Ahmed Malek - Algeria's Ennio MorriconeAhmed Malek was one of the most important musicians of the Algerian scene of the 1970s. His sountrack works that were composed for various Algerian movies of the time fuse Arabic influences with jazz, psych and funk influences. Dark cineastic soundscapes meet african Jazz at times reminicent of Mulatu. Original copies of his vinyl releases have been sold for enormous amounts. For this release we combined the strongest tracks from his releases with a selection of unreleased material straight from the families archive. The vinyl edition comes with a 8 page 12” size booklet, the cd version with a 16 page booklet with lot of unseen photos, an interview with the artist from 1978 and an introduction to Algerian cinema.

Bringing together the undisputed talents of Nigerian percussionist Aleke Kanonu and soul legend from Alabama, O.C. Tolbert, this 12” created quite the buzz when it was released in New York in 1982. Shops and leading DJs were clamouring for it, but short supply saw it disappear into obscurity. The A-side, ‘Happiness’ is an uptown style Gospel ballad where Tolbert’s gravelly, soulful voice channels years of hurt an pain. The B-side, ‘Nwanne, Nwanne, Nwanne’, is an Afrobeat disco monster that rattles along on the back of Kananu’s awesome percussion skills. Both tracks were written and produced by Jack Taylor, a producer, songwriter and purported gangster from Harlem and released on his own label. This reissue comes courtesy of the good folk of PMG, purportedly cool guys, based in Austria. - Peter Moore

The next album forthcoming from Brainfeeder might, at first sight, appear to be something of a change in direction for the label but nothing could be further from the truth. Austin Peralta is a jazz musician. "People would always tell me about this genius jazz pianist", Flying Lotus recalls. "He's like 17 or 18 and already sounds like McCoy Tyner! I had to go and see what was up, so Dr Strangeloop introduced me, and I got to hear this amazing record." And once he'd heard it there was only one outcome. It is, after all, the Brainfeeder way. "We had to put it out."

Check out Oasis, fronted by jazz guitar maestro Avery Sharon, a key group of Israeli jazz. He was joined by bass player Yossie Menachem, drummer Ickie Levy & pianist Doodie Rosenthal (who also mixed the album). Their one album, cut live in the studio in June 1977, is a major development in the evolution of the Israeli jazz/fusion scene, encompassing original compositions as well as intriguing interpretations of Leon Russell alongside a Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke classic! The Oasis recording contains lilting textures and colourful washes of sound, with the band really letting loose, interweaving and parrying like prize fighters. The musicianship is of a very high standard and it’s a shame the group did not record more. Thankfully, we have this one artefact for fascinating period in Israeli music history that still sounds vital today. Incidentally, the Osasis album was one of only two released on the Krypton label, the other being the ‘Peace’ album by Zingale.

In the mid-seventies Nigeria, everybody loved the Black Children Sledge Funk Co. Band. Blasting out of the bustling river port of Onitsha, their infectious, feel-good grooves were the perfect antidote to the dark economic clouds gathering over the country. Nigerians, young and old, lapped it up. Every member of the band had played with The Strangers. Michael Hammedatha Moore, sang and wrote the songs. Daniel Carlos Yakubu played guitar. Jerry Freeman Nwokolo was on keyboards. And Benson Teteh played the drums. As a gimmick, everyone in the band changed their last name to Black. They didn’t need to. Their music ¬– a sunny African blend of jazz, R’n’B, rock and funk – was extraordinary enough. ‘Boogie Saturday’ is a Kool & The Gang-style celebration, guaranteed to get even the most reluctant dancer up on the floor. ‘In Search Of Yesterday’, ‘The Eye That Can’t See’ and ‘Working Together’ bring the meaning to the groove, before an instrumental provides a suitably sweaty finale. Ask any Nigerian and they’ll tell you: Vol. 3 Aviation Grand Father is a party on a platter. - Peter Moore

Among Tapscott’s protégés was a young flautist and saxophonist, Dadisi Komolafe. Born Arthur Wells, Komolafe regarded Tapscott as his mentor and became involved with the Cross Roads Art Academy, sponsored by the UGAMA (Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension) Foundation, both established by Tapscott, and a vanguard to a crucial community-centred black arts movement in Los Angeles. From the various community based musicians workshops and educational exchange opportunities, Komolafe had the good fortune to record with members of Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, a collective of similarly minded souls founded in 1961 that over the years hosted such names as Arthur Blythe, David Murray and Jimmy Woods. From the late 70s to the mid-80s, Komolafe appeared on many of the key albums that appeared on the Nimbus West label, a label ostensibly started to promote recordings by Tapscott: the Creative Arts Ensemble’s ‘One Step Out’, Nate Morgan’s ‘Journey to Nigritia’ and Tapscott’s own ‘The Call’. As impressive as his contributions to these amazing albums are, it’s Komolafe’s own solo effort, ‘Hassan’s Walk’, recorded in 1983, that sets him out as a true talent, albeit a criminally under-recorded one.

