Milan, 1979, only two years had passed since the explosion of punk but it seemed like ten years had passed, 1977 had inexorably changed the destiny of a generation of musicians. Milan in those years felt a bit like Manchester, a city in black and white, with monuments grayed by smog, busy and still far from becoming the “Milan to drink” of the mid-80s. The music scene was totally disconnected from the rest of the Italian underground, the bands were born and imploded within a few months. The inputs that arrived thanks to the English weekly New Musical Express and some Italian fanzines were essential to know what happened across the channel almost in real time. The concerts at the 2001 Odyssey, a club where almost all the really important post-punk bands performed, were fundamental to understand and feel part of something that resembled a revolution, a movement that in those years produced little in terms of discography but that today, after almost forty years, we reveal the absolute uniqueness of the proposals of the protagonists of that Milanese season. Sharp guitars, primordial drum machines, synthesizers bought at a high price and 4 tracks cassette recorders were the tools used to affirm their belonging to a creative movement that developed simultaneously throughout Europe.

One of the most treasured French minimal wave records is back on vinyl (and first time on CD!)
Comix, a duo of guitarist/composer André Demay and DJ/singer Natan Hercberg, are a one album project. Their first single “Touche Pas Mon Sexe”, recorded in 1979, has been refused by several record companies, but duo finally found home on French branch of Virgin. They released two singles and one full length LP in 1981, and appeared on “BIPPP: French Synth-Wave 1979/85” compilation a few decades later. The music was composed by André with a legendary Roland TR-808 (Marvin Gaye, Kraftwerk and Afrika Bambaataa used the same drum machine for their hits at the same time). Natan wrote the lyrics, filling comic speech bubbles. Their production was somewhat different to mainstream “nouvelle vague” artists: much more positive and ironic than their chart mates. However, Comix didn’t have much success with their songs in 80s, but was rediscovered in 21st century with the strong interest in original minimal wave/coldwave artists. Here they are again, young and bold, as nearly 40 years ago.

What exactly happened in the Italian underground / post punk scene 30 years ago, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps tracking down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more “national” approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban / suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here’s the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation.

Stefano Ghittoni (former Peter Sellers & the Hollywood Party singer and electronic producer behind The Dining Rooms) and Bruno Dorella (OVO's deus ex-machina, Ronin and Bachi Da Pietra lead figure) recorded the debut of TIRESIA during 2018, following the rare tape 'Inside / Outside' released in 2017. Originally the compositions were designed for a double album, in which the length of the songs and the catatonic mood should have followed those of the box released for Bronson Recordings. An extensive pre-production has instead led to a move on a more "ecstatic" spirit, drying the songs literally ("less is more"!) Ghittoni's touch remains recognizable, with his work on samples, loops and synth lines. Dorella's guitar moves sinuously inside these plots, alternating actual themes with purely timbric sounds. The two also manage to be more cinematic, transcending the ambient sound of the very beginning and leaning to the more astral territories of Sun Ra and the shoegazing grandeur of My Bloody Valentine.

Originally released 23 years ago on CD , "Troppo lontano e altre storie" is finally reissued on LP for the first time. 13 remastered tracks produced between 1986 and 1994 by the Italian seminal Hardcore Punk band. Here you can find in detail, the complete versions of three tracks recorded live in Lubeck (D) during the 1986 European tour and previously issued on 7". Four songs from a series of acoustic sessions recorded in 1988 and previously issued on singles and compilations. Four songs produced with Stefano Giaccone and Lalli from "La diserzione degli animali del circo", the 1989 Kina / Howth Castle 12". A song from the Kina / Act 1990, split single, and finally the 1994 recordings featuring Marco Brunet on guitar and vocals. In the original 1996 liner notes, Kina wrote: All these recordings have been published on records that will never be reissued again. Hopefully you will be pleased to find them all together in this collection. Now, if we compare the first and last piece, we'll find a big difference in terms of sound and playing quality. It's still us though, luckily we grew up and we've changed too, and we're so proud and happy of our past and present. Always yours Sergio, Alberto, Gianpiero, Marco, Stefano and Lalli.

