Ahmad Jamal - The Piano Scene Of Ahmad Jamal

The Piano Scene Of Ahmad Jamal
LP | 1959 | EU | Reissue (Speakers Corner)

Release:1959 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
The early recordings made by Ahmad Jamal for the Epic label have disappeared into the annals of jazz history. His trio with bass and drums, however, was certainly a whole lot more famous in clubs, at festivals and in TV shows in the Fifties. The present LP contains twelve numbers performed by a trio composed of a guitar and bass or drums – Ray Crawford, Eddie Calhoun, Walter Perkins only being known to a handful of jazz fans – and only a few compositions of his own, most titles are favourites from musicals of the day. Ahmad Jamal reveals the influence of Art Tatum and Nat King Cole in his performance, whereby his masterly art and independent style is already recognizable. The trios are quite unique in themselves, although the hierarchy is unchangeable: Ahmad Jamal is and remains the boss; he performs the majority of the solos.A special highlight is surely the first version of "Billy Boy". And not only Miles Davis praised the pianist for his technical prowess and wealth of ideas. "Aki And Ukthay" (Brother and Sister) also offers the possibility to admire Jamal’s pianistic proficiency. What a good idea to bring out these early recordings once more for jazz lovers! Especially because the Epic label is truly underestimated in the record market. The recording quality is absolutely impeccable – a true listener’s gem.

Creative vocalist Bobby McFerrin's return to Blue Note after a nearly ten-year absence indicates a possible desire for a return to improvised jazz, and in a way distancing himself from the classical works he had become increasingly associated with. Working again with pianist Chick Corea and producer Linda Goldstein, his 2002 album, "Beyond Words", is reminiscent of the other McFerrin/Corea collaborations ("Play", "The Mozart Sessions"), but somehow these mostly improvised works lack the spark that their previous partnerships have created. Ably backed by Corea's bright piano, Omar Hakim on drums, and Richard Bona on bass, the songs feel to be all the same texture for the most part, never reaching any kind of a peak throughout the album. "Beyond Words" is a moody and dark affair, with subtle layers of McFerrin's undulating vocals weaving in and out of the musical bed, but instead of sounding earthy and natural, the album is punctuated by synthesized instruments that pull the recordings dangerously close to smooth jazz territory. Still, it is an excellently performed and cleanly produced document of both McFerrin and Corea's abilities, ideal for gentle background textures on a night in alone

Brassroots gained notoriety by playing instrumental brass band covers of popular party bangers and continued to grow through their own brand of brass band pop. Their most popular cover by far to this date is of Inner City's Good Life. This album is the band's second self release, this time through their own record label Brassroots Records. Brassroots has enjoyed steady airplay among an array of top DJs around the world including BBC Radio's Giles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, Sean Rowley on Magic and Choice FM with Calvin Francis. They're staples in sets by Mr. Scruff in the U.K. and Lefto all over Europe. In California, KCRW's Jeremey Sole, and all along the East Coast in the United States by Rich Medina. The band released a 7 track EP of cover versions in 2009. 3 tracks from that EP were re-released by Canadian label boss John Kong at Do Right! Music in 2010. Those 3 tracks Good Life, Karma Police and 7 Nation Army have since appeared in the iTunes top 100 charts well over 1,000 times in the last 3 years including number 1's in Belgium, Portugal and New Zealand.

The glorious "Café Atlantico" finds Césaria Évora venturing into more Latin American musical landscapes, as opposed to Portuguese, which dominated her previous albums. Évora draws from traditional Cuban and Brazilian music to mesmerizing effect. The album is also a tribute to her home town of Mindelo, on the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente, which was once a busy port with sailors cruising between South America, the Caribbean, and Portugal. Therefore, the music is heartbreaking and nostalgic, warm and tragic all at once. The masterful "Carnaval de Săo Vicente" is one of the most joyous, bittersweet party songs ever put on wax (and was even issued as a maxi-single with fantastic remixes). "Roma Criola" is tragic, lonely, destitute, and always interesting, making for an undiscovered masterpiece of a ballad, and her rendition of the Spanish language standard "Maria Elena" is absolutely heartbreaking. The album evokes a moody elegance rarely found in modern music, from the sweeping opener "Flôr Di Nha Esperança" to the summery "Amor Di Mundo", and the picture she paints of this café at the end of the world is a gorgeous, multi-colored, and emotion-stirring palate. This album is nothing short of world class and will be enjoyed by generations to come.

