Only one copy per customer!Wicked reissue of this jazz rarity on Superfly, tip!The music on “A Spirit Speaks” is a treasure trove of classical African-American music -- It is a unique blend of heart moving, soul stirring Spirituals, Blues, and Jazz with layers of beautiful operatic vocals. One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon".

There is a long-standing love affair between DJ Harvey and Pikes, Ibiza. The love, the dancing, the music and the Balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by DJ Harvey has seen Mercury Rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade. The next step in the Harvey and Pikes story sees him launch Pikes Records – the first record label founded by Pikes owners and Ibiza Rocks Co-Founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. On the label, Harvey explains: “I see so many avenues to work together to release music, everything from live recordings from Ibiza Rocks and Pikes, mix tapes, original productions, showcasing new artists, there’s all sorts of avenues to open up.”With the finer details still under wraps, it’s safe to say fans can look forward to the first release being Harvey’s very own Mercury Rising compilation. But what can we expect from the third instalment of Mercury Rising? Putting it quite simply, “Just a serious good time really” says Harvey. The Sound Of Mercury Rising will be released September 1st on Pikes Records and DJ Harvey and his infamous all night long sets return for Mercury Rising from Monday 7th August to 25th September at Pikes Hotel.

Following up on the smashing success of El Michels Affair’s Return To The 37th Chamber, El Michels Affair drops one more 45 for the collectors. The A side is the crushing cover of the Wu classic “Shadowboxin” off GZA’s cinematic masterpiece Liquid Swords. El Michels Affair takes the tune and makes it their own with dancing guitar licks, floating organ notes, and their signature heavy drums. The B side is a treat for the fans, a non-album cut, they cover Ghostface’s “Iron Maiden”, the tune that opened up and set the tone for his debut classic Ironman. El Michels smashes this one with a frantic off beat intro that drops into a heavy duty cover of the tune. The inimitable studio prowess of Michels is higlighted all over this track in the nuances and arrangements. Play it loud, and also smoke something and play it in your headphones. Another Big Crown sureshot.

The musicians brought in strains of Latin American, Indian, and Native American music, while imbuing the recordings with spirituality and soulfulness. Four tracks in all. Funkadelic were the most influential group to emerge from Detroit in the 1970s. Their early albums have cast a long shadow over everything that came afterwards in the city. It was music that understood the past but was firmly aiming towards the future and mixed soul, funk and rock into an almost unimaginable stew. Albums such as “Maggot Brain”, “Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow” and “Cosmic Slop” are regularly featured in all-time greatest lists. From the techno pioneered by the likes of Carl Craig and Underground Resistance, to the garage rock revival spearheaded by the White Stripes and the Dirtbombs, all have paid homage to the Parliafunkadelicment Thang. This album is a tribute from some of the most important recording artists currently working in the city to these most influential of forefathers. The very finest talent now active in Detroit appear on the record, being given free rein to work on the multi-track tapes, to rework in any way they see fit. We have full-on remixes, futuristic creations using the original track as an inspiration, disco-fied re-edits and skeletal dubs. Spearheaded by Brendan Gillen of Interdimensional Transmissions, the set features names working across the musical spectrum. There is an appearance by those most mysterious of techno pioneers Underground Resistance, and by Kenny Dixon Jr and his alter-ego Moodymann. The Dirtbombs throw down a frenetic take on ‘Super Stupid’, whilst disco re-edit expert Gaye Marvine adds his magic to ‘Undisco Kidd’. Other contributors include Funkadelic alumni Amp Fiddler, Marcellus Pittman and Anthony Shake Shakir. This is a worthy celebration by New Detroit of its most twisted and illustrious forebears.

Four Flies Records is back in full force, this time with an reissue of an EP released earlier in 2017 that looks at the more sophisticated and modern dancefloor... The Italian label embarked on another journey of rediscovery, a specialty they seem to master. The destination of this trip was a dusty vault in Africa, where a famous Italian musician moved years ago... The Italian film and TV industry provided in the 60s and 70s countless opportunity for talented musicians to compose and produce a rich variety of music: soundtracks, library music, experimental music – an infinite amount of recordings that still represents a paradise for the most curious and passionate diggers. So here we have the proof that there’s still lot to discover. Alessandro Alessandroni is one of those pioneers, a maestro that built the legend of Italian soundtracks and library music along with Ennio Morricone, Piero Umiliani and many others. His vault testifies how prolific had been those times, with hundreds of tapes and obscure recordings from that period. Among the many, a dusty tape bearing the hand-written label “Afro Discoteca” captured the attention of Four Flies. The music contained in the tape had never been released until now. When he listened to the tracks, Italian legendary DJ LEO MAS (one of the undisputed inventors of the Balearic sound) told us: “It is surprising to listen to something that sounds so modern... This EP is the perfect union of Afro influences and Italian taste. There’s something Afro lounge here but also incredibly cinematic – it makes me think of John Carpenter’s atmospheres. B1 (Afrodiscoteca) reminds me of clubs I’ve been in Malindi in the late 70s and the closing track is absolutely spellbinding.

Ebo Taylor is a legendary guitarist, composer, arranger and producer from Accra, Ghana. A leading light of Ghanaian music since the 1960’s, Taylor is still touring and recording, and at the age of 80 will be releasing a brand new studio album on Mr Bongo in 2018.For this album, Ebo joined forces with 12-piece band ‘The Pelikans’ — from the Cape Coast region of Ghana — led by Bessa Simmona, with rhythm guitarist Fifi Orleans Lindsay. A genuine ‘holy-grail’ of Ghanaian music and one of Ebo’s most sought-after.The album was released on the small Abookyi label. Named after a nightclub they played in called PELIKANS, and sung in English and Fante, this was the first album where Ebo sang on tracks, such as the classic ‘Come Along’, on which he also plays keyboard. This song clearly defined a new direction in highlife and has become a Ghanaian funk anthem. ‘Come Along’ formed the basis of Sadat X’s ‘Remember That’ hip hop jam from 2011.This official Mr Bongo re-issue is packaged in our new & improved heavyweight ‘tip-on’ sleeves; printed in Japan, pressed on high quality vinyl, with label designs and artwork as per the original release.Ebo’s forthcoming new studio album, ‘MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS’ is set for release in spring 2018, on Mr Bongo.

