the Beatles and other beat bands, Bodzin continuously sought out new developments within the genre. The days of Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, and Jazz Rock came, bringing with them electrification and further tonal and rhythmic innovation. Meanwhile, Bodzin lived in Weye, close to Bremen - one of the districts that were about to be reformed. When it was time to perform the "Schlachteplatte”, he was ready with his Fender rhodes and his new synthesizers to provide what he called "Modern Jazz Rock", as noted on the back of the original album sleeve. The recording session with the band took place in two days in late 1976 at Boccacio, a small studio in Bremen. On the third day, Bodzin went back into the studio to record the synth backgrounds. The band consisted of Hans Kämper, former member of the legendary Krautrock band Annexus Quam, on trombone and guitar. Bernd Szemeitzke and Peter Johannesdotter, both local artists, featured on drums and percussion, while Bernd Schöttner played electric bass. Though the quintet didn't exist for very long and was initiated originally for the recording session only, a few live performances at political events took place. One of the bigger ones was "Das große Schlachtfest" on February 27th, a major event among the many actions against the division and reformation of the local districts. The record itself was released just six days earlier, on February 22nd, 1977. 500 copies of the album were pressed, recalls Mr. Bodzin. The price was 12 DM (German marks, roughly about 6 EUR). About 300 were sold to the local constituency, almost entirely within non-jazz circles. The name "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte" is a play on words. Niedersachsen is the region in question, whereas "Schlachteplatte" is a German meal with sausages and meat - the name literally translates to "slaughter dish" - a reference to how the land of Hoya was to be slaughtered.Even though the combination of jazz and spoken word was moderately popular during that time, because of it's extreme locality, and perhaps also because it was politically motivated, the album was never a huge success. The few jazz fans that were reached by this album could not relate to the artwork and prose, and many local listeners could not relate much to the progressive music. Hence, the Schlachteplatte slipped into obscurity.Nevertheless, the compositions and themes, the instrumentation with drums and percussion, electric bass, trombone, Bodzin's delayed piano, the phased flute and his overdubbed synth "string arrangements" make this album a serious hidden treasure. It is arguably one of the most unique German jazz recordings from the 1970s. It stands apart from most contemporary fusion as it retains notable touches of Bodzin’s bebop and hard bop influences, yet builds progressive and even psychedelic elements into it. The musicians provided uptempo tunes such as Landswien Hoya (Land of Hoya), deep psychedelics on Kreisteilung (Flute of Freedom), 6/8 grooves on Ik kann di seggen (Let Me Tell You This) and more.Due to the short run and its strictly local distribution the original record really never made it to the surface for jazz and rare groove collectors. Even in recent years and during the German rare groove trend in the late 90s it remained undiscovered. Unsurprisingly, the LP was not added to the Discogs.com database until late 2017. The aforementioned friend simply used it as a nice odd trade item with other vinyl collectors when original backstock copies of the album were being given away for a short time in 2013 at a local newspaper and later sold from a museum for a low price until they were gone.Unfortunately, instrumental master tapes from before the vocals were overdubbed in a later session are inevitably lost. Either thrown away from the studio or, more likely, destroyed during a fire in September 1986 when an arsonist was active in Bodzin's hometown of Weye. One night, while he was away at a birthday ball, Bodzin's house - a 250 year old historical building - became engulfed in flames. Herbert Bodzin lost almost all of his personal belongings including an array of early synthesizers and his TEAC tape reels. Luckily and most importantly, his wife and four children were safe.Because of the nonexistence of the master tapes, we carefully re-edited and re-mastered the material from a mint vinyl copy to a version whose quality surprised even us. All tracks still have a length of 4 minutes, the arrangements are intact and one surely will not miss anything. Any of the six tracks is a winner, and has something for everyone! Our approach to this album required fresh artwork and new title because of the omission of the original political speech and poetry. Even though we respect the political aspirations of the artists of the original work, and appreciate the lyrical approach of the "Platt" dialect, we hope that the new recording, "Revival", can finally reach the ears and hearts of jazz fans and fusion enthusiasts. It may not be "…a German Placebo", but Herbert Bodzin's brilliant compositions and beautiful production represents an important missing piece in German jazz history.By the way, while in contact with Herbert Bodzin - who is now 80 years old and still active as steel artist, painter and musician - we were led to a totally unreleased recording employing experimental synths from 1982 that survived the fire. This unreleased masterpiece will be entitled "Revival II" and is slated to be our next project on "The Artless Cuckoo".

