Independent producers and DJs have been busy creating world class music in bedrooms, kitchens and garages for years. Meanwhile, photographer Raph Rashid has traveled the globe, gaining access to these inner sanctums, one by one. The tremendous variety of set-ups and layouts used by in-home producers is artfully documented in the pages of Back to the Lab. Intimate photos of the creators amongst their instruments, gear, record collections and ephemera offer unprecedented access. Notes about the producers, their environment and “essential” releases round out this love-letter to the underground. Rashid has been checking his list since the publication of his bestselling Behind the Beat, making sure to document the old-school producers he’d missed, meanwhile keeping an eye out for fresh new talent. Featured artists and producers include: Alchemist, Ant, Babu, EL-P, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Lord Finesse, Oh No and many more…AlchemistAntBabuDabryeDiamond DEl-pFlying LotusDj FormatGeorgia Anne MuldrowJake OneJazzy JeffJucoJulianoJust BlazeKenny DopeKhalilLord FinesseMitsu The BeatsOddiseeOh NoPlutonic LabRhettmaticSa RaVadimWajeedYoung RJ

Kat Dogtok - Verehrtes Phantom
Kat Dogtok
Verehrtes Phantom
15,00 €*
Preorder 29.09.2017

The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick Children's Book

Storytelling has been a part of the hip-hop lexicon since the artform’s earliest days. And in all those decades, there has never been a tale-weaver like Slick Rick. Even masters who came along in Rick’s wake – ranging from Will Smith to Ghostface Killah and Eminem – know that even though they blazed their own paths, they never did it better than the Slick one. When it comes to Rick and his tales, 1988’s “Children’s Story” is perhaps his best, recited to this day by fans and MCs in training as a rite of passage. Just hearing the opening lines begins a sing-along that can quickly fill a room: “Once upon a time / Not long ago / When people wore pajamas / And lived life slow….”Get On Down, known for its unique approach to packaging hip-hop classics, has come up with another winner here, presenting the lyrics to this immortal rap tale in never-before-seen form. Rick’s lines from the song are re-created in visual form in a 16-page book with a puffy cover – presented like a legit children’s book, thick pages and all. From the little boy who was misled to the tense police chase, to the unsure children hearing the story from their “uncle Ricky,” this is the most unique way the story has ever been presented.Of course there is music to match – for this deluxe bundle comes packaged with an accompanying CD of “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick”, the 1988 Def Jam album that made Rick a worldwide star.Whether you pick this up for yourself or to give to the hip-hop fan on your shopping list who will stare wide-eyed at the unique package, no one will walk away from this one disappointed.

Mit Beiträgen von David Alexander, Tobias Barenthin Lindblad, Thomas Bratzke, BROM, CLINT 176, Paul Vector Codierer, Christian Driesen, Paul Luis Fechter, Lukas Fuchsgruber, Allan Gretzki, Frank Hartmann, HIDDEN INDEXES, Ilaria Hoppe, ID33, Dmitry Ilko, Matze Jung, Jule Köhler, Bianca Ludewig, Markus Mai, Christoph May, Peter Michalski, Tobias Morawski, Joachim Penzel, Sandra Rummler, SADE, Willi Schmudde, Paul Schweizer, Jenz Steiner, Josef Streichholz, Barbara Uduwerella, Eric Winkler & Georg Zolchow.352 Seiten, in deutscher Sprache, 140 x 225 mm, Softcover mit Umschlag.

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, artists, punks, anarchists, squatters, visionaries, and oddballs discovered the no-man’s-land behind it—a practically lawless zone in the heart of the city. Unbridled creativity was unleashed in the free spaces among the crumbling façades of old buildings. A variety of clubs, bars, techno parties, galleries, uprisings, and exhibitions sprung up, among them the well-known institutions Tacheles and Schokoladen. These new spaces became a magnet for young people from around the world, who flocked to the burgeoning scene. These wild years may seem long past, but their effect is still palpable and has made Berlin into what it is today. The city’s well-established reputation as a creative hotspot is partially grounded in the myths of the riotous 1990s.In its more than 200 photographs, Berlin Wonderland brings this unique time of upheaval, resistance, and rearrangement back to life. Looking at the sleek shops and buildings of Berlin’s Mitte district today, it seems practically impossible that these photos were taken only 20 years ago. Yet that part of the city has indeed undergone radical change since then—on streets where ruins and piles of rubble once stood, tourists now stroll in droves. Twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is time to tell the visual story of an extraordinary time in the Mitte district’s history that only few experienced. The striking photography in Berlin Wonderland is supplemented by interviews and quotes from those who shaped its subculture. Musician and photographer Chris Keller has lived in Berlin since 1990. He is a founding member of the Elektronauten and has lived and worked in spaces including Tacheles, IM Eimer, Synlabor, and Schokoladen. Today, he works on the music projects Resident Kafka and Elekronauten and puts on the Oddlab series held at the Club der polnischen Versager. Anke Fesel has also lived in Berlin since 1990. She managed a variety of events—including Laut?+?Luise, a concert series for new music—at spaces including Tacheles, IM Eimer, and Schokoladen. She started her career as a designer for the city newspaper scheinschlag. Today, she is the director of the graphic design studio capa. In 2007, Keller and Fesel founded the photo agency bobsairport. They now represent more than 80 photographers, most of whom are based in Berlin.21 x 27,4 cm, 240 pages, hardcover.
