The sophmore effort from the Violent Femmes was a departure from their highly acclaimed debut album. Hallowed Ground features more of their folk/punk hybrid that made them so unique from the start but with even more maniacal energy than they had previously displayed. Lead singer and songwriter Gordon Gano explores his love/hate relationship with religion with the same glee he did exploring the teenage/young adult drama of their debut. A under valued classic brought to you by 4 Men With Beards on 180 gram vinyl.

Jaycock und Marry Waterson, Tochter der The-Watersons-Sängerin Elaine "Lal" Watersonund von David Knight, ihren nächsten Geniestreich vor. "Death Had Quicker Wings Than Love" erscheint wiedessen Vorgänger beim Label One Little Indian als schwergewichtiges Vinyl mit Download-Code.

This is the debut album of a trio of young ladies from Georgia in the Caucasus area and their story actually sounds fantastic. Being into singing folk songs and filming one day the three girls made a recording of the love song “Apareka” and that video gained them 3.000.000 views on Youtube right away. It is folk, three ladies singing to the sound of classic Eurasian stringed instruments such as the panduri and tschonguri, long necked lutes. The all acoustic instrumentation can be considered as the soil from which the voices of the three lead singers rise with the one or another instrumental line going deeper than that of course. It might sound like a miracle that this music gained so much attention in a time of flat ass streamline plastic pop but if you take a closer listen to “With love” you will realize that it does justice to its title. The melodies sung by the girls grab you by the heart immediately and fasten in your soul right away. This is some passionate brand of Eastern, Caucasian folk and has an enchanting approach within the melodies. The girls sing with a very determined expression in their performance. The TRIO MANDILI seems to be much more than just a group of young ladies playing music. There is a kind of mystical atmosphere rising from this compilation of simple love songs coming straight from the heart. The spiritual vibe shall not be underestimated here. This music will increase the frequency of your vibrancy and literally enlighten you. The compositions themselves may be rather simple as it is the fact with most classic folk tunes from allover the centuries but the emotional depth is amazing and the performance is utterly tight. You cannot get any better. If you love folk music and would like to head a bit more east to discover something fresh and exciting, this will be what you are looking for. The vocal performances belong to the most impressive I ever experienced and I have been listening to quite a bit of music over the past decades. Grab your copy now.

I think Bert was a truly unique musician. Somehow hecould elegantly bridge differing musical and singing traditions tosing and play in a way that sounded only like Bert Jansch." - AnneBriggs

