The music contained in this album invokes the vibes and spirit that were so crucial to much of the music recorded during the 1960’s & 70’s in Jamaica. If you talk to the musicians and singers of this era, they will tell you that the driving force behind the songs they created was the sheer love of music. This is one of the reasons these recordings are so powerful and move listeners to this day. Music like this can only be made by those who were schooled in the studios and yards around Kingston and is not something that can be easily reproduced outside Jamaica. The Kingston All Stars represent some of the most legendary musicians to ever grace the little island & it is thanks to their passion and dedication that we have a lifetime of music to enjoy.

Some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as Dub Surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. The Lost Future was recorded at the former Amsterdam Film Academy where Dub Surgeon. The recording engineer for the project was Ricardo Villalobos.Dub surgeon and Ricardo Villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. Then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. The master copy was thought to have been lost forever.Dub Surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two EPs on Future Dub in 2002/3. But one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of The Lost Future. "Pay attention to this," it said.Attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on Dubai's Ark to Ashes, which is named in homage to the story of Lee "Scratch" Perry burning down his Black Ark studio to rid it of demons.Sounding as fresh as ever, The Lost Future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Ranking Dread was as much of a myth and enigma as he was a music man and badman. But today he remains the connoisseur’s Dee Jay, admired for his slick style and delivery and compared to other noteworthy DJs of the time, can be seen as crucially under-recorded, having only released 4 albums and a handful of singles in his recording career. Born in 1956 in the Kingston slum of Rema, Dread spent his early career divided between being an enforcer for the JLP as well as learning his trade as a toaster on local sound systems. Trouble with the law instigated his move to London where his recording career began. Girls Fiesta is Ranking Dread’s first album, originally released in 1978 and contains some tough Linval Thompson rhythms taken from various Linval productions, notably his “Love Is The Question” album. This album stands at the crossroads of the Dee Jay phenomenon linking the eras between the might of I Roy and U Roy and the Dancehalls ruled by the Roots Radics rhythms. This is Rub A Dub at its finest. After the early 80s Dread’s recording career faded away as he got swept away into a serious life of crime - see the sleeve notes for an eye opening account of Dread’s life. This is the first ever reissue of Girls Fiesta on LP and is licensed directly from Linval Thompson. Rhythms laid down at Channel One Studios by Sly & Robbie (among others)and Dread’s material voiced at Chalk Farm Studios, Camden, engineered by Sid Bucknor.

Release:1983 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
With most of his catalogue increasingly hard to find, and demanding high prices, this is the first time that “Twelve Tribe Of Israel” sees a reissue. This release includes dub versions of ”Unseen Eye” and “Tell Me”, and the extended mixes of “Mr. Spaulding” and “Twelve Tribe Of Israel”, not featured on the original LP. Mr Spaulding aka Renford Ferguson from Clarendon Jamaica, recorded this, his only album at the age of 19, at Aquarius Studios, in Half-Way-Tree, Kingston, Jamaica. It was released in 1983 on the Roots Rockers label, this is an almost exclusive excursion in voice, drum and bass with only the faintest hint of guitar and discordant organ, an album of pure minimalist reggae with deep dancehall sensibilities. Containing an amalgamation of UK and Jamaica recorded rhythms, the LP has some of the lowest bass frequencies this side of Western Kingston. A graduate of the King Stur Gav sound system Spaulding's fine vocals suggest a talent that should have become much bigger, now it’s time.

Super Star-Disco Rockers
LP | 2018 | EU | Original (Pressure Sounds)

Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
First re-press since its original release. When The Skatalites splintered after Don Drummond’s arrest for murder, McCook led The Supersonics for Duke Reid in the rocksteady and early reggae years, before becoming the pre-eminent horns arranger of the roots era. Having already fallen under the spell of John Coltrane’s free jazz, Tommy had found a deeper meditational mood in the percussive rhythms of Count Ossie’s Rastafarian drummers, and he brought this spiritual dimension into the militant rockers sound of the late 1970s. McCook recorded extensively for Bunny Lee, and ‘Super Star Disco Rockers’, released in 1977, is a strong showcase for his meditational style of playing. The track ‘Lamb’s Bread Herb’, a reworked version of Yabby You’s ‘Death Trap’ with an overdubbed ‘steppers’ drum pattern, is a mystical highlight. Bunny Lee: “When Tommy join up with Bobby Ellis on trumpet, that is when he develop what we call his ‘far east’ sound. And especially when he play flute like on ‘Death Trap’ it give it that ‘far east’ sound. Or sometimes Tommy play clarinet for a different flavour. But mostly he play the tenor sax with that deeper, lower tone, like on ‘Tommy’s Rocking Vibration’ – hear that big horn there!” Other tracks include two cuts of Frankie Jones tunes, (‘African Jumpers’ and ‘The Night Rose Of Sherron’, both popular cuts with Fatman’s sound system) and instrumental versions of Johnny Clarke and Cornell Campbell songs. Several tunes feature the higher alto sax of Lennox Brown alongside Tommy’s tenor, and two tracks actually feature Lennox Brown alone. ‘Super Star Disco Rockers’, originally released on Dynamic Sounds’ Weed Beat label, was overdubbed and mixed at King Tubby’s Studio, where Bunny would line up the horns players in a spirit of healthy competition. Featuring, among others: Sly & Robbie, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Tony Chin, Ansell Collins, Ossie Hibbert, Bobby Ellis & Lennox Brown.

A prodigy of the Alpha boys school, Owen Gray delivers a heartfelt roots vocal on a rhythm most likely supplied by Sly Dunbar and Lloyd Parks. This is a top tune and Phil Pratt's production is sympathetic to Owen Grays voice. The rhythm was remixed at London’s Easy street studio and used on the ‘War is on dub style’ set. There is a distinct Roots Radics feel to the rhythm, and the veteran Owen Gray handles it perfectly. A classic that is well worthy of being re-issued: ‘Why did you kill your brother for a dollar’ as appropriate now as it was when it was released. Bobby Kalphat makes an appearance on melodica in the second half of the track. Comes in a Pressure Sounds house bag.

Ronnie Davis’ version is an update that was recoded in Jamaica with Sly and Robbie as the rhythm section. These songs were remixed in the UK as dubs for ‘The War is On Dub Style’ set. Highly sought after dub album, that has not been available since its original release in the early 1980s. In the early 1980s, one London recording studio became the favoured hang-out for visiting Jamaican producers and British reggae musicians alike. Easy Street Studios in Bethnal Green had humble beginnings, but was soon pouring out an impressive run of hit tunes by artists like Sugar Minott, Winston Reedy, Alton Ellis and Barrington Levy. Founded by Eddy ‘Eddyman’ Williams, the studio soon recruited a team of local eastenders, like Dean ‘Joe 90’ Richards, Mike Stephenson, Jeff Chandler and Stuart Breed, who became known as the Easy Street Crew. Phil Pratt had an illustrious career in Jamaica stretching back to the rocksteady years of the 60s, scoring huge hits such as ‘My Heart Is Gone’ and ‘Artibella’, but by the 80s he was increasingly finishing his productions in London. Easy Street was a low budget studio with professional but fairly limited equipment – a Soundcraft TS24 mixing desk, a Roland RE301 Chorus Echo, an AKG BX5 reverb, and an MXR flanger/doubler – and a speedy way of working which suited the incoming rush of reggae producers. ‘The War Is On Dub Style’ is an album that typifies Phil’s working methods in those days, with the backing tracks recorded at Joe Gibbs’ Studio in Jamaica, and overdubs and mixing done in London. By the mid 80s Easy Street was scoring further successes with homegrown lovers’ rock and deejay tunes, and to support their breakthrough acts the Easy Street Crew started to go out on the road and into concert venues and dancehalls.

Lee Perry first came to prominence working withCoxsone Dodd’s fabled Studio One. This is whereScratch earned the nickname with the wildlypopular Jamaican hit record and dance craze“Chicken Scratch.” After a fall out with Dodd, Perrymoved on to a stint with Joe Gibb’s Amalgamated.Again in a dispute over compensation Perry movedon to form his own label, Upsetter and establishedhis house band, the Upsetters.By 1973 Perry had also established Black Ark, arecording studio of his own that functioned as aneffective fertilizer throughout what was Jamaica'smost innovative period for sounds and recordingtechniques. In that year, as Perry and Black Arkentered a period of heavy dub output, Scratchrecorded Cloak And Dagger. This early dub outingis a testament to Perry’s lo-fi mastery ashe utilized his TEAC four-track, Soundcraft board, tape delays, phasers, reverb and any otherambient sounds he could get this hands on as aninstrument rather than just to record instruments.Get On Down celebrates a piece of reggae historyand one of Lee Perry’s crowning achievements withthis reissue of Cloak And Dagger, presented hereas originally issued in Jamaica in 1973.

