More To Say Versions

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
The Frightnrs’ modern classic, Nothing More To Say, masterfully reimagined by producer extraordinaire, Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah. These are the dub versions. It’s rare for a debut album, especially one in such a polarizing genre like Reggae, to garner the kind of universal fanfare The Frighntrs’ 2016 long player Nothing More To Say received. Mainly because it’s a record that transcends genre specific qualifiers and rhetoric that pigeonhole many albums. It is in the truest sense of the phrase, a great record. Shortly after its release a single for Dispute (a featured track) was pressed, and like many classic reggae singles, it included a Dub (version) on the B-Side (courtesy of famed reggae producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod). The single was a smash success which in return inspired Axelrod to produce Dub versions for all the songs on Nothing More To Say. The result?! “More To Say” Versions: A fresh take on a modern classic that needs to be heard. This isn’t a repackaging of some remixed material. Each song has been lovingly deconstructed and reimagined by Victor Axelrod - resulting in a wholly original piece of art that is a must for fans of the Frightnrs and Soulful music in general. Limited to 3000 copies and sporting psychedelic 3-D cover art (custom Frightnrs 3-D glasses included) - these puppies will not stay in stock long. Grab ‘em while you can! Don’t make us say “I told you so!”

Black Man’s Pride is the striking new Studio One collection of deep righteous reggae, featuring Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, The Gladiators, Sugar Minott, The Heptones, Freddie McGregor, Cedric Brooks & more. While the righteousness of blackness is at the heart of the Rastafarian faith, this collection illustrates how black pride remained a central theme, if not the defining essence, at the very core of all the music created at Studio One Records under the direction of Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd.In order to understand the centrality of black identity in the music created at Studio One, we need look no further than Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd who created the first black-owned record company in Jamaica. In similar fashion Alton Ellis’s defining ‘Black Man’s Pride’ brings up emotions that are at the heart of many of these uplifting songs. Alton Ellis’ birthplace was the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, also the birthplace of The Wailers, Ken Boothe and many other Studio One luminaries.Clement Dodd established a musical empire firmly rooted by the core musicians working at Studio One, many of whom came out of the Alpha School for Wayward Boys, essentially an orphanage run by Roman Catholic nuns, whose luminaries include Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, Cedric Brooks, Vin Gordon, Tommy McCook & more. Many of the songs featured here come from the transitory phase in reggae at the start of the 1970s, after the exhilaration of Ska and following the cooling down of Rocksteady. While reggae awaited the arrival of roots, Studio One’s vocalists were already producing some of the moodiest music imaginable! Here are 18 heavyweight tunes, both classic cuts and super-rare tunes!

This is Soul Jazz Records’ latest new collection of classic and rare Studio One recordings. By the 1970s Studio One and Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in Reggae for almost two decades. From running the Downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of Kingston in the late 1950s to opening Studio One at 13 Brentford Road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in Ska and Rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of Jamaica’s artists – everyone from Bob Marley and The Wailers, Ken Boothe, Toots and The Maytals, The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo and more – Clement Dodd had until this point dominated the Jamaican musical world. And yet, incredibly, Clement Dodd was barely half way through his musical path, maintaining Studio One’s number one position in the Jamaican music scene throughout the 1970s with a combination of musical and creative innovation and an endless capacity to adapt and create new musical fashions. By the end of the 1970s Dancehall had become the defining sound on the island. Dancehall was essentially a tribute by other Jamaican producers and artists to the classic music of Studio One created in the 1960s as young artists across the island created new songs, while musicians recreated these original classic foundation Studio One rhythms. As on other occasions, Clement Dodd rose to this new musical challenge by producing a whole new era of classics for Studio One.The roots of Dancehall begin with the DJs of the early 1970s, who were the first to sing new material over earlier classic rhythms. Early DJ pioneers such as Dillinger and Prince Jazzbo both feature here toasting over classic songs - The Mad Lad’s Ten to One and The Eternals’ Queen of the Minstrel. But it is the new wave of artists who arrived at Studio One at the onset of Dancehall which enabled Studio One to maintain its number one status as the whole of Kingston’s rival music producers – Channel One, Joe Gibbs and many others – attempted to challenge this position. Sugar Minott, Michigan and Smiley, Willie Williams, Lone Ranger had all grown up listening to the classic Studio One music of the 1960s and were able to pay the greatest compliment to the label by creating the defining new music of this new era with songs that combined all the musical and technological developments of the 1970s – dub, deejaying, discomixes, syndrums, synthesizers and more – into the sound of the future: Dancehall.Throughout this era Clement Dodd also continued to work with a number of original and returning artists – such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne – updating old rhythms and creating new ones while employing the in-house band variously known as The Brentford All-Stars/Rockers/Disco Set to update these sounds in order to maintain Studio One’s number one position as the defining force in Reggae.

