Cultures of Soul is very excited to announce this killer tropical reggae cover of Sade's Smooth Operator. Recorded at Circle Sound Studios in Miami the backing track was recorded by members of the famous reggae outfit Inner Circle with vocals by local area rising star at the time, Sabrina Rich. Sabrina (her real name is actually Sabrena) had been making records in her and her ex-husband's studio in their garage for years. The result of which was the disco 12" Exit/Whispering. Around this time Sabrina was performing in the Palm Beach / Boca Raton area of Florida and performed with Jimmy Bo Horne. Some time after Sabrina worked with a man named Kenneth Corey who mastered her recordings. Kenneth referred her to Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle to help press up their vinyl. They became friends and around 1985 recorded Smooth Operator. During this time they were working and partying hard and experimenting with different ideas and sounds. The track was originally released in small numbers as sort of a demo and never really took off. Shortly after Inner Circle went on tour in Europe and the single went into obscurity until many years later when copies of the record turned up in New York and Toronto. This 12" includes a special discomix edit by Duckcomb a.k.a. Patrick Billard, DJ and record collector extraordinaire.

Soul Jazz Records are proud to present this new collection of music from the great Fashion Records, one of the
most important and iconic independent reggae labels to come out of the UK, and which ran from 1980 for nearly
20 years.
In that time Fashion released hundreds of records that successfully reflected, and indeed set, the changing styles
and perspectives of reggae music in the UK – from UK dancehall and lovers rock in the 1980s through to the
mighty rise of jungle in the second half of the 1990s.
While nearly all other UK reggae labels focused on releasing Jamaican music – from the early days of Island
and Trojan in the 1960s, through Island and Virgin in the 1970s, and Greensleeves that came up in the 1980s
– Fashion’s focus was firmly on music produced in the UK. This unique British perspective shaped both lyrical
content and musical fashion. And like all the great music labels – from Studio One to Blue Note – Fashion was
able to create a significant roster of its own artists.
Amazingly for a small independent label, a number of Fashion artists achieved mainstream UK chart and
crossover success – including Laurel & Hardy, Smiley Culture and General Levy. But although this success was
welcomed, crossing over into the mainstream was never the main focus for the label owners Chris Lane and
John McGillivray (who also runs the successful Dub Vendor record shop) whose starting point was always
primarily focused on producing quality music first.
In the early 1980s, Fashion Records captured the rise of the emerging British dancehall scene in its ascendency.
The large roster of first generation British-born artists and MCs on the label – including General Levy, Papa Face,
Smiley Culture, Bionic Rhona, Asher Senator, Laurel & Hardy, Top Cat and many more – often gave a unique
and sometimes humorous British lyrical perspective to Fashion releases, discussing everyday subjects, from
police harassment to road safety!
Throughout much of the 1980s and into the 1990s Fashion continued to release an almost relentless array of
UK dancehall releases as well as continuing with lovers rock, and the occasional dub releases. Then, in the mid-
90s, with the dancehall and reggae releases still coming on strong, Fashion released a superb series of early
jungle tracks linking Jamaican and British MCs and dancehall artists with young jungle mixers, re-mixers and
producers. By this time dancehall artists General Levy and Cutty Ranks had become the staple vocal samples of
literally hundreds of white label jungle records and Fashion took advantage of this, often getting young
producers to work in exchange for sample clearances – don’t get mad, get even!
This album is a subjective and scatter-gun ride through some of the many unique and heavyweight tracks to
come out of the Fashion stable that we love – some classics, some lesser-known, all 100% killer!

7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the Jamaican music
industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed
the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their
booming sound systems as quickly as possible. In that spirit, Get On Down will
be reissuing some of the most crucial reggae and ska sides on 45.
This time out we revisit a single Lee Perry first issued right after his fabled
Black Ark Studio was first up and running. On the A-Side you know you’ve got
something special when a cut kicks off with Lee Perry growling like a lion,
“borrowing” heavily from Al Green’s “Love And Happiness” for “Jungle Lion.”
On the B-Side Perry lets The Upsetters do the roaring with the cut being
remixed into “Freak Out Skank.” First issued in 1973 on Perry’s own Justice
League imprint with a UK issue following almost immediately, miss this and
you’ll miss one of the most crucial developments in the sonic evolution of
Scratch’s 1970s output.