Mastered by Sam at Precise. Deadbeat graced ZamZam with a release in our very first year of operation. Lending his name & gravitas to our young effort with ZamZam06 meant a lot to us at the time, and is something we never forgot, so we couldn’t be happier to have him back for a second outing. Canadian by birth, now residing in Berlin, Scott Monteith is known the world over as one of the most adventurous and reliable producers in the areas of techno and dub-inflected electronic music. Extremely tight quality control over multiple full length albums and countless singles on seminal labels including ~scape, Echochord, and his own flawless BLKRTZ have made him a household name in dub techno and beyond. Deadbeat’s second ZamZam sets aside obvious techno constraints for a mid-tempo reggae scorcher that sounds like it was beamed straight from the humid & heady glory days of the Black Ark studio. Anchored by a tar-thick bassline recalling Lee Perry’s “Dub Organizer,” “Wail Ball and Cry” leans hard into its rockstone drum kit, with whip-sharp turnarounds, clattering Binghi drums, melodica stabs and restrained yet ever-present flange and reverb keeping the atmosphere swampy and sparkling. A sweet falsetto intones on the loneliness and alienation we all navigate in these times of political debasement and (social) media spectacle.

Mastered by Sam at Precise. We at ZamZam have long been fans of Schlachthofbronx’s genre-smashing club tracks that harness and hybridize bass music styles from Germany, UK, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, and beyond. But when we heard the dark dub of last year’s “Blurred Vision” we knew we had to reach out. Little did we know the duo was already into ZamZam, paving the way to an eagerly anticipated release championed on dubplate by selectors from The Bug to O.B.F. to Toddla T. The Munich pair's ZamZam pushes a sound that's intutive and familiar, yet unlike anything else out there. Schlachthofbronx have carved out an absolutely unique and steely-eyed take on punishing dubwise informed not only by post-punk, house, electro, industrial, and traditional dub reggae principles, but by the legendary 60,000 watt Elemental Wave rig they host their Blurred Vision night on. Imagine an alternative musical universe where PIL, Mad Professor, and Basic Channel hole up in the Batcave for a pitch-black sound system rave and you’re getting the picture.

Reggae developed its own alternative industry with the support of sound systems and gave opportunities to so many deejays, toaster and singers. In Brasil, with the rise of sound systems inspired by the UK and JA scene, Monkey Jhayam was one of the first artists to express his art and also build a solid and prominent career alongside many sound systems in his country. Out of São Mateus, Monkey broke barriers and has been collaborating with producers from all over the world with his uplifting Portuguese message.

Bristol's finest reggae producer meets Doncaster's number one dancehall MC as Mr Benn & Parly B join forces for an EP chock full of vibes. First up "Gwarn Go Bathe" is a cautionary tale of lacking personal hygene in the dance underpinned by a bubbling dancehall riddim. "Heat Up" is much of the same as things get hotter, whilst "Session Cork" slows things down a little with some more laid back vibes. Despite working on various remixes together, this is the first time Mr Benn and Parly B have worked in a combination - hopefully the first of many more to come!

Originally released in 1979 "Jah Love Is With I" is a long sought-after and highly collectible 12-inch single with two tracks which are presented in the extended 'discomix' style of the late 70s, with the vocals edited directly into an extended dub mix on each side. Side A features the 6:28 minutes extended version of "Jah Love Is With I" and side B has the 5:52 minutes version of "Bad Days Are Going"!Among the ranks of singers, only Johnny Clarke comes close to challenging Bob Marley & Dennis Brown for reggae's crown, through his unequaled run of hit songs. His output of mid-70s classics powered by producer Bunny "Striker" Lee give Clarke status among the top artists of the period, and he mainstains contemporary relevance on the live show and reggae festival circuit.