Emma Ogosi has worn a lot of different hats in his career: former air force officer, guitarist with Benin-based Pogo Limited, and husband and manager of Nigerian reggae superstar, Evi-Edna Ogholi. In 1981, he donned a sequined cowboy hat and released Nobody Knows. Nobody Knows is arguably the Nigeria’s best – and perhaps only – Disco Country album. Country music has always been influential in the country and Ogosi managed to channel Jim Reeves via the bright lights of Lagos’ burgeoning disco scene to produce an album of sparkling mournfulness. The album starts brightly with ‘You And I’ and ends with ‘Orindo,’ a horn-driven dance floor filler. ‘Nobody Knows’ and ‘A Lonely Child’ venture into ‘you done me wrong’ territory. And you can imagine Kenny Rogers covering ‘Give A Little’, albeit wearing flares and platforms and a moustache instead of a beard. Overall, though, Nobody Knows is as disco as the sharp suit and gull-wing collar Emma is wearing on the cover. But don’t be fooled – there are rhinestones on that there glitter ball. - Peter Moore

Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations in. Pacific (1978) is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970’s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of, so called, “vaporware” music.

For the new album “Proximo Disco”, The Jig worked for the first time with a singer Ruben Seyferth. In their basement in Amsterdam West stuffed the band's album full of hard hitting funk with a rock attitude and elements of soul, pop, jazz and afro. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound. Repress on black vinyl in regular sleeve.

The eastern Nigerian city of Calabar in Cross River State was colloquially known as Canaan City – a place of lush landscapes, alluring women and delicious cooking. When the Biafra War ended it became a land of milk and honey for bands as well, with jumping venues like the Taj Mahal and Luna Nite Club and a label called Clover, set up local entrepreneur Ben Okonkwo, releasing albums by bands like The Doves, The Visitors, Aktion and The Apostles. The youngest band on the Clover roster was Mansion, a teenage highlife group, led by singer and bassist John ‘Holy Mountain’ Ebiong. Okonkwo decked them out in flares, repackaged them as a funk band and put them in the studio with EMI super-producer, Kayode Salami. The result was Devil Woman, an astoundingly assured funk/rock album. The title track revels in a ‘60s psychedelic vibe. ‘The Love Song’ is a direct appeal to teenage hearts. ‘Heaven Here On Earth’ has an irresistible shuffling groove while ‘You Can’t Stop Us’ is what James Brown would have sounded like if he’d been born in the Cross River State. Devil Woman is an album designed to set young hearts aflutter and draw approving nods from seasoned musicians. It succeeds in both. - Peter Moore

Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor are the Jagger and Richards of Nigerian Highlife. Drawn together by a mutual love of the genre – and an equally intense desire to stop it becoming moribund and bereft of ideas – Ghana’s two most progressive musicians added a western twist to this traditional form of African music and gave it relevance again. It was by no means a continuous process. Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor first came together in 1966. Over the decades they’d venture off to play in different bands and even different countries. Periodically they’d get back together and implement the new ideas and skills they’d developed. In 1980, they met up in London and recorded Sweeter Than Honey, Calypso Mahuno. Composed and arranged by Taylor, burnished by Pat Thomas’s honeyed vocals, the album is a mix of highlife, calypso, funk, jazz, soul and pop. From the title track to ‘Ma Huno’, the album’s undisputed highlight, the ambition – and musicianship – is breathtaking. Sweeter Than Honey, Calypso Mahuno is arguably the purest example of this extraordinary musical partnership. And what Highlife, unshackled, can be. - Peter Moore

This 1962 recording is one of the prize items of the free-jazz movement as it flowered in California. It teams flutist Prince Lasha and alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons, who cowrote all the songs and play with an esprit de duo that reflects their long-term partnership. Lasha, who also played saxophone, was a childhood friend of Ornette Coleman and became part of his circle in Los Angeles. Simmons, a Louisiana native who grew up in Oakland, came under Coleman’s influence while honing his own terse, lyrically heated style. Though the overall sound of The Cry! very much proceeds from Ornette’s harmolodic “new thing” (while absorbing earlier styles ranging from Ellington ‘exotica’ to Waller ‘erotica’) it’s a racier vehicle that takes hairier turns. Propelled by the clean and steady dual basses of Gary Peacock and Mark Proctor (on three tracks, Peacock goes it alone), Lasha and Simmons harmonize with as much zip and warmth as they put into their solos. There was a time in the 1970s when the best band in the Nigeria was actually from Cameroon. Rock Town Express, formed out of the ashes of Wrinkar Experience by Yaoundé boys Edjo'o Jacques Racine and Ginger Forcha, hit it hard, hit it loud and hit it funky. Racine and Forcha had been recruited from Cameroon by Dan Ian and after only six months, left them stranded in Nigeria's troubled east. Their first album as Rock Town Express was released on Ginger Baker's ARC label in 1974. This, their second eponymous album, features a more subdued sepia toned cover but rocks even harder. The horror of the Biafran War weighs heavily on Rock Town Express. The guitars wail, the horns parp and the synths swirls in a maelstrom of pain and anger. 'Peaceful Solution' implores people to live in peace and harmony. 'Spaceville Rape' bemoans the wanton destruction that comes with war. And 'Nobody's Man' is the defiant cry of an ex-soldier determined to make his own way in the world. Rock Town Express is an angry and dark transmission from Nigeria's east that the war may have been over, but the scars were still yet to heal. - Peter Moore