The Beach Boys come up sometimes in discussions of Animal Collective, which would seem very strange if you caught the group on the wrong record. When they get noisy and decide to experiment, they're more Bryn Jones than Brian Wilson, but both this year's exceptional Sung Tongs and the less-heard 2003 live-in-the-woods document Campfire Songs had those familiar high-pitched and intertwined harmonies. Animal Collective's relationship to the Beach Boys is unusual, though, as they don't seem particularly inspired by Wilson's compositional sense. More than anything, Animal Collective taps directly into the thing that made the Beach Boys a 20th Century American version of sacred music. It's an approach in which voices say more with music than they ever could with words, and it's why the Beach Boys transcended their dorky lyrics as easily as Animal Collective transcend unintelligibility.Key Collective member Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) conceived Young Prayer, his first widely available solo album, in response to the death of his father, in the very house where the man passed away. Though it's Panda solo, Young Prayer is easily identifiable as an Animal Collective release in the Campfire Songs and Sung Tongs mode, and other Collective members contribute here and there. I asked Lennox once if any particular Animal Collective member was the "pop guy," prone to push the band to a more tuneful and accessible direction, and he denied the existence of such a creature. Comparing Young Prayer side-by-side with the Avey Tare split EP on Leaf, however, Panda fits the profile. There are no song titles on Young Prayer, but it seems destined to be the kind of cult record, like Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. II, for which listeners will make up their own. Actually, everything about it suggests cult; it's the kind of record that will have a profound impact on a small number of people, be ridiculed by a few more, and never be heard at all by almost everybody. Young Prayer is incredibly personal and naked, but it's also unique, and it will doubtless disappear and be rediscovered periodically as years pass.Though Young Prayer is extremely accessible and consists mostly of voice, guitar, and piano, the "tunes" are hard to source. No folk or pop music I can name is structured quite like this. In an odd way, Young Prayer seems inspired by Gregorian chant, as notes seem bent in accordance to a mysterious logic recorded in some dusty scroll. The inspiration of the mass is most prevalent on Track 7, where the deep, aquatic echo seems as if it were achieved by having Lennox sing on one end of the Sistine Chapel into a microphone posted at the other. The final track, in which Lennox sings at the bottom end of his range, sounds even more like a monk channeling a biblical precept in Latin, and augmented by two overlapping piano lines inspired by classical minimalism (the Reich homage is reminiscent of the piano line from Stereolab's "Blue Milk"). It's hard to imagine a more lovely or appropriate closer. The arrangements are simple as can be, with the majority of the nine tracks (it's a perfectly short album at just under 30 minutes) consisting of acoustic guitar and voice, and the sequencing is superb. As the second track ends at an emotional peak with the word "rejoice," the minute-long guitar and piano interlude lightly carried the listener to the next, more emotionally exhausting song. And after the fourth track, which is the most evocative of Campfire Songs of anything here, with its unsteady acoustic banging and singing that seems design to disappear quietly into the night sky, a summer camp chant-and-clap canon follows to bring us back down to earth.Where Campfire Songs was filled with odd overlapping harmonies, Young Prayer finds Lennox typically using a single track for vocals, alternating between a quavering tenor and an even more unsteady falsetto. The fearlessness of his singing here, as Lennox navigates odd runs and subjects his melodies to unusual effects, is the heart of Young Prayer. He's a good singer, no question, but fortunately, he refuses to compose within his limitations. Moments such as the tail end of the first track, when he jumps up an octave to finish the phrase "how you will know me" (my best guess-- the diction makes precise lyric decoding exceedingly difficult) at a point a note above his falsetto range, lends a layer of incredible poignancy. If Brian Wilson's ultimate goal was to create a "teenage symphony to god," Panda Bear and the rest of Animal Collective realize that the liturgical part of that equation was most important. Lyrics may be hard to make out and budgets are far too low for symphonies, but the god part they have down, and those moments in life we get close to but can never quite explain inspire every note of Young Prayer. - Pitchfork rated 8,5

David Callinan is nowadays better known as a writer having published an amount of books moving from the thriller genre to children's stories and also some non-fiction essays, but in his younger days he spent many years on the road as a musician and singer-songwriter. He formed Irish folk band The Spalpteens prior to moving to what has been dubbed as "celtic swamo music" with Urban Clearway, with whom he toured with the likes of Elton John, Billy Connolly. Fairport Convention and Rod Stewart, a.o. After Urban Clearway split, Callinan joined forces with Mick Flynn in the folk-rock singer-songwriter duo Callinan-Flynn. They recorded Freedom's Lament in 1972 with Kieran O'Connor (Second Hand, Moving Finger) on drums and Romey Young on Jew's Harp. The original edition on the collectable label Mushroom is a highly sought after piece among collectors, fetching prices over the 350€ tag.First ever vinyl reissue in a strictly limited edition of only 500 copies, featuring two bonus tracks not on the original LP.

Mary Lattimore’s debut effort on Desire Path Recordings, The Withdrawing Room, brought much deserved attention to her take on the harp. Her sophomore follow-up on Thrill Jockey shows her spreading out and flourishing. Having already collaborated or shared the stage with well known acts (Thurston Moore, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile) she has truly come into her own and this contribution continues down that path—beauty seems to be found in the solitude. Colorado based artist and musician CODY YANTIS has appeared on FET Press in various incarnations (Tilth, Saguache) and his guitar scrape and skronk brings a fresh new vocabulary to the table. His approach to music is heavily inspired by natural surroundings and extended technique seems to always drive straight through to your gut, bringing the dusty West along for the ride. Recommended if you like: Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack, modern classical and minimalism. Artwork by Chris Koelle. Limited to 150 copies. Includes digital download in MP3, FLAC and more.

As the title, Robert Zimmerman Plays Bob Dylan, implies, these recordings show the young man we all now know as Dylan finding his way in NYC after bumming a ride from Madison in the early months of 1961. Featuring songs that were left off of his first two Columbia LPs, Bob Dylan and The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, as well as other assorted demos and unreleased recordings, this essential LP of early recordings perfectly captures his growth from traditional folk music interpreter into what he would become: America’s greatest living songwriter, pressed on a limited edition picture disc.