Emotional Rescue and Jamwax come together to present the first of three essential 12's from NY/Jamaican label Capo Disco, all officially licensed and remastered for the first time. The brainchild of reggae vocalist, musician, producer and label owner Glen Adams, the label married disco with his Caribbean roots to perfection. TIP! Born and raised in Jamaica, Adams story is a similar one to the performers of the golden period post-Independence. Initially discovered as a vocalist by Coxsone Dodd, he went on to work with such luminaries as Ken Boothe and Stranger Cole before co-founding The Heptones and working Duke Reid, Bunny Lee and Lloyd Charmers. As a session organist he worked for The Hippy Boys, The Reggae Boys and later with Lee Perry's The Upsetters. Here he came in to the orbit of The Wailors, touring England with them in the early 70s and with Perry co-wrote Mr Brown. When most of The Upsetters became Marley's rhythm section, Adams stayed with Perry before making the move to Brooklyn in 1975.There he started Capo Records, running it and it's sub-labels, successfully until the mid-80s. During these later years he ventured in to mixing Reggae with Boogie and Disco rhythms and released just four 12's under Capo Disco as well as recording boogie and hip-hop influenced releases with T Ski Valley and as Glen Adams Affair for SAM and Moonglow Records. Here then the spotlight is on Adam's nascent disco releases and the series starts with the wonderful, uplifting A Beat For You. Actually appearing on a one off sister-label, Top Secret, this is a beautiful 'Lovers' anthem from Adams over a laidback dub-bass riddim. Backed with a simple instrumental Version, the space and interplay of the keys and guitar over drum and bass is superlative. 'There is a beat in my heart, just for you...just for you.'

The album employed several major hits as the basis for the tracks, including Horace Andy's versions of "Ain't No Sunshine" (on the title track) and "A Quiet Place" ("Poison Flour" and "I Shall Fear No Evil"), John Holt's "Ali Baba" ("I Killed the Barber"), and Gregory Isaacs' "Thief a Man" (on "Gimmie Mi Gun") and "My Religion" ("Unitone Skank"). Outstanding three track EP from the archives of Caliban (A side project of London musician Milton Myrie; a session guitar player who worked with cult UK buddhist afro and reggae band Ozo as well as on the much sought after Steel and Skin ‘Afro Punk Reggae’ 12”). Talk about bang for ye buck.. 1 side crucial oddball digital cuts, b side sounds like a UK jazz funk classic... Gold Print Sleeve. BIG TIP!Caliban produced only one self-released 7” ‘Open Mind / Digital Reggae’ in 1984.Following the re-discovery of this very little known 7” by Caliban a few years back, UK producer Jackson Bailey aka Tapes managed to track Milton down, who as well as being in possession of most of the stock of the original record, was also sat on a number of amazing unreleased recordings from the Caliban sessions. With an album of unreleased Caliban material compiled by Tapes to follow later on Music From Memory, this EP introduces one of the unreleased tracks; the incredible feel good disco anthem “Supernatural”. Taking us on a glittering, rhythm charged rocket tour of the Funk Cosmos, this until-now-unheard future classic will surely set the summer nights alight. The three track 12” also includes “Digital Reggae” which featured on the original Caliban 7”. This computerised dancehall/funk hybrid was partially penned to address the lack of black culture included in the payload of the United States’ first space station; “Digital Reggae will be included in the Payload of Skylab!”. As well as the original mix, the EP also includes a new dub put together by Milton himself and assisted by riddim specialist Tapes!