Here at Quantize we simply love confounding expectations 'cos, guess what? We love all kinds of music and don't like to be stereotyped. But this one even surprised the hell out of us - so much so that we figured it deserved a 7" vinyl release in tribute to the original format."Think (About It)" was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery Lyn Collins. Produced by the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown, it barely scraped into the RnB Top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great James Brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of Hip-Hop artists like Roxanne Shante and Robe Base and DJ E-Z Rock. Suddenly the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling and since that point, "Think (About It)" has been sampled 1908 times and is the No.3 most-sampled record of all time. So we decided to cut a new version of it with real musicians and one of the few vocalists that would be capable of matching Lyn Collins firepower - Dance Music's diva supreme, the incredible Barbara Tucker. We wanted Barbara to really cut loose on this and she didn't disappoint. And yes, those are real keyboards, real guitar and real horns. Believe us, this session was off the scale! So when we finally got our breath back we decided we HAD to get this out on a 45 on its 45th anniversary! It seemed the most appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves. We believe "Think (About It)" will have universal appeal pretty much everywhere since the song is now implanted within the DNA of dance music across the world.

“I Tell a Fly” is the second album by English artist and poet Benjamin Clementine. It follows his Mercury Prize-winning debut album, “At Least for Now”. Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine (born 1988), also known as Benjamin Clementine, is an English artist, poet, composer, and musician.Born and raised in London, England, Clementine later moved to Paris, France becoming homeless as a teenager. There, his performances helped him to become a cult figure in the music and art scene. Moving back to London, he made his TV debut on the BBC programme Later With Jools Holland in 2013. Dubbed as becoming one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his generation, most critics have honoured him citing and describing him as a man of unusual intelligence, great piano style and deep musicality with charisma on stage. Nonetheless, they have found it difficult to place his music in one specific genre, mostly stating that it is beyond categorisation. However, his vocal range, ability, and diction has mostly been compared to those of Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone, and his passionate vocal delivery to that of Edith Piaf.Considered by The New York Times as one of the 28 geniuses who defined culture in 2016, Clementine's compositions are musically incisive and attuned to the issues of life but also poetic, mixing revolt with love and melancholy, sophisticated lyricism with slang and shouts, and rhyming verse with prose monologues. He moved from busking to music halls, to symphonic music and spoken word, breaking free from traditional song structure, inventing his own dramatic and innovative musical territory. He is noticeably seen topless and barefoot onstage, dressed entirely in black or dark grey, with a long, wool trench coat.Despite failing to chart in the UK, his debut album “At Least for Now” won the 2015 Mercury Prize and fared better across mainland Europe. At the end of 2015, Clementine was included in The Guardian's New Year's honours list to celebrate heroes of 2015. Debrett's and the London Evening Standard named him one of the most influential people in Britain.

The Soul7 label is back with bang with a double sided treasure from the early '80s by a little known Detroit band called Pure Pleasure. DJs and dancers alike will love this full-sounding remastered 7" repress! It's hard to decide which of the two sides is better, the outstanding, uplifting "By My Side" is considered 'the track' - but don't dismiss the flip! Co-written and sung by Barbara Love, 'By My Side' is a super charged mid-tempo vocal dancefloor fave that's a blinder from the start with driven, tight horn and bass stabs swinging into a stunning two step soul track with the perfect beat. It,'s as wonderful on first hearing today as it was back in 1981. 'I remember heading down to Indianapolis to cut this record. We had a lot of fun' Barbara told us recently, 'I don't know why we went all the way down there, it was all over in a day'.On the flip "Dancin & Prancin", a true dancer from the off, disco jazz funk bass groove and a top class vocal from Tony D. Perfect sounding for today's modern soul clubs - it even includes a nice b-boy disco drum break! The band members all went to the same school in Detroit back in the late '60s. Upon leaving school the boys started a band called The Soulful Sonics in the early '70s. Barbara used to gig with them on occasion but nothing was ever recorded. The band changed their name to Pure Pleasure in the mid '70s and in 1979 they asked Barbara to join. Around June 1980 'By My Side' had been written and the group were finally readly to release a 45 on their own label. QC Records was born - it stood for "Quick Cash"!Unfortunately, like many bands after their first release, tensions arose which caused a breakup. In this case it was disruption within the band due to Barbara getting the lion's share of credit and attention. But years late Pure Pleasure is back together doing gigs and rockin' the crowds, and this 45 lets the music live on.

Strut present a new reissue of Walter Gibbons’ ‘Jungle Music’ compilation LP,the definitive collection of Gibbons’ groundbreaking remixes during theheyday of New York’s disco era.Starting out as a DJ and known for his skilful manipulation of percussive disco breaks at his Galaxy 21 residency in Manhattan, Gibbons brought this ethic to his remixes from the start with his first outing for Salsoul, a re-work of Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ which completely disassembled the track for the dancefloor. He developed a knack for drawing the rhythmic essence out ofboth the brilliant and the mediocre as tracks like Jakki’s ‘Sun… Sun… Sun’were transformed into unique abstract dancefloor beat edits. The tracks spawned a series of groundbreaking remixes, with many versionsonly appearing on acetate for his own personal use as a DJ including Gladys Knight’s ‘It’s A Better Than Good Time’. He continued to work with Salsoul(Loleatta Holloway) and West End Records (Bettye Lavette) before branchingout to include more leftfield material in his work – collaborations with LooseJoints’ Steve D’Acquisto (Sandy Mercer), Steve Standard (Strafe) and ArthurRussell would all follow, a natural fit for Gibbons’ uncompromising remix style. After a short time based in Seattle during the late ‘70s, where he played atthe Sanctuary nightclub, he returned to New York and, in his later years, he discovered God and refused to play records with a negative message.Tragically, he died of an AIDS related illness during the ‘90s, a largelyforgotten figure. Now revered as a true pioneer of the art of the remix, Gibbons’ key releasesare brought together on this essential celebration. Package includes sleevenotes by Tim Lawrence, author of the acclaimed ‘Love Saves The Day’,along with rare photos from across Gibbons’ career as a DJ and producer.

