Vilde&Inga - Silfr
Vilde&Inga
Silfr
LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Sofa)
19,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance, Klassik
Sofa has been following Vilde&Inga since they started playing together back in 2010 and when they contacted us with the music from Silfr, there was no doubt in our minds. On Silfr they continue to develop the remarkable interplay from their first album, Makrofauna (ECM), but this time they turn the level up a couple of notches. On Silfr Vilde&Inga presents chamber music of international caliber. Each piece on the album dives into a microclimate which eventually reveals small musical pearls. The sound of the two is even more rich than ever and its impressive how the interplay is a perfect tool to enhance their characteristic, organic aesthetics. Sofa is very proud to invite Vilde&Inga to join the catalog with this wonderful album.

Jim Denley has been playing flute since 1969 - after 50 years of a curious love/hate relationship with the instrument this is his first solo flute-only recording. He aims to situate this music within a global outlook, with a pacific perspective. Being from a continent, Australia, where there is no flute tradition, he's taken cues and elements from flute traditions that still have power and currency - the European flute with it's purity, brilliance and dexterity, the earthy simplicity of bamboos from Papua New Guinea, the shamanism of Amazonian ritual instruments, the far east refinement of Shakuhachi and Nohkan (he studied with Yamaguchi Goro in the 1980s), the dynamism of the Gaita, the timbral thickness of Kaval and Neh, to name just a few. But above all the flute traditions of the Solomon Islands have been a great inspiration. The second track on this release, For Celina Rokona honours a great flute player from Ataa, in North East Malaita. She played the Sukute, a curious combination of flute and percussion, and this inspired the second piece on this release.Having said that, he's an experimentalist, not much interested in reproducing known systems - this isn't another world music potpourri. He maintains a focus on the sheer magic of sonic materiality. When a jet stream crashes against an edge, the air column vibrates - sound magically springs into existence. On guitars we see the vibrating string, on drums the skin, or with speakers the cardboard cone wobbles - but here whatever the frequency or dynamic we see nothing. This shamanistic 'coming into the world' has produced diverse flute traditions for millennia and perhaps this invisible genesis is why, in many cultures, the instrument is associated with the supernatural.

Lasse Marhaug, electronics. Kim Myhr, electronics, electric guitar.SOFA is proud to release "On The Silver Globe" the debut album of the duo of Kim Myhr and Lasse Marhaug. The album originated as a commission from the MetaMorf art biennale in Trondheim for the two musicians to collaborate on a 8-channel piece for the 2016 edition. The morphing of Myhr and Marhaug proved to be a good match, the two had known each other for years but never worked together, and in the process of making "On The Silver Globe" found this collaboration should be more than a one-off. After the performance of the 8-channel version the two went back into the studio to make a stereo-version of the piece, which is now being released as a CD and LP."On The Silver Globe" borrows its title from the 1988 film by polish director Andrzej Zulawski, a science-fiction story set on a distant planet but also something that could be read as a political allegory of the struggle against totalitarianism. The film was stopped mid-production by the state and not released until ten years later, with unfinished scenes replaced by unrelated footage of a realist nature. Another influence for the piece was Andrew Smith's "Moon Dust" book, which deals with how different the individual astronauts of the Apollo programme dealt with the extraordinary experience of going to the moon, and how the space program was ultimately shut down by the Nixon administration. Both Myhr and Marhaug are apt improvisers and musicians, but "On The Silver Globe" is a pure studio creation. The piece is divided in five sections, and the instrumentation is of a wide range, including guitar, vintage analogue and modular synthesizers, oscillators, granular synthesis, digital prossessing, acoustic objects and a wide range of studio trickery. The result is a powerful tapestry of sound sheets that is constantly morphing into new shapes, but also with sudden shifts in character, slowly making its way towards the inevitable conclusion, in which all cosmic matter is sucked into a black hole.

Robin Hayward, Microtonal F-tuba. Peder Simonsen, Microtonal C-tuba. Martin Taxt, microtonal C-tuba.Bite of the Orange is Microtub's third album on SOFA. On 'Bite of the Orange' the three tuba players dig deeper into the sphere of just intonation. Robin Hayward has composed two new pieces for the group focusing on the 11th and 13th harmonics, resulting in a strong microtonal character. The canadian music critic Stuart Broomer picked Microtub as one of the highlights of the FIMAV festival inVictoriaville last year, and wrote(...)Together they explored compositions that created tremendous temporal space using long tones, then found in their rare instruments very specific, previously unheard pitch intervals, distances that took close listening into new territory(...)Bite of the Orange was recorded during Microtub's one week residency at the Palazzo Stabile Art Center in Piemonte, Italy in January 2016. Mixed by Peder Simonsen and mastered by Mike Grinser at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.

The Pitch is a Berlin-based quartet that explores the area between abstract melody and acoustic drone. Since 2009 they have been developing a musical language and a body of work ranging from quartet music to extended, large-scale ensemble pieces involving guest musicians and further conceptual elements. Improvisation is an important element in their music and it is used as a generative device within specific shapes, structures, and ideas for different pieces of music. Their piece Frozen Orchestra focuses on slowly changing textures, pitch-set constellations, and the subtle blending of instruments. Frozen Orchestra (Amsterdam) was recorded live at the Sonic Acts Festival and features six additional musicians in addition to the four core members. Boris Baltschun, electric pump organ. Koen Nutters, bass. Morten J. Olsen, vibraphone. Michael Thieke, clarinet. Featuring Lucio Capece, bass clarinet. Johnny Chang, violin. Robin Hayward, tuba. Chris Heenan, contrabass clarinet. Okkyung Lee, cello. Valerio Tricoli, Revox. Recorded Live at Sonic Acts, Paradiso, Amsterdam, February 26th, 2012. Mixed by Morten J Olsen at The Tower. Mastered by Mike Grinser at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.