This time Y-Bayani has support from the great voice of Baby Naa. Baby Naa was just hanging out at the studio in Accra/Ghana when the recordings of Rehwe Mie Enyim took place. The crew was waiting desperately for a singer to back up Y-Bayani. After an hour of waiting the producer, knowing that she sings at church every Sunday, asked Baby Naa to do the missing part. Then something occurred that nobody was expecting and finally everybody was happy that the original singer hadn't made it.Rehwe Mie Enyim is a unique example of how roots-reggae can sound today. “All of a sudden, Jamaica awoke one morningand U-Roy was everywhere…”So read the original liner notes to this classic reggae LP, whichoriginally hit in 1971 and washed over the island like a groovingtropical storm.U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for goodreason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the early 1970s, hepioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in additionto bringing Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influentialon an American vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. This full-length, his first after a string of singles (mostly on theTreasure Isle and other Duke Reid labels, run by the famedproducer and studio owner), rolls like a crazy party where awobbly, but talented, “master of ceremonies” grabs the mic andwon’t let go. Speaking over and around songs that already havestraight-ahead vocals on them, U-Roy shows the world why he isconsidered an iconoclast and trailblazer. In all honesty, there are few standouts on the album since they allrun a similar course, and all are captivating in their own way.Modern listeners will especially note “Tide Is High,” originally bythe Paragons (featuring dulcet-toned vocalist John Holt) andrecorded later as a 1980 smash hit by Blondie. Each track here is a new adventure, and while U-Roy’s approachmight take some getting used to, it will eventually capture yourears as it did the entire island of Jamaica in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Sitback, drop the needle, and enjoy.

In terms of value for money, this 30-minute collection isn't exactly world-class. But in terms of musical quality, you couldn't do much better -- it's just about as good an encapsulation of the art of super-producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, the Upsetters, as you'll find. Originally issued in the mid '70s on the Creole label (and reissued at least twice since, on Crocodisc and Lagoon), this album finds Perry at the peak of his somewhat creepy powers, taking such classic songs as Junior Byles' "The Long Way" and Ricky & Bunny's "Bush Weed Corn Trash" and subjecting them to the deconstructionist rigors of dub -- the sound careening wildly between the left and right channels, bass and drums dropping out suddenly, leaving only guitar and snippets of sung vocals, while Perry adds his own apocalyptic imprecations and off-the-wall witticisms on top. What makes these tracks so powerful is the juxtaposition of Perry's insane production approach with the Upsetters' utterly rock-solid grooves, grooves which not even the chief Upsetter himself can dislodge. Spanning nearly 30 years of revolutionary music and featuring the music of Count Ossie, Johnny Clarke, The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Ras Michael and The Sons of Negus, Bongo Herman, Roy Ashanti (The Congos), Earth & Stone, Mutabaruka and many more, this is an in-depth look at some of the most unique and righteous music ever made and comes complete with a 40+ page outsize booklet, containing exclusive photography and extensive historical and contextual sleevenotes. The new religion of Rastafari emerged in Jamaica during a time of intense political and social change in the 1930s. The first stirrings of anti-colonialism and workers’ rights were in motion, while Marcus Garvey’s Back-to-Africa movement was beginning to wane. But the pivotal catalyst to the birth of the Rastafari faith was the crowning of a black king in Africa in 1930.One of the earliest mentions of Ethiopia in Jamaican music can be found on mento singer Lord Lebby and the Jamaican Calpysonians’ 1955 recording ‘Etheopia’. In the song Noel Williams, aka Lord Lebby, discusses Ethiopianism, the political movement that calls for a return to Africa for black people. The 1960s saw the emergence of the first Rastafarian music on record with Count Ossie’s Rastafarian drummers. The visit of Haile Selassie to Kingston in 1966 was like an electric current throughout Kingston’s music scene – many of who had become adherents to the Rastafari faith. By the 1970s Rastafarianism become practically synonymous with reggae, as many roots reggae artists became known throughout the world, led by the success of Bob Marley and The Wailers. At the source of the music of Rastafari is the figurehead master drummer and leader Count Ossie, who first bought the deeply spiritual nyabinghi and burro rhythms heard and played at sacred Rastafarian grounation (reasoning) sessions into popular Jamaican music through his many collaborations and performances with artists – from The Skatalites to The Folks Brothers - and producers – including Clement Dodd, Prince Buster and Harry Mudie. At the start of the 1970s Count Ossie formed the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari with saxophonist Cedric Brooks, which immediately became the most significant group of the Rastafari faith, bringing together authentic rasta nyabinghi drumming together with spiritual and avant-garde jazz influences of Sun Ra, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler into a truly unique and groundbreaking sound. As ‘roots reggae’ artists in the 1970s continued to spread the word of Jah (God) in their music, Rastafari reggae became the ultimate rebel sound throughout the world.

Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays the mix masters varied approach of, but clocks in as one of his best outings! Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other various wobbly interjections from the mixing board. And adding to the record’s expert evocation of the Halloween spirit are some fiendishly voiced intros, the cover art’s cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th (reach for the flashlights kids). Along with Keith Hundson’s Pick a Dub and Lee Perry’s Blackboard Jungle Dub, this excellent Scientist release is one of the essential dub albums available.

Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart is a name to remember when it comes to modern groove music! Bassist and guitarist in various band, he started production in the mid- 90s and continues today to combine modern technology with the raw and genuine spirit of the golden age of Disco, Funk, Soul, Jazz, or Reggae.Based in Lyon (France), he’s constantly been looking up for new artists and adventures to feed his endless appetite for production and composition. As a result, his discography is quite exceptional today and the list of projects he’s been involved in quite impressive: Uptown Funk Empire, Mr President, Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Mr Day, Hawa, or Patchworks Galactic Project are just a few examples… Album after album, he proved a true gift of musical ubiquity, renewing in all genres and always mindful to ensure high standards.Since 2007, just following the international success of The Dynamics first album, Patchworks has also started to hide under Taggy Matcher alias, releasing fine Reggae remixes on Stix Records, a subdivision of Favorite Recordings. And after a few years seeing these remixes played all over, the mysterious Taggy Matcher and Stix Records decided it was time to go further and prepare a first album. After a first single covering two tracks of The Black Keys and shedding lights on a new singer called Birdy Nixon, Taggy Matcher recently presented the song “My Man”, alongside another surprising great songstress from Lyon: LMK. On this track, Taggy dug more into the Digital Reggae sound from the early 80s, showing another side of his production scale, more famous for his Rocksteady-Roots style until then.Coming out late November, Taggy Matcher’ first album, called Singasong, definitely explores even more into the various styles of Jamaican music. Surrounded by a loyal team of musicians, he continues the long-standing local tradition of covers, taking over titles as varied as "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath or "No Love Allowed" by Rihanna, to name just a few.As for vocals, Taggy also gave his trust to a fine crew: around a captivating Birdy Nixon, the young LMK shows eloquent skills, as do Mr Day and John Milk, his two longtime buddies. And whether it’s in adaptation or composition, the sound and production of this first album impress by its authenticity and style.

In the great tradition of Count Ossie, four new grounation furies — hypnotic, thunderous, urgent, mystical — with dubwise repeta, funde and bass drums embedding the Light Of Saba veteran's gorgeous trombone classicism. The opener is a rocking kumina rhythm, with ring-the-alarm metal percussion and exhortatory brass; Free The People swirls some apocalyptic reasoning into the foggy, thumping mix. Universe In Crisis is another emergency call, chuffing headlong down the grooves... before the beautiful, anthemic Chant takes a step back from the fire, closing with a sense of thankful, spiritual reconciliation, the expert drumming and lyrical bone-work in full effect.

Ramrock Records are proud to present the new album from musical visionary, Ghetto Priest.Already known to many as the frontman of Asian Dub Foundation and vocalist on their globally acclaimed single 'Fortress Europe', Ghetto Priest has been captivating audiences with his powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence over the past three decades. With a raw energy and spirit un-matched by many artists of his generation, he constantly pushes at the boundaries of roots music; his style strongly maintaining the essence of his Jamaican heritage. Produced by On-U Sound supremo Adrian Sherwood..His latest sermon is a blend of righteous incitements and damning indictments that reflect the paranoia of daily life. Title track 'Every Man For Every Man' asks us to reach out to our fellow neighbour while he delivers a sobering message towards the environment and defending if from the evils of a money-motivated government on 'Sacred Ground'.On the mystical 'Good Lord', Ghetto Priest seeks spiritual guidance and his raw primal energies and forces come to light in a passionate re-working of the Robert Burns poem, 'I Murder Hate', before the trials and triumphs of black women are voiced in the Judy Mowatt song, 'Black Woman'. On the little-known Peter Tosh song, 'Babylon Queendom', he passionately announces Babylon's fall, demanding back the riches she's plundered.