Guy Clark's debut from 1975 is one of the all time classic country singer-songwriter records. By the time of its release the Texas native had been shopping his tunes in Nashville for a few years and the songs from Old No. 1 were already well aged and often covered. Regardless, though Clark considers himself more a songwriter than a recording artist, nobody holds a candle to these performances. From the rollicking Texas swing of opener "Rita Ballou" to the finger picked heartbreak of closer "Let Him Roll" there is not a stinker to be found. Features help from Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and a young Steve Earle. Reissued on blue vinyl LP.

This is a first ever vinyl reissue. Upon first glance, one could be forgiven for wondering which is the artist and which is the title of this album. Memphis' Larry “Gimmer” Nicholson still remains a great unknown today, despite his having orbited the periphery of the city's music scene since the early ‘60s, playing with artists ranging from Furry Lewis to William Eggleston and influencing a young Chris Bell (Big Star). Fusing classical and folk music, the sound Gimmer created for Christopher Idylls was evocative and unusual, its chiming guitars recalling the music of centuries past while also, when recorded in 1968, being quite desperately ahead of its time.

The unreleased second album by an original lady from the canyon. Recorded and recanted in 1969, Greasepaint Smile is more assured than its self-titled, Tetragrammaton-issued predecessor. Weinberg’s finger-picked acoustic is layered over distant drumming, while her gravel-pit voice evokes life, love, and mortality. Fellow Torontonian Neil Young sears “Houses” with his signature fuzz-tone, casting chaos over the beautiful ballad, while J.D. Souther, Kenny Edwards, and Nils Lofgren, pick up the slack. Masterfully produced by David Briggs, Greasepaint Smile has climbed out of the canyon and is bound for every turntable east of the 405.

Sublime Frequencies presents the inaugural volume in a three volume set of contemporary field recordings by Hisham Mayet, recorded in Burkina Faso during three expeditions from 2013-2015. Volume 1 highlights the sacred and secular music of the regional balafon or xylophone revered by the Lobi people of southwestern Burkina, Faso. In Lobi culture, the balafon performance is not simply music; it is a form of speech that allows master musicians to converse intimately with the living and the dead. Volume 1 showcases two side-long tracks that are as thrilling as any Burkinabé music ever recorded. These tracks not only echo but also further some of the greatest examples of Western avant-garde music: Imagine the pulsating minimalist motifs of titans like Terry Riley or La Monte Young elaborated into a dizzying maximalism. Includes performances by Kabaré Balafon and Lobi Balafon. Comes with a full-color insert of liner notes and a map of Burkina Faso. Edition of 400.

The legacy of Jet Age, originally released in 1997, has been slowly building over the years and is now widely regarded a true Norwegian classic. Led by guitar ace Knut Schreiner (who later became Euroboy in the infamous Turbonegro), Kåre and The Cavemen burst into the mid-nineties post-grunge scene with something really different. Inspired by exotica, bargain bin easy listening records, surf movies, Dick Dale and Link Wray they represented something new and fresh. The instrumental trio however managed to totally transcend any well-dressed retro genre, with sophisticated compositions that betrayed the band members young age, hinting to the dark seriousness of post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys and high flying Wrecking Crew-sessions. Round 2 is proud to present the first ever vinyl issue of Jet Age, with remastered audio, exclusive artwork, liner-notes by the band members, and a bonus track.

