Founded by Juan Campos in 1977, the Horóscopo label was the major outlet for the real Peruvian chicha sound: a surreal and irresistible blend of psychedelic fuzztone guitars, infectious echo drenched vocals, electronic keyboards and tropical / Andean rhythms.During its 15 years of existence, Discos Horóscopo was the home of the biggest names of the chicha sound. From the legendary Chacalón & La Nueva Crema to Los Destellos, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegría…We present the first ever compilation dedicated to this groundbreaking Peruvian label. 11 tracks taken from rare 45s and LPs.“It was these groups that, as part of a cultural complex where Discos Horóscopo had a central role, built and developed the stage of "chicha music", filling the lives of thousands of men and women who made us of their right to joy in a changing yet greatly convulsed environment that, nevertheless, offered opportunities to build a better life in the future.” – Carlos Leyva Arroyo

“Dolores Vargas was our wildest performer, our Spanish Tina Turner, Ikettes-era. In my opinion, she was a better dancer and singer than Lola Flores but she never received the same media attention than the famous Lola. Maybe it’s better this way. Dolores Vargas is wine for sommeliers and since now, music for connoisseurs.”– Txarly BrownHere’s an anthology dedicated to the ‘70s period of Dolores Vargas, known as “The Earthquake” due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. In these songs, released 1970-1975 for the Belter label from Barcelona, you’ll hear a killer sound and production mixing Funk, Rock and Pop with the powerful vocal style of “The Earthquake”. Including real gipsy-funk bombs like “A la pelota” “Anana Hip” or “La Hawaiana” along with her bizarre cover version of “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep” and much more.

The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their Gipsy-Rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos.Morena y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed Rumba, Flamenco, Psychedelic Rock, Funk and Disco Music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo.

Makam madness gives way to instrumental prog on this burned-out last album, released in 1976, by Turkey's Anadolu Pop heroes. Mogollar was the band that never had a singer attached for long, and yet even more than Baris or Erkin, they consciously highlighted what was different about the new sounds of the era.Incredible fusion of ancient Anatolian melodies and instruments with prog/psych including ocassional piercing fuzz guitar. Recommended to anyone into John Berberian, Devil's Anvil and vintage Turkish psych.Remastered sound. Includes liner notes by Angela Sawyer.

Turkish ancient melodies get an '80s electro-funk treatment on this obscure album, originally released on the Diskotür label in 1985. Probably the work of an "ad-hoc" studio band (nothing is known about the musicians), this is a delirious mix of exotic melodies and lots of analogue synths, cheap Atari-styled electronic effects, distorted guitar and '80s beatboxes. File under: Anatolian funk, '80s boogie/electro, cosmic disco, Balearic and oriental grooves. First ever reissue!

Ohhh, those rolling 6/8 time signatures, wah-ed out guitars, throbbing bass lines & shimmery disco strings. After two sets of singles from the jet-setting 1970s Tehran pop scene, Pharaway Sounds brings you a third round-up of tunes from just before the Iranian revolution. You'll find rockers from bands like the Rebels, making their way through the western sounds of the late 70s. But maybe more important, hear the voices of the girls, sweet & tough alike, who all ran out & got their hair cut in a foxy Hamill camel just like trend-setter Googoosh. A set that veers from gypsy fiddles to crime jazz piano to Abba knock-offs, and it's all from the teen idols of stage & screen who once filled glossy magazines to promote their latest musical adventures.

The third album by Turkish psychedelic singer Edip Akbayram, originally released in 1982. This later album really ramps up the silly synthesizers. You'll hear whooshy '80s Rolands, vocals run through a harmonizer and tons of totally tubular bass popping, and it all makes it darned easy to hear just where the western intros and breaks stop. Ever wish Knight Rider's Kitt could drive to Istanbul? Take a ride on cheesy synthesizers with Edip at the wheel! This reissue comes with remastered sound and an insert.

Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here! Originally released as singles on Istanbul Plak between 1971 and 1975. Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high-profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like 'Turkish Freakout Vol. 2' or 'Istanbul 70', but there's way more to discover, and now you can.

First ever reissue of this private Dutch album from 1979: a latin-funk-psych-prog trip featuring groovy jazzy flute, superb acoustic/electric guitars, funky rhythm section, exotic percussion and some cool Oriental/Thai/Brazilian vibes. Angelo Noce Santoro is a guitar player with over forty-five years of musical career. A founding member of legendary psych-prog band Cosmic Dealer, Angelo has recorded and released albums under his own name and hes also behind projects like Palmeira (the first Dutch band playing Brazilian music), Santoro Brothers and Oriental Guitars among many others. His unique guitar playing, which incorporates surf, psychedelic, jazz and Oriental influences, has received praising from connoisseurs of obscure instrumental sounds such as Jello Biafra, who got in touch with Angelo after discovering one of his solo albums in a second-hand shop in the 80s. 'For You' was Angelo's first solo effort, released as a private pressing in 1979 on ANS, his own label. Angelo played bass, acoustic and electric guitars, flute and percussion. He was joined by ace flute player Steven Bishop, drummer Herman Muller and Lodewijk Hulsman on acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks were written by Angelo prior to 1979, with some of them dating back to the early 70s when he was with Cosmic Dealer.

Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul’s leftist counterculture with stompin’ prog keyboards. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. 1975’s ‘Nem Kaldi’ gathers more 60s-70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real-life assassins multiply, yet the double-time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.