Limited to 250 copies.Righteous funk from the Smoke & Smile Band – really sounding great on "Africa" – a cut that almost feels like it was pulled from some Roy Ayers sessions of the late 70s! The tune's upbeat, has great keyboards, and this chunky funky groove that's as righteous as the lyrics! "Black High" is great too – a wicked bit of 70s-styled jazz funk, with a nicely edgey set of horn solos in the middle! When's the full album? We can't wait!

Limited to 250 copies.A sweet onomatopoeic groove from Iron Souls – a funky instrumental that really seems to have the riffing guitar making the "shibba shabba" sound of the title – while also getting nicely fuzzy and distorted, as funky drums keep a razor-sharp energy at the core! The guitar's equally distorted on "Jungle" – and the drums are maybe a bit too – almost as if they've been played tight and funky, but spun backwards – although maybe that's just our ears!

The Outsiders' is the new album from "absurdly prolific" (Scenstr Magazine) multi-award winning composer, producer and bass player Ross McHenry. Known for his work as bandleader ofThe Shaolin Afronauts, Ross has collaborated with the likes of Mark de Clive Lowe, Corey King and Marcus Strickland, and been heralded as "The Future of Australian Jazz" (PBS FM).This is his third album release for us at First Word (following 'Child of Somebody' in 2016 and 'Distant Oceans' in 2013), but his first trio album. Joining McHenry on this new venture are long time collaborators, NZ drumming powerhouse and First Word label mate Myele Manzanza and NY based multi-award winning Australian pianist Matthew Sheens. 'The Outsiders' is dynamic trio jazz from the perspective of three forward thinking musicians who although steeped in the jazz tradition are not bound by jazz influences alone.Six-track vinyl album (with two additional tracks on the digital release), this also includes extensive sleeve-notes written by Ross himself.

This autumn, Wah Wah 45s are very proud to present their latest signing, an outfit who've garnered huge praise from Jools Holland, are darlings of The Guardian's music reviews pages, and have set festivals alight up and down the country with their unique melange of sounds. For a good few years, Honeyfeet has been a conduit for the ideas and expressions of an exotic mixture of Manchester based musicians. Jazz? Yes, some of that! Folk? Stick that in there! Hip-hop? I thought you'd never ask! Someone once called it Folk-Hop and Barrelhouse-pop, and that's just vague enough to make sense. It helps that they are fronted by R. Connolly, Real World's newest signing and "a remarkable singer and flautist who can ease from Irish traditional influences to soul" (The Guardian). This extraordinary band's debut single for Wah Wah 45s, Sinner, was originally affectionately known as Boingy Squelch, after the unconventional sounds trombonist Biff Roxby used in his early demos. Roghnach conveys the story of a woman who never intends on staying at home "chained to the sink" - "I may be a sinner, but I'm not a slave". In that way, the song is a rejection of outdated, traditional roles.Since their previous album, 2013's It's a Good Job I Love You, keyboardist John Ellis jumped on board as full-time member, bringing his unique musical presence. This enabled the development of a more texturally adventurous style, as witnessed with the dual atonal solo between himself and guitarist Ellis Davies on Sinner. Similarly, for their next LP, Orange Whip, engineer, bassist and spiritual guide Lorien Edwards makes his Honeyfeet recording debut, so completing the "kitchen" of this very special band.Sinner is released on limited 7" vinyl (100 copies only!) on October 20th and comes complete with a woozy, low slung club-friendly mix from former Innocent Sorcerer, Polish DJ and producer Envee.

Another 1960s 7inch soul gem, unearthed and held up to the light courtesy of Rocafort Records. The heroine of this story is Atlanta-born Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell, schooled in the art of gospel and jazz, but banned by her mother to sing any R'n'B…. that is until Delia met the Mighty Hannibal, a powerhouse bluesy soul producer and future husband who put her up where she belonged and got her singing about stuff that her mother wouldn't have approved of.Mid-tempo stomper, 'I must be doing something right', is an irresistible sassy classic, originally the B side of the single 'If you got what it takes (they can't take what you got)' released on Maverick Records. The horns and drums tease the toe-tapping rhythm along while Delia belts out with raw fire about not being a great looker, cook or housecleaner for her man, "but when it's time for sleeping, he thinks I'm something outtasight. I must be doing something right". Cheeky in spirit, chunky in swing. Full of all the urgency and feistiness you'd expect from a repressed southern soul vocalist.Written by Delia and Hannibal, 'Fight fire with fire' boasts a similar production style but this time with a prominent electric guitar riff, emotive strings and heavenly backing vocals. Describing the cheating man who's gonna get exactly what he dishes out, Delia reads out the riot act with more punchy promise than threat.A must for all 7inch soul collectors, a thing of rare beauty.