XL Middleton returns with his new album “Things Are Happening”.XL Middleton is a musician from California whose format falls into the funk-laden style the region has traditionally been known for. The Pasadena-based artist/producer has been hard at work for years crafting melodic, chord-heavy tunes and which have earned him accolades on major platforms, as well as national print coverage in the Washington Post and major local print coverage in LA Weekly, where his album “Tap Water” made it to a Best of 2015 list. XL has toured internationally in Japan, Canada, and throughout Europe, catering to fans of the funked-out West Coast sound.XL has released volumes of work, the sound of which embodies the party feel, bringing music back to where it was before it found its way into upscale clubs, while at the same time mixing it with a futuristic brand of funk inspired by legends such as George Clinton, Roger Troutman, & Cameo, not to mention hip hop funksters like Battlecat & DJ Quik. He evolved from his beginnings as a hip hop artist to a full-fledged modern funk musician, educated by the music he once sampled in the course of creating rap beats. In addition, he founded another imprint, MoFunk Records, with Funkmosphere resident DJ and fellow LA native Eddy Funkster. XL has also released music in conjunction with noteworthy labels such as Bastard Jazz, Omega Supreme, and Voltaire, effectively bridging the gap between fans of modern funk/80's boogie and 90's g-funk, all of which has been tremendously influential to the XL Middleton sound.

Only one copy per customer!Martinique is an island in the Lesser Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea found between the Greater Antilles (Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rica) to the north-west and the continent of South America to the south. Martinique is one of the eighteen regions of France (there are five overseas regions) and an integral part of the French Republic. As part of France, Martinique is also part of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro. The official language is French, and virtually the entire population speaks Antillean Creole. It was first claimed by France in 1635 under the reign of King Louis XIII.Located geographically closer to the United States than to Europe, the Antilles absorbed jazz and mixed it with the traditional rhythms of their islands: the Biguine, Gwo Ka, Tumbélé. Many artists over the years have explored this uniquely affecting mix: D’Alexandre Stellio, Jean-Claude Montredon, Al Lirvat, Acques Coursil and Mario Caning. But one of the best exemplars of this fusing of American jazz and the Antillean musical tradition was pianist and composer Marius Cultier. Marius Cultier was born in 1942 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. A precocious talent for an early age, at nine he conducted with the L'Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Fançaise, the French national public broadcasting organisation. As a young man, Cultier hosted a radio show, ‘Punch en Musique,’ which proved a hit with the public and his name and reputation slowly built. Tragedy struck him at 14 when he was orphaned and he was looked after by this elder sister. As tragic as 1956 proved for Cultier, it was to be a watershed year for another reason - it was the year he discovered jazz. It wasn’t long before he was fusing the musical styles and language of the West Indies with jazz and he began live performances at the Hôtel l’Impératrice.Very quickly Cultier became an in-demand concert attraction in Martinique and venue owners soon began to book him across the island. His reputation grew and before long he was also performing across the Caribbean. As his stature grew, he began to receive accolades and prizes, including the International Piano Conquest prize in Puerto Rico for his performance of "Round Midnight”.He went to Canada in 1966 - initially for a few weeks - where he stayed for several years. Whilst there he met and played with established jazz artists before continuing his journey in the United States, and then Europe, where he played in Paris at the Palais des Congrès at the invitation of the then President, Valérie Giscard D’Estaing, before returning to Martinique in 1973.This release is pressed on heavyweight vinyl. The cover is presented on original glued prints on thick cardboard in a PVC outer sleeve.

Tafi Allstars is a collaborative recording project between Optimo Music artists Thomas Lea Clarke (MR TC) and Conal Blake (Whilst) and members of the Tafi Cultural Institute of Tafi Atome, Ghana. After having previously visited Tafi Atome to take part in the Music of the Volta Region Study tours that are organised by TCI in collaboration with Green Door Studio, Clarke and Blake secured funding from Creative Scotland to travel back to Tafi in November 2016 to record a mini-album of tracks that blend the rhythms and melodies of traditional Borborbor and Agbadza drumming forms and Ewe songwriting with electronic instrumentation and dub recording techniques.Clarke and Blake travelled to Tafi with a basic recording set up of laptop, microphone and soundcard, a drum machine and a synthesizer and the six tracks on the record came to fruition through various ways of working.'Gormedzedze' (The Beginning) in which Michael 'Chilly' Dzandu recites, in Ewe, the story of how the relationship between Green Door and TCI began, was built from the skeleton of an instrumental idea that had been prepared in Glasgow. 'Deka WorWor' (Togetherness) and 'Agbe Me Nya Wo' (History of Life) were built up from songs composed by vocalists Regina Egbeako and Regina Anyormi. 'Cantata' is a traditional slow form of Agbadza drumming that Clarke and Blake simply overdubbed with various electronic sounds and more vocals from Chilly. Finally the title track 'Outside Rhythm' is a straight percussion jam performed by Agblor Jerry Philip outside of the new 'Ghanaian Door' recording studio that is being built for the community of Tafi Atome through the help of projects like this and the 'Youth Stand Up!' album which was released on Autonomous Africa in 2015. After returning from Tafi, all the tracks were finalised and mixed at the Green Door Studio in Glasgow with the help of Stuart Evans and Emily Maclaren. The resulting mini LP ‘Outside Rhythm’ will be released on Autonomous Africa on the 22nd of September with all the proceeds from the sale of this record going back to Tafi to fund the completion of the Ghanaian Door Studio.

Limited to 400 copies.Right after La Polizia Incrimina, La Legge Assolve (High Crime), the magic duo of Italian poliziotteshi conceive yet another highlight of the genre - the groovy, melancholic score of Milano Trema: La Polizia Vule Giustizia (The Violent Professionals, 1973), which perfectly sets the tone of metropolitan violence presented on the screen. A dramatic sound, which preludes the acid-prog and gloomy music created for Il Grande Racket (The Big Racket) just three years later, with lots of flutes, clavinet, frenzied percussions, deep basslines and experimental effects. The result is a disturbing atmosphere of suspence, always on the verge of exploding in deep piano notes that highlight the most violent moments of the film. With the main theme “Blue Song”, repeated several times with endless instrumental variations, the De Angelis brothers set a dark-romantic atmosphere which becomes a manifesto of disenchantment and the perfect accompaniment for the detective story.Four Flies Records, in collaboration with Bloodbuster Edizioni, is proud to present the complete soundtrack for the first time on vinyl (only the two songs of the movie were published before on a 7''-inch by RCA), featuring exclusive liner notes by the film's director, Sergio Martino.