Notorious for his 1970 song ‘California Hippie Murders!’ - a ghoulish, harrowing, yodelling retelling of the infamous (Charles Manson masterminded) Tate-La-Bianca slayings - Red River Dave was a genuine cowboy singing star turned tabloid balladeer. While ‘California Hippie Murders!’ might seem chilling and bizarre, within the body of ‘Red River Dave’ McEnery epic saga songs (collected here for the very first time), it makes perfect sense. The Moon landings, the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst, the Vietnam conflict, the assassination of JFK, the murder of young Emmett Till, Korean War ‘Manchurian Candidate’ brainwashing, patriotic tirades and Cold War dirges - all grist for the great Red River Dave Hillbilly song-mill.Often cut within hours or days of the event and pressed as minuscule edition private 45s: the tall, flamboyant, ’Buffalo Bill’ bearded McEnery cut a dashing figure in his gold-sprayed cowboy boots and cracking lariat - as he hawked these handcrafted cuts from the boot of his steer-horned Cadillac. Some sides presented here are so rare as to be near-mythical - you’ll hear Red River Dave wax about the death of Marilyn Monroe and the Bay of Pigs - in an eccentric and forgotten chronicle of the 20th century experience.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2017!Firebrand, songstress and wise soul, Malvina Reynolds lived a full life of activism and music. Best known as a performer on TV’s legendary ‘Sesame Street’ and as a songwriter for icons Harry Belafonte (“Turn Around”), Pete Seeger (“Little Boxes”) and The Seekers (“Morningtown Ride”) Malvina cut a slew of fine but obscure recordings from 1960 until her death in 1977.Reynolds wrote with a playful social conscience and a biting, satirical wit: slyly railing against conformity and urging care for the natural world. Nestled within her underexposed discography are many timeless and mischievous songs that appeal to both young and old alike. Less known are three rare Malvina LPs originally recorded exclusively for children. This unique anthology has been prepared in collaboration with the Reynolds estate and reissues a wealth of these charming children’s songs, many for the very first time.Reissued for the first time on LP direct from the master tapes this release features guest appearances from members of The Byrds and other '60s/'70s west coast pop alumni! The limited release includes exclusive liner notes by Alvin Lucia and unpublished original photos!

aking in a tantalisingly broad selection of percussion-led global sounds, new BBE compilation ‘The Languages Of Tambores‘ is the brainchild of rising alt-jazz star Gabriele Poso. A true multi-instrumentalist, Italian born Gabriele found a particular affinity for percussion at a young age, studying in Puerto Rico and Cuba; describing this fascination as “a real reason to live”. His first solo album ‘From The Genuine World’ was released on Osunlade’s ‘Yoruba Records’ in 2008, leading to a long-standing musical relationship between the two artists which has continued to blossom since. His latest artist album ‘Invocation’ is entirely played, sung and produced by Gabriele himself and his incredible live shows are swiftly raising his international profile one performance at a time.An artist with a strong musical and spiritual vision, Gabriele’s appreciation for the use of drumming as a means to communicate led to the concept behind ‘The Languages Of Tambores’. This expertly curated collection of music summons up the excitement Poso must have felt when he began immersing himself in the study of percussion. Ancestral, evocative and visceral, this collection of tracks spans several genres and continents, tied together with that ancient, visceral connection we all share with the magical, unspoken language of the drum.

By 1970, the folk revival had all but ended. Gone were the heady days of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and “If I Had A Hammer.” Hootenanny had been cancelled. Broadside was out, Rolling Stone in. Richard Fariña was dead, Bob Dylan had plugged in. Paths paved by Joan Baez and Judy Collins had led a younger, more introspective generation of songwriters into the woods, while the ethos forged in weather-beaten hills and tempered on the lower east side of Manhattan was being reborn in the canyons of California, as songs for seagulls crafted in Joni Mitchell’s visage. Culled from beyond the crop of critrevisionist darlings Linda Perhacs, Judee Sill, or Vashti Bunyan, Ladies From The Canyon examines the world of private folk via the works of 13 unlikely heroines who sang beneath the infrastructure of the music business, playing to coffeehouse chatter and church picnic silence. Each of these Wayfaring Strangers walk in the handmade aesthetic of lyrics scribbled into faded denim, of delicate movements captured and released.

Scottish singer-songwriter Bert Jansch recorded his first album in producer Bill Leader's London flat with a borrowed guitar, sitting on the edge of the bed and singing into a portable tape recorder. As author Richie Unterberger writes in the liner notes, "When Bert Jansch's self-titled debut LP was issued in April 1965, he was already a major figure on the British folk scene. His synthesis of traditional British folk with blues and a bit of jazz was at the vanguard of a new generation of UK folk performers, well-versed in past forms but unafraid to venture into new territory. His virtuosic guitar was complemented by a plaintive rough-hewn voice that didn't just document the on-the-road experience, but lived it." Bert Jansch contains all original material, except a shattered cover of Davy Graham's "Angie" that Jansch makes all his own. "Needle of Death," one of the first folk songs to address the consequences of heroin use, yields to a restraint uncommon for Jansch, yet beautifully encapsulates the album's tone of heartfelt conviction. Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time domestic release of Bert Jansch's debut, remastered from the original master tapes. For those interested in a unique strand of music that would become a major influence on everyone from Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Donovan, Neil Young and more – there is no better place to start than here.