The first studio date of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee, and Jack DeJohnette, was recorded and released just a few days before the band took both the European and American festival circuits by storm. First came Europe, which was just getting the disc as the band was tearing up its stages. While the live dates are now the stuff of legend, it's easy to overlook the recordings, but to do so would be a mistake. "Dream Weaver" is a fully realized project by a band -- a real band -- in which each member has a unique part of the whole to contribute. Jarrett's unusual piano style fits musically with Lloyd's lyricism in a way that it shouldn't. Jarrett was even then an iconoclast, playing harmonic figures from the inside out and relying on counterpoint to create new spaces, not fill them in. (Just listen to "Autumn Sequence", where his solos and his backing harmonics are equally strident and inventive as Lloyd's Eastern explorations of mood and mode.) And then there's the rhythm section of McBee and DeJohnette, whose modal inventions on the intervals make the "Dream Weaver" suite an exercise in open time, allowing all players to wander around inside it and take what they want out. The set closes with a group party jam on "Sombrero Sam", with Lloyd and Jarrett trading eights on a Cuban variation on a fantasia. There were no records like this one by new groups in 1966.

“Voodoo Jazz” marks the first release of Dem Juju Poets on French Radio Krimi Records. Their sound is dedicated to raw Afro influenced dance music. David Hanke aka Renegades Of Jazz, brainchild behind Dem Juju Poets, keeps on with his distinctive Afro sound and delivers a great 45 in two different styles. As the Renegades Of Jazz journey will take a step away from Afro Funk music, Dem Juju Poets will be now the main outfit for Hanke to release more Afro driven music in the future. While “Voodoo Jazz” comes with a raw guitar riff, an up-tempo House beat and all that Jazz in a voodoo style, slight electronics and additional scat, “Watusi Fever” is a drum busy piece of magnetic downtempo Jazz goodness flavored with Hugo Kant's unmistakable flute skills.

A slight variation on the typical producer album, Show digs deep into his personal arsenal to unearth true gems and adds just the right amount of production to keep the mix moving and to highlight the best parts of each record. Thirty banging beats in all, this ain't no lazy DJ filler mix of tracks that every jock is playing. One of Esther Phillips finest '70s releases, From "A Whisper To A Scream" is the first of seven albums the singer recorded for CTI offshoot Kudu. Arranged and conducted by Pee Wee Ellis, the December 1971 session also involved principal players such as bassist Gordon Edwards, drummer Bernard Purdie, percussionist Airto, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, and saxophonists Hank Crawford and David Liebman. Setting the tone for Phillips' Kudu era, "Whisper" offers a series of spacious, yet fully arranged ballads of burning heartache, along with a handful of relatively funky numbers that do nothing to compromise her talent, dishing out loads of classy grit. It's a definite point of departure from the likes of "Esther Phillips Sings" and "And I Love Him!", her field of contemporaries closer to Al Green and Aretha Franklin than before. She grabs onto "Home Is Where The Hatred Is," Gil Scott-Heron's most harrowing rumination on drug dependency -- which, at that point, wasn't even a year old -- as if it were her very own, and it's all the more poignant given its parallels with her own life. (It’s meaning was only compounded by her death in 1984.) Though there is absolutely nothing lacking in the album's more energetic moments, it's still the ballads that shine brightest, like the alternately fragile and explosive "From A Whisper To A Scream" (Allen Toussaint) and a staggering "Baby, I'm for Real" (Marvin and Anna Gordy, made popular by the Originals) so vulnerable yet commanding that it really should've closed the album.

The Jig is a real funk band. The tight seven-piece group plays only his own work and is known for its energetic live shows. Not only in the Netherlands: the band caused some portion groove in countries like America, Germany and Brazil. For the new album “Proximo Disco”, The Jig worked for the first time with a singer Ruben Seyferth. In their basement in Amsterdam West stuffed the band's album full of hard hitting funk with a rock attitude and elements of soul, pop, jazz and afro. Consider an instrumental groove machine with a Rock'n'Roll attitude.

What can one say about legendary bassist Jorge López Ruiz that can do the man justice? He's a Composer and Director and has made music for more than 60 films, 40 Plays and 400 recitals. He was instrumental in the creation of the successful Argentinean record label TROVA, of which he was the first Director of A&R. During this period they made most of the recordings of artists like Vinicius de Moraes, Astor Piazzola, Dorival Caymmi as well as producer, arranger and director of stars like Sandro, Piero, Leonardo Favio and Sergio Denis.Doctor of Music (Compostion & Performance) from Columbia Pacific University, Doctorship of The London Institute of Applied Research and Social Sciences Director of the Laboratory of Music Electro-Acoustics as well as recipient of too numerous awards & medals to list here!In the first half of the 70's he gained Professorship of the Argentinean Institute Of Cinematography and in 1975 rose to the position of A&R Director of EMI-ODEON in Argentina. His musical accomplishments are staggering, as well playing acoustic & electric bass on many respected jazz outings he's a mean cellist and pianist. He played with a legendary quintet led by Lalo Schifrin in 1956-1957 that featured saxophonist Gato Barbieri. López Ruiz had also been Schifrin's big band bassist along with Gato. He always played with the very best in Argentinean jazz. The local scene in Argentina in the mid-70's was extremely conservative, with a majority of musicians, critics and media people dead against avant-garde jazz. Traditional and mainstream jazz seemed to be what most attracted the public; more modern jazz had only a moderate appeal. So the fact that some of the better-known modern jazzmen were ready for the challenge of free and avant-garde jazz, was almost intolerable to the rest of the musicians and the opinion makers. Then the listeners had their say and they responded positively to the challenging music this avant-garde minority was producing, much to the astonishment of everyone involved. This middle-class group of musicians, reacting in their own artistic way to the many challenges of the epoch, opened new ground for music development in Argentina. The album I present today is musical testament to those troubled times - funky brooding jazz fusion that deserves a wider audience and a re-issue. Along with Matias Pizarro on piano and the great "Pocho" Lapouble on drums we are served up a delicious non-stop asssault on our senses. Again this is a lesser-known 'sequel' volume to the more in-demand Viejas Raíce I from the preceding year but is my personal favourite from this period in López Ruiz's career. As I have done on many an occasion, accompanied by this record, kick back with a cigar & an espresso and drink in the goodness of this timeless magnum opus.(Darren Finlay)

