Antwood (a.k.a. Canada's Tristan Douglas) returns to Planet Mu with his secondalbum 'Sponsored Content'. The album is more reflective than his debut, last year's'Virtuous.scr'. The relentless mood of the first album has given way to a moremelodic, stripped out sound. It still shakes with speed and energy, but with morespace, more moments of delicate sadness and strange cyborg pop. What comes tothe fore in 'Sponsored Content' is Tristan's gift for melody, coupled with theuncanny feeling that somehow his strange music is an entire ecosystem of its own.

It’s been five years since his acclaimed debut ‘Severant’ and time has proved it prescient; its futuristic trap influence is now ubiquitous. ‘Slow Knife‘ seems to return to where ‘Severant’ left off, but with the intricate sound design of last year’s haunting EP ‘Assertion Of A Surrounding Presence’ subsumed into the compositions, making them more exacting and beautifully crafted. Between albums Kuedo has been working as a sound designer and composer for hire and the application of intent and widescreen rigour that commercial work requires has definitely found its way into the new album. ‘Slow Knife’ has the subtlety, ambition and pacing of a brilliant soundtrack - a sense of an album of scenes, that easily lends itself to an impressionistic narrative. But, as with ‘Severant’, the title suggests relationship unease, with the slow knife being a metaphor for the building resentment in any close relationship. ‘Slow Knife’ is almost two albums; the first half, according to Kuedo, invokes the seduction of the city, taking the music of Michael Mann’s ‘Manhunter’ as a cue, with the latter half being inspired by the bloody starscapes and voodoo wilderness of films such as ‘Angel Heart’, ‘Night Of The Hunter’ and more recently the ‘True Detective’ series. Both halves of the album are also in thrall to Mica Levi’s inspiring ‘Under The Skin’ soundtrack, especially in the turbulence of the mid-section. The songs of the albums first half are synthetic and seductive, a gelatinous veil with shades of the pseudo-sophisticated trance of Enigma, of all things, underpinned with dusky unsettling shadows and atmosphere. ‘In Your Sleep’, perhaps surprisingly, features the vocals of Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, who settles his dark, whispered vocals into the moonlit shadowy atmosphere. ‘Floating Forest’ is the first track to allow back some of Kuedo’s experimentation with the Southern rap template, which he explored before it became commonplace, with echoed drum splashes and a sinister repetitive motif, ending with a haunting growl. The second half of the album enters wilderness territory with ‘Approaching’s slow descending notes, before ‘Broken Fox - Black Hole’ throws the record into the cathartic darkness, as undulating chords play hide and seek with riotous reeds and scratchy strings grown from challenging collaborations with cello player Koenraad Ecker (from Lumisokea). ‘Breaking The Surface’ shivers and coils, before metal and strings dominate while ‘In Your Skin’ feels like being lost in a vast hinterland before ‘Warmer Light’ introduces some memories of sunshine, with its plucked bassline and spiralling dub. ‘Halogen Light’ opens with the sound of crickets and a clear piano, cleansing the soul before ‘Lathe’ brings things down to earth with a short, yet powerful coda.

Claude Speeed returns to Planet Mu with his second album 'Infinity Ultra'. He describes the record he's been creating since he started making computer music as one "conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age; and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response - a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future." 'Infinity Ultra' takes inspiration from sleep paralysis, monumental artworks, children's anime, abandoned places, ghostly rave pasts and terrifying silicon valley futures, and the limitless anger of the digital present. These influences have been channelled into an impressionistic burst of varied creativity: Shimmering VSTs; monolithic noise; euphoric blocks of colourful sound; trance stabs and the citrus rush of hardcore; towering drones, and skynet math rock - all rendered against cold, sinister space and nostalgic synth melodies. The album reveals the artist's Scottish roots, viewed at a hazy distance from his Berlin home - a series of memories of Glasgow's experimental psychedelic underground, its DIY rock scene and defiant club hedonism. These genre relationships are blurred and at times they contrast with audible brutality; the result is a hybrid, sculptured way of rendering music - minimal specifics, maximum emotions.