The rare all-Female Top 40/Reggae band in Jamaica called "PEP", and then "WOW" for "Works Of Women" released a few tunes in the mid 80's, mainly on the High Heel label. "Crisis" is a tune about poverty and the crisis that mash up all over the world in the early 80's. This is probably the hardest to find tune of the group. "Crisis" was produced by Fab 5 member Harold Bailey who tried to help the all-Female band in 1985. Only a few boxes of copies were pressed and nowadays you can't find a clean copy for less than several hundred of euros.

An independent band since 1998, Dub inc are nonetheless fully acclaimed by the entire reggae scene. The group won no less than three Victoires du Reggae awards (in 2014 for the "Paradise" album, in 2011 for "Hors Contrôle", and 2008 for "Afrikya"). In 2016, they are back with a sixth LP, "So What". No doubt this one will be yet another important landmark. Completely self-produced, as is their habit and will, this fourteen-track record is the result of a long process of composing and writing songs inspired by the dark events that have been going on in France in the last few months. Featuring a mix of dancehall, hip-hop, and electronica influences, "So What" is a pure reggae album upholding the values of this rebellious, spiritual, and universal music genre. The album uninhibitedly addresses complex themes such as identitarian closure, the anxiety of countries who only speak out of fear and rejection of the other, or conspiracy theories that have no other purposes than to confuse people ("Triste Epoque", "So What"). However, it does include a large dose of optimism too, as well as calls for love and respect for your neighbours, whoever they are. As sons of immigrants who built their lives in France and transmitted them the values of integrity, respect and solidarity, the members of Dub Inc are the epitome of the fact that we can accomplish beautiful things only together and united ("Exil", "No Matter Where You Come from"). The social themes dear to the group are present ("Justice"), but "So What" also features lighter songs such as "Grand Périple", offsetting the record's mood with notes of optimism. "Love is the Meaning" brings a softer touch to the album, "Fêlés" pays tribute to the band's fans and "Ragga Bizness" humorously deals with the throes of the music world. Besides these risk-taking songs, some more typical tunes are reminiscent of the band's debut albums ("Exil", "Comme de l'or"). The band's politically conscious lyrics lie somewhere between constructive projections into the future and implacable analyses on the present. Each tune is a cleverly orchestrated composition, proving once again the band's production qualities. After five successful albums, Dub Inc have been eagerly awaited. "So What" successfully converts the try, placing them for good in the French musical landscape.

“Rockin Live Ruff And Tuff”, this is the untrammeled counterpart to Dadawah, six years later in 1980, fresh from the Black Ark: free, raw spiritual trance-music; a full-force Nyabinghi freak-out. The drummers are headlong and rollicking, thunderous and explosive. Even more so than Dadawah, the mix is ecstatically filled with echoes; dub wise without let-up. Ras Michael himself sings from the mountain-top, like he just don’t care — at the top of his lungs, in voices, screeching like a bird — with the delirious abandonment otherwise owned in reggae by Lee Perry. Amongst the uncredited performances swirled into proceedings, there are squiggles of flute straight from the Upsetters song-book, the minor-key organ stabs and abstraction of electric space-jazz, and sax-playing more attuned to the Headhunters than the Blazing Horns. (I Ya I in particular is a stunning fifteen minutes.) This is the real thing, music without affectation. Pure reggae. Sun Ra fans should love it; anyone with ears to hear.Prepared and manufactured at Abbey Road, D&M and Pallas; beautifully presented in rigid, old-school, tip-on sleeves, with matt-coated fronts and untreated-paper backs; 180g vinyl.

Toots & The Maytals' long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. Among the numerous musical accomplishments of Frederick "Toots" Hibbert and his group was the song "Pressure Drop", which was released initially in 1970, but received widespread acclaim for its appearance in the soundtrack to the film"Harder They Come". It's since been covered by The Clash, The Specials, The Selecter, Robert Palmer, and numerous others, has been rated by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and is credited with helping introduce reggae music to the world. Though originally released in 1970, the US wouldn't get to experience "Pressure Drop" until 1975, when it was released on the US version of their album "Funky Kingston", easily considered one of the strongest albums in Toots & The Maytals' catalog, not to mention one of the greatest in reggae history. Upon its release in the States it received massive critical applause (even warming the cold, icy heart of Robert Christgau) for its infectious melodies and rhythms on tracks like "Sailing On", "Time Tough", and theeponymous title track, quirky Jamaica-infused covers of tracks by John Denver and Ike Turner, and of course the influential "Pressure Drop." Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history.