Dennis Alcapone was one of the first sound system deejays to rise to island-wide prominence, following the incredible success of U Roy’s fluid toasting style, which took Jamaica by storm during the late 1960s. Alcapone, who was born Dennis Smith in the country town of Culloden in Westmoreland, southwestern Jamaica, first made an impact on a sound system called El Paso, based in the rough-n-ready west Kingston district of Waltham Park. Initial recordings for Keith Hudson were strictly underground, but an album for Studio One and popular work for Duke Reid significantly boosted his profile. Dennis Alcapone worked closely with hitmaking producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee from the early 1970s, establishing a friendship that has lasted to the present day; Investigator Rock, which dates from 1977, sees the toaster riding Striker’s rockers-styled hits, voiced by the likes of Cornell Campbell, John Holt, and Johnny Clarke.

LP | 1981 | US | Reissue (Get On Down)

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Prince Far I aka the Voice Of Thunder got his start in the burgeoning Jamaican music industry as a sound system DJ (for Sir Mike The Musical Dragon), working security at Joe Gibbs’ stuido and in a similar roll at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. As fate would have it, King Stitt, the regular DJ at Studio One, failed to turn up to voice a track and the up and commer convinced Coxsone to give him a try on the mic. The resulting cut launched the career of one of Reggae’s most famous toasters – though he liked to describe his style as a chanter rather than the more popular term toaster. First releasing records using the moniker King Cry Cry, the same name he’d used working Sir Mike’s sound system, he soon changed his name to Prince Far I at the suggestion of producer Enos McLeod. On Voice Of Thunder, Prince Far I is supported by an extremely sparse yet heavy instrumental backing which perfectly compliments his growling voice. As is often the case with Prince Far I, much of the material is essentially Bible verse, “Ten Commandments” being a perfect example. The Voice Of Thunder full length also includes a tribute to the very recently deceased Bob Marley, and he even takes time to take UK skinheads to task for wearing polyster (forbidden to a real rastafarian). Long out of print on vinyl, this 1981 masterpiece from Prince Far I is back in effect thanks to Get On Down.

The 100th release on Pressure Sounds is the brilliant set of I Mo Jah's ‘Rockers from the Land of Reggae’ and ‘Words in Dub’, as two single vinyl releases, and a double cd. It's surprising that these two albums have not been re-released before, as both albums are seriously sought after. There will be 3 bonus tracks on each of the CDs. The albums come with full sleevenotes with excellent sound quality. The CD pack includes a full package with graphics and the usual high quality annotation and mastering. _____ . ______Notes for the two albums:A contemporary of Ras Michael & the Sons of Negus, Eric Donaldson and Freddie McKay, Philip Fullwood started out composing for Studio One and playing percussion for Burning Spear. Both "Rockers from the Land of Reggae" and "Words in Dub" were backed by Sly & Robbie, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Clive "Azul" Hunt, Bingy Bunny and Flabba Holt, among others. The striking sleeve of "Rockers...", in black and white with green handwritten typography, told the story of Jamaica, with Arawaks overseeing the arrival of Christopher Columbus’ ship Santa Maria, whilst between two sound systems the dreads were dancing and smoking a spliff under a tree. The art was drawn by Magnus Johnstone, a painter and deejay who presented the radio show ‘Reggae Mukasa’ on WMBR, and would later become the foremost champion of the burgeoning hip hop scene in Boston.“When I made "Rockers from the Land of Reggae" I was taking about 500 to Jamaica and I was told I had to have a license to go through the customs. I got fed up and I just leave the album with them. They wanted me to get a license and all them things, and I said ‘Why I want a license to bring my own thing to Jamaica?’. They said no, so I leave them at customs. I don’t know what happened to them. Maybe they sell them. And that was the end of it. I give the rest of them to Chin Randy’s in Jamaica Queens to distribute.”And so "Rockers from the Land of Reggae" soon vanished into obscurity. By 1983 Phillip Fullwood had settled permanently in the US and virtually retired from music. Over the years, partly fuelled by its extreme rarity, the album’s reputation has grown immensely, and original copies now command a very high price. Phillip is thrilled that this reissue will now expose it to a wider audience.“Life happen that way. I got kids and grandkids. I’m just a small guy who was with Spear and just tried to do my thing, like everybody else in the entertainment biz. My occupation, my passport you know says entertainer. Wishing a t’ing, yunno.”"Words in Dub", the highly unique set, released in a stark hand-printed sleeve, comprised self-produced rhythm tracks and some donated by friends, such as ‘Africa Rock’, a dub of ‘See Dem Da’ (Jah Marcus Roots 7”) by Burning Spear, with member Rupert Wellington on lead vocals. The first side also featured dubs of Purple Lights’ ‘Pestilence’, fronted by the singer Bangie, and ‘Revolution’ by Jah Blue & The Originals, who included Winston Rodney’s brother. ‘Reorganize The Race (Marcus Say)’, with its dense layers of digital reverb in the intro, later features singing about ‘weeping and wailing’ also by Jah Blue & The Originals, though the vocal cut was never released. Several rhythms would later get a do-over by Phillip’s American-based group I-Mo-Jah, perhaps the most thrilling being ‘Jah Say Love’, rerecorded by I-Mo-Jah as ‘Peace & Love’. ‘Hotter Fire In Babylon’ is a dub of Burning Spear’s ‘Spear Burning’ (Spear 7”), and the album closes with ‘Bubbling’, a dub of ‘Maybe’ (Yah Congo 12”) recorded by Phillip’s long-time friend Eric Donaldson. The original recordings were primarily laid at Channel One with Barnabas and Crucial Bunny at the mixing board, with ‘Hotter Fire In Babylon’ recorded at Randy’s by Chin Randy himself, and ‘Bubbling’ at Dynamic Studio. The final dub mixes were done at Channel One and also at the legendary Black Ark by Phillip Fullwood’s own hands.