One year after the release of Kina's first album, Irreale Realtà, which was a good proof of the Italian Hardcore scene vitality and a confirmation that Kina was definitely one of the most original and creative bands on the European scene.Even though, 1986 was a transition year. Punk began to loose its energy and while many of the bands from the first wave were gone, Kina decided to work on their second album, and for this they chose a studio owned by a former Hippy' in Aosta. They entered the studio with very clear ideas. Velocity? yes! just a little bit less than before, Melody? yes, and in this case a little more than before! Solos? Sure! and wild too, Short songs? Of course, even if now they feel like trying something different as well. After one month of studio work, they finally got a concise and intense album. Some kind of raw and rusty thing coming from big and extremely loud amps. The new path seems to allow the band to explore new sound territories where a new kind of melodic lines mix up with past experiences and new genres, Metal included. It's a sad and dark sounding album including songs which would become classics in the band's repertoire. And what about the artwork? The front cover album has a very, very strong image! An airbrush retouched picture - by Salvatore Cosentino - of an angry homeless who almost seems coming out of the cover.

Naphta was born in 1978 but differently from the most of other bands from Bologna at that time, they came up with a very peculiar Jazz-Rock formula mixed up with elements from the almost "out of time" Progressive genre. The result was unsettling! Their music was mostly improvised with no apparent distinctions between rhythm section and soloists, in fact everybody in the group could have taken a solo at any time but in close relation with the others. All members in the group were classically trained musicians who were in full control of their actions, all except the singer Marco “Cigaro” Cigarini whose vocal work and his nonsense lyrics were the most far out aspect and possibly the most fascinating element in the mix. Such music was probably too demanding for the general audience's attitude of the time and the band disappeared not so long after the release of their excellent tape. If compared to the original cassette, the present LP reissue includes two extra tracks, “La femme Fatale” and “Tac”, a couple of unearthed pieces which complete the picture of one of the most unconventional creatures in the history of Italian underground music.

This is the definitive reissue of the long out of print first album from Italian experimental-rock band La 1919. Originally released in 1987 by ADN, the Italian Recommended Records branch, Ars srA was an early example of a long distance collaboration album as result of a virtuosic exchange of tapes between the Milan based duo and the legendary American guitarist Henry Kaiser and Canadian maverick sound artist John Oswald. The resulting music sounds like a perfect blend of '70s Art-Rock elements and '80s electronics. An eclectic mix of "Frith" oriented guitars, cold synthetic sounds and programmed drum machine beats. Some sort of sonic no-man's land where elements from the Post-Rock in Opposition aesthetic meet the experimental side of New Wave. The album includes a declared tribute to the Frith-Laswell-Maher seminal coalition, via a metronomic version of "Killing Time", the title track from Massacre's first album. The LP comes with updated graphics and contents including unpublished pictures and various memorabilia + CD with extra tracks. In few words: Highly recommended!

Magazzini Criminali can be considered one of the most important experiences in Italian Post-Avant-garde theatre of the '70s and the '80s. Back in 1980 the group gave birth to one their widely acclaimed and most representative works. Crollo Nervoso was a real Post Modern Opera, a complex and multi layered work based on the transfer between different Art languages and aesthetics. A deep mixture of Avant Rock, Burroughs's Cut Up, science fiction, body art, glamour and a hint of porno. On stage actors move obsessively and creating some highly repetitive sequences that show a clear "Rock" approach. Musically we are in front of a great hybrid where electronics, tribal funk, ambient and Blues interact with actors excited voices and "stolen" fragments from the musical works of Eno, Fripp, Jon Hassell, Miles Davis and others. More than a Pre-Plunderphonics kind of work, Crollo Nervoso is a definitive re-invention of the soundtrack concept in relation with text and drama. Originally released in 1980 (on black or white vinyl) by Italian Records, Crollo Nervoso stands as a unique sound-art object that finally sees the light again in all its multi-sensory eclecticism.