The project, born from the initial effort of Andrea Fabrizii, who has far and wide been exploring Umiliani's soundtracks before anyone else, led Four Fliesresearch to seek for new unreleased recordings at the Maestro's archive.A challenge that Pierpaolo De Sanctis from Four Flies Records accepted without hesitation – with the help of the Umiliani family. Hip Hop meets Dub Reggae, with a catchy vocal loop throughout, equipped with a healthy dollop of dub sirens – this one is sure to grace many a soundsystem worldwide! ‘Margoze’ follows and takes the listener on a journey to West Africa where cowbells and syncopated rhythms take lead whilst the distant sound of local dialogue blends seamlessly in and out of the mix, rooting it deep in its African foundation. Side B begins with ‘Goya,’ which brings about a fusion of traditional Vietnamese folk mixed with snippets of slap bass to create a collage of worldly sounds – a technique synonymous with the acclaimed producer. The EP finishes with the title track ‘Meroe,’ where Mo Kolours once again effortlessly fuses ancient and modern sounds to create a dancefloor winner. Its up-tempo rhythm keeps heads nodding with it’s low pulsing bass line rumbling beneath, whilst tribal chants bring euphoric moments to the mix leaving the listener feeling positively uplifted. In conclusion it’s a mini EP that packs a big punch! And most importantly it sees the return of a heralded music maker. This release is limited to 300 copies so don’t sleep!

Originally released as a 78rpm 10'' shellac in 1950, this now-legendary Chicago blues A-side changed the course of Western Music. This one song's influence has been felt all over the world, not to mention its place as the early, primary inspiration for Mick Jagger and company to launch as The Rolling Stones. Anything that made the Stones engage an entire generation of young people can ultimately be traced back to Muddy Waters and this song is ground zero for the rock-n-roll that blew everyone's minds. Walkin' Blues, the B-side, is a standard 12-bar blues song that kicks off with 4 high-pitched staccato strums of the guitar and riffs on the everyday struggle of getting yourself to walk out the door one more time in the morning. This one's straightforward, stirring and maybe even more relatable in the 21st century.

Originally recorded as the sequel to Muddy Waters' and Willie Dixon's 1954 hit Hootchie Cootchie Man and simultaneously as the response to Bo Diddley's 1955 groover I'm A Man, the A-side Manish Boy itself has since become a blues standard, covered by anyone from Erykah Badu to The Band. This song is a staple in the Chicago blues subgenre and also served as a particularly important inspiration for loads of young British musicians, leading up to what would become the British Invasion of the 1960s.Notably, this is the only recording not featuring frequent collaborator Little Walter on harmonica (but was one of the few recordings with Junior Wells) during what was arguably Waters' most fruitful creative period for single blues hits. The swelling, adoring screams of women during the chorus makes this the ideal version. The B-side Young Fashioned Ways was written by friend and bandmate Willie Dixon and is another essential collaboration between the two pillars of the Chicago blues scene. Great title too!

Lion—and the mean ecstasy of “You’ve Got A Woman,” the B-side to their sole release— comprise a rare burst of psychedelic-Western soul from two names best known for Dutch progressive rock and new wave. Drummer Peter de Leeuwe, departing from the symphonic leanings of Dutch prog-fixtures Ekseption, penned it in 1975, layering syncopated explosions of hand-claps, vibraslap and slick drumwork with neutron-star density, with super-producer Hans van Hemert nearly bursting Glenn Robles’ vocals through the fore. The “Shoes Subtle Edit” provides exactly that, gently teasing the organ- and requintohinted contours of the track to better suit the treasure within. Chicago-based septet Whitney have brought some attention to “You’ve Got A Woman” with a recent cover, and the faith with which they recreate much of the original instrumentation proves the extent of Lion’s accomplishment.

Beloved DJ, compiler and incurable vinyl junkie, Kev Beadle returns to BBE with a 3rd volume of his much lauded ‘Private Collection’ album series. Taking in a wide range of obscure jazz with a distinct nod to the dance-floor, the first two ‘Private Collections’ are already considered classics by the jazz-dance community. Once again presenting a wealth of ultra-rare sounds previously only available to record collectors with very deep pockets, Vol.3 sees Kev inviting us to travel even deeper into the vinyl vaults.Quite a lot has happened in the 3 years since ‘Private Collection Vol.2’ was released, not least Kev’s announcement last year that he was hanging up his headphones. We hope, selfishly, that his retirement won’t last, but either way, the news has given this compilation some added significance for us. A founder of London’s legendary Dingwalls and former Wag club resident, Kev has been at the very centre of the UK’s jazz-dance scene for decades, locked in (friendly) competition with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Bob Jones and many others on a never-ending quest for that perfect track. As you might expect, ‘Private Collection Vol.3’ contains its fair share of frenetic, syncopated musical workouts to test the stamina of even the most dedicated dancers, but the album also provides some moments of calm, some smooth Latin grooves like Louis Hayes version of the Freddie Hubbard classic ‘Little Sunflower’ as well as very rare, sought after recordings by Belair, Lee Willhite and the Webster Lewis that have changed hands for big money in recent times.Whether you are a record collector or a jazz club regular, this compilation represents a chance to finally own more than a few ‘holy grail’ tunes without breaking the bank and a chance to relive those special moments on the dance-floor. For the rest of us, this is simply a glorious concoction of 70s and 80s jazz, rescued from relative obscurity, painstakingly assembled and presented with a great deal of love.

An extensive search revealed nothing online including popsike/discogs/ebay except a tropical seller who'd just bought a huge caribbean collection with the record included saying he'd never seen it before either and he was keeping it…Failing to secure a copy themselves the label licensed it instead and created their own 45 edit which retains all the funk & soul of the elongated album version into a 7 inch friendly format. This superbly crafted recording features the versatile Japanese jazz/fusion keyboardist Jun Fukamachi as a veritable one-man band in a lively album that captures the essence of the original Beatles’ tunes throughout. The innovative arramngements of the artist, tailored to get the maximum benefit from a surrounding instrument array, produce one of the best technical efforts. Synthesizer effects provide special “flavor,” particularly at the close of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” on side one, and in the evocative opening of “She’s Leaving Home” on side two. Fukamachi blends a concert grand electric piano, Arp synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass drum, tambourine and other electronic instruments with results that indicate a group, not a solo, with ample display of each. Recorded ten years after the original, in 1977, this recording still sounds exciting, and an eye-catching cover with a mirror image of the famous photo shoot remains one of the most creative reworks of this 50 years old masterpiece!