Night Fiction is Cian Nugent's third album but his first taking on the role of singer-songwriter. Where his previous two albums: 2013's Born With The Caul and 2011's Doubles saw him exploring extended guitar based instrumentals with his band, The Cosmos, here he has reigned things in and focused his songwriting skills. Guitar fans, do not fear, there is still plenty of soloing and fingerpicking here. With 7 songs both solo and with his band, this album amalgamates everything Cian has done up to this point and reveals a more broad palate of influences, including The Velvet Underground, Richard Thompson, Television, Neil Young, John Lennon, Fred Neil, etc. Recorded over a week beginning on Valentine's Day 2014, Night Fiction was recorded in Bow Lane Studios in Dublin with Daniel Fox (Girl Band) and mixed by Brendan Jenkinson. The album's seven songs include solo ventures as well as full-band recordings feat. David Lacey on drums, Conor Lumsden on bass, Brendan Jenkinson on organ and piano and Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh on viola. The vibe here is familiar yet refreshing and a logical progression for Cian.

Anthology Recordings is pleased to present Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975, a collection of previously unreleased home recordings from Robert Lester Folsom. The 13 tracks in this collection capture the halcyon, wide-eyed experiments of Folsom who, after going halves in a reel-to-reel tape recorder with a friend, recorded all of this material over college summer breaks in barns, screened porches and bedrooms across Adel, Georgia. Folsom crafts a delicate form of folk-rock, with a knack for penning gorgeous ballads ("See You Later I'm Gone", "Can't See You"), spellbinding instrumental explorations ("Oblivion") and elements of dusty psychedelia (the farfisa-peppered "Written In Your Hair" and "On And On"). There are echoes of Neil Young ("Southern Man" was a favorite cover of Folsom's), Nick Drake and early Fairport Convention in Folsom's form and lyricism, that would later become more realized on his full-length Music And Dreams (1976). Perhaps just as precious as the songs revived in this collection is the youthful sense of excitement and experimentation that has been captured and preserved. Sales Points Essential

Though most of the world may not know the songs of Lynn Castle, she is an artist whose work stretches across seven decades. She has created a diverse and vast (albeit mostly unreleased) discography of pop, folk, country, gothic, rock, punk, blues, and children's songs. Light In The Attic Records is very excited to continue its Lee Hazlewood Archive Series with Rose Colored Corner, a collection of intimate recordings Lynn Castle made with Jack Nitzsche in 1966 and her complete recorded output with Lee Hazlewood on LHI Records. For the first time ever Lynn is sharing recordings from her personal archive and telling her story. In the 1960s Lynn became the first lady barber in LA just as long hair on men became hip. By day she was styling The Monkees, Boyce and Hart, Del Shannon, Sonny & Cher, the Byrds and countless others…by night she was writing songs. Despite lacking the desire to self promote and a crippling insecurity that made it hard to sing in front of anyone, her songs managed to bend the ears of such industry heavyweights as Phil Spector, Jack Nitzsche and Lee Hazlewood. “It was so hard to get me to sing,” explained Castle. “I had buried it so low, I didn’t think I was good at all. Lee heard my songs and thought I was fabulous. He said, ‘Oh my god, you’re really good! Let’s cut a record.’Her sole 1967 45 “The Lady Barber" b/w "Rose Colored Corner,” released on Lee Hazlewood Industries is a slice of psychedelic pop heaven. A full length album was never completed, but her sparse demos with Jack Nitzsche give the listener a peek of what one might have sounded like. If you are familiar with Nitzsche’s mid-60s work with Tim Buckley, Bob Lind, and Buffalo Springfield…you can squint your ears and imagine her songs bejeweled with lush strings, finger cymbals, and delicate harpsichord. Instead, the songs remained unheard until now.Just because her songs weren’t recognized at the time doesn’t diminish their magic. This music is meant to be found and heard. Though commercial success may remain elusive, sometimes strange premonitions are realized… “When I was young, making music in the ‘60s, I had this strange thought that one day I would be this old woman, and young people would come find me and tell me that my music meant something to them.” - Lynn CastleThis release got remastered from pristine original master tapes and contains 10 previously unreleased songs recorded with Jack Nietzsche. Also includes Lynn’s sole LHI 45 produced by Lee Hazlewood. The LP includes liner notes by Hunter Lea with Lynn Castle interview and unseen photos, press shots and handwritten lyric sheets. The LP is housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket.

