Release:1971 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Awareness is Buddy Terry’s first album for Mainstream Records out of the three he recorded for Bob Shad’s label. This is pure undiluted spiritual jazz both deep and funky. Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, “Electric Soul” in 1967 and “Natural Soul” in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this album, an undisputed buried treasure Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue. 1971 saw him picked up by the ever active Bob Shad who had just decided to produce a new crop of young jazzmen in tune with the sonic revolution of the time with John coltrane’s Eastern influences and Miles Davis’ experiments drawned from the music Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Awareness is a pure result of this incredible blend which saw labels like Black Jazz or Strata East transform jazz into a hip and cool genre adorned by the Woodstock generation. Featuring a glittering line up composed of Strata East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano and Rhodes, Cecil Bridgewater on Trumpet, Buster Williams and Victor Gaskin on bass, Roland Prince on guitar, Mickey Roker on drums and a young Mtume on percussion. Together they play a superb mix of deep and funky jazz in the best tradition of the genre. Both hypnotic (Kamili) and funky (check Cowell signature tune Abscretions), the album is a pure delight graced by Shad’s tight production values. It will ravish all lovers of early 70s spiritual jazz. Buddy Terry recorded another two great albums for Mainstream and played on Art Blakey superb Child’s Dance from 1972 gracing the record with his wonderful soprano sax playing. A great player worth (re)discovering. This release will be augmented by never-seen session photos by Raymond Ross as two CD bonuses in the form of two single versions of “Babylon” and “Stealin’ Gold” well as new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation/Superfly).This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.

Recorded in 1971, this beautiful Harold Land record produced by Bob Shad, is nothing but a Harold Land – Bobby Hutcherson Quintet album in disguise. The quintet recorded a handful of marvelous albums between 1967 and 1971 mainly under the Bobby Hutcherson name on Blue Note but they recorded one album on Chess and two for Mainstream. A New Shade of Blue recorded in Los Angeles where the quintet was based is one of their best albums and has never been reissued before except in Japan. Featuring a superb line up comprising Buster Williams on Bass and Billy Hart on Drums - the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet – the session is augmented by Bill Henderson on Piano and Fender Rhodes and Mtume on percussion. Together they create a superb soundscape featuring the quintet’s trademark sound, both spiritual and serene, with Land’s unmistakable sax playing and Bobby Hutcherson modal touch. The highlight of the album is the long hypnotic track “Mtume”, a deep, slow burner displaying the group’s fantastic interplay. For the first time ever the album will be reunited with the beautiful 8 min outtake “Dark Mood” which was briefly issued in 1974 on a Mainstream compilation. The release will also be crammed with unissued session photo taken by LA photographer Dick Sanders and will feature new liner notes by radio DJ and renowned digger Sam Barbatano (Sunday Jazz, KTRU Houston). This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.

Limited to 250 copies.Righteous funk from the Smoke & Smile Band – really sounding great on "Africa" – a cut that almost feels like it was pulled from some Roy Ayers sessions of the late 70s! The tune's upbeat, has great keyboards, and this chunky funky groove that's as righteous as the lyrics! "Black High" is great too – a wicked bit of 70s-styled jazz funk, with a nicely edgey set of horn solos in the middle! When's the full album? We can't wait!

Limited to 250 copies.A sweet onomatopoeic groove from Iron Souls – a funky instrumental that really seems to have the riffing guitar making the "shibba shabba" sound of the title – while also getting nicely fuzzy and distorted, as funky drums keep a razor-sharp energy at the core! The guitar's equally distorted on "Jungle" – and the drums are maybe a bit too – almost as if they've been played tight and funky, but spun backwards – although maybe that's just our ears!