Late 80s South African dance floor winners only! Selected by DJ Okapi and Antal, the compilation holds tracks by Jivaro, The Hard Workers, Ayobayo Band, S.Y.B. & many more. This is the sharp electronic music that fuelled the local Pantsula dances during the 80s and 90s . A must have for fans of Bubblegum and Kwaito music. TOP TIP!The 12 tracks selected for Pantsula! come from a very unique, very different time and place. They represent the birth of electronic dance music in South Africa, through the songs of one particular independent label from the time: Music Team. The sound represents the culmination of the bubblegum era, when South Africa’s disco artists outgrew their American influences and forged an increasingly electronic and ‘local’ pop sound.Evolving over time since long before the 80s, the distinctly South African subculture of Pantsula is more closely associated with an attitude, a style and a signature dance, rather than any specific sound. In the late 1980s and early 90s, Pantsula was also the name given to a new type of dance music taking over the streets of South Africa, influenced by earlier bubblegum and the rise of Shangaan Disco, but with a far broader appeal and a harder, purely electronic sound.

Violinist and vocalist, Sudan Archives writes, plays, and produces her own music. Drawing inspiration from Sudanese fiddlers, she is self-taught on the violin, and her unique songs also fold in elements of R&B, and experimental electronic music. Sudan Archives grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she "messed around with instruments in the house" and took up violin in the fourth grade, eventually teaching herself how to play the instrument by ear. When she discovered the violin playing style of Northeast Africa, her eyes opened to the possibilities of the instrument. "The way they played it was different from classical music. I resonated with the style, and I was like, 'Maybe I can use this style with electronic music,'" she says. This fusing of folk music and electronic production was the turning point for Sudan. "I started mixing my violin into beats,” she says, “It wasn't complicated — I'd just sing straight into the iPad." She honed her at-home style after moving to Los Angeles aged 19 to study music technology, and after a chance encounter at a Low End Theory party with Stones Throw A&R and Leaving Records owner Matthewdavid, she signed with Stones Throw. At the very start of her musical career, she's already won plaudits from the likes of the New York Times and Pitchfork, and played live at experimental festival Moogfest. Her EP Sudan Archives is an extraordinary debut statement from a singular artist. Over six tracks, Sudan Archives layers harmonies, violin figures and ethereal vocals, grounding them all with the hip-hop beats.

Tracing the musical heritage of the Caribbean, Zara McFarlane explores her interconnected vision of the diaspora. On Arise, Zara McFarlane returns to a buoyant UK jazz scene with a head-turning third album. Exploring the musical possibilities of British-Jamaican identity, it’s a cultural exchange that’s born of London’s current musical climate. Released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, it sees her working with much-feted drummer and producer Moses Boyd. Both rose through London’s Tomorrow’s Warriors programme, a finishing school for many young vanguards of the live, ascendant jazz scene springing up across the UK capital. Sharing Caribbean family heritages, it’s a product of their joint exploration of the meeting points between jazz and the rhythms of Jamaica; reggae, Kumina, calypso and nyabinghi, shaded with hints of the psychedelic.

Kalita Records are extremely proud to announce their first release, the three choice cuts from NST Cophie's 1980 private press Ivory Coast Afro-disco album 'Mon'Da Center'. After moving to Paris in 1976 and having played with other well-known bands such as N'Bamina, Osibisa, and with numerous artists including Jimmy Hyacinthe and Papa Wemba, 'Mon'Da Center' was Ernest's first solo album. Recorded at Studio Caroline in Paris's 20th sector over the space of one week, this self-funded ultra-rare album regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. Pretty much unknown except to the most hardened of diggers, 'Bian Kou', 'E Clolo' and 'Mioukouna' are guaranteed to set any dance floor alight, with hypnotic Afro-disco grooves, killer drums and angelic female vocals. We hope that you love the tracks as much as we do, and invite you to join us in celebrating the musical world of NST Cophie's, all on glorious 180 gram vinyl! Reginald Omas Mamode IV follows last year's self-titled debut album with 'Children Of Nu', set for release on 3rd November 2017. The 20 track album draws influence from the world around us, everyday life. As we witness rising poverty, global events, political and ethnic divisions - these factors prompt some of Reginald's themes and call for humanity to recognise we are all interconnected. We are all related. We're all brothers and sisters with common ancestry, common history and a common origin regardless of race, geographic location or belief systems. Love and compassion are universal feelings/practices we all should embrace and apply to all aspects of our lives, our interactions and our relationships, regardless of the kinship'. - Reginald Omas Mamode IV 'Children Of Nu' encompasses Reginald's musical and sonic influences - Afro Roots music through to jazz and soul. It draws from Africa as much as the west, an attempt to make a record that can exist in many contexts, the present, the future and past. Recorded with freedom - most tracks remain from the first take - the process of creating 'Children Of Nu' was an open ended development from a natural, intuitive, starting point. Made with minimal thought of how tracks would end up, the music was led through the creative process. Born of a moment, each track is an attempt to capture that instance, mood, feeling or subject.

Originally released as a 78rpm 10'' shellac in 1953, Muddy Waters and his guitar power through no-frills folk blues A-side on She's All Right, which would later be completely turned on its head incorporating full-on fuzzbox psychedelia on Waters' blockbuster album Electric Mud. Rhythmically, this older version's beat is an opiate, repetitive and soothing, that's gotta be played three times in a row for full effect. The B-side Sad, Sad Day would later be found on the London Muddy Waters Sessions dressed in draping psych, but this original version is a candid and teary-eyed lament complete with perfectly warbling guitar and harmonica interplay.