RP Boo returns with 'The Ultimate RP Boo', showing off six brand new cuts that mix a range of styles with his vivid use of samples and improvised drum programming. 'The Ultimate' kicks things off with a sliding synth riff that wouldn't sound out of place on a '91 Prodigy track with cut up rave vocal interjections over Bu's trademark pulsing bass. 'Bang with the Funk' crushes the 1-2-3-4-5 Sesame Street song, chopping its samples into hard shapes. Things turn dark and minimal with 'The King' which features a sample from Fresh, with strange atonal tones playing off against spooky chords and a tactile bass. On the flipside 'What Am I?' pairs syncopated snares and 4/4 bass pulses while percussion bangs and shimmers over clipped diva refrains and anxious piano. 'Bu'Moon' meshes together some pumping horn blurts and some old fashioned steamy synth wooshes that wouldn't feel out of place on a 50's sci-fi film into a relentless battle track. 'Electric Energy' finishes the EP, sampling an unusual pop source and chopping them over pulsing half time subs that pitch up and down around slipping and sliding drum hits.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Ekoplekz returns with his fourth album for Planet Mu, in the shape of 10-tracker "Bioprodukt". The unique lo-fi, woozy sound of Bristol's Nick Edwards stays intact while he veers towards the nineties for inspiration: the bleep and bass sound of the north of England is one touchpoint and the acid gurgles of the 303 are another. While the murky lo-fi production levels and evocative melodies remain, they are now bolstered by a more muscular rhythmic chassis. Snappier kicks and snares mingle with dense layers of percussion and deep undulating sub-basslines adding a funkier edge, as typified by opening track "Elevation" where playful beats interlock with breezy keyboard flourishes to create something uncharacteristically upbeat. Similarly, the gentle, fluid motion of "Slipstream" and "Calypzoid" represent some of the most appealingly chilled grooves in the Ekoplekz canon to date. But the darker-edged material remains. "Expedition" has a pensive, percussion-heavy feel whilst "Acrid Acid" is a dirt-encrusted slow-mo techno meltdown. "Transcience" displays the Ekoplekz trademark dub-fx in full flight over a driving lo-end, before "Descent" leads down to the final section, where the beats fade out, replaced by rippling layers of spectral ferric ambience on the epic "Low-X Over", before finishing with the radiant looped stasis of "Denier Daze". The albums shifting, imperfect patterns and muted colours are visually mirrored in the beautifully realised sleeve by the Print Project.

Skrillex has cited Degenerate as the album which inspired him to start producing. Before they caused too much damage Vex'd split in 2008. Whilst the murky four-track cassette sound and dirty analogue textures are still very much in place, keen ears might spot a subtle change in emphasis. There are less of the radiophonic sci-fi sounds, ancient drum machines and none of the post-punk bass or guitar. Instead, Nick Edwards mainly focuses on invoking a blurry, saturated false-memory of the leftfield electronica that was the soundtrack to his life in the early to mid-1990s.As the album title suggests, "Reflekzionz" is a record that unapologetically dwells on past experiences, like flicking through an old album of bleached-out photos from days gone by, and on tracks like "Downtone", with its extended, unchanging groove and wash of muted, untethered synth melody, the aim is to invite the listener to join in a state of reverie. "Midnight Cliffs" and "Saturation (Full Rinse)" are unabashed homages to the artists who inspired Edwards, but always with enough production twists and turns to ensure the results are never simply a facsimile of the originals. Opening track "A Caustic Romance" could almost be a lost AFX beat but adds a touch of hand-played naive melody that brings to mind mid-seventies Cluster, blending different eras in a lo-fi melting pot.Elsewhere there are other influences on display. "Quakers Road Skank" sounds like Raymond Scott jamming with Lee Perry at the Black Ark "Repeater (How Did It Feel?)" tips its hat to the work of indie-psych gods Spacemen 3, whilst "Seduktion" adds a touch of Kraftwerk-like metallic sheen. But as with practically all Ekoplekz records, the unifying factor is the primitive dubwise production, heavy on the filtering, echo and equalisation, never more apparent than on "Dubnium 268" where heavy layers of drone and melody crash and burn along an unstable rhythmic path. The album closes with the gentle, woozy atmosphere of "Day In May", where fragile, muted melodies drift in and out of sync on a bed of corroded drum machine, fading into the distance like a half-remembered dream - the perfect finish to an hour spent in the company of Nick Edwards at his most 'reflective'.