From the heart of the late '70s / early '80s British underground scene, an extraordinary album at the very edge between art-rock, and punk. The Work were a full electric band featuring Tim Hodkinson, his very first project after the seminal experience of Henry Cow, and three younger maverick figures from the London underground scene. Guitarist Bill Gilonis (The Lowest Note, News from Babel, The Hat Shoes), bassist Mick Hobbs (Officer, Half Japanese), and Drummer Rick Wilson (Family Fodder). The Work embodies the crucial step between two unrepeatable decades in music. An unprecedented mixture of rock complexity and punk attitude. Unapologetically raw and direct, Slow Crimes, The Work's first album originally released in 1982, stands as one of the most essential and uncompromising pieces of vinyl in the field of experimental rock. This is a special edition LP + CD + printed inner sleeve with unpublished pictures and various memorabilia. The CD contains the album + 3 extra tracks from The Work's first and only 7" including the anthemic "I hate America". Includes printed inner sleeve.

Collected here in a deluxe boxed-set for Record Store Day 2018 is four of the finest Spittle compilations of 1980s Italian post-punk, art-rock, and synth-wave. Milano New Wave: 1980-83 Redux, Samples Only, iV3SCR (The Great Complotto 2), and Body Section feature some of the heavy hitters of the era including Die Form, Frigidaire Tango, Rinf, and more as well as more obscure artists who may have only appeared ever on these comps.
Milano New Wave: 1980-83 Redux: Twelve tracks that recount the salient steps of the brief but intense career of four Milanese bands from the post-punk of Other Side, to the oblique funk of State Of Art, to the Kraftwerk influences of La Maison, to the electro pop-wave of Jeunesse d'Ivoire. "Boris Karloff" features Kubrix and 2+2=5 playing with La Maison, forming the group known as Entourage L'Asino. These four bands illustrate the mood of an underground scene that burned out rapidly, mostly due to the indifference of the media and recording industry during those years.

Windopen were a proudly underground band from Bologna. Active between the 70's and the 80's, they only recorded a cassette on Harpo's Music and a single for Cramps Records. At the exact edge between masterpiece and madness, here is the first ever vinyl reissue of their original cassette, released on 1979 plus two unreleased tracks and tracks from their single of 1980. A classic item from the golden era of Italian New Wave. A perfect mixture between deep Punk-R'n'R spirit, urban slang lyrics and pure nonsense. "Sei in banana dura" was a really big underground hit!

Long awaited re-issue for one of the most influential and controversial post-punk combos of the 'Granducato era'.
After more than three decades I Refuse It! are still quite a great thing. Rock’n’roll’s later reaching of higher peaks of brutality finally made acceptable what once was considered noise and chaos and now make them appear just a bit less subversive, but their impact is still strongly felt. So, collecting and publishing their complete output in one album is definitely an historical act. Differently from Cronache del videotopo, the CD published in 2005 by the glorious Wide Records, the present double LP includes also their great version of Atto di forza numero 10 from I Ragazzi del Sole, a real gem from the Sixties Italian beat repertoire. Even if the Internet seems to have saved from oblivion any obscure document of the international hardcore punk saga, all these songs together in vinyl represent the best celebration for a band who, back in the day, really tried to stay away from the safe track of the business when it was very complicated if not self-destructive to do so.
They were certainly a bit too far out for a large part of the aficionados of “classic punk” but deserved attention, at least for those who began to be tired of the old stereotypes. It’s no coincidence that reviewing the Permanent Scar/Sfregio permanente casette in the magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio I described their style as “experimental hardcore” and “a sort of Meat Puppets oriented sound”.
Finally, between 1982 and 1983, Italian punk got its spot on the international map. In fact, even if there were already some Italian punk bands, it was not before the emergence of the hardcore movement that we could really start talking about a real Italian scene. Needless to add that this was not just a simple musical issue, back in the day, for many of us, hardcore punk was mainly an attitude and a way of life.
In Tuscany, the whole scene became known under the acronym of GDCH (Granducato Hardcore) and I Refuse It! (together with CCM, Wardogs, Putrid Fever, Traumatic, Juggernaut and others) became one of its most significant bands.
Because of their varied and multiple inspirations and tendency to experiment, it's hard to consider I Refuse It! as simply a hardcore band. This 2LP collection compiles their complete recorded output for the first time and is an essential piece of Italian punk history.

