A perfect example of the early to mid 90's jazz-chord driven, bass-heavy and ingenious, sample-rooted funk, "Love Me Or Leave Me" sounds like the lost Mood II Swing D.A.T. that never was, a combination of Smack Productions style North Jersey pride with the added razor's edge of downtown Manhattan's (now extinct) grit and thrill, delivered with the smooth swing of that era's titanium-strong formula. The original full-vocal epitomizes the song-rooted, radio-house aesthetic of the time, but head straight to the "Club Dub" for what's had underground heads and deep house obscurists thirsting for over 15 years. Licensed from Music Station and mastered straight from the original D.A.T.'s, CORE presents the full reissue of this genre-defining moment of the formative years.

One of the most evasive titles of the Prescription/Balance catalog, Chez Damier & Stacey Pullen's "Forever Monna" evinces the futurism of the most forward leaning deep house music, purging itself of any relics of disco sentimentality in the sacred quest of that prophecy of infinite, intangible beauty hidden within the patchwork of electronic production.Originally released in apparently minuscule numbers on Serious Grooves in 1993, this remarkable instrumental track was re-released two years later on Ballance, a fine example of these two Detroit pioneers' tireless effort to claim a piece of that brave new world from the unyielding clutches of Techno. Slinky synth loops. eerie chord frames and a brilliantly simple low-end punctuation coalesce in the uncertain, unidentifiable prospect of soul music stripped of any links to the past or present, an inexplicably funky rendition of a deep house slow mounting contagion, infecting fatally the recollections of Parliament/Funkadelic bass-licks and warm organ progressions with a bleak, somehow comforting landscape of fresh alien-esque soul. Previously unattainable without an eighty-dollar plus price-tag, "Forever Monna" joins the growing army of CORE reissues seeking to popularize an often horded and unattainable circle of essential dance music classics, pieces of stunning vision and incomparable genius that should be accessible to more than just a few pockets capable of shelving out the capital for what is rightfully the universal property of electronic musical sublimity.

It doesn't get more classic than this! Mood II Swing are giants of NY metro area club culture. On calibre with heavy-hitters like Masters At Work and Blaze, Lem Springsteen and John Ciafone's output boasts the bejeweled crown of deep house supremacy, spanning from the early 1990's to the latter part of the decade, molding and modeling a sound painstakingly tailored to the vanguard of minority and transgendered club scenes, pre-purge New York. One of their first and most explosive claims to the throne was 1992's "Wall of Sound" EP, a no-prisoners-taken masterpiece with the confidence and cockiness of two producers just out the gate and fully assured of their total domination of the craft. "I Need Your Luv" is, to this day, the indisputable measuring stick of cunty club tracks, opening as the curtain lifts with the outpouring of one fierce ruling diva, quickly picking up force in a storm of wide swinging-drum programs, punching bass drives and sparse, splitting synth stabs, all punctuated with unyielding vocal cut-ups and yearning cries. On the flip, "Penetration" delivers the same expert method, albeit with a more abstract, dreamy air about it, a bumping, endlessly ascending standard of the vocal-sample driven deep house track of the early 1990's, constantly building and morphing in its deceptive complexity. Brilliant, timeless and time-defying, "I Need Your Luv" & "Penetration" have finally been reissued for the first time since their original debut 21 years ago, the latest feature in Slow to Speak's ongoing CORE series, a testament to the formative years of NY house lore.

Grapeface is a born and bred Brooklyn producer/security guard/reseller of not-so-rare-at-all VHS tapes, who currently resides in the Marcy Projects. When he isn’t driving Randy Delgado crazy, you can find him sketching out some of the most hauntingly beautiful shit we’ve heard in a long time. Fanatical about ’70s classic rock and crappy horror movies, Grapeface is a few apples short of a bushel, for sure. This bizarre brew of influences and surroundings has allowed for Lucky 13 to fall limbs beyond the slew of recent LPs rooted in instrumental hip-hop.

"Slow to speak" are at it again with a second installment of unlikely and obscure a capella DJ mixing tools. Carefully preserved in phonograph format (and preserving the phonograph format), this assortment of quotations, media clips, poems, interviews and monologues are more than ambient fodder. They are secret messages for the dancefloor. A mechanism for dialogue between DJ and dancer. Mix 'em in... "and then they will hate you, and their hatred will be perfect." To paraphrase the ramblings of a madman, "It is not the job of DJ's to give the dancers what the dancers want. If the dancers knew what they needed, then they would not be the dancers. They would be the DJ's."
