During the mid-1970s, the Aggrovators could do no wrong. This ace team of session musicians that was forged as an off-shoot of the Soul Syndicate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade, recorded with Bunny Lee’s rising stars, such as Johnnie Clarke and his rival, Cornell Campbell. Following on from the great Shalom Dub set of 1975, Rasta Dub ’76 is another truly magnificent dub set culled from Aggrovators hits (by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell and others); this time, the entire album was given a scintillating mix-down at King Tubby’s studio by the great Prince Jammy, and the sonic excellence has stood the test of time. Another must-have for all connoisseurs of dub.

UK legends Brother Culture and Vibronics meet new blood Bukkha and Madplate Sound for a 12” of deep steppers vibrations.Dub-Stuy Records kicks off 2017 in fine style with another heavyweight 12” release that brings together four artists from America, Italy, and England for a transcontinental dub collaboration inspired by Jah Shaka sessions. ‘Obliterate’ sees American producer Bukkha return to the label in collaboration with the Italian duo of Madplate Sound and longstanding UK dub legend Vibronics on remix duty. Brixton-based vocalist and regular Dub-Stuy collaborator B rother Culture provides the vocals. After hearing Dub-Stuy’s first 12”, ‘Back To Africa’, Bukkha was inspired to create something with a similar traditional steppers style. He sent the project to Madplate Sound (a young duo who have released on Moonshine and worked with Italian vocalist Marina P) and together they crafted the ‘Obliterate’ riddim, a deep and meditative track featuring earth-shattering bass and militant snares. Brother Culture then added lyrics that reflect on history and call on listeners to obliterate evil, chase away doubt, and take a proud and strengthening stance. The song is delivered in a classic three-part format with original vocal, vocal dub, and instrumental dub. On the flip side, UK producer Vibronics - who connected with Dub-Stuy after they shared a bill in France - delivers ‘Obliterated Version’, his own three-part reinterpretation of the original, expanding the track further with additional instrumental layers and rousing melodies while keeping the bass pressure high.‘Obliterate’ is a spiritual yet dancefloor-minded 12” that sets the tone for 2017.

Cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular El Paso sound system, based in the Waltham Park area, Dennis Alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following U Roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. Born Dennis Smith in the rural district of Culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western Kingston. Once El Paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer Keith Hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for Studio One and hit material for Duke Reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, Lizzy. Alcapone’s longstanding links with Bunny Lee yielded the excellent Guns Don’t Argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of Lee’s all-time greatest rhythms, including Delroy Wilson’s ‘Better Must Come,’ John Holt’s ‘Left With A Broken Heart’ and Slim Smith’s rendition of the Temptations’ soul classic ‘Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.’

Burro Banton / Rider Shafique / Shanti D / DJ Madd Dub-Stuy’s riddim series returns with a fresh take on a Jah Shaka classicDub-Stuy returns with the second installment of their riddim series in which the Brooklyn-based collective pays homage to the tradition of Jamaican dancehall riddims with a fresh modern twist and versions from an international line-up of vocalists.Following an update of King Jammy’s Punanny riddim on the first release of the series, Dub-Stuy is taking on yet another classic. This time, DJ Madd brings the classic Kunta Kinte riddim into the 21st century with rolling drums, floating percussion, and weighty bass anchoring the timeless and irresistible melody that has come to define the riddim for generations of fans. First brought to the attention of UK dub fans by the mighty Jah Shaka , and originally recorded by a little known band from Battersea, Kunta Kinte has become a staple of dub music’s evolution, with its eponymous flute melody making numerous appearances over the decades in both underground and mainstream hits. For their 2017 edition, Dub-Stuy has brought three different vocalists from Jamaica and Europe to voice the riddim in a positive stance: Kingston legend Burro Banton preaches to the youth on ‘Nah Sell Out’; Rider Shafique, whose unique voice and delivery has been a hallmark of the Bristol scene for the past few years, travels Over The Oceans to celebrate the links between worldwide sound system fans; and finally France’s Shanti D takes a break from his work with OBF to bring it all together Inna Different Style. With Kunta Kinte Riddim 2017, Dub-Stuy takes us on a journey through the history of a famed riddim, connecting both style and sound from past dub sessions to current dancefloors.