A glance at the discs, which rocked through the charts under the simple name of “Isley Brothers” will give you an idea of how a »long-lasting and self-generative family enterprise« (The Times) became a true soul factory. After a brisk start with popular rock’n’roll music, similar to that which a large number of black vocal groups turned out in the Fifties, followed a long march from one record company to another – all of whom were hard pushed to equate the dynamic musicality of these brothers with the 'own sound' of their productions. After hopping from one record label to the next, and not even getting a long-lasting break with the potent Motown label Tamla, golden days arrived when they set up their own label – T-Neck.Amidst the turmoil created by strong competition from superb studio albums, the Isleys landed a smash hit in 1975 with "The Heat Is On", an album which achieved double platinum status with its collection of perfectly written numbers. Powerful, funky volleys ("Fight The Power"), gyrating riffs as a launch pad for harmonious vocals and a creative solo ("The Heat Is On") go their own way, which is also apparent in the bell-like, airy ballads that swing along tastefully – quite without the sugar-sweet strings so popular at that time. This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. It's 1964 and the first Berlin Jazz Festival is about to reach its absolute peak: the final concert on the night of Friday, 25th September by Miles Davis. And the European subsidiary of Columbia Records, CBS, couldn’t wait to release this legendary event on LP.The new quintet, for the first time with Wayne Shorter on the tenor sax (and not yet as composer), thrilled and roused the audience in the Philharmonie from the first minute to the very end. The classics "Miles(tones)", "So What" and "Walkin’" were performed at an astonishingly fast pace, the ballads were tender and dreamy. Such a magical atmosphere was rarely evoked at later concerts, which was probably due to the excellent acoustics of the large concert hall. The audience were also seated behind the stage, so Miles couldn't turn his back provokingly on people; sometimes he just squatted on the stage. However, this didn’t prevent him from performing his solos lyrically and tenderly, most of them finely nuanced, soft and gentle, yet audible right into the furthest corner. The rhythmic structure created by the young drummer Anthony Williams provided the necessary excitement.Miles at the top of his form, an enthusiastic audience, impressive acoustics and, to top it all, excellent recording technology and a fantastic pressing on virgin vinyl - what more does a jazz fan want? Now’s the time to dig out your credit card! This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

Louis Armstrong
Town Hall Concert Plus
LP | 1957 | UK | Reissue (Pure Pleasure)

Release:1957 / UK – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
This album is made of six numbers from the famous Town Hall concert of 1947, plus offerings from four others, which if not perhaps quite so famous are nevertheless all more than worthy of your attention. Armstrong's playing in these days was something to marvel at, and his presence a vitalising effect upon any musicians who teamed up with him. Teagarden never played or sung better than he did here ("St. James Infirmary" to note), but nor for that matter did Bigard, Vic Dickenson, Johnny Hodges, or any of the other musicians who haunt these tracks. The standard throughout is very high, but no one, however well they play, can approach the brilliance of Louis as he soars into his first chorus on "Misbehavin'" with the control and majesty of a seagull on the wing. Teagarden plays well enough on this track, but sandwiched between Louis' solo and a fantastic lead-in to his final chorus, he sounds almost dull by comparison. Save it, "Pretty Mama" is another tour de force, with Louis playing a solo that is supreme for tightness, and relaxation. The two tracks with Duke are full of interest. Hodges blows beautifully. Duke plays some pleasant piano on "Journey", and Pops comes on with a blues vocal which is quite inimitable. "Snafu", a boppish kind of tune, doesn't suit Louis quite so well, but as usual he can dig his way out of any situation with his horn. "Little Girl" and "Mahogany Hall" feature a much more basic beat and Louis plays in a style much nearer New Orleans than was usual in these days. Ory takes a splendid chorus on the second named tune, and the work of both drummers is exceptional. But everything is good and Armstrong's work so consistently brilliant and vastly entertaining, that it is a set you must not miss on any account.

Beware! What theBig Bear Revuelaid down in the studio back in the day is a boogaloo-mod-funk monster of the highest order. Here is a little story for you. We first heard about this 45 when it was offered on ebay more than ten years ago. A sound sample accompanied the listing but we missed to save it onto our computer. Many years later we managed to get a copy of this disc without remembering the songs. All we had kept in mind was that one side was a really good funk instrumental. Finally, when we put the disc onto our turntable we could not believe our ears. What was coming out of the speaker was a beast. We remember it as it was yesterday. Hopefully you experience the same thing when dropping the needle toBig Bearfor the first time. Pow!

