Soft Kill - Choke
Soft Kill
Choke
LP | 2016 | US | Original (Profound Lore)
18,99 €*
Release:2016 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Portland’s Soft Kill began in 2010 by releasing An Open Door, one of the most highly regarded post-punk albums of the last ten years. Founding member Tobias Sinclair (ex-Blessure Grave) joins Conrad Vollmer (Warm Hands) on guitar, drummer Maximillion Avalon (Chromatics, Antioch Arrow, Get Hustle, Atriarch) and Owen Glendower on synths for their fourth album Choke, an eight song suite. This follows on the heels of 2015’s Heresy, which was much more claustrophobic and oppressive than their debut. Rooted in influences such as the Chameleons, Wire and The Sound, this latest album pulls delicately from foundational elements of the Cocteau Twins and Spaceman 3. It places the listener deeply under water, gasping for breath and beyond hope with tracks like “On The Inside,” featuring the vocals of legendary Mark Burgess of the Chameleons. Drawing from the first wave of post punk, the songs slip seamlessly into the cascading and ethereal elements of early shoegaze. Soft Kill has discovered a depth of invention and creativity with their latest, vast and engaging in scope, invoking an enduring and melancholic bliss. Filled with warm, lush guitars, it teems with melodic songs, generating urgency and vitality, elevating all that is potent in post punk. A culmination of years perfecting a unique sound, Choke places itself firmly in the canon.

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Six doomed years in creation since their debut album Despond, Nashville, Tennessee melancholic death / funeral doom metal band Loss have completed their anticipated masterwork of pure doom death worship Horizonless, one of the most anticipated metal releases of the year. Reaching further into the void and traveling even more beyond the realms of hopelessness and despair, this album is a journey devoid of all hope and redemption, one where heartbreak, total death and never-ending despondency prevails. Produced and engineered by Billy Anderson (Pallbearer, Bell Witch, Neurosis, Red House Painters) in the band’s hometown, giving the band their most monumental sound yet, Horizonless (which also features guest vocals from Wrest of Leviathan) forges the band’s sound tapestry into more vast and sprawling territory: heavier, darker, more melancholic, and sorrowful. Where their previous album laid down the foundation that gave them the reputation as the saddest and bleakest band in the movement, this latest forges that funeral march onwards towards ruin, decay, and utter oblivion.

Trumpeting Ecstasy
LP | 2017 | US | Original (Profound Lore)

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Maryland / Pennsylvania experimental death-noise band Full Of Hell have embarked on quite the journey leading up to the their latest full-length album Trumpeting Ecstasy, their most punishing, virulent, and dynamic work to date. The embryonic beginnings of Full of Hell displayed their palette at its most primitive: d-beat and blast-ridden hardcore punk, with spats of noise and caustic rhythm. After the release of their Profound Lore Records debut Full Of Hell & Merzbow in late 2014, their third full-length album, the band began to truly come into their own, combining elements of their previous sound with grindcore, death / black metal, sonically laden power electronics and industrial pounding. The band followed this up with a direct collaboration album with The Body and several EPs, one of them being their most-recent split 7-inch with Nails (which debuted on #2 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart). The band builds upon their Merzbow collaboration and the releases succeeding it with this latest—going into God City Studios with Kurt Ballou at the production helm, the result is their best and strongest. Sky tearing and sonically cataclysmic, this aural deluge also features guest appearances by Aaron Turner (Sumac / Old Man Gloom / Mamiffer / Isis), Nate Newton (Converge / Old Man Gloom), Andrew Nolan (Column Of Heaven / The Endless Blockade), and Canadian singer/songwriter Nicole Dollanganger.

Australia’s Impetuous Ritual follow up their last album Unholy Congregation Of Hypocritical Ambivalence with their new musical abomination of ambient death metal surrealism Blight Upon Martyred Sentience, which takes their unhinged vortex-like chaos into more abstract, cavernous, and otherworldly realms. With a sound even less conventional, weirder and alien than its two predecessors, this release harnesses a much darker atmosphere (if one could even imagine that would be possible), veering off into abstract noise and dark ambient, creating a more depraved, violent, torturous and malevolent audial canvas than any other band in extreme death metal today—the band has transcended and inverted the genre unto something of their own vision unparalleled.Australian ambient death metal surrealists return with an even more abstract and depraved transcendent entry

Infrared Horizon
LP | 2017 | US | Original (Profound Lore)

