Jorge Ben is one of Brazilian music’s iconic and best-loved figures. Born Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes in Rio in 1942, he took the stage name, Jorge Ben, in deference to his mother’s Ethiopian roots, and later used Jorge Ben Jorge for further distinction. Playing tambourine and singing in a church choir from an early age, Ben began playing in Carnival blocos and was performing in nightclubs as a teen. Signed to Philips in 1963, his “Mas Que Nada” became an instant international sensation that has never waned, despite being sung entirely in Portuguese. Beginning in samba, Ben’s open minded approach saw him embrace aspects of bossa nova, the “Jovem Guarda” rock movement of the mid-1960s and the experimental Tropicalia form, the broad palette and diverse influences yielding a number of adventurous and abstruse albums during the 1970s, of which Solta o Pavao is one of the most rated by connoisseurs, though somewhat overlooked in general; its title translates roughly to “Unleash the Peacock” and apparently concerns the outward expression of inner beauty. Against a backdrop of lushly produced samba rock with shades of MPB, highlights include opener “Zagueiro,” in which Ben salutes football centre-backs in typically playful and poetic language; closing number “Jesualda” is a heady ballad of a chance encounter leading to a girl’s social climbing and “Para Ouvir No Radio (Luciana)” a love song with striking flute and string arrangements; Dadi Flavi’s bubbling bass and occasional string synths help keep the sound non-standard.

The story of Japanese psychedelic band Apryl Fool and their eponymous debut album is simply extraordinary. It was the vehicle by which bassist Haroumi Hosono first came to prominence, years before he became known as the “Godfather of Japanese electronica” as the founding member and leader of Yellow Magic Orchestra, though this musical titan had work released prior to the group’s 1968 founding, such as the song “The Sea Of Summer Day,” recorded with Yuko Okuyama and released by King Records the year before. Drummer Takashi “Rei” Matsumoto was a Beatles maniac that had covered songs by Them and Sam & Dave in his earlier group, Burns, while pioneering prog-rock keyboardist Hiroyoshi Yanagida and guitarists Chu Kosaka and Eiji Kikuchi had all been part of a group called The Floral, formed in 1967 through the Japanese wing of the official fan club of The Monkees (whom they supported during a Japanese tour enacted in October 1968). In September 1969, Apryl Fool played behind musical theatre group Tokyo Kid Brothers, the recording issued in minute quantity as the Love & Banana EP, issued on Columbia Japan’s Musicolor subsidiary; Apryl Fool’s own LP, also issued on Musicolor that year, had extended spacey psychedelic freak jams in the form of “Tanger” and “Pledging My Time,” marathon blues-rock tracks such as “April Blues” and “Honky Tonk Jam,” with the employed English sounding fairly credible, though both parts of epic opus “The Last Mother Land” feature Japanese lyrics. Of course, the day that the LP was actually released is reportedly the day that Apryl Fool announced their termination, giving this scarce release another level of legend for connoisseurs.

Futuristic synthesizer specialist and sound designer Matsuo Ohno was responsible for the sound design of a broad range of film, television and radio soundtracks, most famously the animation series Astro Boy, which he began working on in 1963, together with his assistant, Takehisa Kosugi. Ohno was born in the heavily-populated Kanda district of central Tokyo in 1930 and was heavily affected by the repeated bombing raids on the city enacted in World War II, which took place during his formative years. After the War, deeply motivated by philosophy and Surrealism, he was largely unaffected by popular music, other than the
electronic abstractions of Karlheinz Stockhausen; the left-wing filmmaker Fumio Kamei was another early influence. Ohno began immersing himself in the realm of sound effects while working with the Bungaku-za modernist theatre troupe and he performed a similar function at NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting corporation, but became so frustrated by the rigidity of the restrictions imposed on him there that he quit his prestigious post at the broadcaster, although his skills were such that he remained in high demand as a freelancer, which allowed
him to refine his sound effects techniques with evolving analogue synthesizers. The five suites of tracks that make up the album Roots Of Electronic Sound album were recorded between 1963 and 1966; initially released on the ALM label in 1975, it is comprised of brief
tape experiments, the cover artwork fittingly representing Astro Boy, from which many of the audio interludes are taken.

Obscure 1976 proto-electronics masterpiece 'Viaje' is a purely brain frying avant garde flipout from the electroacoustic musicians Eduardo Polonio and Horacio Vaggione (probably most known for his album on Cramps). Together, they deploy synths, electric guitars, organs and bass and squash them all up together in sundry sense befouling ways. On the A side, they're tangled into an overpowering threshing machine of spitting electronic mayhem, while the B side moves the proceedings into overtly acidy territory, everything ratcheting down and expanding outward into a delirious psychedelic electronic whirlpool. Beautiful gatefold vinyl reproducing the original artwork.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock was originally a manga comic series created and illustrated by Leiji Matsumoto, which debuted in 1977. The comic was adapted into an anime television series in 1978 directed by Rintaro and produced by Toei Animation. The soundtrack to this series was composed by Seiji Yokoyama and is perhaps his best known work. Symphonic and tense, the music perfectly compliments the show, where Captain Harlock denies defeat and leads an outlaw crew aboard his starship Arcadia to undertake daring raids against Earth's oppressors during a low time for Earth's population, in the future of 2977 AD. A great and rare anime soundtrack, highly sought after by collectors both of anime and Japanese electronics/symphonic music.

Delaware-based power trio Mouzakis conjured an intriguing sound
somewhere between traditional rhythm and blues and garage rock, with
psychedelic and hard rock leanings. The band occupied something of a
unique space during their short reign during the early 1970s, and it was
partly their non-standard outlook that kept the group a trio, since
other potential musical recruits simply could not find a way through
their multidirectional sound. Drummer/lead singer Eddie Stevenson and
bassist/keyboardist Fred Dawson had been playing together in the
mid-1960s in The Fabulous Pharaohs, which issued sparse singles on
short-lived labels such as Three Star and Reprise, issuing a mix of
originals and non-standard cover tunes, before splitting off to form
Mouzakis, with a number of guitarists failing to last long, before Sam
Stipo stepped up to the plate. Soon Mouzakis were carving out a solid
reputation as an enthralling live act on the Delaware and Maryland live
circuits, opening for all manner of acts, including soul group The
Stylistics and smooth pop/rock act, Chicago. Following the release of
debut single “Don’t Want You No More” for Philadelphia’s British Main
Records in May 1970, debut album /Magic Tube /was issued by British Main
the following year. The album certainly veers all over the map: “Party
Ball” is straightforward rock ‘n’ roll, while “Lady” and romance bust-up
saga “Both Do Fine” skate the fine line between garage rock and
psychedelia. In contrast, lengthy opener “Magic Tube” reminds of a
less-polished Doors and the live cut of “Rock Around The Clock” has the
benefit of unexpected organ. Definitely a one-away release by a
difficult to classify band.

Count Five shot out of San Jose, CA in 1966 with the #5 hit single "Psychotic Reaction" which has gone on to hold pure legendary status as one of the greatest garage rock singles of the golden era; a snotty, loud, out of control cut that shattered glass and pierced eardrums from coast to coast. Though the late, great, Lester Bangs once immortalized them in essay, imagining a world in which the group went on to release several more albums, the reality is that this one album, also titled Psychotic Reaction, is all this particular reality got (and maybe all that it could handle). The group members, still all in their teens when they hit, went off to college, a few more singles were released, but no further full lengths came to pass. Fortunately their one long player is more than just the titular hit, it's a ripping piece of garage-rock history and one of the more consistently enjoyable long-players of the era. A classic title sure to fill the dance floor and offend the squares even now, some 50+ years later.