With their new release the Dub-Up crew teams up with their longtime friend & collaborator Unlisted Fanatic. Unlisted Fanatic is a Belgium based reggae & dub producer with plenty of quality releases under his belt. On the A side you can find the very first solo release of Brazilian-Belgian singer Juli Jupter, whom you might know as lead singer of the Spellbreakers (Check out their first 12” if you don’t know them yet!). She delivers an uplifting positive message which floats nicely on Unlisted Fanatic’s powerful riddim. To top off the A side, the vocal is followed by an excellent horns cut by the Moonshine Horns, the trumpet & saxophone duo that often works with Unlisted Fanatic. On the AA side, you can find Prince Livijah with a tuff lyrical roots message ‘Content of Character’. After the success of the first Dub-Up Release ‘Red Alert’, it was only logical we continued the fruitful collaboration with Prince Livijah. The tune is followed by a deep dub version by Unlisted Fanatic, hands on mixed from the desk! All this musical niceness is pressed on a heavy 12” 45RPM record. Played as dubplate by sounds like Jah Youth & King Shiloh Soundsystem the past months!

A fresh iteration of the mid-eighties LP (itself a compilation of recordings from the previous five years or so), replacing two tracks — Dancing In The Rain and All Things — with their full 12” versions. This is a deeply personable, expert, limber blend of roots and lovers, kicking off with an exclusive mix of the deadly Mash Down Babylon; dropping classic, lush, spaced-out Wackies dub science to close; and taking in reworkings of Lickshot, Billie Jean and The Righteous Flames’ I Was Born To Be Loved, along the route. The moniker 'Chosen Brothers’ is Lloyd Barnes’ spiritual way of sharing the credit for his solo projects. "Anyone in the studio at the time could be a Chosen Brother,” he says. In this case a full crew includes Sugar Minott and Prince Douglas at the desk; Jah Batta, Milton Henry, Wayne Jarrett and Junior Delahaye all on backing vocals; and such dream-team Bullwackies instrumentalists as Clive Hunt, Jerry Johnson, Fabian Cooke and Ras Menelik.

Stone classic Bullwackies (as excursioned by Rhythm & Sound for Burial Mix), sensationally featuring two unreleased dubs, newly extracted from the master reels. Both are equally unmissable but quite different, with contrasting effects: the second dub adds ninety seconds, including whip-dem spring reverb. Drawn from the Selective Showcase LP, the vocal mix is more open and dubwise than the Sing & Shout LP offering, with less keyboards.Asked whether it should be mash or march, after some pondering Bullwackies replied: "That’s a good question.