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
With their second full-length album Infrared Horizon, NY-based death metal band Artificial Brain take their brand of brutal, guttural yet technical and ambient sci-fi death metal to a new galaxial plateau, much more advanced than their lauded debut album Labyrinth Constellation. Once again produced by Colin Marson (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Krallice) at The Thousand Caves, this latest (featuring art by Adam Burke) sees the band traveling towards a sonic realm where the music has become more dissonant, atmospheric, and just overall more otherworldly. The lyrics and themes deal with the concept of a dystopian future in which robots and cyborgs have outlived human beings. Conceived in 2011 by guitarist Dan Gargiulo (Revocation) and vocalist Will Smith (ex-Biolich), rounded out by bass player Samuel Smith (Luminous Vault), guitarist Jon Locastro, and drummer Keith Abrami, the band dropped their debut album on Profund Lore in 2014 to wide praise within the circles of death metal. Along with touring, the band would also have their music played and were even name dropped on multiple occasions in the popular CBS television shows Elementary and Limitless. This latest album sees the sonic architecture laid down by the band go further into the beyond and infinite.

A sonic monolith to behold, the album embraces a bigger production and sound than any of the band’s previous releases. This creative peak sets a new standard in modern-day American metal. Heartless was tracked and recorded direct to analog at Fellowship Sound Studios in their hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, mixed by producer Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Soundgarden, Judas Priest), and mastered by Dave Collins (Metallica, John Williams, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore).

Since their formation in the summer of 2005, Subrosa has been recognized as one of the more unique bands in the doom / rock genre. Underpinned by a monolithically heavy rhythm section and featuring two electric violinists and the enchanting vocals of Rebecca Vernon, the Salt Lake City-based group garnered widespread critical acclaim in 2011 for their third album (and Profound Lore debut) No Help for the Mighty Ones, a powerful mix of Kyuss, Sleep, L7 and PJ Harvey as well as folk, neoclassical and chamber music influences. With their newest full-length, Subrosa presents their most accomplished and enrapturing work yet, one that shall bring the band even more accolades. More Constant Than the Gods continues in the vein of its predecessor while improving upon the aspects that landed that release on so many “Best of 2011” lists (Decibel, Pitchfork’s “Show No Mercy” column, etc.). The meticulously composed and beautifully structured album is not only the best-sounding Subrosa recording yet, it’s also the heaviest. Destined to be one of the most lauded doom metal / rock releases of 2013, More Constant Than the Gods will earn Subrosa a place alongside Royal Thunder, Kylesa and Witch Mountain as one of the most prominent bands of the genre.

Bay Area metal monstrosity Ritual Chamber is commanded solely by multi-instrumentalist and underground death metal veteran Dario Derna (a.k.a. Numinas), who is also the mastermind behind Khrom, was part of underground cult band Infester, and spent time in acts such as Drawn & Quartered, Funebrarum and, of course, the mighty Evoken. Like an extension of his work in Infester combined with the doomy atmosphere of Evoken, Ritual Chamber is a culmination of Derna’s 25 years active in the underground and represents a return to his death metal roots. The entity made its presence known in 2013 with the Pits of Tentacled Screams demo, which made a huge impression in the underground death metal scene. Ritual Chamber’s debut album was tracked and mixed at San Francisco’s Light Rail Studios (Vhol, Hammers of Misfortune). A massive, brutal and dark monolith of death metal terror, Obscurations (To Feast on the Seraphim) will lay its foundation upon the American death metal scene as one of its new promising pillars.

Charismata, the duo’s second EP (which follows their 2015 EP Communion released on limited edition cassette on Graceless Recordings), is a primal, hypnotic, and hallucinatory set of four songs, conjuring mythological experiences of death, rebirth, and battles of the inner self.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Received a 7.5 rating from Pitchfork. With their third album What Graceless Dawn, Oakland’s Worm Ouroboros bring into existence their deepest and most moving work yet. On the follow-up to the band’s sophomore release, 2012’s Come The Thaw, bassist/vocalist Lorraine Rath (ex-The Gault / Amber Asylum), guitarist/vocalist Jessica Way (Barren Harvest), and drummer Aesop Dekker (Vhol, ex-Agalloch / Ludicra) take the band’s sound to a new level of sophistication through their amalgam of morose 4AD-esque doom, introspective death rock, dark ambient, and enchanting chamber goth. Replete with obsessive bass lines, ambient guitar layers and overtones, the alluring vocal inter-twinings between Rath and Way, and Dekker’s subtle yet procession-like percussion, this sonic vision of tragedy and despair brings the curtain down on the year with one of the most crippling and gut-wrenching releases in the realm.