This is the latest new installment of Soul Jazz Records’ on-going collection of Rastafarian music at Studio One, featuring classic material from legendary roots and culture artists The Gladiators, Horace Andy, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott and the Wailing Souls, alongside a superb selection of rarities from Sir Coxsone’s musical empire made up of one-off and practically unknown Rastafarian artists who recorded on a myriad of Studio One off-shoot labels in the 1970s – The Manchesters, Mellodies, The Nightingales and others.
In this new collection, we see that once again the prescient Clement Dodd was a man who saw the wider picture. In the 1960s it was Sir Coxsone who identified the creative potential of The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, Heptones, Burning Spear and many, many others. In the 1970s Studio One released an untouchable selection of the finest as styles moved from reggae to deejay to dub and, in the latter half, the emergence of dancehall.
But what is also clear is that throughout this era Studio One released an incredible amount of roots music, and not just the most commercially obvious. For alongside the career-building catalogues of Burning Spear, The Wailing Souls, The Gladiators and so on, one needs to be an ardent Studio One collector to know some of the truly raw Rastafarian music featured here. Groups such as The Manchesters or The Nightingales feel as if they were recorded straight out of the churchical chants of the mansions.
Black Man’s Pride explains the links between the ideology of Clement Dodd at Studio One and the Rastafarian faith, which was the creation of Afro-Jamaicans and concerned above all else with a black consciousness and empowerment, a rediscovering of the personal and racial identity of black people. The movement began in the 1930s and, in tandem with this black consciousness, called for a rejection of the British imperial culture that dominated Jamaica, while creating an identity based on a re-appropriation of an African heritage.
The Rastafari movement was like a pivot, bringing together and balancing many vectors of ideologies. Marcus Garvey’s Back to Africa movement, trades union discourse, anti-colonialism and nation independence, maroon self-definition and independence, the spirit of African rebellion in the Caribbean. For Clement Dodd, a black man and producer growing up in Kingston in this era, Rastafari was simply a part of his everyday world – from witnessing Count Ossie’s grounations to the faith of many Jamaican artists at Studio One – from the Skatalites onwards.
Featured here alongside these classic and rare tracks from Studio One are new and extensive sleeve notes with track-by-track notes by Rob Chapman, author of the acclaimed Downbeat Special and Never Grow Old Studio One books.

Originally released in the winter of 2012 as part of a self-released E.P., "Never Answer" b/w "Questions" has been remastered and lovingly pressed onto a 45rpm, 7" record - the way it should be! One of the first songs that found bassist Preet Patel in the proverbial driver's seat, the tune began as a instrumental demo with only a chorus melody and a strong UK lovers rock vibe. Once Preet played it for the rest of the group the tune quickly came to life with the addition of Dan Klein's sincere, soulful vocal melody that pays homage to a long-time personal hero of the Frightnrs, the legendary Sugar Minott. The lovers touch mixed with the gritty Brooklyn & Queens rocksteady approach the Frightnrs have become known for has evolved into something all their own...some might say Frightsteady. A truly hidden gem in the Frightnrs formidable catalog, that is sure to bring joy to any and all discerning selectors out there in the Daptone Universe.

From the minds of Direct Beat and Detroit Bass Classics, comes the first initial compilation of electro/techno heat... "Electro In The Key Of Detroit: Volume 1"...Proven dance floor dope & record crate staples that provide the hungry ears of masses the groove to move: World-Wide. 'DJ K1's "Erase The Time" (featured on Detroit's WGPR TV "New Dance Show" in the 1990s) rocked the airwaves and global clubs with its signature thumping style laced beneath alien-like melody and repetitive vocal structure. 'Posatronix' mutant-rhythm mantra, "Pure Techno Sound" pulls the weight of Detroit's street dance roots down to the origin of how to boogie in space. A sure-fire stepper that also shared popularity on TV dance show platforms from Techno City. 'Blaktony's tempo-pushing "Holla Holla" , direct from the documentary soundtrack: "AUX88: Portrait Of An Electronic Band" dvd box set (a radio Dj/mix show favorite) sees the light of day on this wax collectable, giving praise to Motor City footwork culture. Also included in this monster EP is the rare 'AUX88' voyage entitled: "Phantom Power"...a gem and collector’s choice. Crafted exclusively for the laid-back option away from the party or to enjoy accompanying a night's drive. This collection of re-issued jams and new explorations 'IS' the must-have for the electro/techno & bass aficionado...See it as either a DJ's weapon of choice, or the gift from vault