Another 1960s 7inch soul gem, unearthed and held up to the light courtesy of Rocafort Records. The heroine of this story is Atlanta-born Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell, schooled in the art of gospel and jazz, but banned by her mother to sing any R'n'B…. that is until Delia met the Mighty Hannibal, a powerhouse bluesy soul producer and future husband who put her up where she belonged and got her singing about stuff that her mother wouldn't have approved of.Mid-tempo stomper, 'I must be doing something right', is an irresistible sassy classic, originally the B side of the single 'If you got what it takes (they can't take what you got)' released on Maverick Records. The horns and drums tease the toe-tapping rhythm along while Delia belts out with raw fire about not being a great looker, cook or housecleaner for her man, "but when it's time for sleeping, he thinks I'm something outtasight. I must be doing something right". Cheeky in spirit, chunky in swing. Full of all the urgency and feistiness you'd expect from a repressed southern soul vocalist.Written by Delia and Hannibal, 'Fight fire with fire' boasts a similar production style but this time with a prominent electric guitar riff, emotive strings and heavenly backing vocals. Describing the cheating man who's gonna get exactly what he dishes out, Delia reads out the riot act with more punchy promise than threat.A must for all 7inch soul collectors, a thing of rare beauty.

Some records are timeless and never age - "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" by The Main Ingredient is one of those records. Originally released in 1974, "Happiness" was a record before it's time - had it been released a year later it would undoubtedly have been one of the first 12" discs - so as a result, most discerning DJs at the time chose to play the album cut. The song is actually a cover of UK Prog-Jazz band Brian Auger's Oblivion Express's version from the year before but Main Ingredient took the song to a whole new level and, 44 years later, it has become one of the most revered dance tunes of all-time. Main Ingredient were unlucky with 12" releases, which is why we're delighted to give "Evening Of Love" it's first-ever 12" release! Once again this was a 1981 album track which years later it would become a Modern Soul anthem and rightfully be regarded as one of their best records.

Sampled by T.I., Kanye, and Khaled, Barrett created a rapturous, crossover gospel classic that’s still wildly relevant.

Tenderness - A short-lived Disco project helmed by James Purdie and Skip Mahoney only released one 45 and one 12" single during their brief existence. Known for their work with Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers & Frank Hooker & Positive People and many more, this duo were undoubtedly a highly talented producer, songwriter and keyboardist combination. Originally released on RCA in 1978 'Keep On Trying' was an underground club hit. The record still packs an immense punch today, it's a mixture of tough streetwise drums and percussion and swooping dramatic strings and brass will surely hit the spot for Disco aficionados. The kind of record you can imagine causing all out pandemonium at the Garage while the scents of amyl and sweat fill your nostrils. The kind of record that would make everyone on the raised stages and podiums at the Powerhouse whoop and holler in collective joy as Frankie stylishly segues it into a punishing percussion break-down. Yep. It's THAT kind of Disco record, so rare and so coveted that even the infamous DJ Harvey put it over his knee and gave it a good editing way back when. There's been a shedload of poor imitations knocking around, dodgy Euro bootlegs etc, but this 2017 repress is from the MASTER TAPES (Yes, we can prove it) and is fully, 100% LEGIT in every way. The quintet recorded a handful of marvelous albums between 1967 and 1971 mainly under the Bobby Hutcherson name on Blue Note but they recorded one album on Chess and two for Mainstream. A New Shade of Blue recorded in Los Angeles where the quintet was based is one of their best albums and has never been reissued before except in Japan. Featuring a superb line up comprising Buster Williams on Bass and Billy Hart on Drums - the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet – the session is augmented by Bill Henderson on Piano and Fender Rhodes and Mtume on percussion. Together they create a superb soundscape featuring the quintet’s trademark sound, both spiritual and serene, with Land’s unmistakable sax playing and Bobby Hutcherson modal touch. The highlight of the album is the long hypnotic track “Mtume”, a deep, slow burner displaying the group’s fantastic interplay. For the first time ever the album will be reunited with the beautiful 8 min outtake “Dark Mood” which was briefly issued in 1974 on a Mainstream compilation. The release will also be crammed with unissued session photo taken by LA photographer Dick Sanders and will feature new liner notes by radio DJ and renowned digger Sam Barbatano (Sunday Jazz, KTRU Houston). This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.

The band recorded at Honolulu’s Broad Recording Studio, not long after Mike Lundy and Aura finished the final touches on their albums (both recently got the reissue treatment on Aloha Got Soul).Phase 7 was among the most successful disco bands in Hawaii during the mid-1970s. Originally founded by Van de Guzman and Hemingway Jasmin, the group consisted of the island’s top brass players and toured throughout the West Coast, Canada, and Hawaiian Islands.Their main gig was at the Infinity nightclub in the Sheraton Waikiki. Prior to Phase 7’s residency, the hotel had only ever hired mainland acts such as the Burgundy Express and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This 7-inch was initially released in May 2017 on black vinyl as a collaborative release between Japan’s DJ Muro and Aloha Got Soul. The Japanese edition — released on DJ Muro & DJ Nori’s Captain Vinyl label — sold out in about a week. It was limited to 500 copies. This US-pressed version is available as a limited run of 500 copies on green vinyl. “So Good To Be In Love” is an uplifting Brazilian style disco-funk tune composed by Phase 7’s Les Fernandez. “Could It Be Love” mellows things out with an original soul groover written by bandmate Sandy Pascual. Canada’s fastest moving and hardest working collective are back with one of their finest albums to date, a brand new journey into tropical, soul and jazz styles on their scorching new release, ‘Under Burning Skies’.Turbulent times call for strong voices and The Souljazz Orchestra’s new set packs a suitably heavy lyrical punch, with wry observations and an urge for progressive change. Musically, the band continue to push the limits, dusting off ‘80s vintage synthesizers and early drum machines for the first time, bringing lo fi disco, boogie and electro touches to their trademark horn arrangements and earthy analogue sound. The fruits are a-plenty and the group sound at their confident and versatile best from start to finish.Opener ‘Dog Eat Dog’ powers in with Mabinuori Idowu and Philippe Lafrenière lambasting the powerful and the corrupt over an infectious Afro-disco groove; ‘Lufunki’ takes the group right back to their B-Boy roots, bringing the Afro vibes to Beat Street and ‘Is Yeelyel’ delivers a killer rework of an obscure original by Somalian super-group Dur-Dur Band. The band go on exploring their passion for French Caribbean styles on the beautiful, lilting ‘Oublier Pour Un Jour’ and ‘Tambour À Deux Peaux’ and they take time for reflection on the potent instrumental title track and poignant closer ‘Aduna Jarul Naawo’, featuring the vocals of Élage Mbaye. The Souljazz Orchestra continue to be an unstoppable force. Nominated for a Canadian Juno award for the third time in 2016, the band regularly tear up venues worldwide through their punishing touring schedule – they have played to audiences in over two dozen countries across the globe and have shared bills along the way with heavyweights as varied as Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, and Femi Kuti. Not many bands out there have been going for 15 years with their original line-up still intact while still sounding as fresh as this. As saxophonist Ray Murray says, “Souljazz is more than just a band for us, it’s a way of life.”