In 1973, EMI Records Nigeria released the 45 rpm disc “Fuel for Love” b/w “Soundway,” credited to a mysterious band called Wrinkar Experience. The record was a finely-crafted gem of pop-rock and funky soul as had never before been heard coming out of the country’s nascent rock scene, and it ended up being the biggest selling Nigerian single up until that point. The success of Wrinkar Experience effectively demonstrated that was a market for homegrown pop and rock, and sent record labels scrambling to sign similar bands, kicking off the Nigerian rock revolution that is still being celebrated and discovered by new generations today. But while Wrinkar Experience launched the movement, the group itself would be short-lived: after another hit single in 1973, the band’s frontman Danie Ian split for a solo career. The remaining principal players in the group—Cameroonian musicians Ginger Forcha and Edjo’o Jacques Racine—tried to keep the Wrinkar name going before giving it up and rebranding themselves as Rock Town Express. Rock Town Express’s debut LP Funky Makossa was recorded in 1974 for ARC Records, the cutting-edge studio and label established in Lagos by English drum legend Ginger Baker. The album showcased in long format the qualities that had only been hinted at on the Wrinkar Experience singles: bright, confident pop melodies, articulate lyrics, and darkly potent funk-rock. Comb & Razor Sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of Funky Makossa, featuring the seven tracks from the original release, plus “I Am A Natural Man” and “I Don’t Want To Know,” from Wrinkar Experience’s seldom-heard third and final single.

Captivating, ethereal and majestic, Mammal Hands unleash their third album, Shadow Work: drawing on spiritual jazz, north Indian, folk and classical music to create something inimitably their own. Recorded at 80 Hertz Studios in Manchester, it is the result of 18 months of intensive touring and mammoth writing sessions. The energy from their exhilarating live performances has fed into the writing process and yet there is a quiet reflective side to this album, giving it an expanded emotional range that draws the listener deep into Mammal Hand’s sound world.

Following two successful volumes of ‘Journey Into Deep Jazz’ on BBE, proprietor of London’s ‘IF Music’ record store and walking musical encyclopedia Jean-Claude kicks off a new “Introduction To…” album series with this affectionate retrospective of sister labels Black Saint and Soul Note. Cited by some as Italy’s answer to Blue Note, Black Saint and Soul Note have together amassed a catalogue in excess of five hundred albums between 1975 and 2008. Founded by Giacomo Pellicciotti (producer of Enrico Rava’s seminal “Katcharpari” album), Black Saint scored a home run with it’s very first release: Billy Harper’s 1975 “Black Saint” LP, the follow-up to his much lauded “Capra Black” album on Strata-East. Following the blueprint laid down by iconic Italian jazz imprint Horo, Black Saint started life catching recording sessions with American artists as they passed through Italy on tour, as well as releasing Stateside recordings. For nearly three years Black Saint released a plethora of jazz albums by the great and good of the Free-Jazz movement: Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Malachi Favours and Hamiet Bluiett, to name but a few. At the same time, the label was struggling financially and a series of owners came and went in quick-fire succession. In 1978, the company was finally bought by Giovanni Bonandrini and his team, who by 1979 had launched a second label, the brilliant Soul Note. As Black Saint had done previously, the first release on the fledgling sister-label had to be another by Billy Harper. The two labels went onto enjoy much critical acclaim during the mid to late ‘80s, winning ‘The Down Beat Jazz Award’ from 1984 through to 1989. Even Sun Ra and his Arkestra got in on the act; his 1989 epic “Hours After” was released on Black Saint.A snapshot of Black Saint and Soul Note’s first ten years, this album presents only the very choicest cuts, lovingly remastered to vinyl. If you’re already a fan of these labels, you should delight in Jean-Claude’s selections, while if you’ve never come across these jazz jewels from Lombardy / Italy, this compilation will surely blow you away.