Olive “Senya” Grant was a gifted songwriter and performer hailing from east Kingston. Blessed with a beautifully melodic voice and fused with the eternal grass roots spirit of social consciousness, struggle and perseverance, her musical development began when she was quite young in the early 1970s.
The young Senya was brought under the attention of Aston 'Familyman' Barrett by Bunny Wailer. In 1974 Familyman took Senya to Randy´s studio and, together with Clive Chin, created the haunting tunes 'Children Of The Ghetto' and 'Rootsman'. When Bob Marley finished building the Tuff Gong Studio at 56 Hope Road, Senya returned to the studio and recorded 'Natural Woman' and a new version of 'Children Of The Ghetto'. Senya can even be heard singing background vocals on the internationally acclaimed album and tune 'Jerusalem' by Alpha Blondy.
The next few years saw Senya recording at various other studios and releasing a consistent string of songs such as “Show Some Love” which was originally released on Jimmy Cliff's Oneness label in 1986, however produced by his aspiring nephew Ras Sipho who learned his production craft from the best being naturally exposed to the music and destined to become a producer himself.
During the latter part of the ‘90s, Senya was the head of the backing vocals group that toured with the Wailers band throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, Brazil and the South Pacific including Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and New Caledonia. Filling in the gaps between touring, recording and performance dates, Senya also worked for the Reggae Sunsplash organization performing various administrative duties behind the scenes for roughly 16 years and even managed a successful restaurant for many years. Amazingly, in the midst of all of this she raised a beautiful family, making Senya one of the hardest working women in the business.
In 2001 she sadly transitioned away leaving many beautiful recordings to be explored and experienced. The Original Roots Dawta is greatly missed by all.

Jamaican trio Israel Vibration are one of Reggae's great vocal groups from the 1970s roots era. The trio re-formed in 1988, signed to the RAS label and set to work on a new album known as 'Strength Of My Life'. Produced by Doctor Dread and backed by the mighty force of the Roots Radics, the I-Vibes returned to form and found a new strength and power. The Radics perfectly complement their songs, laying down bass driven rhythms to create a masterful backdrop over which the harmonies conjure up a wide spectrum of moods. Featuring on this Limited 12" release is the crucial and perhaps more relevant to our current climate 'Middle East' plus 'Greedy Dog' with guest musician Augustus Pablo on melodica duties. Under licence and for the very first time ever with their Dub counterparts this release is one for the fans!

"Nordub" ist das erste gemeinsame Album der Grammy-Preisträger und Reggae-Legenden Sly & Robbie und dem
norwegischen Jazz-Innovator Nils Petter Molvaer.

Soul Jazz Records release Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation’s seminal 1975 album 'Tales of Mozambique' in an expanded double album format, fully remastered and with the inclusion of two bonus rare single-only tracks, full sleevenotes, exclusive photographs and interview.

Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, nowadays an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley’s promotion of the faith internationally in the 1970s. Count Ossie’s drummers performed on the first commercially released single to integrate Rastafarian traditional music with popular music: the vocal group The Folkes Brothers’ groundbreaking song ‘Oh Carolina’, recorded for producer Prince Buster in 1959. In 1966 his drummers greeted the momentous arrival of Haile Selassie at Kingston airport. His legendary jam sessions in his Rastafarian compound up in the hills of Wareika, Kingston, are famous for the many Jamaican musicians who attended including The Skatalites players - Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs - and many others. The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970, a union of Count Ossie’s Rastafarian drummers - variously known as his African Drums, Wareikas or his Afro-Combo - and the saxophonist Cedric Im Brooks’ horns group, The Mystics.

The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari are the defining group in bringing authentic Rastafarian rhythms into the collective consciousness of popular music, their unique music is at once rooted in the deep traditions and rituals of traditional drumming alongside a forward-thinking, even avant-garde, artistry influenced by the likes of John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and other pioneering African-American jazz artists radicalised and charged by the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Tales of Mozambique is a truly unique and fascinating ground-breaking album.

The gentle side of Gentleman. Mind-bending stuff.

Rudie will recognise Bobby Sarkie from The Tartans and The Immortals (not to mention his solo roots killer Better World). His singing here is expertly reined in by desolation, numbness and regret, over a hollowed-out, mesmeric rhythm, with some nasty synth-work and casually brilliant effects on the drums. The vocal cut is more than a minute longer than the version which opens the Jah Son Invasion album with such a flourish; and the mix is different, with more prominent keys, and toned-down bass. It’s previously unreleased, like the dub.