Alpha Ousmane "Hama" Sankaré (aka Pedro) is a legend. He has anchored the bands of many great artists of Mali: Ali Farka Toure, Afel Bocoum, le Troupe Regionale de Niafunké, l'Orchestre de Gao, Songhoy Allstars, and Mamadou Kelly's BanKaiNa, and he can be heard on many of the seminal recordings of Mali's music. He is the master of contemporary calabash percussion and defined it's the playing style. He has toured the world. Hama's influence is unchallenged as composer, arranger, and instrumentalist. Unbelievably, Ballébé - Calling All Africans is the first album in his own name! A musical adventurer, Hama explores sounds and is constantly expanding his repertoire. His knowledge of tradition reaches deeply into the past as he looks into the future for inspiration. For this album, Hama sought a variety of sounds. He asked Grammy-winning guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, whom he met in Woodstock New York in 2016, to bring her distinctive slide guitars to some of the tunes. He also asked the young singer Sekou Touré to join him. Oumar Konaté brought his guitar virtuoso skills and Sekou Bah anchors the tracks on bass. Also joining in were Mahalmadane Traoré on drums and Brehima "Yoro" Cissé and Bouba Cissao on traditional stringed instruments. To explore contemporary electronic sounds, Hama asked David Harrow in Los Angeles to mix two of the songs, pushing genre boundaries. Hama looked for loops and effects in the mix to reflect his diverse influences, while always remaining centered in Niafunke desert blues, his home in the Niger River Delta of Mali. A tour de force by Malian master musician Hama Sankaré. CD version includes two extra tracks: an instrumental of "Middo Wara" and a radio edit of "Haira Alhawa".

Fred Lincoln ‘Link’ Wray, Jr. (1929-2005) born of Shawnee Native American parents was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s. Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly and instrumental rock. Building on the distorted electric guitar sound of early records, his 1958 instrumental hit “Rumble” (banned in New York and Boston for fear it would incite teenage gang violence) popularized "the power chord” which laid the foundation to modern rock music.Tiring of the corporate music machine, in the 1970s he began recording albums using a three-track studio he converted from an outbuilding on his brother’s property that his father used to raise chickens. This is where the ‘Mordicai Jones’ sessions were recorded in 1971, making it part of what we now know as the ‘Shack Trilogy’ together with the albums ‘Link Wray’ & ‘Beans And Fatback. ‘Mordicai Jones’ is made out of fantastic energetic Americana blended blues, country, gospel, soul and folk-rock. The songs on this album have a tough and heartfelt vibe that sets it apart from the more pastoral country-rock albums of the time.Link Wray leaves a legacy as big as his career: Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and in 2013 he was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Pete Townshend of The Who once said, “If it hadn’t been for Link Wray and ‘Rumble,’ I never would have picked up a guitar.” Other musicians citing him as a major influence are Iggy Pop, Neil Young & Jimmy Page (amongst others).Back on vinyl for the first time since 1972!! The LP comes with gatefold jacket, obi strip and insert with exclusive as extensive liner notes.

The mid-to-late '60s were strange days for Lee Hazlewood. Having struck gold as songwriter and vocal foil for Nancy Sinatra, he signed up to MGM as an artist in his own right, and between 1966 and 1968, produced three ambitious solo albums that were eclectic, idiosyncratic, and most of all, unpredictable. It was a happy time for Lee; his music was hot on the charts, he was fully immersed in his collaboration with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom. The second of his MGM trilogy–1967's peculiarly named Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure–took on countrified French ye-ye (“The Girls In Paris”), a tale of a young bullfighter built on Spanish guitar and choral cowboys (“Jose”), a string-drenched song about the passing of time (“The Old Man And His Guitar”), and a western epic about a Native American tribe (“The Nights”). And that was just the first four tracks. Elsewhere, the honky tonk madness of “Suzi Jane Is Back In Town,” the Byrds-like jangle of “In Our Time” and–in the bonus tracks–an instrumental named “Batman” confirm this to be one of Hazlewood's most far-ranging, far-out LPs ever. It’s the result of two main factors: ambition–to top Phil Spector, primarily–and cash, which paid for orchestras, plush studios, and the inestimable talents of arranger Billy Strange. “I think the big sound of those records came out of the Spector thing,” says Hokom, in the new liner notes. “If you can have a big sound and you have money to burn… it was a flamboyancy.” Released before the Nancy & Lee LP–a bona fide hit for Reprise Records–Hazlewoodism was a tougher nut to crack, a record that confused by combining po-faced delivery with unabashed comical touches. By 1967, Hazlewood had founded the LHI imprint, and was busy building his own empire–one we've been lovingly archiving for the past few years. We now present this missing link in the story, plus predecessor, The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood and follow-up, Something Special. Welcome to Hazlewood's magnificent–and mad–MGM years.

