Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The works on Anthropological Constants straddle a fence between field recording and experimental composition. The intention of each piece is to lead the listener astray in their environment by firstly identifying cues or references, and then slowly transforming them without replacing them with other [more] cues. As one reviewer wrote, the presence of 'constantly changing soundscapes... of unfathomable origin, which act like some kind of travelogue of... your own memories', defines the intent behind these works. The original tracks that make up this LP were the first computer-based compositions (originally made between 1996 and 2001), derived from methods employed in live group performances during the late 1980s, which used the same techniques for transporting the audience from the known to the unknown; from the public to the private or the external to the internal, by capturing and feeding back the listening space via chains of controlled processing. This isn't an attempt to separate the individual from the group listening experience but to try and demonstrate a method by which the individual listener is co-opted into a group experience of a space, via the removal of any specific meanings or cues and replacing them with potentials derived from the deconstruction of memory. First the environment must be un-learned; un-mediated; detourned. To some extent, these experiments are also psychedelic, in the sense that they aim at revealing something personal to each listener, which is also ever-present in the wider human experience of the surroundings. In that respect the work aims at that silence called 'black noise'; a purely human silence beyond that normally envisaged. A silence in which you can almost hear your own brain-ear mechanism scanning for references with which to define the dimensions of the space you are occupying. This vinyl edition was cut at SST and pressed at Optimal in a numbered edition of 500 and comes with an insert and download code.

This 40th anniversary LP re-release has beenremastered from the tapes and adds a 4 page booklet with photos from thetime. Numbered edition of 500. In 1980, Adam Bohman (Morphogenesis, The Bohman Brothers) made his first recordings using two budget cassette recorders, an ordinary trumpet, and a variety of other acoustic instruments and objects, many of which are still part of the current Bohman armory. Bunhill Row was Bohman's first complete album of material, but it and subsequent releases from the time remained in tiny cassette editions made for friends or exchanged through the mail art network. On vinyl for the first time, Paradigm Discs' hand-numbered reissue opens another window into the incredibly fruitful astral alignment that occurred over London at this time.

The work here comes in 2 sections, which in their original form lasted for over an hour and first appeared in 1998 under the name 'Electronic Revolution' as a free CD with issue 1 of the French magazine 'Crash'. The CD was quickly withdrawn with maybe only 100 copies finding their way into circulation. This edition is edited down to 46 minutes and comprises the core of the original recording. It employs the now familiar techniques of random drop-ins and cut-ups of readings. The readings themselves also being cut-ups of words on the page. The first section of the tape uses further processing by means of a second tape recorder. Recorded in Duke Street, London ca. 1968, the tape was then passed on to Brion Gysin in Paris where it remained in his archive until 1998. This is the first readily available edition of an hypnotic and meditative recording that examines the hidden power of words. Closer to a work of sound poetry than anything literary. The album includes a 12"x12" insert with an essay by Ben Harper and several previously unseen portrait photos of Burroughs, taken by Harriet Crowder in her Hammersmith flat during a drug experiment.