Tribal Noise were formed in Bologna in 1983, the first nucleus was composed by Cesare Ferioli on drums, Federico Poggipollini on bass, Andrea D'Alessandro on guitar, Giuseppe Yu Guerra on keyboards and Giampiero Babbini on vocals. At the end of 1983, the line up slightly changed with the entry of Fabrizio "Felix" Frassineti in place of Andrea D'Alessandro. The group was noted for the lyrics in Italian, their goth and post-punk approach and a series of compositions akin to the mastery of Joy Division, The Cure, or Siouxsie & The Banshees. This anthology collects all of their works, the Ep C.A.S. records and a series of tracks that appeared on tape compilation and fanzines. Such a great discovery of the earliest Italian underground of the mid-eighties.

Inascoltable is the first album from Bolognese group Skiantos, the band that added a completely different flavor to the rock underground with their delirious performances and over the top lyrics. Released through Oderso Rubini's Harpo's Bazaar label (later Italian Records) in 1977 on cassette format, the album was recorded in one night in November 1977 in a session that was almost improvised, and was later printed on LP in 1979. This reissue from the original master does full justice to the insanely creative playing of the band fronted by Freak Antoni, who were true forerunners of demented rock and virtuous artists capable of colorfully interpreting all the non-standard rock movements from the British and American underground. This record wouldn't be out of place in the Zappa discography, although the whole turned out a little bit more punk...

In the summer of 1986, Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound) went to Florence, Italy for a different kind of vacation: to make a record with noise-funk band Rinf. The sweaty sessions stretched for weeks, resuming in London, to whip these loose tracks into shape. Lacerba released the final mixes on two 12" EPs that have been out of print for thirty years. For the first time, this album compiles the fully remastered complete sessions in a new package that cheekily references the testosterone-driven porn-obsessed lyrics, a beautiful three-color silkscreen + custom die-cut jacket. Following the breakup of Cambridge's avant-rock legends, Henry Cow, guitarist Fred Frith moved to NYC in 1979, and soon found himself deep in the heart of the city's robust post-punk and free-jazz scenes, performing with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher, from the group Material, as a power trio of sorts under the moniker of Massacre. The group quickly garnered a reputation around town, and around the world for that matter, as a heavy and heady band that experimented greatly with rhythm, time signatures, and tone. As Frith himself put it, "the group was a direct response to New York. It was a very aggressive group, kind of my reaction to the whole New York rock club scene."

Massacre released one album, Killing Time, before disbanding for nearly 20 years. Their first wave as a group crashed fast and furiously and this one album, recorded in part live in Paris, and in part at Brooklyn's OAO Studio, is a perfect encapsulation of early 80s NYC. In addition to the original album, first released on Celluloid in 1981, this deluxe 3 sided 2LP includes 8 bonus tracks recorded live between 80 and 81 and The Stone in San Francisco, and Inroads and CBGB's in NYC. Avant-jazz-post-punk-noise of the highest order from several legends and one of the most important projects Frith and Laswell were ever involved in, reissued by Spittle.

La Maison story is essentially an oral one, like for many bands in those years. Casual encounters, records found and exchanged, demos recorded at home, live club shows in a country that in those years was changing socially and culturally at the speed of light, and was molding itself at the rate of a fluid modernity. The tracks of this album, all recorded between 1980 and 1984, tell the story of a world where synthesizers and drum machines coexist and replace traditional rock instruments. Where homemade overdubs broaden the spectrum of sonic possibilities and the "cut and paste" of tapes is done, literally, by hand. A world in which the first infatuations for wave and industrial are contaminated with no prejudice by the rhythms and sounds of funk and disco. A milestone for those who want to understand the vibrant landscape of Italian music of the eighties, many times too hectic and elusive to be captured in real time. Twenty one tracks on CD and twelve on vinyl, most of them never published before, see the light of day more than thirty years after their creation.

Finally reissued on vinyl by Spittle, the seminal compilation of the post-punk undercurrents of northern Italy. Great Complotto is been an amazing story, one you would like to live yourself, even more than 30 years later. A typical story of suburban Italy, based in Pordenone, when creativity was on top and the shortage of technical resources didn’t keep the dream from coming true. That was the driving force of the often underestimated Italian punk scene.
