Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival, Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford’s haunting romantic thriller has been hailed as “a tour de force” (The Independent). Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star as a divorced couple discovering dark truths about each other and themselves. Nocturnal Animals marks the second film from writer/director Ford, and his second collaboration with composer Korzeniowski. Their first collaboration, A Single Man, earned Korzeniowski his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Score. The score was a breakout for the composer, earning him the prestigious Discovery Award at the 2010 Ghent Film Festival’s World Soundtrack Awards. Korzeniowski has described his latest score to Nocturnal Animals as “embracing two extremes, but switching their traditional genre characterization. The crime plot is scored as an intimate, personal story, while the psychological drama is treated as a thriller. The cold and detached intertwines with poignant and excruciating, the simple and intimate becomes grand and bold." The composer’s passionate and evocative compositions have been met with critical and industry acclaim. His score to Ford’s latest film has The Hollywood Reporter stating “the tempestuous strings of Abel Korzeniowski’s lush score provide an additional ballsy flourish, explicitly nodding to Hitchcock and Sirk.”

Former Stray Cat star Brian Setzer created his own bigband guitar-led sound and “Nutcracker Suite” captures it perfectly, whileElla Fitzgerald performs quite simply one of the best interpretations ever ofthe perennial song, “Sleigh Ride”.

This single LP is on 180g black vinyl. Francis Monkman’s dazzlingly crafted score to one of the truly great British gangster thrillers appears in stereo on vinyl for the first time, newly remastered for this release. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music the accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist formed Curved Air in 1970, one of the defining British progressive rock bands. In 1979 he joined the ‘super session-men group’ Sky, a line-up of outstanding musicians that included John Williams on guitar, Herbie Flowers on bass, Tristan Fry on drums and Kevin Peek on guitar. The first two albums from this virtuoso stellar line-up delivered a number nine and number one album respectively. These musicians remained an important element for this soundtrack, all bar John Williams featuring on the December 1979 recording sessions. The result is timelessly cool, with a theme that still graces DJ decks today.

In 1979 the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) was launched, the year that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop celebrated its 21st birthday. At the price of a house (approx. £30,000) this state of the art piece of equipment was embedded with an 8 bit digital sampling synthesizer capable of emulating acoustic instruments and orchestras alongside the manipulation of sound effects. For the BBC Radiophonic Workshop this was a major game changer, where previously, composers would spend weeks editing small pieces of tape together to create sounds. Ingenuity and creativity in music and sound was still at the forefront for Workshop members but suddenly made a whole lot easier. This 1983 collection (a first time re-release here of the complete album) celebrated these new found freedoms most notably on the opening track where five Radiophonic composers combined to add their own musical identity to a rhythmic percussive sequence from the Fairlight. Highlights include music from the radio production of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” and “Fancy Fish” based on Saint-Saen's “Carnival Of The Animals” which was the first BBC Radiophonic Workshop project to utilise the Fairlight.

The 1971 horror film The Nightcomers was a prequel to Henry James’ literary classic The Turn Of The Screw and is probably most remembered for its eye catching poster of a naked Marlon Brando and Stephanie Beacham (faithfully reproduced on the label of this release).Set on an isolated country estate it’s a tale of repression, sado-masochism and childhood innocence helmed by Michael Winner who would shortly go to make the big time in Hollywood with Death Wish. Marlon Brando would also move on to his greatest role as Don Corleone in The Godfather.Three times Oscar nominee composer Jerry Fielding delivered a perfectly pitched score for this gothic horror, illuminating his love of 19th century baroque music; he considered it one of his finest works. A close collaborator with Michael Winner his intricate film scores were also the bedrock of his longstanding relationships with Sam Peckinpah and Clint Eastwood on some of their biggest films.

Blazing Saddles is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all Hollywood comedies, a fact underlined by its three Academy Award nominations. Writer and director Mel Brooks brought to the soundtrack exactly what played out on screen, a glorious, gag-packed parody of the western genre. The main theme performed by Frankie Laine was one of those Academy Award nominations. Running a trade ad to find a Laine sound-alike to perform the song he was astonished to see the great man himself turn up to deliver this delicious parody of of every wild west theme he had previously performed mixing elements of Rawhide, Mule Train and Gunfight At The OK Corral. In collaboration with John Morris, Brooks skilfully also created a magnificent score that refined every possible musical cliche connected to westerns from swirling strings to choral refrains. Originally only released in part in the 1970s this 40th anniversary edition is the most complete version yet with 28 tracks that also incorporates some of the most hilarious dialogue from the film. This is a soundtrack created with love that captures perfectly the essence of a truly great film, now a rarity in the modern cinema era.

So the camels rode off into the sunset with my voice in their hooves and a green lampshade on their backs.” On the A side is The Delian Mode, which was used as incidental music during The Sky At Night in 1969, finding critical acclaim in Gramophone Magazine’s review of the album BBC Radiophonic Music, often known as The Pink Album, in September of the same year.
