A great DJ massages your mind and stimulates your body to optimal health, providing an escape valve from life's multitude of frustrations and anxieties. California-bred DJ Randy “Hotthobo” Ellis has earned a PhD in slipping feel-good frequencies into your ears, and "Cold Showers" (his latest mix) delivers a strategy to help you get loose.Side A evokes the carefree uplift of a summer block party. With a smooth prelude of lavishly synthed-up boogie funk, throughout this stretch you'll hear bulbous bass struts, seductive lyrics, and 80’s hip-hop throwbacks. Side B delves into basement-soul drums, sumptuous smooth-jazz melodies, and sublimely lackadaisical cosmic disco torch songs, but the highlight is a louche, space-funk instrumental that comes across like Moog miniaturist Jean-Jacques Perrey meets Billy Preston's “Outa-Space”... at 16 rpm. Hotthobo mixes up the tempos here with his boogie, disco, hip-hop, and R&B selections, but he never fails to maintain a luxurious, euphoric vibe. If the riveting club-music eccentricities of Chocolate Industries' revelatory Personal Space (Electronic Soul 1974-1984) compilation floats your yacht, you'll swoon yourself silly to “Cold Showers”.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Initial listens to Inre Rymden (Swedish for “Inner Space”) reveal it to be a curious combination of slow-motion house music and salubrious New Age funk. In this case, first impressions are accurate, and they should intrigue you enough to dive deeper into the paradisiacal vistas Tommy Awards paint here. The opening track “Prometheus” introduces that feeling of sundown deliquescence that very few musicians can summon, as it locks into a laid-back groove that induces utmost serenity, buoyed by sublimely mellow guitar vibes that should make fans of Manuel Göttsching's Ashra and Phil Manzanera's solo output spring to attention. “Draget” conjures the sort of exquisite elegance and preternatural chill last heard on Roxy Music's 1982 LP Avalon — but somehow it's even more blissed out than that boudoir classic. And so it goes for most of Inre Rymden: Among the six tracks, only “Rexy” hints at tension, courtesy of a bass line that sounds like it should score a prisoner's walk to the electric chair. But that's tempered by guitar sighs of radiant melancholy, not unlike those lo ed by Popol Vuh's Daniel Fichelscher. Even when Inre Rymden gets relatively uptempo, as on “Hans Logan,” it still glides like gilded, glazed, Balearic house jams, urged on by subliminal bongos and dappled with pastel guitar shimmers far off on the horizon. “Music is love and love is our music,” runs Tommy Awards' slogan (a sentiment beautifully echoed by David Crosby on his revered 1971 album If I Could Only Remember My Name), but one could also argue that it is medicine — a balmy ear massage that spreads healing frissons to all areas of your body and mind. Tommy Awards continue their miraculous act as Scandinavians channeling the tropics with stunning audio verisimilitude. Someone should notify the Nobel Prize committee.

Nearly 50 years ago, Fela Kuti and Tony Allen opened the West's ears to the riches of Nigerian music, and today we're still unpacking vast warehouses of sonic treasures from that African nation. The fecund 70s and 80s have yielded several compilations' worth of Afrobeat, funk-rock, disco, and other club-friendly sounds, as anyone who's visited a record store or online vendor in the last decade realizes. Making sense of a wonderful fraction of this trove - and some zones hitherto unearthed - is Swedish record collector Leolyxxx. Sifting through mountains of wax procured from a Nigerian street buyer, Leolyxxx has woven an 81-minute joyride on Plastic Inners. The records spun here no doubt would severely deplete your bank account were you bold enough to purchase them, but our wily Swedish selector has gone the extra kilometer to score rarities that reveal Nigerian music's stylistic diversity and quality. The mix features with uptempo euphoria-bringers that would make Fela proud; winsome, warped disco, and extraordinary examples of spacey funk. A significant slice of Plastic Inners examines mellow, sensuous facets of Nigerian music that tend to go overlooked in the deluge of more rhythm-oriented collections, including some chiming and chugging, slow-motion highlife and mood-elevating R&B. Some of these songs might be the closest African musicians ever have come to yacht rock - but, you know, the sublime kind... more Donnie & Joe Emerson than Toto. Throughout Plastic Inners, Leolyxxx unspools a unique narrative that illuminates the golden mean between sumptuous bump-and-grind and laid-back buoyancy.