1971's Maggot Brain is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, or vision, to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are book ended by two of the heaviest tracks ("Maggot Brain" and "Wars Of Armageddon") ever committed to tape. The title track, and album opener, is nothing short of mind-blowing, Eddie Hazel's guitar is a revolution brought on by Clinton asking him to play “as if your mother just died”. An essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic camp. Blue & white starburst vinyl in a deluxe classic style gatefold sleeve.

Recently unearthed tapes from the estate of Elsie Bianchi, recorded 1968 at Chateau Fleur De Lis in Atlanta/ Georgia. Unknown repertoire of her Swiss trio, with Elsie and Siro Bianchi performing on instruments they otherwise never recorded with: hammond organ, tenor saxophone and flute - including “Now`s the Time”, “Pennies From Heaven”, “Alice In Wonderland”, “Swingin` Shepherd Blues” and even a French sung version of “Take Five”. Probably the final and last issued music of Elsie Bianchi, carefully mastered for 6-Page-Digipack-CD and limited vinyl LP, including new sleeve notes and many forgotten pictures of the trio taken during the late 1960s in USA.

Betino's Records proudly presents its third release: an EP by the very sharp collective The Big Hustle. The band founded in 2014 by bass player and composer Sébastien Levanneur, brings together 70's old school funk with the hippest actual sound with influences spanning from Steely Dan to Snarky Puppy, from Mandrill to Lettuce and from Herbie Hancock (Manchild era) to Soulive. With mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, and percussions added to it, The Big Hustle’s music has a very large variety of sound landscapes. Still, the music never loses the groove and always stays close to the funk. The A side opens with "Afrorever", a tribute to African culture and music. The guest of honor on this song is legendary Malian musician Cheick Tidiane Seck, longtime partner of Salif Keita, and collaborator of Joe Zawinul, Carlos Santana and Damon Albarn to name a few. After Cheick’s introduction, the songs jumps into a typical afrobeat vibe featuring a tight and powerful horn section, suddenly breaks into an electro funk groove and ends in a furious percussive party.Second track on the A side is "Faure is the Magic Number". It is dedicated to Thomas Faure (co-composer of the track) and François Faure (both featured on this song on tenor sax and keyboards respectively). This piece displays the band’s ability to blend jazz-funk groove with a heavy hip-hop beat. Kind of DJ Premier meets Steely Dan.The B side starts with "Afrorever (Sun's Up Mix)". Through this mix, one can acknowledge instantly Olivier Portal's touch. From the very first chords, he conveys us into his realm blending warm and melancholy keyboards with an old school deep-house rhythm pattern. The fourth track is called “1, 2, 1, 2”. It is a purely improvised moment in the studio while the band was sound checking before recording with special guest rapper Raashan Ahmad. Nicolas Gueguen had the good idea to press the R button and what you hear is basically what happened afterwards.Enjoy!

Bosq’s new 45 rpm single sees him diving deeper into funky disco, creating songs that are more musical but maintain the rawness that translates to a feeling on the dancefloor. The A-side features a collaboration between Bosq and vocalist Megan Doherty from Social Lovers which has already garnered a “tune of the month” feature and a 10/10 rating from Mixmag. Mark Usher’s funk-laden rhythm guitar attack punctuates the song while Megan’s silky smooth vocal delivery glide on top of the Bosq-crafted groove with an understated cool and sexiness that permeate the entire track. The featured vocalist on the flip of this double A-side disco burner is none other than soul-highness herself Nicole Willis, who was featured on Bosq’s previous single “Bad For Me”. Her powerful vocal style reminiscent of disco divas past along with Mark channeling his inner “Nile Rodgers” delivers yet another future dancefloor classic. Calling Medellin, Colombia home for the time being, these 2 tracks were the last songs Bosq made in his US studio. Seeking inspiration and surrounded by a new landscape literally and musically while finding new partners to collaborate with on projects such as Body Music with The Rapture’s drummer Vito Roccoforte he continues to hone his craft. Along with dropping the Tumbala EP on Soul Clap, the full-length album San Jose 51 recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela All-Stars and his various remix work for Fania, and Cultures Of Soul to name a few, Bosq’s relentless work ethic, output and openness to further develop his sound can only mean good things for Latin, Afro, Disco, Funk, and Soul aficionados alike.