Odetta Hartman is a young woman keeping the spirit of Old New York alive. With a heart-stopping voice and wideranging instrumental talent, she carries cowboy soul into a new era where country can clash with computers, and bluegrass isn’t afraid of bass. With her first strictly solo record, 222 -- an experimental, bedroom-produced hybrid of folk, musique concrète and psychedelia -- Odetta Hartman and her partner, sound artist and producer Jack Inslee, have created something completely original and unsettling: badass banjos, detuned violins, superstitious stories and eerie soundscapes all give backing to beautiful vocal stylings that range from sensual to spooky. 222 presents itself as a post-modern audio novella: its 22-minute running time makes it as concise as your favorite Netflix episode, and its eclectic edge is sure to leave your head spinning by the time you’re through. In addition to writing all of the songs, Odetta sings, plays banjo, violin and guitar and incorporates samples from her own field recordings to create a truly idiosyncratic world of sound. A companion remix EP will be released in collaboration with Full Service Party, featuring unique reinterpretations of each track from some of the finest talents in the electronic music world. The 25-year old East Village native grew up around experimental filmmakers, street poets and after-hours debauchery, all thanks to her pioneering parents (founders of the local institution Two Boots Pizza) who have cultivated her passion for musical performance since the tender age of 4 years old. She currently teaches neighborhood girls age 8-18 how to produce radio and music at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. Odetta Hartman has explored traditional forms of Americana with previous projects - she was a popular performing artist in The Sparrows while at Bard College, she toured the country with songwriter-magician Gryphon Rue, has ample credits for multi-instrumental session work, and self-released two EP’s with some of the best musicians NYC has to offer.

One Nation & Spacetalk are proud to reveal their most exciting release to date: a collection of long-lost recordings from forgotten Californian duo Morrison Kincannon, rescued from the dusty tape archives of the pair’s lead songwriter, Norman Morrison. With only a handful of sought-after private press 7” singles to their name, Morrison Kincannon are all but unknown outside record collecting circles. Yet Norman Morrison and Terry Kincannon wrote and recorded some superb songs during the 1970s and early ‘80s, desperately hoping for the break that would see them released on vinyl. Now, at last, their time has finally come. Morrison and Kincannon first started working together as teenagers almost 50 years ago. Every Saturday, they would get together to jam and write songs. This led to recording sessions at a friendly studio in San Francisco and a management and publishing deal with Manny Greenhill, a man who had previously nurtured the careers of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Sadly, their hoped-for-success never came, and by the early 1980s both members had re-focused on work and family. As the years rolled by, their original multi-track recordings lay idle in Morrison’s loft, seemingly never to be released. All that changed when Morrison received an email from Spacetalk Records two years ago, asking about the possibility of reissuing “To See One Eagle Fly”, the B-side to one of their 7” singles that has long been a favourite of label co-founder Danny McLewin. Once a deal had been done, Morrison mentioned that he had hours of unissued recordings in his loft; a treasure trove of ultra-rare multi-track master tapes that could be freshly mixed and mastered for release. When the Spacetalk Records’ team finally got a chance to listen, they were astonished by the timeless quality of the songs. Put simply, they just had to be released. The resultant album is a stunning set: an intoxicating glimpse into the world of two previously unheralded master songwriters whose musical vision encapsulates all that was good about Californian music during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Rooted in the American folk revival and folk-rock movement of the late ‘60s, the album’s 15 thoughtful, heartfelt songs are laden with sly nods to the likes of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Ned Doheny, Michael Deacon, Cy Timmons, Gene Clark and Buffalo Springfield. The tracks were recorded at various times between 1970 and ’82 and gives a small glimpse of the duo’s total body of unissued work. The release comes with extensive liner notes telling the remarkable story of two lifelong friends and musical collaborators who thought their moment had passed.