The B-side is booby-trapped with sensational instrumental excursions on Junior Delahaye’s Working Hard For The Rent Man and Jackie Mittoo’s almighty Drum Song, which conclude the same original tape-reel as Over And Over. Rent Rebate features masterful, boppish soprano saxophone-playing by Roland Alphonso, and restrained guitar interjections by Barry Vincent, with a Spanish tang. The superb hand-drumming on Mount Zion is by Ras Menelik; and it’s Mittoo himself on organ (or just maybe Clive Hunt, Wackies can’t quite remember).

Top-ranking toaster Dillinger, aka Lester Bullock, is among the most versatile and popular of all the Jamaican deejays. Displaying an ease of verbal dexterity at the microphone, he can attack any subject under the sun with wit and skill. Emerging from a ghetto area near Waltham Park Road in western Kingston, he began as a protégé to Dennis Alcapone on El Paso sound system, where he was known initially as Alcapone Junior, later switched to Smith the Weapon, based in nearby Payneland. Recording a glut of material for Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry under the name Young Dillinger in the early 1970s, he also cut sporadic work for Winston Riley, Prince Tony Robinson, Phil Pratt, Enos McLeod, Augustus Pablo and Yabby You, among others, his debut album, Ready Natty Dreadie, surfacing from Studio One. Although Channel One broke him into the mainstream with “Cokane In My Brain” and the CB200 LP, his longstanding connection with Bunny Lee resulted in all kinds of noteworthy material. None Stop Disco Style is the American issue of the 1977 release also known as Talking Blues, though slightly reedited for the US market; with every track presented in “showcase” style with an extended dub portion, it has excellent Dillinger workouts of Johnny Clarke favourites such as “Roots Natty Roots Natty Congo,” “Give Up The Badness” and “Nobody’s Business.” Killer! Pressed in a limited edition of 300 copies on military green and white vinyl LP for RSD 2019.

As the truth about the inhuman conditions in South African apartheid became commonly known around the world, countless Jamaican artists were inspired to voice their concerns and extol praises on the nation’s most prominent freedom fighter… Nelson Mandela. The musical support for Nelson Mandela and dissent and disgust of the apart-heid system from Jamaica was not only confined to culturally inclined artists who had fought long and hard to assert their “declarations of rights” but also from every corner of reggae music. From velvet voiced vocalists renowned for their romantically inclined love songs to the “rockstone” delivery of dance hall deejays, established veterans and youthful newcomers all came together to address the common cause of South African freedom. Feature tracks include "Freedom Fighters", "Free Mandela", "Gunshot For Botha" and the haunting "Can You".

While Montego Bay natives Jackie Bernard, his brother Footy Bernard and cousin Lloyd Kerr recorded under various guises in the early ’60s, their collective arrival as The Kingstonians in 1967 marked a sea change not only in the vocal trio’s productivity and popularity, but also in the emerging Reggae sound. The Kingstonians made several chart-topping singles between 1968 and 1970, including the massive hit “Singer Man” whose success ultimately led to the release of their sole LP, Sufferer.

Originally issued on Trojan, Sufferer collects a dozen of The Kingstonians’ best-known songs. Produced by Derrick Harriott, these truly boss sounds would pack dancehalls on the island as well as become the soundtrack for working-class youth across ’70s Britain.

The title track remains a classic of the early Reggae era with impeccable arrangements, stuttering organ and soul-steeped lyrics. The Kingstonians’ shift away from Rocksteady modes is perhaps most apparent on the aforementioned “Singer Man”—an irresistible forward groove, prompting a deeper danceability that is rightly centered on real feeling.

Antarctica Starts Here presents the first-time domestic release of Sufferer. Reproducing the original sleeve design, this reissue is part of an archival series that focuses on Trojan’s essential ’60s and ’70s catalogue. Liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.