The main idea was to create an album which incorporates the rough energy of 'Machine Gun' based on improvisation, the electricity of 16-17 and the application of experimental recording techniques which give the album its own, very special feeling. 'Sprawl' marked the beginning of Trost's cooperation with Peter Brötzmann, in 1997, after they organised an Alboth! show with Michael Wertmüller. Stanton Moore’s busy all the time. Besides his solo projects, he’s the drummer of Galactic and he still finds time to record and travel as a trio with David “Tork” Torkanowsky (keys) and James Singleton (bass). The trio had a new record ready, they thought. But then, “a couple of days before we were supposed to start recording,” says Moore, “Allen Toussaint passed.”Toussaint’s sudden death on November 10, 2015 shocked the city. The polymath New Orleans producer, songwrite and all-around figure of elegance had been a vital, active presence in New Orleans since the 1950's. So when Toussaint was suddenly gone, the three musicians immediately shelved their planned album and went into creative hyperdrive, beginning to work up pieces of Toussaint's vast repertoire. It was a bittersweet project for all concerned, celebrating the memory of someone whose living presence was so important. “I didn’t get to work with Allen as often as I’d have liked to,” Moore says, “but I did get to.” Their friendship went back twenty years. This record features a who's who of the funk and New Orleans music scenes, including Cyril Neville, Trombone Shorty, Nicholas Payton, Skerik, Donald Harrison Jr. , Jolynda Kiki Chapman, Maceo Parker and Wendell Pierce.

Highlights stamp, swoon and swing from every track: the doo-wop slides of The Sapphires, the smoky drama of The Salvadors and archetypal Northern Soul floor-stompers such as "Our Love Is Getting Stronger". The first instalment in our new ‘Mr Bongo Record Club’ compilation series – aselection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities, whichform the basis of our DJ sets and our radio show of the same name. Includingcuts by Claudia, Cortex, Dave Pike Set, Fruko, Neno Exporta Som, ConnieLaverne, Barbosa and more. The original concept for ‘Mr Bongo Record Club’ was a radio show that allowedus to air our treasured record collections, recorded and broadcast once amonth. We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we couldplay latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being thatit had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ’d across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn’talways been easy. Recently DJ’s such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record,Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J andYoung Marco – to name a few – have opened things up with very diverse sets toyounger audiences; Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond. We’re seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude oflegendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latinback to back. At the same time it isn't a nostalgic or retro movement, peoplehave a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant andexciting time – we are proud to be a part of it.

The least known name - but arguably one of the best bands - onBen Ononkwo's Clover Sound label was The Visitors. For a short, sweet time between 1975 and 1978, The Visitors created the mostrighteous sounds in the east of Nigeria. We're talking deepAfro-funk with generous dollops of rock psych fuzz synthmadness. 'My Good Friends', the second album, finds the groupat the height of its powers. The musicianship throughout thealbum is extraordinary.

1957 was a year when jazz music faced another renewal from the already traditional bebop style towards more progressive territories with mystical melodies and more playful structures. Free jazz was already in sight but nobody could name it yet. The post bop movement and modal jazz came up and somewhere in between lies this record by cult saxophonist Yusef Lateef who had already released quite a few records by the time „Jazz mood“ came to birth. Some more adventurous and mystical melodies go hand in hand with relaxed and groovy classic bebop excursions from the schoolbook of modern jazz after 1950. But there is a certain dynamic coming with the music. Something that shows you the hunger for progression and the craving for new ground to explore. So you will find well familiar melodylines here played by a saxophone that is always close to break out of the standards. And the interplay of all instruments is just fantastic, right on the spot, tight and still free in certain moments. Yusef Lateef and his band paint pictures and tear your mind open to blow magic into your soul. There are passages here and there that go beyond the standard phrases and deprive you of your breath due to the passionate and lusty performance. All in all „Jazz mood“ is a melodic album and creates a dim and thought provoking atmosphere. Another killer true jazz album from the 1950s before the great freakout began, still easy to consume for mainstream listeners but also inspiring enough for the hipsters.
