Having released this debut EP last Summer on the record label / psychedelic familia that is Multi Culti, Irish-born mystic Peter Power now joins the Polychrome ranks with the proper hold-it-in-your-hands vinyl release of JUNGLES OF UFORDIA. Peter made a name for himself in Berlin as resident and booker at Kleine Reise and subsequently Loftus Hall. Out of this flowered a network of connections that have made him a cult DJs DJ. After a wholesome 5 years in Berlin, and with the jungle in his sights, he continued his journey to Brasil, where he currently drifts within the chaotic harmony of the VOODOOHOP collective, home to other favourites such as Thomash, Urubu Marinka and Carrot Green. Jungles of Ufordia presents a trip into an experimental universe, into the dark realm of sacred light, an esoteric space between familiar realities, the place of paradox and cosmic birth. Expect rainforest recordings snuggling up to saturated slow-mo beats and beautiful bass lines!

Cummi Flu is the latest persona of ever morphing, multi-media illusionist Oliver Doerell. Originating from Brussels, the analogue-electronic pioneer has been the driving force behind earlier incarnations Dictaphone and SWOD, as well as embodying the Odd Orchestra of Raz Ohara. Well-versed in downbeat electronics, Cummi Flu sees Doerell explore his acid-laced visions of psychedelic forms and frequencies. The first recordings present a collection of sound collage cut-ups based on home-made instruments with self-tuned rubber bands and bass kalimba at its beating heart. The resulting tracks are an exploration into otherworldly rhythms with the rise and fall of a swollen tide. Cummi Flu produces a hard to place sound, while at the same time preying on ancient feelings of estrangement, sanctuary and self-exploration.

Valeriu Borcos and Eduard Gabia are Karpov not Kasparov, a musical game of chess between synthesizers and drums. Beginning in Bucharest in 2009, the duo soon incorporated an analogue visual artist and contemporary dancers into their live performances, resulting in a theatrical show and a kind of real-time soundtrack to the action around them. The duo’s unique dynamic creates a psychedelic synth-driven sound, combining oriental melodies with the drive of a full live drum kit. “Soundtrack for a game of Chess” is their debut LP, comprising a selection of the best tracks from their previous two EPs, which never appeared on vinyl. “Mechanical Turk”, named after a faux chess-playing machine constructed in the late 18th century, displays the darker side to the band’s undulating sound, as the vintage synth creates a spacey Eastern overlay to the driving bass and drums. There are moments of downbeat jazz-infused introspection, such as the track “Kaissa”, named after the goddess of chess, as well as the ever-onward kraut drums of “Choose you colour gipsy dark” overlaid with the rise and fall of a pulsating synth. Yet the record is not simply a dark synth composition, at times K not K sway towards a more playful, experimental pop sound reminiscent of early electronic pioneers such as Harmonia or Vangelis, while still managing to retain a modern, otherworldly feel. Having garnered great acclaim within their native Romania, their debut EPs also received high praise internationally from sources such as WFMU. While last year, Mehmet Aslan’s re-work of “Mechanical Turk” released on Huntleys + Palmers made waves across the dance floors of the world.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Formed at the beginning of 2010 in East London, l’Orchestre du Mont-Plaisant are a band of multi-talented musicians, featuring Juste Voyant on guitar, Luke Warmcop on drums, Piro on bass and Graham Mushnik on accordion and organ. Their debut was released on Catapulte Records in 2011, their second LP, simply titled II, is set to come out in Summer 2015 on Polychrome Sounds. Orchestre du Montplaisant are a worldly troupe, who display the intrepidness and roaming interests of true explorers. The band’s sound can be defined in its diversity, ranging from a darker form of mystic exotica to the sun-kissed soundtrack to some future film set on the shores of a faraway island. Their new record defiantly combines the authentic sounds of fuzzy 70s high-life, the sensual sway of oriental Arabiana and a trippy Cumbia track of the sweltering kind, a kin to that of The Meridian Brothers. The charm of this LP lies in the band’s ubiquitous authenticity. These songs could so easily be the standards, which you would otherwise hear covered and re-covered from generation to generation in their native countries. The record is awash with guest vocals, bouncing carnival beats and vintage organ solos, inviting you to close your eyes and imagine the sunbeams reflecting off the ice-cubes in your glass, while your feet carry you away, across the sand. The band have significantly evolved their outernational sound since their first release and have recorded two sessions for Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music, as well as enjoying regular plays on different BBC Radio shows, including Tom Ravenscroft’s.

Release:2014 / DE – Original
Genre:Pop
Born in Berlin in the early 2000s, Naphta were a collection of musicians working to a smudged manifesto in the beginnings of what has now become the Neukölln you’ll find, just south of Kreuzberg. The band set out with the aim to play as few notes as possible on instruments they couldn’t play. The result was guitar solos played on flutes, broken synthesisers providing a crystalline sheen and an all-embracing attitude towards to those moments of chemical bedlam and everything that follows. Their music represents an excursion into another world, with ever-changing soundscapes flashing past the portholes. Moments of high-tempo Kraut crescendos are balanced with melodic wind instruments caressing the ship’s sagging sails. A spectacular swirl of drive and drift. Naphta evaporated in 2011 after several members moved out of town and a water pipe burst in the practice room. They left behind only a few recordings, damp wall paper and the hazy memories of their chaotic performances, fading pictures littered with faulty equipment, cross-dressing and a burnt-down stage.

In pursuit of cosmic perfection, Oha Aho play a heady mix of improvisation and rehearsed melodies. Their live shows combine effervescent vocals from the transmagnetic isles, primary school percussion and hypnotic synths/guitars. Elements of krautrock, lo-fi afrobeat and otherworldly ambient merge together to create an eddying wind, upon which the audience are carried past tribal temples, glacial wonders and future civilisations. This is music for flying carpets through the doors of perception. Emotional and exotic at the same time, Oha Aho have a way of producing the strangest fruit, aural delicacies to be enjoyed at the high table of modern music.

Mystical Communication Service are a Berlin-based music project fronted by the fictional Yanez Di Mompracem, backed by a collection of eccentric and well-travelled bandmates from all corners of the globe. The band is an amalgamation of wayward drifters and modern-day mystics, uniting to play their distinctive style of psychedelic and experimental rock. Their sound oscillates between intricate blues-driven solos, creating a sense of ancient and emotive storytelling, and rhythmic explorations of unfamiliar yet alluring states of mind. Listening to Mystical Communication Service represents an enchanted excursion into a nomadic world, where the concepts of sanity and self-awareness fade away. The band creates an ethereal soundscape, leaving you adrift in a haze of desire and dream-like apparitions. Their debut LP – The Marvelous Space Adventures of John Blue follows its fictional protagonist on his own voyage of self-discovery and expanded consciousness. Moments of tender reflection and warmth like the track Silver are balanced with passages of psychedelic disorientation and trepidation such as The Trip. It’s a record that will leave you washed up on the shore of tomorrow with only blurred memories of a truly intense experience.