There was something in the air in the urban corners of late ‘60s Japan. Student protests and a rising youth culture gave way to the angura (short for “underground) movement that thrived on subverting traditions of the post-war years. Rejection of the Beatlemania-inspired Group Sounds and the squeaky clean College Folk movements led the rise of what came to be known in Japan as “New Music,” where authenticity mattered more than replicating the sounds of their idols. Some of the most influential figures in Japanese pop music emerged from this vital period, yet very little of their work has ever been released or heard outside of Japan, until now. Light In The Attic is thrilled to present „Even a Tree Can Shed Tears“, the inaugural release in the label’s Japan Archival Series. This is the first-ever, fully licensed collection of essential Japanese folk and rock songs from the peak years of the angura movement to reach Western audiences. In mid-to-late 1960s Tokyo, young musicians and college students were drawn to Shibuya’s Dogenzaka district for the jazz and rock kissas, or cafes, that dotted its winding hilly streets. Some of these spaces doubled as performance venues, providing a stage for local regulars like Hachimitsu Pie with their The Band-like ragged Americana, Tetsuo Saito with his spacey philosophical folk, and the influential Happy End, who successfully married the unique cadences of the Japanese language to the rhythms of the American West Coast. For many years Dogenzaka remained a center of the city’s “New Music” scene.Meanwhile a different kind of music subculture was beginning to emerge in the Kansai region around Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. Far more political than their eastern counterparts, many of the Kansai-based “underground” artists began in the realm of protest folk music. They include Takashi Nishioka and his progressive folk collective Itsutsu No Akai Fuusen, the “Japanese Joni Mitchell” Sachiko Kanenobu, and The Dylan II, whose members ran The Dylan cafe in Osaka, which became a hub for the scene.„Even a Tree Can Shed Tears“ also includes the bluesy avant-garde stylings of Maki Asakawa, future Sadistic Mika Band founder Kazuhiko Kato with his fuzzy, progressive psychedelia, the beatnik acid folk of Masato Minami, and the intimate living room folk of Kenji Endo.Nearly 50 years on, this “New Music” is born anew. This release marks the irst-ever fully licensed compilation of this music to be released outside Japan. The double LP housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket with artwork by illustrator Heisuke Kitazawa including extensive liner notes.

Recorded on July 18th, 2014 as the opening set for Peter Walker's psychedelic guitar experience, William Tyler's Live at Third Man Records LP was buried for far too long in our backlog of masters. To release it too soon would have been to unleash the secrets of the transcendent and acclaimed new record Modern Country (Merge, 2016) before they had a chance to manifest. Too wait any longer would have been torture for us. Originally planned to be a live single, the full, 5-song performance was too truthy, too seamless, and too perfectly whole to be whittled down to two tracks. So, surprise! A live LP is born. For those unfamiliar with William Tyler, his story is Nashville legend... born into a songwriting family, Tyler was tapped by Kurt Wagner to become a member of Lambchop at age 19 (two decades younger than the other members), and quickly became the ''architect of the band's sound.'' From there, Tyler went on to back up the Silver Jews, Bonnie ''Prince'' Billy, Charlie Louvin, and others... all the while writing songs for his configuration of choice: fingerpicking solo guitar. The acoustic simplicity of his first two albums remains in his most recent effort (which he describes as ''a love letter to what we're losing in America. To what we've already lost''), and on this live LP, but Tyler is bringing more depth and more experimentation to his compositions of late. ''Gone Clear'' (known as ''Going Clear'' at the time of our recording) which appears on both records, is a melting pot of ideas: a drone reminiscent of Hindustani classical music, a central melody that sounds distinctly Appalachian, a devolution into a kaleidoscope of colors and ideas that it's hard to believe is being produced by a single musician. This layering of textures is Tyler's trademark, and even more awe-inspiring live.We like to think that with the purposeful lack of smart phones, bars to saddle up to, and, of course, corners, concert-goers in the Blue Room tend to be more in-the-moment than in most performance venues. But it's a rare artist who can take the already focused atmosphere in the room and quiet every last busy mind - Tyler did just that. This immortalization of the performance in all its transmundane glory will entrance you from first note.