Drew Lustman leaves his ‘Falty DL' persona at the door and dons his Cowboy hat for a new alter ego - ‘The Crystal Cowboy' - his cleanest, most concise record to date. The eleven tracks here are a body of work that Drew put together quickly, free of the connotations and associations of his Falty DL moniker. Creating music in the small hours of the morning rejuvenated his sense of experimentation and freedom. Under this new name Drew found himself making the kind of music he would DJ with or play to friends without the pressure of the conceptual weighing him down. Like all great projects between Planet Mu and Mr. Lustman, these songs found themselves in Mike Paradinas' inbox with little fanfare, letting the music speak for itself. The album often uses the speed or tropes of hardcore and drum & bass, assembling tracks a bit like lego, but adding in Drew's own almost opaque elements of sophisticated soul and funk to give the roughness some melodic light and emotional pull.

Mr. Mitch is one of a small group of producers who in the last few years have been re-imagining the decade-old genre of Grime. His debut album is called 'Parallel Memories' and Miles has an intriguing story that explains that title. When listening to his tracks, he sees the same vivid scenes in his head each time he replays the music, often repeated snapshots of his life in various impossible scenarios or distorted situations. This made him think "What if the images I'm seeing are memories from an alternative version of me in a parallel dimension?" A question which reflects his vision of Grime too, as his instrumentals are informed by a quite personal and emotive alter-life, where Grime's famous minimalism gives way to a gentle subtlety and is imbued with a very different feeling to the brash aggression associated with the genre.

Traxman’s debut album showcased Cornelius Ferguson’s brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of Footwork’s house-derived beat science. The selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on Traxman's abilities. Instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of Footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. Often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter. A number of the tracks here show off the high-speed micro-edited possibilities of Footwork, that end up bringing the sound closer to a faster, hands-on, mpc-punched version of micro-house, bringing out a jagged, fitful character that keeps you on your toes.

After last year’s album ‘Love & Devotion’ the husband and wife duo of Mike Paradinas and Lara Rix-Martin follow up with ‘Weird Drift’. The album shows just how much their ability to write confident and thoughtful pop songs has developed, while still being able to retain the sleepy cushion of steamy synth pop that made the first record so rewarding to listen to. This time album features the vocals of a Vezelay, a.k.a. French singer and producer Matthieu Le Berre, who brings a gentle poised falsetto to the duo’s productions along with a delicate but hopeful angst. ‘Weird Drift’ has a restrained and varied sense of emotional drama, but also a deeper sense of happiness, or at least the sense of becoming happy that was only hinted at on the first record.

Taken from their critically acclaimed and eponymous debut, the track exhudes southern hemisphere sunshine with a warm guitar figure sending a gentle bounce through the track. Lead singer John delivers a gentle falsetto before the track drops into a scuffy bass coda. Beatmaker extraodinaire Seiji turns a gentle piano line that you barely notice in the original into the centrepiece of his mix, running rhythmic, crunchy kicks and snares alongside bubbling filtered effects. On the flip The 2 Bears create a thing of beauty. A slow, rippling mix that's absorbed all the sunshine of the original, turning it inside-out and building the track up gently over a slow house beat, before dropping in gentle repeated vocals over the epic nine minute timespan.

The music here works at higher speeds than the dubstep and hip hop tempos he has used in the past, and explores more fully the dynamic tensions between space and detail, melody and atmospheric sound than his previous releases. 'Nebula Dance' assimilates the influences of current music being made at the speeds between 140 to 160 bpm, reacting to develpoments in dubstep, jungle and more recently footwork, retraining Ital Tek's instinct for deep and melodic music with an emphasis on dramatic drum work and impressionistic synths with restrained precision.