Born Roy Samuel Reid in Saint Thomas in 1944, I Roy was one of Jamaica’s all-time greatest deejays. A natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. A former employee at Customs and Excise, he was first active on a sound system called Soul Bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to Son’s Junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary Supreme Ruler of Sound, defecting to the rival Stereo sound system after that. Hits for Harry Mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album Presenting I Roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in London. His longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer Bunny Lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid-1970s; the 1977 set Can’t Conquer Rasta is a superb ‘showcase’-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of Lee’s killer ‘rockers’ rhythms (recorded with the likes of Johnny Clarke), each complete with a corresponding Aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby’s studio.

Keith Rowe and Phillip Tex Dixon, both originally from Kingston, were introduced by a common friend and soon formed a singing group which contained three other friends singing everywhere possible, trying to get the chance to record fresh material. They auditioned for the most important producers at the time in Jamaica like Duke Reid, Prince Buster and Coxsone Dodd, but were not successful as a five-man group, so the group disbanded leaving the duo Keith and Tex.Keith served in the US Army, while Tex worked for the Canadian Government. Keith continued playing the New York scene and also recorded a classic song with Lee “Scratch” Perry titled Groovy Situation. In 1994 they re-joined to play some gigs and to complete an album titled Together Again. That same year Keith started a new radio DJ career with ‘Sounds of the Caribbean’ show, an exciting adventure that lasted nineteen years until his departure for Tampa, Florida. He continues his radio career with his show ‘Reggae Rhapsody’ on Reggae King Radio, an internet radio station by VP Records. Since 2013 they have toured the world, and played some of the most prestigious Reggae/Ska festivals including North America, Europe and Asia. Now, released in 2017, an album composed exclusively with original material, keeping the Rocksteady essence the duet was known for during the golden period from 1967 to 1969. Also included are Ska and Reggae cuts within these 11 tracks. This album proves that Keith and Tex continues their excellence and with the stunning Roberto Sanchez’s production, this new Album is a must for all serious music lovers.

The house band of Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of Jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. The shifting core line-up spun off from the Soul Syndicate and thus typically featured Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and Tony Chin on guitar and Bernard ‘Touter’ Harvey on organ. Carlton ‘Santa’ was the main drummer, but Carlton Barrett of the Wailers band and ‘Benbow’ Creary were sometimes featured. Most crucially, on bass, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett shifted to Fully Fullwood (and occasionally, Earl ‘Bagga’ Walker), until Robbie Shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. The band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took Jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of Cornell Campbell and Johnnie Clarke material mixed at King Tubby’s studio—a must for all serious fans of dub.

The foundation of this dub album was created by some of the finest sessions musicians ever to grace the studios of 1960’s & 70’s Jamaica. Their instruments were the cornerstone to countless Dub LP’s that began to surface in the early 70’s and continued on into the 80’s creating a whole new genre of music. As they did back in the early days of dub, the Kingston All Stars gathered together in Kingston, Jamaica at Mixing Lab Studios and laid down a series of riddims that would lay the groundwork for what comes next: the singers. Both Greenwich Farm rasta, Prince Alla, and falsetto, Cedric Myton of the The Congos, contribute vocals to the album but half of the riddims on this LP are, to date, unreleased, and have yet to be voiced.

The song has been originally recorded by John Holt with his group The Paragons in 1968 on Duke Reid's Duke label and since then it has been covered by numerous other reggae artists including Dennis Brown, UB40 and Horace Andy, becoming a massive hit thanks to Andy's more recent version with trip-hop superstars Massive Attack in their album “Mezzazine”. On the flip side you'll find the rock steady scorcher “Austerity Skank” that has already gained support on the airwaves by reagge ambassadords David Rodigan and Don Letts. In their first 10 years Pama Int'l recorded 9 albums, 3 BBCRadio 1 Maida Vale sessions, won the Rebel playlist on BBC6, and became the first new act to sign to Trojan Records in 30 years. Crucial heavyweights Poldoore and Emapea each take on a side of this Cold Busted 7-inch single, the latest in a bi-monthly series of Dub / Reggae cuts exhumed from the label’s golden vault. Belgium’s Poldoore commandeers the A-side with an instrumental version of ”This Road“, a track originally found on his acclaimed 2016 album “The Day After”. Stirringly dubwise, the cut is wet with atmosphere and the ping of spring reverb, as a tuneful horn section carries the main melody. Flip the wax for accomplished Polish beat-maker Emapea and his delightfully skankin’ ”Rudeboy“. Previously appearing on the In Dub 3 compilation, “Rudeboy" showcases Emapea’s knack for combining samples from multiple genres into one cohesive, steamy gumbo. With either track, B-boys and natty dreads alike will give the dance floor a serious workout as the needle meets the vinyl.