A collection of the finest moments of the only two known recording sessions by the King of Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. A man whose poorly documented life and death at 27 have given rise to much legend in the last 30 years, Johnson had little or none public recognition for his work in his lifetime. Rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads to achieve success, Robert Johnson lived his whole life playing at street corners and Saturday night dances, writing the soundtrack for half a century of rock culture to come. Featuring all-time classics such as “I believe I’ll Dust My Broom” or “Kind Hearted Woman Blues”, this is mandatory for all early folk and blues aficionados!

Before Aretha hit big with her stomping southern soul sound in the late 60s, she’d already had quite a career. Beginning as a gospel singer Franklin spent the early 60s recording in a variety of styles to varying success. While her other releases were overproduced and poppy, these very early recordings with the Ray Bryant group are beautiful jazz vocal stylings in the manner of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald. Beautifully recorded with no overdubs this is fantastic early 60s jazz and her voice is as perfect a fit for this material as it is for the soul she’s famous for.

Amazing collection of Disco Music released in the 80s (1980-84) on the Nigerian label Duomo Music Ltd. and reissued here for the first time..The late 70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Mr Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young monied businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black’s “Someone to love” (DSL 001) which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, “Honey, Honey” (DSL 002) was the label’s second release and his most successful album. Also produced the labels 19th release, Bindiga’s, “No More Starvation” (DSL 019), an afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and djs and changes hands for huge sums. Its been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah´s disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time.

First official reissue of Nigerian Boogie Disco Grail LP produced by Grotto for EMI Nigeria and originally released in 1978. Contains dance classic‘Bad city Girl’. Liner notes by Nigerian Music expert Uchenna Ikkone, include previously unpublished photos and extensive interviews by Temitope Kogbe..“Odion Iruoje was the A&R manager at EMI at the time,” Benson says, “and he auditioned us, liked he material and signed us.” Odion Iruoje of course had groomed and produced Ofege. Now he was looking to repeat the formula with other high school groups such as Tirogo, Apples and Question Mark. Grotto’s deep rock would be a welcome addition to this “schoolboy rock” series.Work on their album started immediately, with Iruoje in the producer’s chair. Adapting to the tastes of the times—as well as their own maturing musical sensibilities—Grotto started transitioning from acid rock towards sleeker, more dance floor-friendly grooves. “As I grew older I think I got a bit jazzier,” Benson says. “I also listened to Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isley Brothers, Prince and a lot of funk groups from that era.”“Hard rock was the content of the first album,” Amenechi agrees, “and funk/jazz/R&B the focus of album number two. Especially with the late Toma Mason Jr. joining as bassist.” The group’s second album, Grotto II: Wait… No Hurry (released in 1979) reflected the growing sophistication of its members’ musical outlook. Fat, funky bass grooves rubbed shoulders with jazzy flute lines; space-age synthesizer tones punctuated good, old-fashioned crunchy rock riffs.

Why is the blues such an enduring strand of popular music? Eric Clapton simply called it 'a very powerful drug…I absorbed it totally, and it changed my complete outlook.' The 32 tracks in this collection are an enjoyable history lesson. With tracks such as "I Put A Spell On You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins or Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby", this compilation demonstrates why this genre, that evolved out of African-American work songs, became the foundation of virtually every mayor American music form of the 20th century.