Fuoco Fatuo was born in 2011, in the middle of the ghastly lakes of Varese, Italy. Starting out as an occult and oppressive death / doom band with an eerie and gloomy debut album The Viper Slithers In The Ashes Of What Remains, which followed several EPs, they explore the darkest and most desolate spaces through a sickened development of sound, like a flood of impenetrable black magma. Their new album Backwater is a massive and suffocating funeral doom opus, focused on the distressing awareness of the nothingness, transcendence in the oblivion, and feeding on the black void. The relationship between the state of mind and nature, desolation, and the vast sense of distance are also main themes. An introspective, mournful journey, deeply rooted into the unknown.

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Sebastian Montesi (bassist/vocalist of Mitochondrion), vocalist/bassist Shawn Haché (vocalist/guitarist of Mitochondrion) and drummer Zack Chandler, Auroch have been on the live circuit consistently through various shows, tours and festivals in the US, Canada, and Europe, including Maryland Deathfest. Their debut From Forgotten Worlds was re-issued on 20 Buck Spin, and most recently, their split/collaboration 7-inch with their co-conspirator sister band Mitochondrion came out via Dark Descent. Now the enveloping shadow of chaos looms with the band’s new album, their darkest, most brutal, complex, musically virulent release to date. Mute Books carries on the innovative Canadian death metal tradition laid down by the likes of Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, and more recently Mitochondrion and Chthe’ilist. With this latest album, the band’s songwriting reaches a new plateau in technicality and over-the-top dynamics, along with the innovative production and sound of producer/engineer Arthur Rizk (Prurient, Pissgrave, Inquisition, Black Twilight Circle, Power Trip). Wife is the solo electronic music project of multi-instrumentalist producer James Kelly, also known as the mastermind behind forward-thinking acclaimed post-black metal band Altar Of Plagues. Starting with the Stoic EP in 2012 via Left_blank, Wife signed with respected electronic music label Tri-Angle Records (The Haxan Cloak, Forest Swords, Evian Christ, etc.) for his debut full length What’s Between in 2014 (co-produced by The Haxan Cloak). A more song-oriented, electronic-pop affair, that album quickly established Kelly as a producer of note alongside his aforementioned peers, while he subsequently became more active on the live circuit. With Standard Nature, Kelly has created a bridge between What’s Between and the more experimental aura of his first EP. The result is the best produced material yet—heavy, cacophonous, more intense and dynamic sounds layer through meticulously crafted electronics, samples and beats.

Having established themselves as one of the most notable progressive and unique instrumental metal bands since their inception more than 15 years ago, NY-based powertrio Dysrhythmia mirrors the definition of their moniker. Comprised of Kevin Hufnagel (guitars), Colin Marston (bass), and Jeff Eberon (drums), the band has, over six albums, shown the ultimate in musical fortitude with wondrous, jaw-dropping compositions that go beyond jazz-infused, avant-garde technical extreme metal. Hufnagel and the ever prolific Marston also now comprise one-half of the legendary Gorguts and were specifically recruited by Gorguts mastermind Luc Lemay when he resurrected the technical death metal wonder several years ago. With their new album The Veil Of Control, Dysrhythmia’s first since 2012’s Profound Lore debut Test Of Submission (previous albums on Relapse Records), they have once again created a new expression within their mind-blasting repertoire — Hufnagel solely using a 12-string guitar on this latest — that will go unparalleled in instrumental progressive metal, proving once again they are an untouchable entity.

In the wake of that album, they toured with bands such as Boris, Deafheaven, and Cult Of Luna, also playing prominent festivals like Roadburn, Hellfest, Southwest Terror Fest, along with many others. With this latest album, Subrosa has crafted their most triumphant and biggest release to date. For This We Fought The Battle Of Ages is their masterpiece and establishes them as one of the most important American heavy metal bands today.