Kill Emil, the Athens, Greece (by-way-of-Brazil), DJ and producer reveals a groovy double A-side single that takes the island flavor and sprinkles it on a filet of funk. And Kill Emil knows his funk – initially inspired by Gangstarr's Daily Operation, he's been prolifically chopping beats on his MPC for almost a decade, culminating in his acclaimed 2015 Cold Busted album Salvation. The single leads with "O' Jogo", a boom-bastic cut that blends a Caribbean groove with big hip hop rhythms. The vocal chants are uplifting, accompanied by rousing horn lines, agogo beats, and steady guitar chimes. Flip the 7" for the salsa-inspired "Tambo", which treats the dance floor to sing-along vocals, a punchy drum section, and bouncing Latin pianos. The heat of the summer just got more bearable … Kill Emil has dropped a tropical sensation.

First official reissue of Nigerian Boogie Disco Grail LP produced by Grotto for EMI Nigeria and originally released in 1978. Contains dance classic‘Bad city Girl’. Liner notes by Nigerian Music expert Uchenna Ikkone, include previously unpublished photos and extensive interviews by Temitope Kogbe..“Odion Iruoje was the A&R manager at EMI at the time,” Benson says, “and he auditioned us, liked he material and signed us.” Odion Iruoje of course had groomed and produced Ofege. Now he was looking to repeat the formula with other high school groups such as Tirogo, Apples and Question Mark. Grotto’s deep rock would be a welcome addition to this “schoolboy rock” series.Work on their album started immediately, with Iruoje in the producer’s chair. Adapting to the tastes of the times—as well as their own maturing musical sensibilities—Grotto started transitioning from acid rock towards sleeker, more dance floor-friendly grooves. “As I grew older I think I got a bit jazzier,” Benson says. “I also listened to Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isley Brothers, Prince and a lot of funk groups from that era.”“Hard rock was the content of the first album,” Amenechi agrees, “and funk/jazz/R&B the focus of album number two. Especially with the late Toma Mason Jr. joining as bassist.” The group’s second album, Grotto II: Wait… No Hurry (released in 1979) reflected the growing sophistication of its members’ musical outlook. Fat, funky bass grooves rubbed shoulders with jazzy flute lines; space-age synthesizer tones punctuated good, old-fashioned crunchy rock riffs.

Throughout the1980's, Mdluli was member of chart-topping groups Taboo and CJB, playingbubblegum pop to stadiums. Mdluli became an in-demand producer for influentialartists (like Sox and Sensations, among many others) and in-house producer forimportant record companies like Eric Frisch and Tusk. During the early '80s, Mdluliprojects usually featured an instrumental dance track. These hot instrumentalsbecame rather popular. Fans demanded to hear more of these backing trackswithout vocals, he says, so Mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985as Professor Rhythm. He got the name before the recordings began, from fans, andpositive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to investhimself in a full-on solo project. It was the era just before the end of apartheid andhouse music hadn't taken over yet. There wasn't instrumental electronic music yetin South Afric a. As the '80s came to a close, that was about to change. ProfessorRhythm productions mirror the evolution of dance music in South Africa. Theygrew out of the bubblegum mold - which itself stems from band's channelinginfluences like Kool & the Gang and the Commodores - into something based onmusic for the club. His early instrumental recordings First Time Around andProfessor 3 mostly distilled R&B, mbaqanga and bubblegum grooves into vocal-lesspieces for the dance floor. Musically, these were a success and commercially thealbums all went gold. There were countless bubblegum albums flooding themarketplace, with nearly disposable vocalists backed by mostly similar-soundingrhythm tracks. Most of the lyrical content was light and apolitical. But thekeyboards used formed the musical basis for what would come next. By the timeProfessor 4 and this recording Bafana Bafana - the name references South Africa'snational soccer team - were released in the mid-1990s, k waito had fully emerged.Access to instruments and freedom of expression helped its rise in influenceamong youth. According to Mdluli, "Once Mandela was released from prison andpeople felt more free to express themselves and move around town, kwaito wasbecoming the thing." Lyrically, kwaito championed the local township lingo whileadapting "international music," house music, into the local context. "InternationalMusic," as house music and early kwaito were interchangeably known, in manyways reflects the sounds coming from America. But South Africans made it theirown. Today, the largest part of the music industry is occupied by house music andits relatives.