Tanzania’s Msafiri Zawose has been one of the biggest slept-on musical forces from theregion. That’s about to change with the imminent arrival of a new album that will redefine the boundaries of gogo music. The Wagogo people are Msafiri’s traditionally nomadic tribe from the center of the Tanzania, known for their musicality and made famous by Hukwe Zawose - Msafiri’s father, who toured the world as a part of Peter Gabriel’s Real World roster in the 80s and 90s.The album has been produced in collaboration with Sam Jones from SoundThread, whoserecent works with Orlando Julius and remixes for Mugwisa International and Sarabi have been rapturously received. The tracks remain profoundly ‘gogo’ with traditional instruments and singing, but are infused with an organic electronic aesthetic. This is an afro-futurist journey that takes in dub, balearic, ambient and electronic vibrations alongside Zawose’s hypnotic playing and emotive, plaintive vocals.

For decades, if you wanted to listen to great music all you needed to do was stare at a screen! TV and film soundtracks were often the work of US legends such as Lalo Schiffrin, Oliver Nelson & Quincy Jones, and their Uk counterpartsRonnie Hazelhurst and Alan Hawkshaw, provided the soundtrack to the 60's & 70's at a time when film and TV music was unashamedly funky and featured the ensemble of choice for the jazz arranger.. the big band!A 21st century musician with comparable skills is Andy Tolman - an astounding bass player, but also highly adept at writing & arranging for a big band and who is heavily influenced by those greatest practitioners of the art. Andy met to Nick van Gelder (the original Jamiroquai drummer) and keyboard guru Carl Hudson whilst doing a run of gigs backing artists like Leon Ware and Jean Carne. Andy played Nick You What! and he asked if he could lay a drum track down and at around the same time Carl offered his services on the record also. Nick went on to drum on the entire album and produce the recordings too.At the tail end of 2011, when Freestyle Records A&R man Greg Boramans' compilation 'Sounds From The Soul Underground' was released the glorious noise of The Andy Tolman Cartel first came to public attention. The amazing track You What! had one foot in jazz-funk & the other in film & TV themes of the 60's and 70's, found champions in Jazz FM's Peter Young and BBC 6 Musics Craig Charles who both featured it on their radio shows heavily.

A truly infectious percussive rhythm track, laced with an immense bassline, vocal chops and synth rides, this one is 100% guaranteed to entice any dancefloor into a trance-like state of bugged-out body moves.

Deep Funk out of Seattle! Camelot Records, operated by Jan Kurtis Skugstad from 1964 to 1966, released an astounding number of 45s during its short time of existence. Mr. Clean & The Cleansers' "Karate" was one of them and remained their sole 45 for the label. It was co-written by Ron Buford who is best known for his own recordings on Camelot. Those of you who are familiar with his playing will certainly recognize him on the Hammond B3. As most of the 45s on Camelot they are not that easy to turn up so here you have one hell of a re-issue.

It was the year 1977 when a bunch of musicians went into a small studio somewhere in North Carolina. They called themselves Mel-O-Madnezz and what they were about to record was nothing but a monstrous 2-sider. "What You Getting High On" is what the funk fans may prefer over the flip side. But let me tell you, "Beautiful Day" with its charming intro is no less exciting! Regardless where you listen to both songs, either on a loud sound system in a club or in your living room at home, as soon as the needle hits the grooves you will have a Beautiful Day!

Athens of the North does not release new material very often, when we do it has to be up to standard and Grupo Magnetico most undeniably up to standard.Recording a sound from a certain period is notoriously difficult to pull off, Grupo Magnetico smashed that 70s boogaloo sound so much so people I played the tapes to thought it was old tapes I had dug up.