The Skatalites brought the sound of Jamaica to the world. At the start of the 1960s, in the space of just a couple of years Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Johnny ‘Dizzy’ Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett and others defined the exciting beat of ‘Ska’ as the sound of newly independent Jamaica. As the house band at Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s newly launched Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road, the group comprising the finest jazz musicians on the island played on literally 1000s of recordings – Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and The Maytals, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis and many, many more.During their existence (1963-65) The Skatalites also recorded 100s of their own songs, released either under their own name, or The Studio One Orchestra, or that of band members Drummond, McCook etc. This is the first collection on Soul Jazz Records to bring you some of their finest material – from classics such as ‘Guns of Navarone’, ‘El Pussy Cat Ska’, ‘Christine Keeler’ through to some serious rarities such as Dizzy Johnny and The Studio One Orchestra’s ‘Sudden Destruction’ and Don Drummond’s ‘Coolie Boy’.The Skatalites’ ska sound brought together aspects of jazz, latin, rhythm and blues, proto-Rastafarianism (tracks such as ‘Full Dread’, ‘Beardsman Ska’) and more. The intensity and energy of their sound was matched by the experimentation of the troubled genius of Don Drummond whose ‘far east’ modal trombone sound added a complex melancholy to the music of the Skatalites (the group split-up after Drummond was charged with murdering his wife, dancer Margarita Mahfood). This album was originally released as a limited-edition Record Store Day collectors 7-inch box set (now deleted) and is now available for the first time as a double LP edition, CD and digital release complete with 10 extra bonus tracks and new extensive sleeve notes.

Captain Ganja and the Space Patrolis one of the most singular dub albums that barely saw the light of day. A conscious effort to create a new breed of dub centred that around the cosmic synths and keys of Paul Thompson. Making use of an early Roland sampler, Tradition broke away from the standard drum / bass workouts that ruled the day. With the Captain, dub becomes an atmosphere, a feeling, not a formula - littered with babies cries, tribal chants, radiophonic noodlings and library soundtracks for space-age bachelor pads.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2017!U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to branching out Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American genre in its infancy: rapping. On “Dread In A Babylon”, his third full-length, he stretches out over traditional roots grooves provided by the Soul Syndicate and Skin, Flesh & Bones bands, riffing on topics including love (“Runaway Girl,” a 1975 single released in the UK on Virgin Records); the Bible (“The Great Psalms”); walking the straight and narrow (“Listen To The Teacher”); and even his take on governmental policy goals (“Chalice In The Palace”). The album finishes with an instrumental version of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Trench Town Rock,” for good measure. U-Roy’s style and charisma are always on display, and – as with all of his classic records – the groove rules all. Presented on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious, ganja-drenched cover art, it’s the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in Jamaican musical history.

Hailing “Experimental Dub Music from the Far East” as their concept, a Japanese label New Dub Hall established in 2017 welcomes their first release in a 7" vinyl by UNDEFINED, a dub unit consisting of drums and keyboards. This is the first release launched from a dub unit UNDEFINED formed by Sahara (keyboards and programming /ex THE HEAVYMANNERS) and Ohkuma (drums/SOUL DIMENSION). Feel the mirage of piano echoing throughout the reverberant sounds and noises created by analog instruments on side-A, coupled with a deepened minimal dub of mystic melody overlapped with repeating drum fill tight and cut down to its extreme on side-B.

Brand New 2017 Recut - finally available on Vinyl for the First time. 2LP+Mp3 in full Original Coverart. The legendary movie soundstrack based out of Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. The sixteenth release on the Moll-Selekta label shares its title with a wonderful film, a heartwarming homage to the golden age of rocksteady. It documents the recordings being made for this very album at the Tuff Gong studios, Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. Excerpts from an all star reunion concert staged in Kingston and older archive material complete the picture. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, its sound embraced by western popular music, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Under the musical direction of Ernest Ranglin, a guitarist of considerable renown not only on the reggae circuit, but also on the jazz scene, mixed by legendary engineer Errol Brown - in Duke Reid’s employ at the Treasure Isle studio in the sixties - and freshly arranged by Lynn Taitt.

‘In Time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer Wrongtom and Hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle MC’s the Ragga Twins. ‘In Time’ strips back the jungle, D&B, garage sound that the Ragga Twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. Throughout the record, the Ragga Twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. Wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene. The vinyl release comes as a 12”+7” package, all housed in full colour sleeve. Album download card also includes upfront ‘In Dub’ version of the album, these dub versions will only be available on the vinyl download card for the moment, until officially being released later in the year.