Revival is an as-of-yet totally undiscovered electric jazz rock recording from 1977 composed by visual artist and multi instrumentalist Herbert Bodzin. It features brilliant soulful fusion with echoed Fender Rhodes, phased flute, and electric bass and guitar. Most tracks are overdubbed with synthesizers. Fellow musicians are Hans Kämper (of legendary Krautrock group Annexus Quam), Bernd Szemeitzke, Peter Johannesdotter and Bernd Schöttner. Unreleased instrumental versions taken from the rare protest album "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte".."In 2016, a friend of mine randomly told me about a "…German Placebo album" - he was referring to the Marc Moulin led Belgian jazz fusion supergroup. Of course, this was an audacious comparison and he may have only used it to gain my attention. So he continues with "well, not really - but this album certainly has some breaks". He was talking about the Niedersächsiche Schlachteplatte - an album that I had neither seen nor heard about.A few weeks later, I had a copy in my hands. Here was an LP that had been privately released in early 1977 by an artist collective as a protest action against the division and reformation of several rural districts close to Bremen. The original recording itself is an odd mixture of fusion jazz and "Platt", a northern German dialect, which is pretty hard to understand, even for most Germans. The idea for the project initially came from Mr. Gronau, a political activist and art teacher from Heiligenfeld. Assisted by Mrs. Traute Dittmann, they both provided the lyrics for the album. The musical background was written and composed entirely by Herbert Bodzin. I contacted Bodzin immediately when I heard the record. The story began.Although Herbert Bodzin, born in 1936 close to Dortmund, may be little known within jazz circles nowadays, he was a prominent figure in the local scene in his day. He played piano, saxophone and flute and had been experimenting with synthesizers since the early 1970s. From 1957 until 1964, in the golden age of European modern jazz, he was in charge of the Jazzclub Hohenlimburg, in partnership with pianist Heinz Wendel. The scene nurtured countless fabulous jam sessions with local musicians and also led to contacts with other German and European jazzmen. Klaus Doldinger was invited a few times as well as the George Maycock Quintet from Düsseldorf, some of the best of the hard bop groups in Germany at that time. Bodzin even recalls how he used to jam with Peter Herbolzheimer in the mid 1960s, while legendary trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and Dutch jazz pianist Jack van Poll inspired his playing as well. While the public interest in jazz waned with the rise of the Beatles and other beat bands, Bodzin continuously sought out new developments within the genre. The days of Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, and Jazz Rock came, bringing with them electrification and further tonal and rhythmic innovation. Meanwhile, Bodzin lived in Weye, close to Bremen - one of the districts that were about to be reformed. When it was time to perform the "Schlachteplatte”, he was ready with his Fender rhodes and his new synthesizers to provide what he called "Modern Jazz Rock", as noted on the back of the original album sleeve. The recording session with the band took place in two days in late 1976 at Boccacio, a small studio in Bremen. On the third day, Bodzin went back into the studio to record the synth backgrounds. The band consisted of Hans Kämper, former member of the legendary Krautrock band Annexus Quam, on trombone and guitar. Bernd Szemeitzke and Peter Johannesdotter, both local artists, featured on drums and percussion, while Bernd Schöttner played electric bass. Though the quintet didn't exist for very long and was initiated originally for the recording session only, a few live performances at political events took place. One of the bigger ones was "Das große Schlachtfest" on February 27th, a major event among the many actions against the division and reformation of the local districts. The record itself was released just six days earlier, on February 22nd, 1977. 500 copies of the album were pressed, recalls Mr. Bodzin. The price was 12 DM (German marks, roughly about 6 EUR). About 300 were sold to the local constituency, almost entirely within non-jazz circles. The name "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte" is a play on words. Niedersachsen is the region in question, whereas "Schlachteplatte" is a German meal with sausages and meat - the name literally translates to "slaughter dish" - a reference to how the land of Hoya was to be slaughtered.Even though the combination of jazz and spoken word was moderately popular during that time, because of it's extreme locality, and perhaps also because it was politically motivated, the album was never a huge success. The few jazz fans that were reached by this album could not relate to the artwork and prose, and many local listeners could not relate much to the progressive music. Hence, the Schlachteplatte slipped into obscurity.Nevertheless, the compositions and themes, the instrumentation with drums and percussion, electric bass, trombone, Bodzin's delayed piano, the phased flute and his overdubbed synth "string arrangements" make this album a serious hidden treasure. It is arguably one of the most unique German jazz recordings from the 1970s. It stands apart from most contemporary fusion as it retains notable touches of Bodzin’s bebop and hard bop influences, yet builds progressive and even psychedelic elements into it. The musicians provided uptempo tunes such as Landswien Hoya (Land of Hoya), deep psychedelics on Kreisteilung (Flute of Freedom), 6/8 grooves on Ik kann di seggen (Let Me Tell You This) and more.Due to the short run and its strictly local distribution the original record really never made it to the surface for jazz and rare groove collectors. Even in recent years and during the German rare groove trend in the late 90s it remained undiscovered. Unsurprisingly, the LP was not added to the Discogs.com database until late 2017. The aforementioned friend simply used it as a nice odd trade item with other vinyl collectors when original backstock copies of the album were being given away for a short time in 2013 at a local newspaper and later sold from a museum for a low price until they were gone.Unfortunately, instrumental master tapes from before the vocals were overdubbed in a later session are inevitably lost. Either thrown away from the studio or, more likely, destroyed during a fire in September 1986 when an arsonist was active in Bodzin's hometown of Weye. One night, while he was away at a birthday ball, Bodzin's house - a 250 year old historical building - became engulfed in flames. Herbert Bodzin lost almost all of his personal belongings including an array of early synthesizers and his TEAC tape reels. Luckily and most importantly, his wife and four children were safe.Because of the nonexistence of the master tapes, we carefully re-edited and re-mastered the material from a mint vinyl copy to a version whose quality surprised even us. All tracks still have a length of 4 minutes, the arrangements are intact and one surely will not miss anything. Any of the six tracks is a winner, and has something for everyone! Our approach to this album required fresh artwork and new title because of the omission of the original political speech and poetry. Even though we respect the political aspirations of the artists of the original work, and appreciate the lyrical approach of the "Platt" dialect, we hope that the new recording, "Revival", can finally reach the ears and hearts of jazz fans and fusion enthusiasts. It may not be "…a German Placebo", but Herbert Bodzin's brilliant compositions and beautiful production represents an important missing piece in German jazz history.By the way, while in contact with Herbert Bodzin - who is now 80 years old and still active as steel artist, painter and musician - we were led to a totally unreleased recording employing experimental synths from 1982 that survived the fire. This unreleased masterpiece will be entitled "Revival II" and is slated to be our next project on "The Artless Cuckoo".

Recorded for Federal but never seeing the light of day until now, both 'Rock With Me' and 'Nasty Man' are superb mid-tempo R&B stompers, with Howard in full voice channelling her best blues shouter persona before giving way to greasy sax breaks at the mid-sections. A remarkable follow-up to a timeless album that shows the band taking greater risks in songwriting and playfully experimenting with production techniques. This album is Witch's stunning swansong before the fast-changing music industry and political environment in Zambia took its toll on the group. Again rooted in American FM radio, from soft rock ballads to boogie, this album sees the group embrace their Zambian roots to a greater degree, which is reflected in the rhythms and even the title of the album. This time around Patrick Mwondela pushes his synth work and electronic production to a whole other level. Kuomboka is the unforgettable last voyage of this legendary band.