The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album, 'Push On'. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on the sound with raw Funk, Psych, Northern Soul, and Boogie influences, The Allergies enlisted two giants of underground Hip-Hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection. Besides bringing the party on tracks like 'Main Event', he also settles scores with 'It Won't Be Me', before destroying all-comers on the battle Rap behemoth, 'Buzzsaw'. Also joining in on the action is UK MC veteran, Dr Syntax (The Mouse Outfit, Foreign Beggars) who prescribes some more healthy Hip-Hop advice on the track 'Remedy'.Other highlights include the vintage Soul stomper, 'Entitled to That', Sixties uptempo groover, 'Hold You Close', and the fantastic little strutter, 'Get Down On You'. All in all it's a brand new set of future classics from your new favourite funky beatmakers, The Allergies.

The Soul7 label is back with bang with a double sided treasure from the early '80s by a little known Detroit band called Pure Pleasure. DJs and dancers alike will love this full-sounding remastered 7" repress! It's hard to decide which of the two sides is better, the outstanding, uplifting "By My Side" is considered 'the track' - but don't dismiss the flip! Co-written and sung by Barbara Love, 'By My Side' is a super charged mid-tempo vocal dancefloor fave that's a blinder from the start with driven, tight horn and bass stabs swinging into a stunning two step soul track with the perfect beat. It,'s as wonderful on first hearing today as it was back in 1981. 'I remember heading down to Indianapolis to cut this record. We had a lot of fun' Barbara told us recently, 'I don't know why we went all the way down there, it was all over in a day'.On the flip "Dancin & Prancin", a true dancer from the off, disco jazz funk bass groove and a top class vocal from Tony D. Perfect sounding for today's modern soul clubs - it even includes a nice b-boy disco drum break! The band members all went to the same school in Detroit back in the late '60s. Upon leaving school the boys started a band called The Soulful Sonics in the early '70s. Barbara used to gig with them on occasion but nothing was ever recorded. The band changed their name to Pure Pleasure in the mid '70s and in 1979 they asked Barbara to join. Around June 1980 'By My Side' had been written and the group were finally readly to release a 45 on their own label. QC Records was born - it stood for "Quick Cash"!Unfortunately, like many bands after their first release, tensions arose which caused a breakup. In this case it was disruption within the band due to Barbara getting the lion's share of credit and attention. But years late Pure Pleasure is back together doing gigs and rockin' the crowds, and this 45 lets the music live on.

Beloved DJ, compiler and incurable vinyl junkie, Kev Beadle returns to BBE with a 3rd volume of his much lauded ‘Private Collection’ album series. Taking in a wide range of obscure jazz with a distinct nod to the dance-floor, the first two ‘Private Collections’ are already considered classics by the jazz-dance community. Once again presenting a wealth of ultra-rare sounds previously only available to record collectors with very deep pockets, Vol.3 sees Kev inviting us to travel even deeper into the vinyl vaults.Quite a lot has happened in the 3 years since ‘Private Collection Vol.2’ was released, not least Kev’s announcement last year that he was hanging up his headphones. We hope, selfishly, that his retirement won’t last, but either way, the news has given this compilation some added significance for us. A founder of London’s legendary Dingwalls and former Wag club resident, Kev has been at the very centre of the UK’s jazz-dance scene for decades, locked in (friendly) competition with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Bob Jones and many others on a never-ending quest for that perfect track. As you might expect, ‘Private Collection Vol.3’ contains its fair share of frenetic, syncopated musical workouts to test the stamina of even the most dedicated dancers, but the album also provides some moments of calm, some smooth Latin grooves like Louis Hayes version of the Freddie Hubbard classic ‘Little Sunflower’ as well as very rare, sought after recordings by Belair, Lee Willhite and the Webster Lewis that have changed hands for big money in recent times.Whether you are a record collector or a jazz club regular, this compilation represents a chance to finally own more than a few ‘holy grail’ tunes without breaking the bank and a chance to relive those special moments on the dance-floor. For the rest of us, this is simply a glorious concoction of 70s and 80s jazz, rescued from relative obscurity, painstakingly assembled and presented with a great deal of love.

