Genre:Electronic / Dance
Through dense layers of noise, brittle beats, found sounds and a general haze, Francis Harris returns to his own Scissor and Thread imprint, with the aid of frequent collaborator, and longtime friend, guitarist Gabe Hedrick, under the guise Aris Kindt. Following Harris’ 2014 sophomore solo album, "Minutes of Sleep,” (named Electronic Album of the Year by Mojo Magazine,) the duo's quintessential album debut, “Floods," takes as its focus, the late author W.G. Sebald’s profound interpretation of Rembrandt’s 1632 master work, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. "Floods" is a sonic journey into the heart of the body, a bold rejuvenation of Adriaan Adriaanszoon (Aris Kindt), once a mere cadaver on a cold metal slab, now a living breathing human at the heart of a creative shift in vantage point from object to active subject. Much in the same way Rembrandt intended with the painting itself, “Floods” attempts to subvert the listeners memory of a moment. Written within a span of over a year using an 808, a modular eurorack and two guitars, “Floods” was mixed at Keyclub Recording Company in late August with Engineer Bill Skibbe. The album charts new territory for both Harris and Hedrick, melding a long history with electronic music and youthful love for indie noise, weaving in and out of near silence and sheering walls of sound with a gentle and constant heartbeat at its core. The dream-like murk of album opener “Now Grey” sets the tone with thick pads, distant, ghostly guitar work and fragmented drums. On the title track, dubby chords set the tone, as subdued toms amble forward, with a crackling of fire nearby, as a dense sounds echo and swirl around into a climactic frenzy. “Blue Sky Shoes” hypnotizes with its submerged strings and subaquatic patterning, as synths rain down like streaks breaking the surface. “Snowbird” builds into a repressed fury as a blizzard of toms bounce around a heavy layer of noise while a morose and longing string arrangement emerges from despair into an ethereal moment. “Every New Thing” dives deep again into murky waters with entrancing drums and warped guitar lines swirling around like sirens. “Embers” with its quiet demeanor, slowly builds to an enlightened peak, while the closing track, “Braids”, sees Harris and Co. touch upon a shoe gaze fog of churning guitar work and dense noise, as the sound of children swinging drifts in and out, as if trying desperately to recover a fragmented memory of lost time.

This includes 2 tracks exclusive to the vinyl release. On Scissor and Thread’s fourth release of 2016, newcomer Villete takes a turn in the spotlight on their deep house stunner, ‘Girl Next Door’. The A-side opens with the swelling pads and earnest hi-hat of “Dreams". A distant voice declares “everyone is devoted to their emotion, it’s me and my imagination” before a springy bass line drops in, ushering in the mantra “never be afraid to dream". A brassy synth further envelops the listener into the track’s warm embrace as layers of percussion skitter in and out of focus. “September” takes a turn for the cerebral with its’ skipping hi-hats and airy pads. A springy bass line is accompanied by celestial synths that envelop the senses, making this psychedelic cut primed for after hours devastation. Villete goes even more cerebral on their introspective title cut, dialing back on the BPM, but keeping the energy high. A hushed bass and thudding kick take the backseat, allowing the hypnotizing, submerged pads and swirling, reverbed synths to take center stage, transporting dancers into eye-closed euphoria. The EP closes with the murky drum tones of “Rillia". Droning pads, delicate claps, and a shy, skittering shaker keep things bubbling and light above the track’s thicker than molasses kicks. Deep house maestro Darand Land takes his turn on the aforementioned track, lifting it out of the murk and straight up to the heavens and drenching it in his sun-kissed, euphoric style.

The boys are gliding back onto the scene with Scissor and Thread's first release of 2016, "Waiting Ground". The handsome twosome of Frankie Skates and Tony B. Real deliver us four prime cuts aimed squarely at the dance floor. The vinyl-exclusive, "Ebreo", sees the duo flex their afro-rhythmic muscle, placing silky smooth bass over a bed of soft swirling percussion highlighted by a pitched down steel drum. Next, an edit first heard on Frank & Tony's acclaimed Resident Advisor podcast comes to light. Deftly cutting the hushed ambient tones of Donato Wharton's "Absentia” into perfect portions, Frank & Tony loop brittle bits over a chunky kick and shuffling hi-hat to hypnotic effect. The EP's title track evokes the sun-kissed euphoria of early hour raves with its lush atmospherics and playfully subdued piano line buoyed by a thick kick and airy pads.