Stranger To Violence
LP | 2016 | US | Original (Profound Lore)
25,99 €*
Release:2016 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
With their sophomore album Stranger To Violence, Psalm Zero takes the aesthetics, poetics, and spirit established on their 2014 debut The Drain, and blows up those elements into an epic work of wide-screen drama. It has been two years since that debut, and, in the interim, a series of video and cassette singles called the Birthright Trilogy has built up anticipation for songwriter / vocalist / producer Charlie Looker’s next release. Based in Queens, New York, Psalm Zero provides pummeling drum machine, swirling synths, razor-sharp guitar (courtesy of former member Andrew Hock), and grinding bass as a backdrop for Looker’s crooning baritone voice. Psalm Zero’s unique brand of art-metal has been compared to Godflesh, Katatonia, and Depeche Mode. While Stranger To Violence retains Psalm Zero’s extreme roots, the soaring choruses and massive pop hooks on these seven songs are more emotionally direct than any of the band’s previous work. Harsh vocals are less frequent and reserved for the highest ecstatic peaks. The production style has evolved dramatically as well—in contrast to the band’s original murkier, more lo-fi texture, this album delivers a far crisper, more detailed landscape of synths, samples, and percussive electronics. Psalm Zero has also expanded lyrically, with Looker moving beyond the personal and existential into a more social, global, real-world critical engagement. The new record is tied together by several themes: drug addiction, global financial crisis, Western imperialism, and Jewish identity. The single “Not Guilty” features a video directed by Zev Deans (whose many other credits include Portal and Behemoth), filmed around the alleyways and courthouses of the band’s hometown of New York. Stranger To Violence is a monolithic, cinematic, musical experience, blurring genre boundaries. As demented as it is socially relevant, this album will bring together fans from across multiple different scenes and orientations, further proving that there is nothing out there like Psalm Zero.

With unique dark ambient / rhythmic noise elements, the trio was described as a mix of Public Enemy and My Bloody Valentine. Their singular sound was documented on four milestone albums released on Mike Patton’s Ipecac Recordings imprint, alongside live actions supporting the likes of Tool and Melvins and collaborative works with artists such as Faust, before the group ceased regular activities in 2011. In the spring of 2015, mastermind MC Dälek (a.k.a. Will Brooks) revived the project with the blessing of ex-member / co-producer Oktopus. Featuring new members DJ rEk and Mike Swarmbots, Dälek presents their newest release and first proper full-length since 2009’s Gutter Tactics. America’s most prominent noise figure, Dominick Fernow has for the better part of two decades helped shape and reinvent the genre with a stream of works under the Prurient moniker. A project unlike any other in the realms of experimental, ambient and noise, Prurient continually mutates from one incarnation to the next. Fernow often treads a fine line between harsh noise extremity and atmospheric beauty—his massive, layered walls of sound may be comprised of piercing feedback, tortured vocals and machine-like industrial pounding, or incorporate meticulous sampling, entrancing beats and waves of electronica—yet his prolific output is never less than compelling. Prurient’s first full-length since the 2011 game-changer Bermuda Drain sees Fernow deliver the project’s most ambitious release to date. A sprawling album clocking in at just under 90 minutes, Frozen Niagara Falls is the result of over a year of work. Texas-based musical contingent Pyramids emerged seemingly out of nowhere with their self-titled debut LP released by Hydra Head Records in 2008. Drawing on elements of shoegaze, black metal, ambient / drone, avant-garde and industrial, the record generated massive amounts of buzz and acclaim within experimental and extreme metal circles. The band followed its release by collaborating with Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer), Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), Albin Julius (Der Blutharsch) and Colin Marston (Gorguts / Krallice / Dysrhythmia), and releasing albums with Nadja, Horseback and Mamiffer. A Northern Meadow is Pyramids’ proper follow-up to their lauded 2008 debut. Joining the basic lineup of R. Loren, M. Dean, M. Craig and D. Willaim is Marston, Vindsval (Blut Aus Nord) and William Fowler Collins. This ensemble stretches the Pyramids sound even further into grand and epic realms. Heavy in atmosphere and ambience, it is their most stunning offering yet—dark, dreamy and lush while at the same time claustrophobic, mechanically crawling and surgically cold.

The trio incorporates influences ranging from avant-garde dissonant black metal (Ved Buens Ende, Deathspell Omega), neo-classical, jazz and progressive metal, and while they are often associated with the American black metal movement, they defy categorization. With the addition of Krallice bassist / vocalist Nicholas McMaster to the band’s ranks, Castevet pushes their songwriting and artistry to a new level. Sophomore album Obsian paints an even denser, more complex sonic picture than their acclaimed Mounds of Ash debut, with a musical fortitude far beyond their contemporaries in the American black / extreme metal scene.