First time on vinyl.Key producer of early South African house music and kwaito Professor Rhythm isthe production moniker of South African music man Thami Mdluli. Throughout the1980's, Mdluli was member of chart-topping groups Taboo and CJB, playingbubblegum pop to stadiums. Mdluli became an in-demand producer for influentialartists (like Sox and Sensations, among many others) and in-house producer forimportant record companies like Eric Frisch and Tusk. During the early '80s, Mdluliprojects usually featured an instrumental dance track. These hot instrumentalsbecame rather popular. Fans demanded to hear more of these backing trackswithout vocals, he says, so Mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985as Professor Rhythm. He got the name before the recordings began, from fans, andpositive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to investhimself in a full-on solo project. It was the era just before the end of apartheid andhouse music hadn't taken over yet. There wasn't instrumental electronic music yetin South Afric a. As the '80s came to a close, that was about to change. ProfessorRhythm productions mirror the evolution of dance music in South Africa. Theygrew out of the bubblegum mold - which itself stems from band's channelinginfluences like Kool & the Gang and the Commodores - into something based onmusic for the club. His early instrumental recordings First Time Around andProfessor 3 mostly distilled R&B, mbaqanga and bubblegum grooves into vocal-lesspieces for the dance floor. Musically, these were a success and commercially thealbums all went gold. There were countless bubblegum albums flooding themarketplace, with nearly disposable vocalists backed by mostly similar-soundingrhythm tracks. Most of the lyrical content was light and apolitical. But thekeyboards used formed the musical basis for what would come next. By the timeProfessor 4 and this recording Bafana Bafana - the name references South Africa'snational soccer team - were released in the mid-1990s, k waito had fully emerged.Access to instruments and freedom of expression helped its rise in influenceamong youth. According to Mdluli, "Once Mandela was released from prison andpeople felt more free to express themselves and move around town, kwaito wasbecoming the thing." Lyrically, kwaito championed the local township lingo whileadapting "international music," house music, into the local context. "InternationalMusic," as house music and early kwaito were interchangeably known, in manyways reflects the sounds coming from America. But South Africans made it theirown. Today, the largest part of the music industry is occupied by house music andits relatives.

Reginald Omas Mamode IV follows last year's self-titled debut album with 'Children Of Nu', set for release on 3rd November 2017. The 20 track album draws influence from the world around us, everyday life. As we witness rising poverty, global events, political and ethnic divisions - these factors prompt some of Reginald's themes and call for humanity to recognise we are all interconnected. We are all related. We're all brothers and sisters with common ancestry, common history and a common origin regardless of race, geographic location or belief systems. Love and compassion are universal feelings/practices we all should embrace and apply to all aspects of our lives, our interactions and our relationships, regardless of the kinship'. - Reginald Omas Mamode IV 'Children Of Nu' encompasses Reginald's musical and sonic influences - Afro Roots music through to jazz and soul. It draws from Africa as much as the west, an attempt to make a record that can exist in many contexts, the present, the future and past. Recorded with freedom - most tracks remain from the first take - the process of creating 'Children Of Nu' was an open ended development from a natural, intuitive, starting point. Made with minimal thought of how tracks would end up, the music was led through the creative process. Born of a moment, each track is an attempt to capture that instance, mood, feeling or subject.