In the early 1970s, top-ranking toaster Lester Bullock got his start on the El Paso sound system in the mean streets of western Kingston. Initially known as Young Capone, since he was a protégé of the better-established Dennis Alcapone, he was renamed Dillinger by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, the first producer to record a significant number of tracks with the youth. “Dub Organiser” and “Tighten Up Skank” were somewhat popular when released in 1973 and there were individual tracks cut for Phil Pratt, Augustus Pablo, Prince Tony Robinson and Joe Gibbs, as well as Studio One, who issued debut LP, Ready Natty Dreadie, in 1975. By then, Dillinger was recording a series of singles for hit-making produce Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee, particularly on Johnnie Clarke’s rhythms, though recordings for Channel One and the CB 200 album were what catapulted him into overseas consciousness in 1976, once the outstanding single, “Cokane In My Brain,” reached the European pop charts. Marijuana In My Brain dates from 1977 and placed the toaster over some of the Striker’s hottest rhythms, previously utilised for Johnnie Clarke scorchers like “Satta” and “Poor Marcus” (along with the odd Ronnie Davis track); Clarke’s reading of “Going To A Ball” is here transformed into an ode to the Bouncing Ball, then one of the most popular clubs for black Londoners, and his “African Roots” anthem gets the Dillinger treatment too. Of course, the title track was the biggest hit of the bunch, an ode to the ‘wisdom weed’ driven by cosmic space synth overdubs.

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Long-out-of-print re-release of this classic Sugar Minott album on Soul Jazz Records,
bringing together the best of his classic material recorded at Studio One in the 1970s.
Lincoln Sugar Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1956. He grew up in a poor area of
West Kingston and from an early age developed a love of Reggae music and the music of
Studio One in particular. As a teenager, he became selector for Sound of Silence Keystone
and Gathering of Youth local sound-systems. By the late 1970s Minott had risen to
become one of the biggest stars in Jamaican music.
Sugar Minott began his career at Studio One. After auditioning in front of Clement ‘Sir
Coxsone’ Dodd in the early 1970s, he became the first artist to record new songs over
classic rhythms, singing over original Studio One tapes – the significance of which led
directly to the birth of dancehall, as Channel One, Joe Gibbs and hundreds of other
Jamaican producers quickly began releasing their own material based on these same
classic Studio One rhythms replayed by Sly and Robbie, The Aggrovators, Soul Syndicate,
Roots Radics and many others.
“I knew Studio One spiritually before I knew Studio One physically. You know I grew up
beside a dancehall and Sir Coxsone’s sound used to play there from when I was a boy. So
from that influence you know I used to love Studio One sound so much, I became a sound
selector. So that was my first involvement with getting to know Studio One music like The
Heptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, the whole works and that was my life from a youth.”
After Sugar Minott’s debut many other artists followed suit at the label such as Freddie
McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Lone Ranger and Michigan & Smiley leading to one of the
most creative periods for the label. This is the first retrospective of Sugar Minott at the
label and most of these recordings have never been widely available outside Jamaica.
Sugar Minott went on to a huge career in Reggae and is today one of the biggest stars in
Jamaican music. He set up his own Black Roots/Youth Promotions label releasing music by
Barry Brown, Michael Palmer, Tenor Saw, Barrington Levy, Horace Andy, Garnett Silk,
Junior Delgado, Yami Bolo, Junior Reid and many more.
Sugar Minott went on to work for numerous Jamaican producers. His ‘Good Thing Going’
produced by Donovan Germain became a number one hit in the UK and led to the rise of
Lovers Rock. This album includes classic cuts as well as super-rare singles only recordings,
all of which have been digitally re-mastered for this release.

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Between the twin pillars of "Cloak and Dagger" and
"Blackboard Jungle Dub", the superlative, yet often
overlooked, "Rhythm Shower" album was also released in
'73. Originally issued in a very limited Jamaican pressing
with no sleeve, it became better known when re-released
by the Trojan label as part of its 3 LP, and later 2-CD set,
The Upsetter Collection, first issued in 1986.
Despite its obscurity, "Rhythm Shower" is a pivotal album
in Perry's career as a producer and bandleader; it finds
him beginning to experiment with dub and developing his
singular studio sound that would come to full maturity in
subsequent years.
Whereas earlier albums offered plenty of instrumental
versions, on "Rhythm Shower", Perry really begins
employing the studio sleight of hand that would become
part and parcel for what was then the emerging art form of
dub -- dropping voices and instruments in and out of the
mix to create a trippy, hypnotic effect. Not to go unnoticed
is the mighty Upsetters themselves, whose revolving crew
of musical heavyweights included Bob Marley & The
Wailers future rhythm section Aston "Family Man" Barrett
on bass and drummer Carlton Barrett. The powerhouse
rhythms they forged give Perry all the space he needs to
work his mojo at the mixing desk.
With one foot planted firmly in the celebrated sound of the
time and the other stepping assuredly into the future,
"Rhythm Shower" is essential listening for any fan of
Reggae, Dub or Lee Perry. This is crucial music. This is
classic Scratch.