Ezel’s lively jam ‘Get Down’ summons up classic Jamiroquai with slick and funky acid jazz stylings. Italian producer Turbojazz re-imagines the club classic 'Strings Of Life' as a tempo-shifting electronic jazz odyssey. London producer Ossie’s ‘I Hurt You’ lays down a simple house groove and in a strange co-incidence chooses to sample the same 70’s acapella that our friend J Dilla famously used on the Slum Village classic ‘Players’. Finally, Snarky Puppy pianist Bill Laurance shows of pure jazz chops with ‘The Pines’, a timeless and efortless work of art.

In 1969 a local Philly group, The Intrigues, hit pay dirt with their self penned song “In A Moment”, initially released on their own Bullet label. This Thom Bell and Bobby Martin song was later picked up by the NYC Yew label and made it to #10 in the R&B charts that same year. An album entitled “In A Moment” and a further five Yew 45’s followed although none of these were able to replicate the success of their initial hit. Following two 45 releases on GRT’s Janus label in 1972, The Intrigues, Alfred (Al) Brown, Ronald Hamilton, James Harris and James Lee Jr later disbanded. Once again Al Brown was looking to form another vocal group and fortuitously for him found another Philly outfit, The Coalitions of “Instead How Are You” (and later Soul Junction) fame, who having lost their own lead singer Tony (Talent) Anderson, decided to merge with Al to form a new version of The Intrigues. This new look Intrigues featuring Al Brown, Alan Williams, Stephen Ferguson, Milton Williams and Bruce Fauntleroy who began to perform shows arranged for them by a New Jersey booking agent by the name of Lucille White. It is reputedly believed that Ms White was later responsible for introducing The Intrigues to record producer James “Channey” Turner a colleague of brothers Mervin “Lyric” and Melvin “Mystro” Steals. The Steals brothers former members of the group The Four Perfections of “I’m Not Strong Enough” (Partytime) fame, went on to become one of Philadelphia’s most prolific songwriting teams, their credits include, Magic Night’s perennial favourite “If You And I Had Never Met” (Roulette), “I’ll Do Anything For You, Ecstasy”, Passion And Pain (Roulette) a song later covered by Lee McDonald on his desirable Debbie Records “Sweet Magic” album. But the real jewel in the crown of the Steals songbook is their 1972 Spinners million seller “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” (Atlantic). The Steals brothers are currently producing in collaboration with Detroit main man McKinley Jackson a new CD EP project on the Chairman Of The Board (Featuring Ken Knox).During 1978 The Intrigues under the Steals brothers and James “Channey” Turner supervision entered Bill Holland’s New Jersey Studio to record the five featured Steals Brothers penned songs. Although never issued back in the day the recent discovery of a studio tape by Alan Williams has at last given us the opportunity to give these fine Philly soul songs the exposure they richly deserve. It is Alan Williams who provides the lead vocals on the uplifting title track “If The Shoe Fits” as well as the other two movers “AM To The PM” and “Give Her The Love That She Needs”. With Milton Williams leading on the sumptuous ballad “Let Me Love You Tonight” and Stephen Ferguson too showing his prowess as a balladeer on “You Are So Dear To Me”. Philly Soul at it’s very best!

Some records are timeless and never age - "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" by The Main Ingredient is one of those records. Originally released in 1974, "Happiness" was a record before it's time - had it been released a year later it would undoubtedly have been one of the first 12" discs - so as a result, most discerning DJs at the time chose to play the album cut. The song is actually a cover of UK Prog-Jazz band Brian Auger's Oblivion Express's version from the year before but Main Ingredient took the song to a whole new level and, 44 years later, it has become one of the most revered dance tunes of all-time. Main Ingredient were unlucky with 12" releases, which is why we're delighted to give "Evening Of Love" it's first-ever 12" release! Once again this was a 1981 album track which years later it would become a Modern Soul anthem and rightfully be regarded as one of their best records.

Yet another highly in-demand 12" from the Philadelphia International stable and an artist whose records never go out of date! This is a killer double-sided beauty with the frenetic and jazzy "Life On Mars" from his debut 1976 album on the top-side and the mellow all-time classic and soul boy anthem "The Sweetest Pain" from 1979 on the flip. Two very different sides of a great artist, both of which show the level of diversity that he was capable of producing. The last legitimate release of this was back 1999 and a Mint copy will currently set you back circa £50, if you can ever find one. Fully remastered on limited edition 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.