Cameroon, 1978: it’s like any good western movie. A man drifts through the plains at the furthest edge of the country in search of two former gunslingers, hoping to coax them out of retirement for one last showdown. Except this time, the weapons are guitars and the gunslingers are Jean Gabari and Messi Martin – the calm sheriff and his hot-headed deputy – who had led the band Los Camaroes to superstardom at the beginning of the decade.Los Camaroes emerged at the end of the 1960s from the town of Maroua in the northern, predominantly Islamic area of Cameroon. After changes in name, in lineup and in management, they worked their way south to the capital to make a name for themselves, in the span of only a few years they changed Cameroon’s music scene forever, leaving a trail of sold-out nightclubs and monster radio hits in their wake. Then, at the height of their popularity, they broke up.The band had been led from the beginning by Jean Gabari, whose level-headedness and evenhandedness inspired the respect and devotion of his musicians. But it was Gabari’s alchemical collaborations with guitarist Messi Martin that drove the band to its greatest heights. Martin had developed an innovation that would earn him fame throughout Cameroon as the “king of Bikutsi”, as Johnny Cosmos explains:“The primary instrument in Bikutsi is the balafon, and Messi came up with a trick that consisted of chewing small pieces of paper until they reached the right consistency and then stuck them between the strings of the guitar. This trick, which made a guitar sound like a balafon, catapulted him to stardom and turned him into the founder of Modern Bikutsi.” (Check the song “Bezimbi” to hear Messi Martin´s wizardry on a Bikutsi tune)Martin’s extraordinary talents were matched by a character of great unpredictability. He had been lured away from the band before by the promise of success and, in 1975, when Los Camaroes were at the peak of their power, he left them once again. Gabari tried to keep the band going, but his own longstanding battles with ill health eventually forced him to return to his hometown. With Gabari and Martin gone, the rest of the musicians drifted away in search of other gigs. By 1978, Los Camaroes were no more than a rapidly fading memory. But then came the resurrection. From out of nowhere, a businessman named Atangana Joseph appeared in northern Cameroon. His goal: to track down the original members of Los Camaroes and get them back together for their one final shot at immortality. The musicians reconvened at the legendary Mango Bar in the capital city of Yaoundé, the very place where, years earlier, they had established their reputation as one of Cameroon’s most fearsome live bands.Producer Nicolas Mongué and engineer Emmanuel Guyssot were called in from Douala to record what was being billed as a comeback album. There was talk of going into a studio, but Los Camaroes had always thrived on the energy of the nightclub scene, they decided instead to record it live to two-track in the Mango Bar.The six tracks on the album were performed by a mixture of new recruits and veterans from the original Camaroes lineup – including Mpouli “Dodo” Emmanuel and Boloko Michel on Guitars, Eyango Claude on Organ, the percussion duo of Ndi Bellui and Enama Leon, and vocal contributions from Sala Bekono Joseph and Ngoebang Jean Marie – but the urgent rhythms and shimmering guitars sound like a band who simply picked up where they had left off. It seemed that everyone on the record was inspired by the exhuberant reunion between Martin and Gabari, the two magicians from which Los Camaroes had been born and born againThe album, Resurrection Los Vol. 1, was completed in only a few days. There would be no Volume 2. The music that emerged during the Mango Bar sessions was the culmination of a fifteen year musical bond between Gabari and Martin, and what was supposed to be a comeback album ended up being a last testament — Gabari would die only a few years later and Martin, without his foil, would never find the same level of musical success. Even at the time, these two titans of Cameroon’s music scene seemed to realise it would be the last time they would ever work together. The resurrection of Los Camaroes was short-lived … but it produced a masterpiece. The Analog Africa Dance Edition reissue of Resurrection Los was remastered by Frank Merritt at the Carvery and comes with a wonderful poster housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring the story of the band as told by original keyboardist Mbambo “Johnny Cosmos” Simon, as well as new interviews with the production team who supervised the now legendary Mango Bar sessions. This essential slab of Cameroon’s musical history, previously unreleased outside of Africa, is available on LP for the first time since 1979.

An absolute must! US Pressing, 500 only pressed. While the landscape of popular music recordings from 1970s SouthAfrica is dominated by tightly produced nuggets of township soul and jive, there is a notable seam of Afrocentric outsiders that runs through the decade. Their roots lie in Malombo’s angular juxtaposition of guitar and percussion, an avant-garde channeling of raw African soul that announced the arrival of tribal jazz. Taking the mantle in 1974, Xoliso expanded and electrified the Malombo sound and brought it into the domain of ethnic rock. As the decade wore on, Harari translated Xoliso’s fire into an evocative performance art with less terrestrial grit but more cosmic swing to suit the tastes of the disco era. Former Harari collaborators, Oupa Segwai and Doc Mthalane later collided with bass wizard Tata Sibeko at the start of the 80s to form the core of Kabasa. Straddling two decades, Kabasa carved a niche at the intersection of Afro-rock and funky disco jive with a trio of outstanding releases during their brief trajectory from 1980 to 1982.Their debut was an evocation of ancestral spirit and a call for cultural unity wrapped in the infectious veneer of boisterous bass pops, thick power chords and dreamy Roland synthesizers. The album channeled the great musical movements of the decade that preceded it and opened the door to the bubblegum era that followed. Kabasa’s self-titled first album marks the beginning of an archival reissue series from South African label SHARP-FLAT.