As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi-eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mo?ollar and Bari? Manço's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo-covered voice. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records).

His very last name, Dinleten, means 'listen'. So back to Anatolia once more and hear the unhinged guitar and electric baglama behind Turkish psychedelia's charismatic singer Ersen. He was discovered by Cem, was connected to Mogollar and 3 Hür-El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dadaslar. There's loads of B-sides and burly moves on these 70s singles which make his second LP, released in 1978. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars, organs and the poweful voice of Ersen. Debut album, released in 1977, by one by one of Anatolian Rock's most sheerly talented vocalists. Turkish psych-rock with some amazing funk drums and fuzzed out guitars. Ersen spent time in Mogollar, 3 Hür-El, and Cem Karaca's Kardaslar before cementing his reputation as the frontman of Dadaslar. His voice can range from one that has a soft edge (where he swallows his notes a bit, like a muezzin would), to growling belt-outs that could have fronted any 80s metal act.Ersen and his ever-changing backup band wore Slade haircuts and loud jackets with rainbow pants or silver platform shoes, and they grew their moustaches just as long as the Beatle bangs of their Western counterparts.Get the synth-wizz, funk breaks and fuzzed-out prog riffage behind one of Anatolian Rock's best vocalists!Original gatefold artwork, insert with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records), remastered sound.

A killer blend of '70s sounding hard progressive/psychedelic sounds with long ripping Mini-Moog and analogue synth attacks and hard lead guitar, but also mellow vibes, Arabian folky touches, exotic percussion and a floating -at times funky- rhythm section. The vocals are in English. The core of this six-piece existed of brothers Mohamed and Nabil Alsadeqi, who had already been making western orientated music since 1969. The LP coms with sound from the master tapes and includes an insert with photos and liners.

Where does a band of Indian guys in East South Africa even play, and how on earth would they end up with fuzzy guitar riffs, wah-wah and funky drums? Riddles abound when you discover a platter like this one. Durban, famous for its beaches and also for beach signs that marked off areas for white people, had a very unique dance band scene in 1971. The Vampires are a strange footnote in a strange world, and they slosh through each song like they’re having the time of their lives. The mostly instrumental band covers everything from a soundtrack that prefigures the drama of Ennio Morricone fuzz, to middle of the road Nashville country, to Zeppelin, with flute, organ and fuzz guitar high in the mix. Like the undead, the Vampires now rise from having been long buried. But they only showed up to get their dirt in your ears. Imagine if Julia Child had marched against Vietnam, stood on the steps of the Pentagon & placed a flower in a gun barrel. Selda Bağcan's later records have that same cross of easygoing motherly warmth & righteous anger. This 1979 album (technically her 4th, although 6 of these songs were also released on her 3rd), was recorded when Turkey was at its most politically polarized. Selda was sentenced to a total of over 500 years in prison right about the time it came out. A pile of acoustic guitars & bağlamas all going off at once under a blanket of reverb, with lyrics about blood, wood, mountains, families, and desperate troubles, so it's a thick squirt for a folk album. Selda's voice can either be sultry or really surge with emotion, and when she does belt one, it's oddly high & completely unique. Her reward was the love of Turkey's people, but also 9 trials and 3 prison terms from the right wing military government of the 80s.Remastered sound, insert / booklet with liner notes.

What if Bob Dylan was also a dentist, and then he hired Keith Emerson to play keyboards on songs he wrote for a play? It happened in Istanbul, friends. Turkish folk singer Fikret K?z?lok  started out balancing his interest in the toothy arts with playing rhythm guitar in a Beatles knock-off band. He quickly gave both up for more serious acoustic songwriting, unveiling aged melodies and florid picking that evoked the long history of the hilly Turkish countryside. This collection of singles from 1971-75 lets you taste each of K?z?lok’s and Anatolia’s many moods.

In Turkey, psychedelia wasn’t just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed-out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid-60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah-ed out guitar solos. You know how record nerds are. They’ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn. As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would’ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran. Not that he wasn’t afraid to put someone else’s idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks’ chords from ‘You Really Got Me’. It’s more that Shahram’s rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from. Here’s a well-deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl.

In 1970s Tehran, the classically-trained Ramesh played the serious, quiet marquess against Googoosh’s langorous pop princess. Both singers made the papers every time they changed their haircuts & appeared on tv frequently. However, while Googoosh now runs a cosmetics company in Los Angeles, they say Ramesh was killed in the political turmoil of the late 70s because she was a lesbian. Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that she was a funky queen whose rich voice sits like a fat mink coat, twirling it’s melancholy way around long-necked lutes, backed by flurries of frame & goblet drums. And the sleazy, Western brass, strings & synths are here too, slathered across rare singles for your shameless dancing pleasure. Welcome to the unpredictable world of pre-revolutionary Iranian pop music.

Turkish band Bunalim (Turkish for "Depression") is a true legend: they were the absolute wildest and crudest band from the Anatolian Rock scene. Under the wing of Cem Karaça, who was their manager and producer, they released a few singles which are all collected here."Even more brain-blasted than Erkin Koray's deliberately underground band that lived in a house together (Yeralti Dörtlüsü), these dirty nude guys were in all ways hairy, and they stacked their Selmer amplifiers just as high as any rock band you could name. Drink up the John Bonham drum fills, evil Sabbath guitar, and sickly brooding organ." (Angela Sawyer, Weirdo Records, USA)