Recorded over two days in December of 1972 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood, New Jersey home studio, vibraphonist Milt Jackson's "Sunflower" is the first -- and best -- of his three albums for Creed Taylor's CTI imprint. (And one of the finest offerings on the label.) With a core band consisting of Herbie Hancock (playing electric and acoustic piano), bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, drummer/percussionist Ralph McDonald, and guitarist Jay Berliner. A chamber orchestra exquisitely arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky adorns the session as well. Jackson's "For Someone I Love", opens the five-tune set, with Berliner playing solo flamenco guitar before the vibes, trumpet, and elements from the chamber orchestra delicately, impressionistically color the background. It gradually moves into a languid, bluesy ballad that slowly gains in both texture and dynamic until the strings trill tensely. Hubbard and Hancock engage them in solos that gently swing out the tune. The reading of Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life" is a gorgeous showcase for Jackson; his solo dominates the arrangement. Carter gets downright funky on his upright to introduce Thom Bell's "People Make The World Go Round," and Hancock follows him on Rhodes. Jackson takes the melody, striking a layered contrast as Hubbard slips around all three playing an extension of the melody with requisite taste, fluidity, and taut phrasing. Hancock gets funky to the bone in his brief solo, as the vibes soar around and through his phrases. The title track is a Hubbard composition that floats and hovers with a Latin backbeat before shifting tempos as the solos begin. The expanded harmonic palette of trumpet with the reeds, woodwinds, and strings on the melody add an exotic textural palette for his solo. Jackson's "SKJ" closes the set with an old-school, swinging hard bop blues with barely detectable embellishments by Sebesky. While "Sunflower" sometimes feels more like a group session rather than a Jackson-led one, that's part of its exquisite beauty.

This 200-gram Analogue Productions LP reissue is a magnificent-sounding recording of a historic TV event. For a rare and glorious one-hour nationwide broadcast, CBS brought together 32 leading musicians — a Who's Who of the swing era — including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins; the Chicago style players of the same era, like Henry 'Red' Allen, Vic Dickenson, and Pee Wee Russell; and younger 'modernist' musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, and Jimmy Giuffre. These players played separately with their compatriots, but also joined to combine various styles in one group, such as Red Allen's group and the group backing Billie Holiday on "Fine and Mellow".The one-hour program aired on Sunday, December 8, 1957, live from CBS Studio 58, the Town Theater at 851 Ninth Avenue in New York City. Columbia Records released this LP in 1958 that is actually a rehearsal that preceded the telecast (recorded on December 4 at Columbia's 30th Street studios), and is not its soundtrack. The recording doesn't include all of the performers on the TV show (Mulligan refused to participate because no additional payment was involved) and includes several who were not on the show. For this Analogue Productions reissue we started with the original tape and the best mastering available — Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound did a steller job, and naturally, plating at Quality Record Pressings was handled by master plating technician Gary Salstrom. Our 200-gram QRP platters serve up an utterly noiseless background that lets the superior sonics shine through.

In the Sixties, the two befriended musicians Wild Bill Davis and Johnny Hodges often met up for jam sessions, at galas with Duke Ellington, and in various studios to make recordings for several record companies. However, their live concerts in Grace’s Little Belmont in Atlantic City in 1966 were the declared highlights for critics, the public and musicians alike. This is not only proved by the masses of people who swarmed to the club, which was always jam-packed, it is also reflected in the sales figures of their recordings. On the present recording, the listener is offered a first-class programme of own compositions, Duke Ellington hits, and head arrangements. "Good Queen Bess" and "Rockville" are quite exceptional, and the other titles are hardly less enthralling. The rhythm group is hotter than hot with Lionel Hampton’s Bobby Durham on the drums, and the two grand old men of swing really let themselves go. The trombonist Lawrence Brown, musical buddy from the Duke Ellington Orchestra, grooves in the background and we can be happy (thanks to the producer Rad McCuen!) that we can still thoroughly enjoy this great disc almost 50 years later.

This will come on green splatter vinyl and is strictly limited to 350 copies!
